A crossover fit for families

All set for your next adventure

The 2014 Dodge Journey is a much better car than its original version, introduced into the heat of the 2009 recession. The Journey, which has the lines of a tall wagon, offers some of the more engaging handling and roadholding in the segment. And its optional third-row seat is one of its greatest advantages, along with smart packaging and a high level of features.

There’s a lot for busy parents to like about the 2014 Journey. Dodge and Chrysler clearly applied some of its long-honed expertise with minivans to this interior, as people and cargo really fi t well and there are plenty of smaller spaces for personal items, toys, and accessories. Front seats are what we’d best describe as ‘American-sized’—think wider than some other seats. Back-seat accommodations are among the best you’ll fi nd in any vehicle this size, and the seats are contoured to fi t adults. The rear seat folds fully fl at, and under the rearward portion of the cargo fl oor

there’s a huge space vast enough for a couple of laptop bags.

A couple of years ago, Chrysler gave the Journey a completely new interior, with a more elegant instrument panel, better trim, and soft-touch materials. Under the hood, it got the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, along with a large number of improvements that reduced noise, made the ride smoother, and generally upped the quality level substantially. Today’s Journey is one of the better picks among crossovers, even if that remains largely unknown.

As the only four-wheel-drive convertible SUV on the market, the Jeep Wrangler has a singular presence on the road. But it doesn’t come from its mechanical defi nition--it comes from more than seven decades of military heritage that’s passed down to today’s version, even if it’s substantially nicer to drive.

Today’s Wranglers still have the same visual spirit and off-road ability--something the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet can’t claim (it’s technically an all-wheel-drive convertible crossover, in case you dared to compared them).

The lengths to which Jeep goes to preserve its authenticity are pretty astounding, in an age where profi t and simplicity go hand in hand. The Wrangler still has a top that can be completely removed, and a windshield that can be fl ipped down. It still has the iconic look of its ancestors--fl at sheetmetal, exposed hinges, and a visual toughness that hasn’t been softened too much to appeal to a mass market.

Two-door Jeep Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited variants are offered, and both are far more comfortable than in the past. Either offers a choice of soft

or hard tops, and either top can rightly be called one of the Jeep’s best features. They can completely open the cabin of both the two- and four-door models, turning a hardtop Jeep into a convertible SUV. When you don’t mind a little turbulence and wind in your hair, with the top removed (and even in some low-speed cases, the windshield folded down) the Wrangler can hit the spot, bringing the sensations of a convertible into a very capable off-roader. The V-6 and automatic combination can now dash to 60 mph in a much faster 8.4 seconds for the Wrangler Unlimited, or 7.7 seconds for the two-door Wrangler. There’s surprisingly strong passing pep, and revs are kept low.

The sacrifi ces might well be worth it when you take to the trail—pretty much any trail—and experience the Wrangler’s reason for being.

Across the upper trims there’s a wide range of choices in top confi gurations including a body color hardtop now offered in Sahara, Rubicon, or Moab form. The lineup includes base Sport, showy Sahara, and super-off-road-focused Rubicon. We’re still quite amazed at all that’s offered—more than any other off-roader.

Unique, sporty and fun

The 2014 Fiat 500 is right on the mark. It’s distinctive; it’s memorable; and it’s far from a typical small car—and that aside, it’s exactly what Chrysler needed in its lineup. All at once, the 500 is one of the smallest models on the market; an icon of style and design; a great city car for tight spaces; and a surprisingly sporty car at some times or a fuel-effi cient one at others. With that pert, upright styling, done in simple, yet somehow characterful lines, the Fiat 500 looks like no other. On the outside it manages to pull off short, tall hatchback proportions without looking awkward; and inside, it pulls off high style with relatively low-cost materials--without necessarily looking it.

Better yet, the 500 is engaging to drive by almost any measure, especially if you’re used to a toaster-like, small-car-as-appliance driving experience. Base cars get a 101-horsepower engine that’s not quite as peppy or perky as

you’d expect in something with the 500’s design; but the Turbo models and their 135-hp engine are the ones that make good on the promises of the exterior. Above that, it’s the 160-horsepower Abarth that actually feels truly sporty, especially in the fi rst three gears of this manual-transmission-only model. The Abarth also supplements that impression with an especially raucous exhaust note. As you work up the power range, you also work up to more sporty visual cues and more fi rmly tuned suspensions. Even in the sporty Abarth, however, ride quality is quite good for a lightweight, short-wheelbase car.

There are so many choices for customization, and we expect these to get even more extensive for 2014. With a long list of exterior colors, different seat color and materials options, as well as accessories, the chances of seeing the same 500 as yours out on the street are very low.

2014 JEEP WRANGLER

2014 DODGE JOURNEY

It’s still got a HEMI!

The Ram 1500 pushes even further ahead, in its quest to be the most effi cient full-size truck.

Last year the Ram added a host of new features. The highlights? An eight-speed automatic transmission, a new air suspension, and a more refi ned cabin, with a new Uconnect Touch infotainment system and much-improved materials and trims.

Over the years, that scaled-down big-rig look has made it easy to spot the Ram 1500 from a distance. The changes wrought in 2013 are carried over to 2014: the grille is slightly taller than before 2013, and the Ram crosshair grille is now fl ush.

