John C. Maxwell, a renowned authority on the issue of leadership has written a book among many called "How Successful People Lead". It is from this writing that info-mation will be gleaned for this article.
How Leadership Works
The question is posed, how do people learn leadership. For most, it is believed
through trial and error. While some things come from experience, Mr. Maxwell
contends that the framework for how leadership works can be learned by
examining what he calls the five levels he has designed to define the five levels
of leadership. The levels as noted by Mr. Maxwell are:
Level 1 – Position
People follow you simply because they have to.
This level is of course the lowest of the five - the starting level. The only
influence a positional leader has is that which comes with the title. Positional
leadership is solely based on the assumed rights granted by the position and title.
Certainly there is nothing wrong with having a leadership position. On the other
hand, Maxwell stresses that everything is wrong with using position to get people
to follow you. Position is believed to be a very poor substitute for influence.
People who ultimately achieve level one status may be bosses, but they never
become leaders. People at this level have subordinates but not team members.
They cling to rules, regulations, policies, and organizational charts to control
people. Followers of people at this category will be confined to the boundaries
of their authority. Positional leaders most often have trouble working with young
people, volunteers, and highly educated folk. Why? Simple, positional leaders
have no influence. Position is the only level that requires no ability and effort to
achieve. Anyone can be appointed to a position.
Level 2 — Permission
People follow you because they want to.
Level 2 is founded strictly on relationships. When you like people and treat
them as individuals who have value, you start to have influence on them. You
develop trust and this produces a more positive environment. At this level, one is not focused on preserving a position. It’s getting to know people and
endeavoring to get along with them. Leaders find out who their people are.
Followers find out who their leaders are. You can like people without leading
them, but you cannot lead people well without liking them.
Level 3 – Production
People follow you because of what you have done for the organization.
One basic danger of Level 2 is that it tempts people to stop there. But good
leaders just don’t create good environments. They get things done! So Level 3
is important because it is based on results. On this level, leaders gain influence
and credibility, and people begin to follow them because of what they have
achieved. At this level, things get done, morale improves, profits go up, and
goals are achieved. This is where momentum shows up. Leading becomes fun on
this level. On Level 3, leaders become change agents. They can tackle big
problems and make the kind of decisions that make a difference.
Level 4 – People Development
People follow you because of what you have done for them.
Leaders move to greatness not because of their power but because of their
uncanny ability to empower others. They use their position, relationship and
productivity to invest in others and to develop them until the followers become
leaders. This is called reproduction. At this level, leaders reproduce themselves.
People developments results in champions. Two things always show up on Level
4. First, teamwork goes to a higher level and relationships and loyalties are
strengthened. Level 4 leaders changes the lives of the people they lead.
Level – 5 Pinnacle
People follow you because of who you are and what you represent.
This is the highest and most difficult area of leadership. People can learn to
climb to Levels 1-4. Level 5 requires not only effort, skill, and intentionality but
also an enormous amount of talent. Only naturally gifted leaders make it to this
level. Developing leaders to the point where they are able and willing to develop
other leaders is a challenging leadership task. Level 5 transcends all other levels.
At this level, a legacy is left, an organization is reaping excellence, and
opportunities are being created. It is my hope that here at New Shiloh that
mediocrity is neither a desired or pursued goal. We expect to go higher than
our beginning. Our effort is to invest in you so that you become able to invest
in others. The opportunity to seize is the one before us.

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Dr. Clinton L. Johnson, Sr. Pastor/Teacher
Pastor & Sis. Johnson’s 25th Appreciation Throughout the year a number of events were held to show appreciation for 25 years of service by Pastor and Sister Johnson. The celebration culminated on Sunday, September 29 at the 10 a.m. worship hour with Bishop William L. Sheals (pictured below) from Hopewell Baptist Church in Norcross, Georgia as the guest minister. Bishop Sheals holds theological degrees from Florida Memorial Seminary and International Bible Col-lege. Under Bishop Sheals' direction Hopewell has grown from a two-acre, one-building facility with 200 members to a thirty-acre campus called "The City of Hope," with a membership of nearly 17,000, including over 60 ministries and auxiliaries. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Inspired by God, Driven by Faith, Empowered by the Holy Spirit.” This year’s anniversary celebration was chaired by Sis. Annie Jones and Sis. Betti Chaney. (More coverage on page 13).

Live Love Laugh “When I Got To Heaven”
I was shocked, confused and bewildered
As I entered Heaven’s door Not by the beauty of it all
Nor by the lights or its décor
But it was the folks in Heaven That made me sputter and gasp
The liars, the thieves, the alcoholics The sinners, all whom I thought was trash
Uncle Bill, who I knew
Was rotting away in hell Was sitting on cloud nine Looking incredibly well
I nudged Jesus, “What’s the deal?
I’d love to hear your take How did all these sinner get here God must have made a mistake
And why is every one so quiet
So somber, please give me a clue Hush, my child he said, they’re all in shock
No one thought they’d ever see you ~Anonymous

Cornerstone Laying Ceremony By Iris Warner
The Cornerstone Laying Ceremony for our new edifice was held on Sunday, July 31 at 3:00 p.m. The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Jurisdiction of Alabama presided. The Reverend Edgar Baxter Morris of the First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama was the guest speaker. The ceremony was conducted by the Grandmaster of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge. The momentous occasion was greatly attended my many members, friends and other dignitaries. Below are snapshots taken during the ceremony. ...And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the
chief cornerstone.

