Dear Friend,

When I compare the Bay of my youth to the Bay I see now, I am amazed at how far we’ve come.

San Francisco Bay is healthier today than it’s been in years. Porpoises have returned to the Bayafter more than 60 years, steelhead are spawning in the creek near my boyhood home andplastic trash in the Bay’s creeks is starting to decline. Much of the credit for this progressbelongs to Save The Bay’s amazing supporters, including the donors recognized in this 2011-2012 annual report.

Together, we have many successes to celebrate: Save The Bay’s strategy of working closely withcities and counties to enact strong bans on single-use plastics is making the Bay cleaner—youcan see the compelling trash reduction statistics we’ve gathered.

This year we opened a new restoration site that will bring us closer to our ambitious Baywetland habitat goal. We also launched three cutting-edge educational programs to nurture anew generation of Bay stewards.

And we have worked with local citizens to beat back Cargill’s destructive plan to build a new cityon Redwood City’s salt ponds, continuing the grassroots tradition of our founders.

Supporters like you have made all of these successes possible—and will sustain our work in thefuture. Together, in the coming years we will rid the Bay of trash once and for all, restore morewetlands for a healthier Bay and stop misguided schemes to develop the Bay that is soimportant to our quality of life and economy.

Massive Grassroots Pressure Halts CargillThe developer behind Cargill’s massive bay fill project, DMB, withdrew its proposal to build12,000 units of housing on 1,436 acres of restorable salt ponds in May 2011. This victory wasin response to massive grassroots pressure from our donors, Redwood City residents andother concerned citizens around the Bay. While this represents a huge milestone in the battleto ensure that this critical wildlife habitat is returned to the Bay, Cargill/DMB have vowed tocome back with a new proposal.

With your help, along with more than 150 elected officials, numerous environmentalorganizations, labor unions and community groups, Save The Bay will continue to fight forthis key piece of the Bay to ensure that it is protected and restored. Bay Area Kicks the Plastic Bag HabitNow more than 65% of Bay Area residents live in a community that has banned plasticbags, and Save The Bay is gaining ground on the pollution problem, thanks to you, oursupporters. Save The Bay’s strategy of working with Bay Area cities and counties to passbans on these most common forms of toxic trash is making the Bay cleaner:

• San Jose has reported a 69% decrease in plastic bags in San Jose creeks and 89%decrease in its trash catchment devices in a year since the City’s plastic bag ban wentinto effect

• Alameda County passed a comprehensive plastic bag ban after strong advocacy by SaveThe Bay prevented cities from opting out

• San Mateo County took the lead on a regional plastic bag ban that will eventuallycover the entire county, plus six cities in Santa Clara County

• San Francisco expanded its plastic bag ban to include all retailers and restaurants

• San Jose just became the largest U.S. city to ban Styrofoam foodware

Crucial Tidal Marsh Restoration Begins in Marin CountyCreekside Marsh is Save The Bay’s newest wetland habitat restoration site, a crucial strip of tidalmarsh located along Corte Madera Creek at Hal Brown Park. The marsh supports a breedingpopulation of the endangered California Clapper Rail, provides habitat for the endangered saltmarsh harvest mouse, sustains the migration of threatened Central California Coast Steelheadand protects nearby homes from flooding.

Save The Bay is proud to increase the number of acres of restored habitat by partneringwith Marin County Parks and Friends of Corte Madera Creek at our only Marin Countyrestoration site. Restoration Education Programs Are Turning Students into ScientistsWe are bringing middle and high school kids out to the marsh to perform hands-ontidal marsh restoration and engage in citizen science research on marsh conditionsthrough Save The Bay’s Community-based Restoration Programs for Schools.

Alongside our scientists and restoration experts, 1,731 Bay Area students spent a totalof 7,824 hours working in the marsh in 2011-2012:

• Planting 6,313 native seedlings along the Bay shoreline• Transplanting 7,488 native plants in our two native plant nurseries• Removing 6,512 invasive weeds from the shoreline• Picking up 220 pounds of trash before it reached the Bay
