My Temple family,

When I prepare for the High Holidays, I?m always reminded what a wonderful t ime of the year it is. I look forward to celebrating the holiday together my family: to cook together, to eat delicious food, and to catch up with what?s going on with their l ives more deeply.

The Hebrew High Holidays always take place during the fall. At t imes I wonder if this is by design. Watching the leaves change, I see how nature embraces the renewal process - with beauty. When the Hebrew New Year arrives, we are reminded to do some soul searching (Heshbon HaNefesh) and ref lect on our achievement, which results in personal renewal. Sometimes, we start a new health init iative. Other times, we focus on career or on our social l ife. In essence, the Jewish New Year helps us prepare for changes in our life.

Even here at Temple Rodeph Torah we face constant changes and we take the time to ref lect. During 2018-2019 we said goodbye to our 11-year cantor, Joanna Alexander. We wish her best of luck in her new role in Omaha. In July we welcomed our new Cantor, Rick Lawrence, who came to us from Cleveland. He already started to work with our choir in preparation for the High Holidays, and without missing a beat, he prepared one of our B?Nai Mitzvah to lead a beautiful service in early September. Join me in wishing him good luck and getting to know him, as he?ll be leading selected services together with Rabbi Weber.

Looking forward into 2020-2021 we expect additional changes in our congregation. Is there ever a dull moment in our Jewish life? And just l ike in every other area of our l ife, when we experience signif icant changes, it could be dif f icult at f irst. This year we start the turn to another chapter in our congregation?s life, as Rabbi Weber retires in June 2020. We will take the time to honor his contribution to our temple and to joyfully celebrate these thirty-six years of his leadership. Our congregation has touched so many lives since 1981- it is so noteworthy that we want to continue and touch many more lives in the next chapter of our community.

Now we actively manage this transition in a structured way with the right people in place. For transparency, the Interim Rabbi Search team has posted information for you on our website at https:/ / trt.org/ interim/ . I also invite all of you to take part at the President?s Circle meetings, a place where you can share concerns, hopes, and dreams. We will meet in small groups for more intimate conversations. Invitations will be mailed out to a group at a time, and I hope that you will make the time to join me.

Lastly, during the late spring we received tremendous support, which helped us gain f irmer f inancial standing. We thank all the families who felt our congregation?s need and acted on it. We have a unique community: educated, personable, and engaged and we want to enhance the positive impact we bring to the world, inwardly and outwardly. Our High Holiday appeal, which provides around 15% of our budget, is taking place during these weeks, giving you a way to connect with our mission. Your contributions are a way to honor your Jewish background and fortify a Jewish future. No contribution is too small. Consider the option of paying in installments, if that works better for you. Your help doesn?t go unnoticed and it is appreciated.

As 5780 is upon us, help us embrace the renewal process of our community ? with beauty.

L?Shana Tova,Tmima Grinvald, Temple President

Our Search Committee encompasses a diverse group of congregants who are committed to representing the entire Temple Rodeph Torah community. The group includes representatives from long-term members to younger families and everyone in between.

To keep our congregants informed, we will post information on the TRT website. Look for the Tree of Life icon with the word ?Interim Rabbi Search?. There you will f ind updates, frequently asked questions, and a form to send us your questions and feedback.

The group has already taken the f irst step. We have submitted our application to the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

4Cantor Rick Lawrence is continuing the TRT tradition of bringing music to the bima as temple cantor starting with Selichot and the High Holy Day services.

?Music is a form of the spiritual,?? Cantor Lawrence says. It brings people together by providing a chance to learn about ?the prayers of our l ife?? for both the congregation and the cantor. ?It?s a two-way street,?? he says.

Cantor Lawrence will bring his commitment to creative music to the services, combining contemporary tunes with traditional melodies. At t imes, he adapts tunes from Broadway, movies, even Disney for children, to help explain what a prayer is all about. This approach is nothing new, the cantor says. As long as there?s been popular music, Jews have found ways to incorporate those melodies into worship.