The foglamps are new, and so are the headlamps--a twin-beam projector design with LED running lamps, turn signals, side-marker lamps, and tail lamps. Inside, the Ram 1500’s cabin still looks fantastic: the reworked center stack and climate-control, multimedia and infotainment interfaces are the best of all trucks.

Chrysler’s Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 is the base engine in the Ram 1500, and it’s tuned for 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque in the full-size truck. It’s powerful enough for casual truck users, and is rated at 17/25 mpg--18 mpg city when stop/start technology is specifi ed, making it the

best full-size truck by a wide margin. New for the 2014 model year is the excellent EcoDiesel, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel six that make the Ram 1500 the fi rst full-size light-duty pickup to offer a diesel in Canada. It’s rated at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft, same as it is when it’s fi tted in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it’s coupled to the eight-speed automatic.

Offered in a range of models, it’s priced nearly $3,000 higher than a similarly equipped Ram with a HEMI V-8, but fuel economy is promised to be strikingly higher.

HEMI models now make 395 horsepower and 407 pound-feet, and they incorporate both variable valve timing (VVT) and a cylinder shut-off system. A version of the new eight-speed automatic is paired with the HEMI, though a few of the lower-cost trims continue to carry over the six-speed automatic.

Other features offered in the Ram lineup are rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, and a power-sliding rear window with defrost.

Don’t miss the innovative RamBox cargo management system either; it’s now locked and unlocked with the vehicle’s central locking system. By far this is the truck to beat in Canada! We love it.

The 2014 MAZDA3’s fuel economy is kilometers ahead - literally. Which means you can drive up to 1,000 km on just one tank of gas. Not only does the outstanding fuel effi ciency mean fewer stops for fi ll-ups, but it also means peace of mind knowing you are consuming fewer resources.

Kilometers Ahead

Completely Connected. Effortlessly Engaging.

With the innovative MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system, you’ll enjoy a fully integrated relationship between you and your MAZDA3. With so many connectivity features located right at your fi ngertips, you can engage with a wide range of content while staying focused on the road ahead. The available HMI Commander Switch allows you to easily control audio and navigation functions and see it all on the available high-mount color touchscreen display. Plus, with a host of audio options like available Bose® Centerpoint® 2 Surround Sound System, available SiriusXM® Satellite Radio, standard USB port and MP3 capability, staying connected to the world while you’re connected to the road is effortless, instinctive and fun.

Achieving the impossible is nothing new for Mazda engineers. While other car companies compromise power to improve fuel effi ciency, we’ve taken a dramatically different approach with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. Far more than just an engine with hybrid-like effi ciency, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is a holistic system that

takes the entire car into consideration. A matrix of next-generation innovations seamlessly works together to improve not only fuel economy but also the overall driving experience. Power and performance are delivered in abundance, along with effi ciencies that offer up to a fuel-sipping estimated 4.7L/100 km highway.

SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGYPerformance & efficiency as one.

How do you improve on a car that already exceeds expectations? A car that wins accolades year after year? Just ask Mazda engineers.

They re-imagined a vehicle that puts you in complete control and drives exactly the way you want it to drive - the kind of car you want to keep driving. And then Mazda engineers built it. From the

ground up, the all-new 2014 MAZDA3 is a new kind of car, built on a new way of thinking using new technology that optimizes driving dynamics, control, fuel economy - and fun.

From SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY’s fuel-saving engineering and our innovative connectivity features, to mood-elevating KODO “Soul of

Motion” design, the MAZDA3 is the culmination of courageous engineering, creative design and fearless conviction.

Better than ever before and as versatile as it’s always been, the MAZDA3 proves that one car can offer everything - all in a fun-to-drive, affordable package.

2014 MAZDA3Mazda Engineers Love Achieving Perfection

The art of safetyWho approaches safety as if it were fi ne art? We do. Both active and

passive safety features on the 2014 MAZDA3 are artfully engineered and intricately crafted to help keep you and your precious passengers and cargo secure. Like our state-of-the-art i-ACTIVSENSE technology that senses the car’s surroundings, helping the driver to proactively respond to driving hazards. Plus there’s a comprehensive matrix of passive safety features that helps keep you safe in the event a collision cannot be avoided, including SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY’s ultra-high-tensile steel. From air bags to radar-based brake support, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to Blind Spot Monitoring, safety is more than practical - it’s a fi nely honed art.

All New 2015 GMC Sierra HD: smart, capable and comfortable

Bold style, enhanced interior and helpful technologies support class-leading capabilities.

“Forget the notion that heavy-duty trucks are basic tools with a trailer hitch,” said Tony DiSalle, vice-president of GMC Marketing. “The 2015 Sierra HD trucks can haul the heaviest load with unmatched comfort and technology that make the job easier.”

Additional new and enhanced features for the 2015 Sierra HD lineup:

•CornerStep rear bumper, EZ Lift and Lower tailgate, standard upper tie-downs and other features that make cargo handling easier

•Standard StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control on all models, including 3500 HD dually

•Integrated cruise control, auto grade braking and diesel exhaust braking (diesel models), for greater driving control and reduced brake wear on grades

•Enhanced cooling air ow, which enables the Duramax turbo diesel and 6.0L gas engine to better maintain full power, even under heavy loads and high ambient temperatures

•Latest-generation IntelliLink infotainment system with available navigations, which offers a variety of connectivity options for devices of all types.

