For those who have lived in Surrey for years, fi nding new things to do can sometimes be a challenge.

Longtime residents tend to look outside their city without realizing there are many cool spots right under their noses.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered – whether it’s for

your next coffee or dinner, walk in the park, or shopping trip.

Check out these treasures:1. Boothroyd House Wired

MonkTucked away behind trees

and a fence is the Boothroyd Heritage Home (16811 60 Ave.) built in 1873 and restored in 2007 to become part of Wired Monk Coffee Bistros.

Although Wired Monk is a

coffee chain, the patio, porch, living room with a fi replace and the foyer of the heritage home have the atmosphere of a one-of-a-kind coffee house.

While also serving hot and cold drinks, this location is licensed.

2. Art Knapp PlantlandMost people head to Art

Knapp Plantland (4391 King George Blvd.) to buy items for

their gardens and backyards or even to shop for home décor, but in the past few years, the location has also started selling women’s clothes and accessories.

With brands such as Vero Moda, Only and Mat Natt, this aspect of the store has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sections.

3. The GladesThe Glades (561 172 St.) is

located near the Canada-U.S. border near the Peace Arch border crossing.

‘New to you’ gems of SurreyCheck out theses unique restaurants, gardens and walkways

The Boothroyd House Wired Monk is not your average coff ee shop. The store is situated in a restored 1873 heritage house and is also licensed. BOAZ JOSEPH

The fi ve-acre garden was purchased in 1956 by Lydia and Murray Stephan in hopes of recreating the rhododendron gardens Murray remembered from his youth in Scotland.

After Murray passed away, the garden fell into decline until 1994, when Jim and Elfreide DeWolf began their restoration. In 2002, the DeWolfs donated The Glades to the City of Surrey.

Inside the garden are more than 1,600 mature rhododendrons (some of which are over six metres tall), azaleas and companion plants.

4. Old Surrey RestaurantNestled between Enterprise Rent-a-

Car and railway tracks is the Old Surrey Restaurant (13483 72 Ave.).

Founded in 1975 by Valentine Aguierre, a native of Spain, the restaurant is a white house with green gables located in the heart of Newton.

The house was built in 1918 when Lew Jack, a pioneer, built the home on the site of an old logging camp for his growing family.

Guests can now have dinner in the library and living room of the restored home, while looking at pictures of historic Surrey throughout their meal.

5. Pioneer Cycling and Pedestrian Overpass

Reaching across Highway 99 is the Pioneer Cycling and Pedestrian Overpass, a bridge that is illuminated at night.

The bridge connects the Pioneer Greenway on 148 Street and Winter Crescent to a neighbourhood park on the west side to 35 Avenue on the east side.

The bridge was fi nished in 2011 and is illuminated every night.

The City of Surrey website says the programming depends on the season and special occasions, but it’s usually illuminated in hues of blue and green.

In the past few years, the bridge has been the location for music videos for local artists.

The Pioneer Cycling and Pedestrian Overpass, reaching across Highway 99, casts a warm glow when illuminated at night. CITY OF SURREY

Part of living in the suburbs often means the opportunity to enjoy unique recreational activities, and Surrey is no exception.

With the city’s parks and beaches, residents should never fi nd themselves bored in their homes.

1. Fishing in Green TimbersGreen Timbers Lake

(14600-block of 100 Avenue) in Green Timbers Urban Forest is open for year-round fi shing for rainbow trout.

Every spring and summer, there is a Learn to Fish program offered through the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C., teaching people about fi sh habitat and conservation and how to catch fi sh.

Equipment is provided through the Surrey Nature

Centre as part of the free Fishing Rod Loan program. However, a fi shing licence is required if you are over the age of 16.

2. 1,001 Steps at Crescent Beach

Although 1,001 Steps is just a name (there’s actually less than 500 steps), many people climb up and down the steps enough times with personal trainers, friends or by themselves that the steps live up to their name.

The steps, now called Christopherson Steps, can be reached heading south along the beach or at the western-most part of 15A Avenue.

3. Nature Trail WalkJust off of King George

Boulevard is the Nature Trail Walk at Serpentine Wildlife Management Area (4600-block of King George Boulevard). It’s a triangle of land between

Highway 99, King George Boulevard and the Serpentine River.

The Nature Trail Walk is about 3.5 kilometres around with a few lookout points along the way. In the 150-hectare fen, there are many different types of habitats, as well as more than 130 different species of birds.

While walking along the dyke, keep your eyes open because harbour seals have been known to swim up the channel from Boundary Bay.

4. Barnston IslandFor avid and casual cyclists

alike, Barnston Island is perfect for a day of cycling.

After parking your car on the mainland (at the most eastern end of 104 Avenue) and taking a fi ve-minute ferry from Port Kells to the island, there is a mostly deserted road that runs close to 10 kms.

At the northwestern point of the island is Roberts Point which is a good area for picnics. However, the island has no public washrooms or any other amenities.

5. David Dreves KayakingOffering sea kayak, canoe

and stand-up paddle board programs, David Dreves Kayaking has been operating in the Crescent Beach area for more than a decade.

