To say that something spectacular has happened in

the Canadian custom car world would be a large under-

statement. When Don and Elma Voth’s pseudo ‘65 Chev

Impala won the highly prestigious Ridler award at the

63rd annual Detroit Autorama held this past February, it

became only the 4th Canadian entry in the past 50 years

to receive such a great honor. As if this is not enough

to capture front page headlines, even more relevant is

the fact that Don and Elma are residents of Abbotsford,

BC. Making this story even more dynamic, it is the 2nd

consecutive Ridler award presented to the owner of a

BC car! At last years Detroit show it was JF Launier of

Desert Customs in Osoyoos, BC that reined supreme,

capturing the award with his ‘Rivision’ creation, a ‘64

Buick Riviera that he built and owns. To put this into per-

spective, having another BC owned car win this year is

comparable to having 2 residents of BC win the Nobel

prize back to back. Absolutely ground shaking news on

the Automotive world stage. For those not fa-

miliar with the Ridler award, it is presented to

a show car that is being debuted for the fi rst

time in public and is the best vehicle that em-

phasizes creativity, engineering and workman-

ship.

To understand how this all transpired lets go

back several years, when Don had a dream of

having a car built for his wife Elma. Drawing

upon his memories of dating and honeymoon-

ing in a ‘65 Impala Don decided it would be

the basis for his next car. Being no stranger to

owning some choice rides, he contacted a friend

who he relied on several times to fulfi ll his de-

sires of building 1st class machinery. Starting in

2005 Don has had a working relationship with

renowned car designer and builder Chip Foose, who is

credited for building Don’s ‘49 Chev pick-up, his ‘37 Ter-

raplane pick-up and the mid-engined o1 Hemisfear, all

of which are outstanding customs.

For those not familiar with Chip, his storied back-

ground can be traced to a custom body shop in South-

ern California during the ‘70s where he started working

for his dad Sam Foose, a noted builder in his own right.

Chip then started working for Boyd Coddington, one

of the premier custom creators. He then ventured out

on his own to become what many would

say is the leading custom car designer

and builder on the planet. For the past 8

seasons the hit TV series ‘Overhaulin’ has

followed Chip and his team’s exploits as

they work their magic on unsuspecting

subject’s vehicles, transforming them

from forlorn to fantastic.

Once Chip had agreed to take on Don’s

project. he started with locating a suit-

able donor car that would supply the 1965

Chev outer body. Upon it being delivered

to Chip’s shop in Southern California the

next step was to acquire another ‘donor’

car that would supply all the underpin-

nings. For this Chip took delivery of a

brand new 2008 Corvette from his local

Chevrolet dealership, drove it 2 blocks

to his shop, and then stripped the body

off. From that point on it would take 6 1/2

years to fulfi ll Don’s wishes. For some of

you it may not seem that diffi cult a task,

taking a clean Impala body and plunking

it on a new car undercarriage. Even for

some one as capable as Chip this was a

major undertaking as the conversion re-

quired the construction of many hand

built components and meticulous metal

work. Since the Corvette is an interme-

diate size car and the Impala is full size,

it required the Corvette’s frame to be

lengthened 7 5/8” and the Impala body

shortened, starting with 14” taken out

of the rear body shell. The roof was then

shortened 8” and chopped 1 1/2” with

the windshield laid back 2 1/2”. The ‘C’

pillar was also leaned back to complete

the lowered roof line. To match the front

wheel wells the rears were raised 2” then

moved forward 7”. Custom bumpers were

fabricated which are fi tted above hand

made roll pans front and rear.