THE TRUCK THAT ANSWERS HEAVY-DUTY DEMANDSThere’s no secret about what you need from a

pickup — strength, power, vast hauling capacities and an impeccable record of reliability. And there’s no secret why the GMC Sierra 2500HD retains such a loyal following among serious truckers — because of its exemplary work ethic, building on GMC’s more than 100 years of truck–building experience.

FULLY BOXED FRAME

While GMC’s engineers were focused on strength, they also ensured that ride quality wasn’t sacri ced. Both objectives were accomplished by the sturdy, hydroformed, fully boxed frame that uses high–strength steel to increase structural rigidity, resist bending, twisting and shaking. This helps isolate road noise and contributes to Sierra HD’s smooth driving dynamics.

BOLD STYLING DETAILS

Sierra 2500HD has a brash look that is instantly recognizable. A series of styling cues reinforce its rugged character — from the chrome grille surround and chrome bumpers to the available 20–inch polished aluminum wheels.

2014 GMC TERRAIN

THE NO-COMPROMISE COMPACT CROSSOVERMuscular style. Effi cient power. Comfort and cargo-

carrying capability you’d expect from a larger, thirstier vehicle. Terrain delivers it all, no compromises required. Add in advanced technologies, superior fi t and fi nish and exceptional safety features and you’ll see why the Canadian-built GMC Terrain is the total package

EXTERIORWith its broad-shouldered style and bold details,

(NC) No matter where you drive, you never know when something could go wrong. You could get a fl at tire, get stuck in traffi c, get into an accident, have a break down, or slide into a ditch on a less travelled road. This is why it’s important to be prepared and that includes a well-equipped emergency kit.

Even if you subscribe to roadside assistance, emergency kits are essential because you never know how long it will take for help to arrive.

“Even if you have road side assistance coverage you still may have to wait a while for help to arrive, especially in poor weather conditions,” says Achiel Goossens, Senior Manager of Auto Claims with Aviva Canada. “Your comfort and safety is at stake, so an emergency kit will fi ll in while you are waiting.”

What items should you include?• Goossens points out that these are the

essentials: A cell phone (if you don’t carry one with you);

• First aid kit;• Bottled water and snacks;• A blanket, gloves, and

additional warm clothing for the winter months;

• Flashlight and batteries;• Tire gauge and jumper

cables;• Small tool kit. While the essentials above

are suggested for general information only, any additional

items would be based on your driving frequency and the climate where you drive.

Be more fuel

efficient(NC)—An informed consumer is an empowered consumer

especially when it comes to understanding the fuel ef ciency of the vehicles we drive.

Vehicle manufacturers test their own vehicles using standardized testing procedures. The information from these tests is then used to generate fuel consumption data. Environment Canada collects this data from manufacturers and Natural Resources Canada uses it and other information to publish its annual Fuel Consumption Guide. These same ratings appear on EnerGuide labels and are af xed to all new light-duty vehicles at the point-of-sale.

Since it would be almost impossible to drive every new vehicle model or duplicate on-road testing due to fuel consumption variables that can affect a vehicle’s performance, a controlled laboratory testing method is followed. This ensures consistency whereby all vehicles are tested under identical conditions and where the results are consistent and repeatable.

Fuel consumption ratings are based on two test cycles: city tests, which simulate urban driving in stop-and-go traf c and highway tests, which simulate a mixture of open highway and rural road driving, typical of longer trips.

Fuel consumption ratings are meant to allow consumers to compare vehicles while being assured that the same testing procedures are being used by all manufacturers. While in many cases it is possible for a driver to meet or exceed a particular vehicle’s fuel ratings, fuel consumption ratings are based on a speci c testing protocol.

In short, your over the road fuel consumption can be affected by:

Your driving style and behaviour;Vehicle acceleration, braking and driving speed;Overall age and condition of your vehicle;Temperature, weather, traf c and road conditions;Drive systems and powered accessories such as air

conditioning or heated seats and mirrors; In addition, small variations in vehicle manufacturing

will cause fuel consumption differences in the same make and model and some vehicles do not attain optimal fuel consumption until a break-in period of 6,000 to 10,000 km.

You can download a Fuel Consumption Guide atwww.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

(NC)—Winter driving will soon be upon us and that means navigating Canadian roads in all kinds of conditions. By understanding the toll that winter driving takes on our roads, vehicles, bank accounts and the environment, we can all contribute to safe, responsible, fuel-effi cient winter driving.

For starters, it simply costs more to drive in winter because our vehicles use more fuel. Factors such as increased aerodynamic resistance, diffi cult and constantly changing road conditions, gas with less energy content compared to summer gas and the constant drain on electricity coming from the engine to operate

systems such as heating,

defrosting, head lights,

interior lights, heated

seats and mirrors and windshield washer pumps are all factors.

The way to get around the extra expense is to keep fuel effi ciency top of mind at all times.

Don’t idle to warm up. A vehicle left idling for 10 minutes burns about a quarter to half a litre of fuel, resulting in emissions of about 600 to 1,200 grams of CO2 depending on the vehicle and exact conditions. Idling for more than 30 seconds has no benefi t for the vehicle and driving for a few minutes is the most effi cient way to warm the engine and the cabin.