On Sunday, November 24, 2013 during the 10:00 a.m. worship service New Shiloh Mis-sionary Baptist Church, one of the oldest churches built by Black-Americans in Mobile, Alabama will be celebrating 144 years. This year’s theme is “A Strong Church Walk-ing in Unison with God”, Ephesians 2:20-22. This year’s committee members in-clude: Brenda James, Chair, Donna Silas, Co-chair, Tan Montgomery, Kevin Kennell, Vilater Green, Enoch Bell and Carolyn Dinkins, Programs Coordinator.
As Shiloh celebrates 144 years of service to the community, program chair Brenda James states, “Shiloh has come a long way from the wooden church originally built on Dauphin Street near Tacon Street.” Sis. James said she recalls reading the history of Shiloh and is still amazed at the determina-tion of our Founding Fathers and Moth-ers”. Because a “colored church” could not be built within four miles of other denomina-tions, they tore down the wooden church, and moved, piece-by-piece to Crichton where the church later became the first public school in the Crichton community for “colored children.” Sis. James says “that for the founders to take on such as undertaking during those turbulent times truly showed their strength in walking in unison with God.”

The NSMBC Finance Committee Reports We want to thank the church family for the beautiful financial expressions of love for our Pastor and First Lady in celebrating their 25th year of service! We were able to wonderfully bless them. According to the scriptures, we must always bless our man of God and his family. And we did just that. Our re-designed website is complete and will be ready for viewing and use (virtual giving) by Sunday, October 6. We know you will be proud of the new design. Please take time to peruse the site for all the new features. Invite others to the site! It is awesome! The Committee will meet on Saturday, October 19 to finalize the budget for 2014 which will be presented to the church family for approval in January 2014. Meeting time and date will be an-nounced. The audit team, led by church auditor Sis. Sheria Mitchell, has presented the findings and recommendations from the 2012 inter-nal audit to the Committee and to Pastor Johnson for review. The team did an incredibly thorough job of reviewing financial transac-tions against our policies and procedures, financial reports and personnel documents. We are so fortunate to have a team that works to keep our records and transactions as IRS requires. The Committee wants to encourage the church family to continue to give… Give your tithes, building fund and special offerings. If you have not made up of your heart (not your mind) to give back to God, pray about it and know that many blessings will come to you because of your obedience. Paul wrote, "You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheer-fully." (2 Corinthians 9:7). We thank God for His direction of our hearts and minds as we handle the fiscal matters of the church. We thank the Pastor and our church family for your continued confidence in us.
All Glory to God, Sis. Betti Chaney, Church Treasurer

Breast Cancer Awareness
By Shamia Montgomery, Junior Writer
Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives.
Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any
other cancer except lung cancer. Experts are not sure what
causes this disease. It is hard to say why one person develops
the disease while another may not develop it. We know that
some risk factors can impact on a woman's likelihood of
developing breast cancer.
Risks that you can't change include age, genes, personal
factors, weight, hormone replacement, drinking alcohol and
many other contributing factors. The chance of getting breast
cancer rises as a woman gets older. There are two genes,
BRCA1 and BRCA2 that greatly increase the risk. Women who
have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish
to be tested.
Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast,
a change in size or shape in which a mammography can help
find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment
may consists of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemo-
therapy and hormone therapy. Men can have breast cancer
too but the number of cases is much smaller than women.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 232,340 female
breast cancers and 2,240 male breast cancers are reported
in the USA each year, as well as about 39,620 deaths cause
by the disease.
Battling cancer can take an emotional toll on everyone in-
volved from the person diagnosed to the family members and
friends. Inspiration can run short and comfort is in high de-
mand. Whether you are a survivor, a warrior fighting it, or a
caregiver hang in there. The only way to overcome the battle
is to hang in there and to trust God because with him we can
overcome any battle.