For the interior Chip hired a claymaker

to create moulds extending and fi lling in

the gaps caused by using the Corvette in-

terior parts inside the Impala’s larger pas-

senger compartment after which the one

off custom contoured panels were outfi t-

ted with new leather skins. Now a 2 seat-

er, the rear is dominated by the stereo’s

speaker system as well as storage com-

partments. Under the hood is evidence of

more superb craftsmanship as the Cor-

vette engine, which now produces 630

HP thanks to a Magna Supercharger is

expertly fi nished. Wanting a warm earthy

tone to adorn her new car Elma Voth

chose this 2 tone custom colour com-

bination that Chip calls Impostor Pearl

light and dark. This is an environmentally

friendly water based coating supplied by

the Glasurit line of BASF paints.

Unlike many show cars, this car is

completely functional, capable of driving

down to the shopping mall or down to

Florida. Because it retains the Corvette’s

drivetrain, the car can be taken to any

Chevrolet dealership for quick diagnos-

ing if a problem were to arise .

Thanks to Chip’s creative genius he and

his crew were able to take Don’s initial

concept and seamlessly marry a classic

Impala with a modern Corvette to deliver

a stunningly elegant car for Don’s bride

Elma.

For anyone wishing to see this astound-

ing custom in person, they can consider

themselves fortunate. Thanks to Don’s

considerable effort to arrange, the Im-

postor will be making its Canadian debut

at the BC Classic and Custom Car Show

at the Tradex convention center in Ab-

botsford, April 17-19. This will be the fi rst

time that a Canadian car show will have

featured 2 Ridler award winners consecu-

tively. The Impostor’s creator Chip Foose

will also be on hand to speak about his

latest creation on Saturday only from

10am to 5pm. Make plans to attend this

rare opportunity to spend some time with

one of the greats in the world of cars.

When Mitch Peacock fi rst laid eyes on

the vehicle that would become his “mis-

tress,” it was anything but love at fi rst

sight.

Sitting in knee-high weeds, atop a

small hill in a rural Albertan auto wreck-

ing yard, the Divco was a white, squar-

ish relic of a bygone era.

Or, as Peacock describes the ancient

delivery truck: “It was a big, ugly, uphol-

stered toilet.”

Peaock, who operates Jus Cuz Cus-

toms in Edmonton, was looking for a

unique vehicle he could refurbish into

a company delivery van, but when his

contact showed him the decades-old

Divco, he says he couldn’t stop laugh-

ing.

Ten years, countless hours of work,

and hundreds of thousands of dollars

later, the machine has elicited reverential

responses from those who have seen it

at some of North America’s biggest car

shows, including the 2013 SEMA Show,

one of the largest custom car events in

the world and the Super Nationals in

New Mexico.

What was once “a wallfl ower” has

been turned into a star attraction

The Divco will be at Abbotsford at the

BC Classic & Custom Car Show at Tra-

dex, which runs from April 17 to 19.

Visitors will see a transformed truck.

The rust is long gone, eliminated and

replaced by a gleaming green paint. The

vehicle rides on 22-inch rims just inch-

es from the ground and is powered by

an overhauled drive train featuring an

E-Rod 6.2-litre LS Series GM crate motor

and four-speed automatic transmission.

Those overhauls required a beefi -

er frame, which was reinforced by a

heavy-duty suspension cross-member

from a pick-up.

The interior – which once had just

one seat – has been hand-fabricated by

Steve Deman from Kolor Kings, save for

vintage 1965 Thunderbird seats. Deman,

who is based in Los Angeles, worked

closely with Peacock on the design and

also did the paint job.

Getting the vehicle into SEMA wasn’t

easy, Peacock says, and the fi ve-mem-

ber build team had to cram two years of

work into eight months. The project had

them working nights, weekends, and

whenever else he could fi nd the time.

“That truck became my mistress,” he

says. “My wife looks at that and goes, ‘I

hate it,’ “

It also required a lot of problem solv-

ing.

“You can’t just go to your local suppli-

er and fi nd parts for a 60-year-old Divco,”

he says. Instead, many components had

to be manufactured on site.

But the payoff, he says, came when

he saw the response from those at the

SEMA Show. Those who had never seen

a Divco were surprised by the unique

vehicle. Peacock wasn’t sure though,

what kind of response the radical

redesign would receive from Divco

partisans.