Monitor your tire pressure.Tire pressure fl uctuates with temperature. Pressure should be checked at least once a month and more often during seasonal changes to ensure a proper level of

infl ation. Tires under-

infl ated by just 56 kPa (eight pounds per square inch) can reduce the life of the

tires by more than 10,000 km and increase fuel consumption by up to four percent.

Avoid electrical battery blankets and space heaters.Battery blankets and electrical space heaters consume household electricity, causing increased CO2 emissions from electricity generation. Avoid battery blankets unless it’s

extremely cold. Instead of an electrical space heater, use your vehicle’s built-in temperature control system as it produces no additional emissions and is an excellent use for the otherwise wasted engine heat.

Use a block heater. Block heaters heat the coolant in your engine, which allows your engine to warm-up faster, leading to less fuel combustion and fewer harmful emissions. It’s best to use a timer set to turn on two hours prior to starting the engine.

According to the experts at Natural Resources Canada’s Offi ce of Energy Effi ciency, Canadians can reduce the impact of winter on their fuel consumption considerably by following these tips.

There are more winter driving tips at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

In its second year on the market, the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek appears to have succeeded in defi ning a new category of all-wheel drive vehicles to the market. You might call it the compact hatchback crosover. With higher ground clearance, bigger tires, and a few mechanical upgrades joining the added body cladding and other styling changes that turned a base Impreza fi ve-door hatchback into a remarkably different-looking vehicle, the Crosstrek enters 2014 with a new powertrain option: Subaru’s fi rst-

2014 SUBARU XV CROSSTREK

Subaru’s first-ever hybridever hybrid.

The standard 2014 XZ Crosstrek comes with a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter fl at-four engine paired either with a fi ve-speed manual gearbox or Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.

Otherwise, both Crosstreks can be viewed like good cross-trainer shoes: tough enough for a variety of situations, but not honed for one particular task. The XV Crosstrek has a brawny appearnce that’s surprisingly different in stand from its Impreza hatchback base. It handles like a passenger

car - and it offers versatile and impressive cargo capacity for ski gear, camping supplies, or just groceries and boxes. Subaru also notes that the hybrid version’s battery pack is stowed under the deck, meaning that its cargo volume is unchanged from the conventional version.

The cabin of the XV Crosstrek is largely the same as the Impreza, meaning adults can get in and out of all four doors and four of them will fi t fi ne front and rear. Crosstrek models come rated to tow up to 1,500 pounds, too.

All Crosstreks come

with keyless entry, air conditioning, power accessories, and cruise control, as well - of course - as all-wheel

drive. They also get a step-up display audio system with 4.3-inch screen, and HD radio, and a navigation system

with XM NavTraffi c, voice control, and test-messaging ability is optional. The XV is the most fuel effi cient AWD

vehicle in Canada. All in, we like this

handy new hatchback crossover a great deal. Nice job Subaru!

The best performing compact SUV on the planet

The distinctive hood scoop is gone, but die-hard fans of the Subaru Forester XT can rest assured that the XT is still the performance champ in the Forester lineup for 2014.

Boasting a 250 hp 2.0-litre direct injection four-cylinder engine with a twin-scroll turbocharger and mated with an updated continuously variable transmission (CVT), the XT is one of the best performing compact SUVs on the planet. It is extremely quick for a vehicle of this kind (0-100 km/ in 6.2 seconds, according to Subaru). Power in the XT has been increased by 20 hp this year, yet Subaru says fuel economy is best in class for all-wheel drive SUVs. But this is just part of the story for the Forester that helped create the crossover segment back in 1997 and has developed a loyal following ever since.

Since the Forester is one of the core products in Subaru’s lineup (accounting for 23 per cent of the

31,003 units of 2012 sales in Canada), getting the resdesign right for 2014 was crucial.

When Subaru set out on the design path for the new model, their goals were to enhance the core strengths of the previous generation-safety, utility and performance - and improve on the weak points such as fuel economy, interior roominess and the transmission. After driving the Forester on rugged stretches of Vancouver Island at the Canadian launch earlier this year and then recently spending a week with an XT model in Souther Ontario, the Subaru proved successful on all counts.

With all this competition, the Forester has upped the ante for 2014 with the changes noted above. And for those who want a dab of performance along with the utilities of a compact SUV, the Forester XT fi ts the bill quite nicely.

The new R is powered by the newest version of VW’s 2.0-liter TSI engine (internally known as the EA888), but with even more power than the mill found in the GTI. Output is rated at 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. That’s a signifi cant power bump over the previous-generation Golf R.

Further distinguishing itself from the rest of the Mk7 Golf models, the R puts its power to all four wheels (rather than just the front) via the VW 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. This system can disengage the rear wheels when cruising for reduced drivetrain drag and increased fuel economy. Though basically a front-driver when you don’t need all-wheel, the system’s Haldex coupling can instantly and automatically re-engage the rear axle in a fraction of a second when rear-end torque is needed via a electrohydraulic oil pump. Up to 100 per cent of available torque can be sent to the rear axle when conditions dictate. This 4Motion system also makes use of the R’s ABS as “electronic differentials” applying the brakes briefl y to an individual wheel to control slipping wheels.

