Santa Clarita Cowboy FestivalThe Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival is thrilled to bring this world-class event to various locations, in the heart of Old Town Newhall, from April 19 to April 23, 2017. The 24th

annual event will continue to provide music, entertainment, food and shopping at William S. Hart Park for a weekend of Western festivities. Additional locations to catch new

and returning performers will be at the Canyon Theatre Guild, Repertory East Playhouse, William S. Hart Mansion and California Fiesta de Rancho Camulos.

Celebrating Santa Clarita’s Western Heritage

Santa Clarita is home to some of the most important historic sites in Southern California. The Cowboy Festival will allow patrons to enjoy the beautiful William S. Hart Park and Museum, the former home of the first cowboy movie star, which features an impressive collection of Native American artifacts and Western American art. Right next door, make sure to visit Heritage Junction, home of the historic Saugus Train Station. Santa Clarita historic sites make for a fascinating glimpse of the Old West.

The Old West with a Modern Twist

The lineup of new and returning Cowboy performers will be complementary to the additional musical genres coming to this year’s Cowboy Festival. The event will also be highlighting Bluegrass, Folk, Americana, Country and Alt Country at various venues in Old Town Newhall. Don Edwards and The Haunted WindchimesDate: Saturday, April 22 at 6:00 pmTicket: $30Grammy nominated, Don Edwards, is the finest purveyor of Western music these days. We’re honored to have him back at the Festival again and excited to see him share the stage with The Haunted Windchimes, whose sound draws from traditional folk and American roots music. The songs have a vintage quality, as if they might have been written yesterday or 75 years ago.

The Santa Clarita Valley is frequently seen on television and in motion pictures. But ironically, while many of these sites are familiar to viewers around the world, they are rarely seen up-close by the public. Imagine the excitement of actually visiting one of these ranches first hand!

Now is your chance on a visit to former Fox Ranch, where the remains of the 4077th MASH unit can still be found. Then it’s on to beautiful Paramount Ranch where over the past 90 years, literally hundreds of films, television episodes, commercials and music videos have been shot. This tour requires a moderately difficult 20-minute hike. Details to follow.

A Narrated Bus Tour of Historic Sites in the Santa Clarita ValleyDate: Sunday, April 23Location: Heritage Junction, William S. Hart Park Time: 9 am-4 pmTicket: $50 Includes lunch (vegetarian and vegan selections will be available). We will be walking short distances over uneven terrain. No children under six years of age. Some of the sites visited will include: Heritage Junction - home to restored, furnished historic homes, an adobe, chapel, schoolhouse, train depot and steam locomotive. An 1898 Trestle Bridge - replacement for one swept away by the St. Francis Dam floodwaters. Mentryville - site of the first commercially successful oil well in the west, and the longest continuously producing well in the world. Oak of the Golden Dream - first gold discovery in California. Site of the driving of the stake commemorating the joining of San Francisco with Los Angeles by rail.

The Writing: Students are encouraged to write about the life of the cowboy and cowgirl, the settlement of the West, life on the open range, or cowgirls and cowboys of the future. Poetry should rhyme or be in rhymed couplets. Poetry should tell a story in the historic oral narrative tradition.The Rules: One poem per student submitted with accompanying entry form. Poems must be one page only, legibly printed or typed and double-spaced. Categories for City of Santa Clarita student submissions are:

Grades 1 - 3 Grades 4 - 6 Grades 7 - 9 Grades 10 - 12

Postmark deadline is Friday, March 24, 2017. All 1st through 3rd place winners will be invited to recite their poetry on stage at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Entries become property of the City of Santa Clarita. (City of Santa Clarita employees and their families are ineligible.)