He needn’t have worried though.

“The Divco purists… were like ‘Oh my

God, that’s insane.’ “

They meant that as a compliment.

At the Super Nationals, Peacock says

he had people shaking his hand, thank-

ing him for bringing such a “crazy” vehi-

cle to the show.

“It was all ages,” he says. “It’s sort of

like that bulldog: It’s so ugly it’s cute.

“It was really kind of neat to see the

reaction that people were giving us be-

cause it’s such an oddball, unique kind

of truck.”

This 1964 International

Loadstar CO-1700 was

fabricated by the local crew

at Hot Rods Restos out of

Abbotsford. It made it’s debut

at the 2014 SEMA show in

November. The amazing

story is it was built from the

ground up in only 45 days

after the truck was teleported

out of Wisconsin 9 days

earlier!!

For the common folk not

familiar with the Loadstar CO-

1700, it was produced in a cab-

over-engine confi guration.

HRR re-confi gured the set

up and mid-mounted an

LS3 engine in the custom

chassis and fabricated a

custom turbo kit, helping the

engine produce anywhere

from 800-1000 horsepower.

The transmission is a T56

transaxle from a Corvette, but

customized it to a ‘side drive‘

with expert persuasion from

the HRR crew.

The system is an offset

drive and allows for a more

forward placement of the

output shafts. This street legal

beast sits on air bags and

suspension arms are straight

off of a C6 Corvette. Anyone

who played and collected Hot

Wheels as a youth, will see

where the inspiration of this

creation was formed.

When I was 15, my father

pulled into our driveway with his

newly lettered work van. I was in

utter awe at what this guy had

just done with a paintbrush and

a few cans of paint. I’ll never for-

get it. The painter’s name is Cliff

Burgess, and that lettering job

pointed me in the direction I’m

still following today.

I’ve always been into art. I was

drawing on the walls by the time

I could steal my brother’s cray-

ons, and blaming him. But this

was that “moment.” So I pes-

tered my father to ask Cliff if I

could work for him. Cliff told my

father he didn’t really need any

help, but directed me to ask an-

other sign painter he knew. This

guy said yes. His name is Leif

Syvertsen, and his shop was the

starting point to this wild ride.

I worked under Leif for about

four years. He taught me a lot

about layout and design, and

stuff he may not have even

known he was teaching me.

After about a year or so

working for him, I asked if we

could paint my car – a 1981

Honda Civic, with about 300,000

miles on it.

He agreed, and helped me

prep the beast and paint it –

process blue. In my head, I’m

thinking, “Too much blue. I need

to add something to it so it’s

not so... blue.” I have access to

a sign shop with an unlimited

array of colourful vinyl to make

some graphics. What colours do

I pick? Lime green and hot pink.

Hey, it was still the ‘80. So

now I have a bright, blue car,

with hot pink geometric shapes

and lime green accents. Perfect!

What next? I opted to test drive

my new brushes on the hood,

by painting a cartoon kid with

his fi nger jammed up his nose.

I was the coolest.

Fast forward another year or

so, and another “moment” hap-

pened that has had a lasting re-

lationship with me – the name

“Nub.” I’ve made up so many dif-

ferent stories over the years, but

here’s the truth. I was watching

Saturday Night Live one night.

The skit “Buckwheat Sings”

with Eddie Murphy was on. He

was singing a bunch of different

songs, all of which were being

spelled out incorrectly on the

screen, exactly the way he was

singing them.

He busted out “looking for

love in all the wrong places,”

and I laughed my can off. Done

in petite eight-inch lettering,

“WOOKIN PA NUB” was now

emblazoned across my rear

window. People just started call-

ing me Nub. I thought maybe it

wasn’t such a bad idea to have

a name that was easily remem-

bered, especially if I opened my

own shop. So that’s what I did.

The original business name

was Nub Designs, though short-

ly after I decided to swap the