Thanks to technologies such as start-stop ignition and brake energy regeneration, as well as internal engine upgrades that aid in friction and thermal effi ciency, VW was able to increase the Golf R’s combined fuel economy to 33 and 34 mpg on the EU testing cycle for the manual and DSG models, respectively. That’s up from the previous generation R’s 28 mpg combined. US/EPA estimates have not yet been announced.

Inside the cabin, the Golf R is treated to R-specifi c seating and dashboard trim and the newest-generation Volkswagen infotainment and navigation. Touch-screen controls are standard on the Golf R with 5-inch, 5.8-inch, and 8-inch displays available. The two largest sizes also feature a clever proximity feature that automatically switches the display confi guration to be ready to accept inputs when the driver’s or front passenger’s hand approaches the screen.

All Golf R models have four drive modes that change the characteristics of the throttle, engine, and transmission between Normal, Eco, and Race modes, as well as a driver-customizable Individual setting. Drivers who opt to equip VW’s DCC (dynamic chassis control) system -- an adaptive suspension system by any other name -- gain the additional option to adjust the suspension settings and characteristics at the touch of a button, as well as a fi fth driving mode, Comfort. The system is also able to continuously monitor and adjust damper settings based on conditions reported by the Golf R’s various sensors.

Cool fun that’s hotter than ever!

The 2014 Tiguan R-Line is the scion of that fi rst-generation compact crossover and joins the Touareg, Beetleand CC in the brotherhood.

What it provides is better looks for the same heart: every Tiguan carries a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine up front, turbocharged and intercooled, sending the same 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet either to the front wheels or to all four via a Haldex-clutch-equipped 4Motion system. Volkswagen touts the option of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, but such buyer discretion only applies to the front-wheel-drive model. If you want 4Motion, you have to get the automatic, and the R-Line cannot be had with a manual. Tiguan FWD city 27mpg 12L/100km highway 37mpg 7.7L/100 km AWD 27mpg 12L/100 km highway 36mpg 7.8L/100km.

R-Line interior extras include leather seating surfaces and power front seats along with a fl at-bottomed, leather-wrapped steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and aluminum sill plates. The interior is a premium VW affair with leather that exudes all the right vibes and everything else feeling soft to the touch. The choice materials and two-tone instrument panel overcome the minimalism of the center console and the huge sunroof keeping the cabin bright. A very nice Fender audio system is standard, and so is a trial of Volkswagen’s new Car-Net connected services suite (the People’s Car version of OnStar).

(NC) No matter where you intend to drive this winter, take your time getting there and be prepared for an unplanned roadside stop, says Western Canada’s largest network of insurance brokers.

From coast to coast, winter brings an increase in accident claims, adds Denise Lang, regional vice president at Western Financial Group, a company providing car, property, and life insurance to more than 790,000 customers. Whether it’s driving in heavy rain during the darker days, a trip up to the cold climates of a local ski hill, or getting to work on a snow day, the winter season spells trouble for motorists.

“The number of accidents goes up in the winter, especially after the fi rst snowfall which typically accounts for the highest number of collisions,” Lang continued. “After a few months of summer road trips, people forget to take the necessary precautions for winter driving. Planning ahead and taking the time to make sure you know what to do in winter conditions is paramount for your safety, which is also our number one

concern.”On average, customer

claims can go up more than a third during the winter months compared to the rest of the year, according to industry data.

However, there are some

simple steps to avoid a winter collision during subpar driving conditions, says Lang. Some of her top tips include: increase your following distance; focus your attention as far ahead as possible to anticipate lane changes, turns and curves; avoid passing other vehicles; slow down and allow extra time to get to your destination.

With a career in claims spanning more than two

decades, one of the main things Lang has learned is that motorists are completely unprepared for being stranded roadside – a situation made worse in winter. Drivers should dress for the elements and have a winter emergency kit, she points out. “People have a garage-to-garage mentality in terms of going from their house to their destination. The normal story I hear is people just throwing on a pair of shoes and a light jacket before getting in their car,” Lang continued. “Even in the city if you get in an accident or have car problems, a two-walk block or multiple-hour wait for assistance could jeopardize your personal health and safety.”

Among Lang’s list of must-haves in your car are: fully charged cell phone, fl ashlight, fi rst-aid kit, blanket, shovel and sand, emergency food pack, booster cables, warning light or road fl ares, and extra windshield fl uid.

And if the unforeseen should happen, Lang stresses that motorists should safeguard themselves if they get out of their car.

“I strongly encourage everyone if their car is driveable, to pull off to a safe place and to use caution when they get out for assessing the damage. By lingering in moving traffi c, you risk causing another accident or being seriously hurt by a passing vehicle,” she warns.

More tips on safe winter driving and car insurance can be found at www.westernfi nancialgroup.ca.

(NC)—Watch for battery-powered vehicles to become increasingly prominent in passenger vehicles as automakers respond to progressively more stringent greenhouse gas regulations. Electric vehicles are extremely attractive to consumers who want to reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating or reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

There are two basic types of electric vehicles available in Canada: battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).