The company offers a sunset tour which starts at Elgin Heritage Park and goes to Blackie Spit, allowing for a perfect view of the sun setting over the water.

6. Beach VolleyballThe best place for beach

volleyball is at Crescent Beach at the end of Sullivan Street. The volleyball court is sought after from mid-spring to mid-fall.

Nearby is the beach when you get too warm and need to take a dip in the water, and Sullivan point, which has grassy areas great for a blanket and a picnic.

Recreation: Six top picksSurrey’s myriad beaches and parks leave no excuse to stay bored at home

The Nature Trail Walk at Serpentine Wildlife Management area is a 3.5-kilometre loop that features a few lookout points along the way. The fen is home to more than 130 diff erent species of birds. BOAZ JOSEPH

The patio at Northview Golf and Country Club is a favourite spot for Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation President and CEO Jane Adams.

“It has to be a smoking hot, hot summer day, with clear skies,” said Adams, “but I can’t think of a better place to relax and enjoy a meal, with the incredible views of the golf course and the North Shore Mountains and the Valley.”

With a daughter who plays competitive soccer, Adams also says the facilities and views around South Surrey Athletic Park are hard to beat while enjoying watching your children play sports.

And to find a unique and special gift for someone, she recommends the shop at the Surrey Art Gallery.

“I really love the little gift shop at the Surrey Arts Centre,” she said. “They have special one-of-a-kind items you can’t get anywhere else. They have unique

things that are often intimate and personal for a special occasion like a retirement.”

Northview Golf and Country Club is located at 6857 168 St. South Surrey Athletic Park is located at 14600 20 Ave. The Surrey Art Gallery is located at 13750 88 Ave.

For longtime Surrey glass blower Robert Gary Parkes and his wife Jeanette, it’s the natural sights of Surrey they most appreciate.

Take for example the beautiful row of sugar maples along 188 Street between 80 and 86 Avenues – the colour change in fall is spectacular, they say.

They rival the brilliant sunsets, which are often worth pulling over for, that can be seen from the same stretch of road, or the view coming down the small hill on 184 Street (near 75 Avenue) north of Clayton Elementary school.

“I don’t know how to explain it – something about the way the sun casts its low glow along the fields – it is simply a treat to be driving there around dusk,” Jeanette says.

Over the years, the creative couple has also enjoyed Port Kells Park (19340 88 Ave.), where they brought their kids to swim and now catch up with the locals.

And they “love, love, love” walking the trails in Tynehead Park (17200 96 Ave.)

For a night out, the Parkes head to their favourite restaurant, Zythos Greek Mediterranean Grill (96 Avenue and 198 Street) and enjoy the to-die-for greek salad dressing in Port Kells.

Robert Gary Parkes is an award-winning Surrey glass blower and his wife Jeanette manages their studio and gallery, which is located at 9060 184 St.

With 14 years under his belt as an RCMP offi cer, Cpl. Scotty Schumann has a host of local spots where he likes to decompress while off duty.

Schumann, the new media relations offi cer for the Surrey RCMP, spends a good deal of time on his motorcycle.

But he also likes to get out to local dog parks with his two dogs, Ryker, a three-year-old male border collie, and a seven-year-old Australian shepherd named Boo.

He has a few favourite spots, but really enjoys going to Dogwood Park on 20 Avenue near 135 Street, a park in Newton, and Boundary Bay.

He also enjoys spending time with his daughter at Unicorn Stables (5095 125A St.) in Surrey.

There, he watches her ride and helps with some of the horse grooming.

But Schumann really gets fi red up about one of Surrey’s hidden treasures – geocaching.

Geocaching is a global hunt that’s played using GPS-enabled smartphones. Participants navigate their way to a set of coordinates and then search for a “cache” – hidden containers fi lled

with trinkets.“I fi nd a few here and there,”

Schumann said. “I’m up to about 450 fi nds.”

Surrey is extremely rich in hidden treasure.

“Being the City of Parks, I’m going to tell you there’s thousands of geocaches

in this city. Every single park is littered with them. It’s amazing,” Schumann says.

In fact, there are more than two million active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide, including a group in the Surrey area.

Nadia Chan, the natural areas coordinator for the City of Surrey, says

geocachers must contact the city’s parks division prior to placing a geocache in a park.

This is to protect both the green space and the safety of participants.

Anyone who wants to know more about geocaching can visit https://www.geocaching.com/play

Growing up playing soccer in Surrey, Jessica Aderegg has practised and played on many different fi elds around the city.

However, one park that holds a special place in her heart is Newton Athletic Park (located at 128 Street and 74 Avenue). This is the place she trains with her team and on her own when she needs it.

Aderegg said there are plenty of

fi elds and spaces that are always fi lled with people of all ages staying active and having fun.

“Both of which I highly value. I am glad to have a place that I can always go to that is so close to home and that is always available to me,” she said.

Jessica Anderegg is a fourth-year defender and co-captain of the KPU Eagles women’s

soccer program.

Crescent Beach is a true treasure in Surrey, according to Nick Smith.