The congregation will be involved in this process, both in singing and active listening. Cantor Lawrence composes melodies that take congregants to the time and place, a Shabbat service. He plays the keyboard and will incorporate the guitar and drums into the service. He will be assisting the Adult Choir in their part during the High Holy Days.

Cantor Lawrence has been a cantor since 2014. He joins TRT from Temple Emanu El in Orange, Ohio, outside Cleveland. But he says ?music has been in my blood since I was tiny.?? He grew up in Ann Arbor, Mich. His parents sang Kingston Trio duets on their f irst date. When his sister became 8, she joined her parents in singing Peter, Paul & Mary duets. When Cantor Lawrence turned 8, the family sang barbershop quartets. ?We stil l sing together to this day,?? he says.

He traces his decision to combine Jewish studies and music to a summer job as assistant music director at Star Island off the coast of Portsmouth, N.H. He was asked to lead music for a Unitarian Shabbat service. Afterward, a guest told him his ?entire face lit up?? while singing. That convinced him that he had a cantorial future. He received his bachelor?s degree in Jewish studies from Oberlin College. He received his cantorial ordination and master?s degree in Jewish education from Hebrew College.

Cantor Lawrence says he was drawn to TRT because ?people seem to care. ?? It?s the practice of ?informed Judaism.?? This includes doing good deeds for the community, learning at all ages, a deepening commitment to Judaism through self-education, knowing what?s out there.

He lives in West Philadelphia with his wife, Meredith. She is a second-year pediatric resident at the Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Upcoming Holidays

Rosh HaShanahRosh HaShanah (literally, ?Head of the Year?) is the Jewish New Year, a time of prayer, self-ref lection, and repentance. We review our actions during the past year, and we look for ways to improve ourselves, our communities, and our world in the year to come. The holiday marks the beginning of a 10-day period, known as the Yamim Nora-im (?Days of Awe? or ?High Holidays?), ushered in by Rosh HaShanah and culminating with Yom Kippur (the ?Day of Atonement?). Rosh HaShanah is widely observed by Jews throughout the world, often with prayer and ref lection in a synagogue. There also are several holiday rituals observed at home.

Rosh HaShanah is celebrated on the f irst day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which ? because of dif ferences in the solar and lunar calendar ? corresponds to September or October on the Gregorian or secular calendar. Customs associated with the holiday include sounding the shofar, eating a round challah, and tasting apples and honey to represent a sweet New Year.

Y om K ippurYom Kippur means "Day of Atonement" and refers to the annual Jewish observance of fasting, prayer and repentance. Part of the High Holidays, which also includes Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New Year), Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Yom Kippur is the moment in Jewish time when we dedicate our mind, body, and soul to reconciliation with our fellow human beings, ourselves, and God. As the New Year begins, we commit to making changes in ourselves after this time of self-ref lection. We are commanded to turn to those whom we have wronged f irst, acknowledging our sins and the pain we might have caused. At the same time, we must be will ing to forgive ? to let go of certain offenses and the feelings of resentment they provoked in us. On this journey, we are both seekers and givers of pardon. Only then can we turn to God and ask for forgiveness. As we read in the Yom Kippur liturgy, ?And for all these, God of forgiveness, forgive us, pardon us, and grant us atonement.?

In three separate passages in the Torah, the Jewish people are told, "the tenth day of the seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be a sacred occasion for you: You shall practice self-denial" (Leviticus 23:27). There are f ive categories

of physical needs from which we customarily abstain on Yom Kippur, of which fasting (not eating or drinking) is the most familiar. This self-denial enables us to put aside our physical desires to concentrate on our spiritual needs through prayer, repentance, and self-improvement.

SukkotSukkot, a Hebrew word meaning ?booths? or ?huts,? refers to the annual Jewish festival of giving thanks for a bountiful fall harvest and commemorates the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert after the giving of the Torah atop Mount Sinai.