BEV and PHEV use electricity to achieve greater operating effi ciency and reduced energy and fuel consumption. Both vehicle types are plugged into the electric power grid to charge on-board battery packs and both use electric drive systems. BEV are electric-only, while PHEV supplement the electric drive with a comparatively small internal combustion engine to increase driving range.

BEV use an electric propulsion system for all phases of driving. 100 per cent of their propulsion comes from a zero-emission electric motor, powered by electricity from large on-board battery packs that can be recharged from the electric power grid or an external source.

PHEV use both an electric motor and internal combustion engine. PHEV can charge their batteries using electricity from the electric power grid, enabling the fi rst kilometres travelled to be driven solely on electric power. Before the batteries become depleted, the vehicle will automatically engage the internal combustion engine. For example, the Chevrolet Volt has an all-electric range of about 65 kms and a total range of about 580 kms with the gasoline-powered engine.

You can fi nd more information about electric vehicles on the Natural Resources Canada website at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.

A fi rst facelift for the fi fth-generation small sedan from South Korea, which is now three years old, the “Series II” Hyundai Elantra on the outside gets new square bezels for its headlights, a revised bumper and darkened tail-lights. Interior changes are slightly more extensive, with the central air vents raised to face level height, fl anking either side of a new touchscreen infotainment system.

Unchanged is a three-tier model range, all of which continue to utilize a 1.8-litre petrol four-cylinder engine producing 110kW of power at 6,500 rpm and a healthy 178Nm of torque at 4,700 rpm.

Other features already standard include 15-inch steel wheels, cruise control, power windows, four-speaker audio with CD player and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a height and tilt

adjustable steering wheel with audio controls.

Plenty of rear legroom is available back there, backed by a comfortable bench, and even further back there’s a sizeable 420-litre trunk with the practicality of a 60:40 split backrest standard.

Then there’s the car-buying piece of mind of Hyundai’s benchmark fi ve-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, in addition to 12 months roadside assistance and a three-year capped price servicing program.

Its mission is accomplished on rough country roads where the updated model is hugely improved compared with the outgoing Hyundai Elantra.

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra has been replaced with a calmness and sophistication that marks the Series II in a fi ne tourer on all road surfaces in town or cruising.

2014 HYUNDAI ELANTRA

Power forwardHyundai’s betting that new styling, along with

better performance and a more fl exible interior, will vault the Santa Fe into the top tier of those ranks.

It’s easy to see how its looks will go far. The Santa Fe’s a grown-up ute from the outside alone, and its new two-tone interior makes for one sophisticated crossover.

Crossovers are all about room and utility, and the Santa Fe does not come up short. The Santa Fe’s front seats are a step up from the most recent Hyundai vintage, with better support built into the bottom cushion. But the second row is where the action is: on some models, the second row slides on a 5.2-inch track for better fl exibility.

The two-row Santa Fe Sport is offered with both a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower, and a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder producing 264 horsepower. The engines feature direct-injection technology and six-speed automatic transmissions for better fuel economy and more power. Front- and all-wheel drive confi gurations will be offered with both engines. With the Sport, there’s no doubt which engine’s a more convincing trade-off of economy and performance: it’s the turbo by far, which drops only a couple of miles per gallon highway while turning in very capable acceleration. As for the rest of the Santa Fe driving experience, it’s very smooth and effortless. The Santa Fe Sport makes the usual Hyundai case for value. It gets power windows, locks, and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; tilt/telescoping steering; steering-wheel audio and phone controls; and 17-inch wheels. The standard audio system is an AM/FM/CD player with satellite radio, USB and auxiliary ports, Bluetooth and audio streaming, and six speakers. A panoramic sunroof, Infi nity audio, and an improved navigation system lift the Santa Fe to a higher plateau. Push-button start, automatic climate control, and heated-and-cooled front seats are available on some models.

The Santa Fe Sport have the usual airbags and stability control, and the option of all-wheel drive. Bluetooth is standard and a rearview camera is an option on all but the base model. Blind-spot monitors and parking sensors are new options for 2014. The Santa Fe Sport earned top ‘good’ scores in all categories, and the IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2013. It really is an excellent vehicle in the Hyundai lineup.

It’s easy to see how its looks will go far. The Santa

KIA Canada

is proud and honoured that the

all-new

2014 Soul and

2014 Sorento have been awarded the coveted titles of

Best New Family Car

and

Best New SUV by the Automotive JournalistsAssociation of Canada (AJAC).

DL #8809

The Kia Soul was arguably the car that started people looking at the brand as more than a purveyor of “inexpensive and cheerful” transportation.

It arrived about the same time of a number of other “downtown Tokyo” inspired square-sided cars that were as big as possible on the inside and the reverse on the outside.

The Soul was somehow different, with a huge helping of Peter Schreyer styling inside and out applied to a stout package and reliable running gear under the skin.

When it came to the 2014 Soul, Kia had three objectives: maintain the iconic design while adding modern cues; provide premium features and content and improve driving dynamics to make the 2014 Soul more desirable than ever.

While the overall shape is the same, there are a number of styling differences, many borrowed from the Track’ster concept Kia showcased two years ago.