“Perseverance and Growth”, Those were the two words that Minister Patrick Watson and his wife of twenty-eight years, Felicia Watson, used to
describe their sixteen years as members of New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. In January 2014 Patrick and Felicia will be relocating to Hous-
ton, Texas where Patrick will be taking on a new job for Macro Environmental Services and Felicia looks forward to continuing her work as an
Activities Director for Senior Citizens.
Patrick and Felicia met as young children when Felicia moved from California back to Mobile, along with her family, to take care of a sick grand-
mother. Felicia said one of her most vivid memories of growing up with Patrick was when he used to “court” her by bringing her doughnuts.
Felicia recalled that he always made her feel special and remembers when he took her to meet his family.
Being friends is still the foundation on which their marriage is built. Felicia recalls painful memories of abuse as a child and stated, “no matter
what I went through, Pat was always my friend and was there to support me.” Felicia said, her faith and growth in Christ has allowed her to open
up with others and share her life. Felicia said “she is no longer bound by those demons.”
After graduating Patrick joined the Navy and he and Felicia had one son, Patrick Watson, Jr. who grew up here in Shiloh. Like most young couples Patrick and Felicia experi-
enced ups and downs in their search for a church home but recall the day they visited Shiloh. Felicia said it was “something about the teaching and preaching of Pastor John-
son that tugged at their spirit and now sixteen years later they still feel that Pastor Johnson is a wonderful teacher and preacher.” Felicia said, “she never understood the
word until she came to Shiloh and she loves coming to Bible Study where Pastor Johnson teaches us to understand and apply scripture.”
Once they decided to join Shiloh they became active in many ministries. They both sang in the choir and Patrick played the drums. It became a family affair when their son,
Pat, Jr. began playing the saxophone for the youth choir. Later Patrick was ordained by Pastor Johnson as Deacon and Felicia worked with the Deaconess Board, served as a
Greeter and is currently a member of the Mentors Ministry.
Patrick said that becoming a Minister changed his walk and through it all his favorite scripture, Proverbs 3:5-6 has been a source of comfort during times of trials, tempta-
tions and tribulations. Patrick says his hope for Shiloh is to “reach out to our youth more, we need to get our youth involved in more church activities.” To our men he says,
“Step up and be who God has called you to be.”
Felicia says one of her fondest memories of Pastor Johnson’s teaching is when he said, “If you can’t say anything else, just say Lord Have Mercy.” And Felicia says when trou-
bles come, she repeats that and then sings her favorite hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”
Deacon Michael James has connected them with family in Houston and a church that they have already visited and although they look forward to the move, Patrick and Felicia
both say “we will miss our church family, the closeness, the love and just looking around each Sunday and seeing familiar faces.”
Patrick says of his promotion and their move to Houston, “To God Be the Glory”, which also happens to be his favorite song. Their legacy to the Shiloh family, “A couple who
fought the good fight, have tried to be obedient to God and what He would have them to be, an example for their son and his family and hopefully one day to their grandkids.”
But most of all they Preserved and are continuing to Grow….To God Be the Glory!

The 25th Anniversary Celebration In February of 2013, we kicked off a year of celebration as we honored Pastor Clinton L. and First Lady Barbara G. Johnson for 25 years of dedicated and faithful service. The Pastoral Support Ministry chaired by Minister Katrina Adams was in charge of this year’s celebration, with Sisters Annie Jones and Betti Chaney as event chairs. Plans were put into motion for the White Linen Tea, the Taste of New Shiloh, and the 25th Year Appreciation Ball.
The Tea was well attended with female business owners displaying and selling their wares. We fellowshipped with ladies from other churches and the vendors realized a great response. The Taste of Shiloh proved to be a great success with Pastoral Support Ministry providing many delicious dishes.
Then came the big event before the celebration! The 25th Appreciation Ball was held on Friday, August 30, at the USA Mitchell Center. The attendees who were adorned in formal ball gowns and tuxedos enjoyed Rev. James Parrish as the master of ceremonies; comedians who were hilarious; and the great music provided by Figure 8 Productions.
The highlight of the ball was Pastor and Sis. Johnson being serenaded by Sis. Charity Garner-Wesley, who was backed up by Brothers Karl Johnson and Brandon Batten. The food was wonderful and the decorations was provided by Sis. Tosheria Edney, all of which contributed to the beautiful atmosphere of the evening. We had a ball...at the ball! Ken Holt Photography was on site to take event and individual photos. (The
memento book of the ball is available for $30.00. Please see Sis. Jones or Sis. Chaney if you wish to order).

What is an Iron Man?
An Iron Man is not just a name given to a member of the Men’s Ministry. It’s a
statement we make about the kind of men we strive to be. At New Shiloh, the
Iron Men’s purpose is to challenge our men to step up with purposeful strength
and courage to say “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” We support, train, encourage and motivate men to impact their families, friends, and
their community for the cause of Christ. We provide encouragement and
opportunities for men to grow and serve together; and to encourage a
commitment of involvement. On the 4th Thursday of every month the Iron Men
of the Church meet in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 pm. This is a time of devotion,
prayer, training for evangelistic outreach, and fellowship.

For Those Who Are Ailing and Grieving
“Praise God in All Things” The Bible teaches to be thankful in all things. When God is present joy, peace, love, gladness and pleasure is present. Nothing in this world can bind you in the pres-ence of God. Sing a song to yourself each day and watch your spirit surge to a higher level of wholeness for God will always show up in the right environment.