Sukkot begins f ive days after Yom Kippur. It is observed for seven days by Israelis and many Reform Jews, and for eight days by other Jews living outside Israel. The eighth day of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, is traditionally a separate festival in its own right. In Reform congregations, which generally observe one day of holidays, rather than two, Shemini Atzeret is observed concurrently with Simchat Torah, the festival of ?rejoicing in the Torah.?

Like many societies, the ancient Hebrews had a variety of agricultural festivals. Sukkot l ikely has its roots in one of

these ceremonial expressions of thanks to God for a good crop. By biblical t imes, Sukkot had evolved into a celebration of the summer fruit harvest: ?At the end of the year, when you gather in your produce from the f ields? (Exodus 23:16).

Init ially, the holiday that became Sukkot had no f ixed date and was observed whenever the harvest had been completed, depending on climatic conditions. By Torah times, however, the Book of Leviticus (23:24) declared: ?On the f if teen day of the seventh month, there shall be a Feast of Tabernacles to God for seven days.? The date then was standardized.

Sukkot later became one of the three Jewish Pilgrimage Festivals (Shalosh R?galim). As on Passover and Shavuot, the people would bring a portion of their harvest?s f irst fruits to the Temple in Jerusalem. There, it would be offered as a sacrif ice to God by the High Priest. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 C.E., Sukkot became a synagogue and home celebration, marked by unique rituals and symbols. As was the case with other agricultural celebrations, the holiday also is invested with strong historical signif icance. Just as Passover is t ied to the Exodus from Egypt and Shavuot is associated with the giving of the Torah, Sukkot has come to ref lect the experience of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. The 40 years of wandering in the desert prior to entering the Land of Israel is captured, symbolically, in the frail sukkah.

The Book of Leviticus (23:42?43) portrays God as commanding: ?You shall dwell in booths for seven days? that your generations may know that I made the Children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt.? This passage is the biblical basis for building a sukkah.

There are two additional symbols associated with Sukkot that are historically based?the lulav and the etrog. Lulav is a Hebrew word meaning ?palm branch? and refers to a unique ceremonial object associated with Sukkot. Lulav also is a generic term that describes a three-sectioned holder with a single palm branch in the center, two willow branches on the left, and three myrtle branches on the right. Etrog is a Hebrew word meaning ?citron,? and refers to the special lemon-like fruit used together with the lulav in the Sukkot ritual.

As part of the biblical celebration of Sukkot, Leviticus 23:40 commands: ?On the f irst day, you shall take the fruit of a goodly tree [l iterally etrog], palm branches, myrtle boughs, and willows, and rejoice before

Adonai. With this passage, we know that the use of the lulav and etrog originated in biblical t imes. Over time, the combination of citron, palm, myrtle, and willow also became known as the arbaah minim (four species).

In Israel, Sukkot marks the beginning of the rainy season, which lasts until Passover. In Israel and among Jews in the Reform Movement, the holiday of Simchat Torah (rejoicing with the Torah) is celebrated on the eighth day after Sukkot begins and serves as a post-biblical festival created to honor the Torah.

Sh'mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah

As Sukkot comes to an end, we encounter additional special days in the Jewish calendar: Sh?mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

Sh?mini Atzeret, Hebrew for ?eighth-day convocation,? is the name given to the day after the seven days of Sukkot . Leviticus 23:36 proclaims: ?On the eighth day you shall observe a holy convocation.?

Sh?mini Atzeret was originally a time of ref lection on the holy days of Sukkot, which had just ended. Jews who left the booths they had occupied throughout Sukkot engaged in a f inal day of prayer before returning to their daily routine. Over time, Sh?mini Atzeret also became a day on which Jews recited a special prayer for rain in the year to come ? quite appropriate in view of Sukkot?s agricultural motif . This "eighth day" of Sukkot, Sh?mini Atzeret, is a separate occasion in its own right. While it shares some of the rituals of Sukkot, there are some dif ferences. Along with the new blessing for the rain being added, the lulav and etrog are no longer shaken in the sukkah, the blessing for dwelling in the sukkah is no longer said, and the Yizkor prayer is said at synagogue.