The new model is slightly wider with a 20 mm longer wheelbase but the roof is 10 mm lower. The high mounted taillights are larger. The signature “tiger mouth” grille is still visible, but it is more ornamental than anything else. The grille is supplemented by a much larger, lower air inlet.

Inside, the Soul benefi ts from soft-touch materials and available leather trimmed seating along with the use of high gloss piano black trim pieces on the centre console, doors and dash.

Most prominent is a new instrument panel with an available eight-inch touch

screen multimedia interface with voice-activated navigation. It is the largest ever offered on Soul. Furthermore, the available

larger Supervision Cluster/TFT LCD colour screen found in the instrument cluster now displays user settings and turn-by-turn directions from the navigation system.

The three large rotary knobs for the climate control can be used with winter gloves on, a nice feature.

One of several methods used to lessen interior noise intrusion is the use of expansion foam in the chassis cavities

instead of block foam. The application of structural adhesive around the door openings and along the roof also helps

improve torsional rigidity. The chassis is 29 per cent stiffer with

66 per cent made from ultra high-strength steel, which results in a stouter platform that anchors the suspension. Kia engineers heavily revised the front struts and rear twist beam suspensions.

Standard across the Soul line is a new FlexSteer system, which allows the driver to select from three distinct steering settings -

Comfort, Normal and Sport. The shock absorbers on the torsion bar

rear suspension have been placed vertically instead of at an angle on the previous Soul. The result is more suspension travel and improving ride comfort.

There are two engines on this front-driver starting with a 1.6-litre DOHC direct injection four-cylinder in the base LX model producing 130 hp and 118 lb/ft of torque with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The EX and SX trim models get a larger 2.0-litre DOHC direct injection four-cylinder with 164 hp and 151 lb/ft. The EX offers a choice of either transmission while the topline SX is automatic only.

Automatic versions get a button activated Kia Active Eco system that changes the engine mapping and throttle response. Also available is start/stop and low resistance tires on the “Eco” trim models.

Fuel consumption for the 1.6-litre is 8.6/6.5L/100 km for the manual and 8.4/6.5L/100 km with the Eco automatic. For the 2.0-litre the fuel rating is 8.8/6.5L/100 km for the manual and 8.4/6.5L/100 km for the Eco automatic.

The cabin is larger, with a wider rear liftgate to access the 532 litres of cargo room.

Funky and frugal is what the 2014 Kia Soul has in spades but don’t forget it also has more than enough space for fi ve people and their luggage.

Think of the new Soul as hip for any kind of trip.

More playful than ever

2014 TOYOTA COROLLA

It’s the largest volume selling car of all time. Sold in 154 countries and produced in 16 locations around the world including Canada, Corolla accounts for 25 per cent of total sales for the biggest automaker on the globe.

At the Canadian press launch of the 2014 Corolla, the importance of the 11th generation compact sedan to Toyota’s viability was stressed repeatedly.

Corolla practically invented the compact car segment, building its reputation on quality, practicality and reliability. In fact, some 80 per cent of Corollas built in the Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMMC) plant in Cambridge, Ont., are still on the road.

TMMC has been producing Corollas since the first one, a Mica Blue sedan, rolled off the assembly line on November 30, 1988. To date, more than 1.3 million Corollas have been sold in Canada and it is the most massed produced car in history with more than 40 million and counting.

Those core attributes remain unchanged in the 2014 Corolla that went on sale in Canada on Sept. 3.

But what has changed is Corolla’s attitude.

Folks, this is one car you have to see in the flesh, especially beside an older model.

Buyers can chose from two versions of its 1.8-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder with 132 hp and 128 lb/ft of torque on the CE, LE and Sport and 140 hp and 126 lb/ft of torque on the Eco, which Toyota calls its most fuel efficient and powerful Corolla ever.

Also new on the LE, S and Eco is a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that Toyota calls the CVTi-S (I for intelligent, S for shift). The CVT is the first pulley-style unit in North America.

The base CE has a four-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

The Eco is a new trim model that uses the engine tuned for fuel economy and underbody panels plus low rolling resistance tires for greater overall efficiency.

The new Corolla’s suspension uses a Macpherson strut design for the front with a new, more rigid control arm design.

A torsion beam arrangement is used for the rear. Both suspension layouts have been designed to take advantage of the additional body rigidity to provide improved handling responses and steering control.

While the spring rates on Corolla have been optimized for ride comfort, the S-model features unique coil, damper, and bushing tuning to help offer a sportier

driving characteristic. When journalists came back from

driving the new Corolla, all they could talk about was the CVT.

“It’s a CVT that doesn’t act like one,” said my co-driver meaning the whine and leisurely acceleration of early CVTs was not present.

We spent all of our time in the S model with the more sporting suspension, with my co-driver, an accomplished racecar driver and go-kart instructor, whistling through some back roads north of Quebec City.

In manual shift mode, the CVT has seven speeds actuated by paddle shifters. With the engine on full song, and the paddle shifters being played like a ragtime piano, crisp shifts up and down were felt through the steering wheel and the seat.

This is the first CVT I’ve come across that’s fun to use and, unbelievably, in a car costing under twenty grand.

But while most people will never take the Corolla on the Nurburgring, they will use it for just about everything else a family needs.

While the 2014 Corolla is slightly longer, wider and lower which accounts for its small appearance, most of the volume is set aside for five adults.