“Crescent Beach has been the backdrop for some of my best summer memories and is the perfect getaway,” he said. “With a beach that goes on for miles, it is a picturesque place to go for a walk or spend an entire day.”

Volleyball courts, barbecue areas,

and a fi shing pier are just some of the amenities at the popular beach.

“Come and explore Crescent Beach and it may even become your favourite place, too,” Smith said.

Crescemt Beach is located in South Surrey at the end of Crescent Road.

Nick Smith is a second-year power forward with the KPU

Eagles men’s basketball program.

1. Holy Smoke Coffee“If we’re smoking, we’re open,” is Al Nemeth’s

slogan for his coffee house – or tepee, really. If you’ve ever driven down King George

Boulevard near 34 Avenue, chances are you’ve seen the tepee on the side of the road.

Nemeth serves fresh-roasted organic coffee by the cup and also in old-fashioned mason jars that people can bring back to have refi lled.

2. Chopsticks on PhoSteven and Lynn Le opened Chopsticks

on Pho (15325 56 Ave.) in 2012 after years of wanting to run their own restaurant.

In the beginning, Lynn worked in the kitchen while Steven greeted the guests in the front, which gave the restaurant a warm ambience. Lynn makes a point of remembering the names of the regulars.

3. The Country CafeThe Country Café (3033 King George Blvd.)

is situated in the middle of a business park, but over the years the café has garnered plenty of

loyal customers.Rosie Mitchell, the cook, says the regulars

live right in the neighbourhood. They’re the restaurant’s next-door neighbours.

Mitchell was the third owner of the Country Café from 2002 to 2011, until she sold it to Kirsten Malon, but you can still be sure to fi nd Mitchell in the kitchen.

The Country Café or as it’s fondly called, “Rosie’s,” is busiest Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for it’s all-day breakfasts.

4. Whalley Printers Ltd.Family-owned by Marian and Pete Nichols

since 1983, Whalley Printers Ltd. is an active supporter in the community. Pete said to be a corporate citizen, you have to be a part of the community, which means investing time and money, and he is happy to do so.

Some customers who moved out of Surrey into other parts of Metro Vancouver continue to come back to Whalley Printers because of the service.

5. Be’wiched CafeOwned and operated by Hope Parrish and

Verna-Jean Lieberth, Be’wiched Cafe (15230 56 Ave.) is located in a business park just off of Highway 10.

The pair started the restaurant in 2010 because they wanted to give people who worked in offi ces and commercial buildings healthy choices.

You can be sure to be greeted with a smile every time you come in.

In Port Kells, at the very end of 104 Avenue, there is a little-known ferry that takes you from the mainland to a small island made up of 47,000 square kilometres of Agricultural Land Reserve and Katzie First Nation land.

The ferry, which is actually just a barge and a tugboat, is about a fi ve-minute ride across the Parsons Channel on the south side of the Fraser River.

The ferry runs Monday to Thursday from 6:15 a.m. to 11:55

p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 6:15 a.m. to 12:55 a.m. Both schedules run on demand, but the ferry can only take fi ve cars, or 52 passengers, at a time.

While Barnston Island is home to less than 150 people (the population has fl uctuated over the years), the ferry and its captain Rob Petrunia, who lived on the island for 23 years, are constantly busy taking people to and from the rural island.

“It’s kind of overwhelming for a ferry that’s not that big,” Petrunia said.

He adds that there are some days when he needs to take cars off of the ferry to make room for the large number of cyclists.

Barnston Island is ranked number 10 on Let’s Go Biking: Easy Rides near Metro Vancouver.

Angela Morgan and her husband Andrew heard about the popular cycling spot on the Internet. The Morgans grew up in Surrey, but now live in Langley.

“Oh my God, we lived in Surrey our whole lives and we’ve just never come, ” Angela said.

The bike ride is about 10 kms

around the island on a mainly deserted road. As you make your way around the island, you’ll pass a few houses along with some companies such as Barnston Island Herbs (originally Fresh Herbs by Daniel in 1979) and Painted River Farm (established in the early 1960s).

At the northwest end of the island is a small park, Roberts Point, which is good for lunches and picnics. From the north side of the island you can see Pitt Meadows.

Heather Warkentin and her family of avid cyclists found out about Barnston Island by word of mouth. She says it’s good in terms of safety

because there’s not much traffi c.

For other visitors to Barnston, it’s not the allure of cycling but the peacefulness of it all.

Paula Le lives two minutes away from the ferry on the

mainland, but she’s been coming to Barnston Island for the past four or fi ve years to go fi shing.

While Le fi nds the island calm, 52-year island resident James Milligan said there’s too many people visiting the island these days.

Milligan was born on the island, and his family has resided there since 1949. He said that cyclists started coming to Barnston Island about 30 years ago.

He said some weekends see up to 500 or 600 people travelling to the island. He adds that when it becomes that busy, residents usually don’t leave the island after noon until seven in the evening.

Although Milligan fi nds the island increasingly busy with cyclists, he said, “You’re away from all the hectic-ness of the city,” which is what he likes.

Barnston Island is a popular destination for cyclists. LAUREN COLLINS