In Israel and in Reform congregations, which generally observe one day of holidays, rather than two, Sh?mini Atzeret is observed concurrently with Simchat Torah - which arrives directly after Sukkot - the festival of ?Rejoicing in the Torah."

Simchat Torah celebrates the end (and the beginning) of the annual Torah-reading cycle. Just as we reach the concluding section of Deuteronomy (the f if th book of the Torah) do we start over once again with Genesis (the f irst book of the Torah). This practice represents the cyclical nature of the relationship between the Jewish people and the reading of the Torah.

Only in the 11th century did the 9th day after the beginning of Sukkot take on both the name and the festive ritual of what we now recognize as Simchat Torah. An annual holiday of this nature implies a one-year cycle of Torah reading, but such was not always the case. In ancient Palestine, Jews followed a triennial, or three-year, cycle of Torah reading. The one-year cycle was a custom of the Babylonian Jewish community. It was not until the 8th century that the great majority of Jews adopted the annual system. Simchat Torah as an annual observance, then, emerged only after the divergence in customs over the Torah reading cycle was resolved.

Money in the Israel Scholarship Fund will be equally divided among all students traveling to Israel this summer on an approved youth Israel trip, not to exceed $1,000 per student.  Requests for scholarship money should be in writ ing to the Education Committee.  Contact Ellen Finkelstein, at 732-972-8624, or [email protected] for more information. We appreciate the congregation's generosity in considering the Edna Coleman Israel Scholarship Fund when making a donation to the temple.

SPECIAL SERVICES SPONSORSHIP Throughout the year, TRT hosts a variety of services with outside speakers or other unique aspects. Several of these events are planned for the coming year, but we need help from the congregation to make these events possible. We are seeking special service sponsors. For $360, you can sponsor our Eat, Pray, Learn service, Sacred Texting or Blessing of the Animals service, to name just a few examples. If you are interested in sponsoring a service or learning more about other sponsorship opportunities, please contact the temple off ice at 732-308-0055.

SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS WAITING TO JOIN TRT Did you know that most of our members joined because they knew someone who already belonged? Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertising we have. We are also happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call the temple off ice, at 732-308-0055, and give us the names; we will take it from there. And if they join (in any category other than Parent/Grandparent), and remain members for a minimum of six months, you get a month?s dues f ree! Think about what your belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpool...)

PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU When scheduling a life-cycle event in which you would like either Rabbi Weber or Rabbi Stern to participate (weddings, namings, funerals, unveilings, etc.), please call them first. If you set the time for such events without calling, it may be impossible for them to attend. Though a funeral overrides almost everything else, clearing the time in advance may save us from disrupting classes or programs already scheduled. We understand the stressful nature of such times in our lives, and with your help we can make them a litt le easier on everyone. If you have any questions about l ife-cycle events, please feel free to call Rabbi Weber, at 732-409-1268 or Rabbi Stern, at 732-580-2569.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.A.? WANT TO SEE A REFORM CONGREGATION IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? How do you f ind your larger Progressive/Reform/Liberal family when traveling outside of North America? The process is dif ferent than what you f ind in North America, where synagogues and Jewish institutions in North America generally have an "open-door" policy and regularly welcome visitors. The best way is to have the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) make the connection for you. There are two options available for your search. Several weeks in advance of your vacation, go to www.wupj.org/ f ind-a-community to search for WUPJ congregations. You will see a drop down for country and city, then you click on the search icon. If there is a community in that location, it will appear, with the synagogue's website and contact email. Email the contact directly. It is suggested that people include their full name, Temple Rodeph Torah, Marlboro, NJ. Provide your travel dates, planned accommodations, when you would like to visit the congregation, the number of people in your party, and a way to contact you once you are there.

There is also a new app, Find a Community, which will allow you to locate a congregation, get in contact with them about your trip and what you're looking for, and get directions when you get there. All of our aff il iated congregations are listed in the app, so you won't miss anything. Please note that some locations, including some major cities, do not contain congregations affiliated with the Progressive Jewish Movement. To download, go to www.wupj.org/app .