With the front passenger seat all the way back, I rode in the rear during the afternoon and can report there was more than enough legroom to the point I actual dozed off for a few minutes such, was the smoothness of the ride and that on potholed Quebec roads.

I have to mention the front seats, that while larger, have a new thinner back that is supportive for those in front while gaining precious knee room millimeters for those in the back.

Trunk space is larger than the 2013 model at 369 litres (13.0 cu ft) primarily due to the higher deck lid. That in turn makes ordering a version with the backup camera something to seriously consider.

And of course I cannot stress how important the Corolla is to the Canadian and Ontario economies.

How it is built is a direct reflection of what this country can do and I challenge anyone to find a misaligned body panel or shut line on this car. Believe me, I looked at each and every one at the press launch.

The Corolla is more than the start of Toyota’s avowed goal to become the best selling compact car in Canada but it could be a game changer for the brand around the world.

If it ain’t broke – refine it, could sum up the 2014 Toyota Tundra full-size pickup now on sale across Canada.

The Tundra first debuted as a 2000 model and it has been a learning curve for Toyota all the way, when one considers Ford/GM/Chrysler have been at it for almost a century.

And while Toyota has been building trucks in Japan for 80 years, a North American half-ton is very different, not to mention lucrative, creature compared to anything else in the world.

When the Tundra first came out, it was noticeably smaller than its main rivals and the only engine available was a 3.4-litre V6 borrowed from the Toyota SUV parts bin.

By the time the second generation came out in 2007, Toyota had a 4.6-litre and 5.7-litre V8 in addition to a 4.0-litre V6. While the V8s are retained for 2014, Canada won’t be getting any V6 models.

In terms of platform and engines, the Tundra still rides on a full frame with boxed front end with a choice of rear- or four-wheel-drive.

Both V8s have been enhanced for more power and less fuel consumption.

The base engine is the 4.6-litre, DOHC i-Force V8 with 310 hp and 327 lb/ft of torque. Fuel ratings are: 14.2/10.5/12.5L/100km (city/hwy/combined) for the 4x2 models and 15.2/10.9/13.3L/100km (city/hwy/combined) for the 4x4 models.

The 5.7-litre, DOHC i-Force V8 is the most popular with 381 hp and 401 lb/ft. Fuel numbers here are 15.8/11.0/13.6L/100km (city/hwy/combined) for the 4X2 and 16.3/11.9/14.3L/100km (city/hwy/combined) for the 4X4.

If you opt for the 4X4, the system used is a part-time version that allows you to switch on the fly from 2WD to 4Hi. But to switch to 4Lo, you must first stop, place the Tundra in neutral and then push and turn the drive mode selector. The reverse must be done when switching back to 4Hi or 2WD.

Toyota listened to buyers who said Tundra needed to look more aggressive and the interiors just plain had to go.

So for 2014, the Tundra was sent to Toyota’s Calty design centre in California for a complete makeover.

Right off the bat, you can’t miss the glittering grille which is now 40 per cent larger and grafted into a hood that has been raised and given a wide secondary air intake.

Body panels and fenders have a chiselled look. There’s a rear spoiler integrated into the tailgate and strakes are used liberally for looks and as vortex

generators to reduce drag.

A clever touch is a three-piece rear bumper with the outside

two parts being detachable. If one is damaged at a work site, it can simply be replaced instead of the entire bumper.

The model lineup has been rationalized with five models, the SR, SR5, Limited and two premium trim levels, the Platinum and 1794, the latter named after the founding year of the ranch near San Antonio, Texas, which was bought by Toyota 10 years ago and turned into the Tundra production plant.

With a backup camera as standard on all models, there are three cabs (Regular, Double Cab and CrewMax). Tundra Regular Cab is offered in Long Bed 2,480 mm (97.7 in), and Double Cab models are offered in standard bed 2,000 mm (78.7 in) or long bed 2,480 mm (97.6 in) configurations, while the CrewMax comes with a 1,695 mm (66.7 in) bed. All beds are 564 mm (22.2 in) deep.

With saddle-like tan coloured leather and rich matching wood trim, the 1794 (CrewMax only) now gives Toyota entry into the luxury pickup market against competitors such as the new Chev Silverado High Country and the Ford F-150 Limited.

Toyota is very proud of the fact Tundra can haul up a 12 per cent grade with a fully loaded trailer.

On the off-road section of the vast Toyota plant, shifting into 4Lo was simple enough before heading up what looked like a 30 per cent grade. Back on the highway heading to the hotel after a day at the plant, I rode in the 1794 as we let the navigation/infotainment system plot the course and take us home.

All Tundra models feature the standard Toyota Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop (SST) brake override technology.

Here in Canada, Toyota feels there are several reasons why the 2014 Tundra is more than a viable alternative to the Big Three.

First and foremost is Toyota build quality and reliability, which are virtues that are understood by buyers.

But more to the point is the target market in Canada — people who now realize the value in owning a truck but are not those who want to buy Ford/GM/Chrysler.

They are also younger, more affluent and trust the brand, something Toyota Canada feels is a major plus.

Nevertheless, Toyota Canada knows it is still in an uphill fight, but the company believes, with the 2014 Tundra, they have the right truck to drive a change in perceptions.
