Because you care about UMRC and the residents we serve, 2013 was a year of tremendous growth, from completion of Rivertown Neighborhood’s Assisted Living in Detroit and Huron Valley PACE® in Ypsilanti, to renovations at Dancey House and groundbreaking on our new Glazier Commons Assisted Living Center at our Chelsea campus. Your compassion, generosity, and commitment to our mission helps UMRC reach more seniors in more ways across southeast Michigan.

Mamie is one of those seniors. A 90-year-old with physical disabilities and limited mobility, she tells of her life in a run-down apartment in inner city Detroit. The last straw for Mamie was a fire in her building, caused by a suspected drug-making operation. “I just wanted to die,” says Mamie.

Because of you, Mamie has hope and a new home. In 2013, she moved into Rivertown Neighborhood, the city’s first and only affordable assisted living option for low-income elderly. This beautiful community gives Mamie the quality care with dignity she deserves.

Throughout UMRC’s history, friends like you have helped us provide the quality care you expect for your loved one. Today, philanthropy plays an increasingly vital role in helping us uphold the highest standards for excellence, innovation, and service as we care for an ever-growing and changing senior population.

Your gifts are bearing fruit now and helping us plant seeds for future growth, including Rivertown Senior Apartments; PACE® projects serving Jackson, Lenawee, Hillsdale, Eaton, Clinton, and Ingham Counties; increased benevolent care for residents who have outlived their resources; and more.

I am proud to join you as a donor to the UMRC Foundation. I give because of Mamie, and for seniors who still need our help. Thank you for making a difference in their lives.

John ThorhauerPresident & CEO, UMRC

More than 40 years ago, a husband and wife sat down with their attorney to draft their will. They both served the City of Detroit as teachers for more than 30 years and decided to name their church and United Methodist Retirement Communities in their estate plan.

They were not wealthy people, but they wanted to make a difference. Their wish was to assure that the UMRC Foundation would continue its benevolent care program, assuring that residents will always have a home where they are loved and treasured – even if they outlive their savings.

This couple passed away more than ten years ago, but their legacy endures. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting their daughter, Jean. She shared how pleased she was, after her mom and dad died, to learn about their substantial gift to the UMRC Foundation.

In preparing this year’s annual report, I find myself thinking about how one planned gift from two teachers will continue to support the UMRC Foundation for years to come. Every day, I have the sincere honor of seeing first-hand the benefits the Foundation makes in the lives of residents and their families, and I am proud to be part of this faith-based mission.

In 2013, I called my financial planner and, with one signature, changed my will to include the UMRC Foundation as a beneficiary. I doubt my gift will be as significant as the one Jean’s parents made, but I am confident it will help provide a safety net for our most fragile seniors.

I give because UMRC provides the highest quality, innovative care to ALL of our residents, regardless of their ability to pay. Thank you for your important role in making this possible.

Wesley Legacy Society – a lasting DiFFerence

UMRC Foundation hosted a dinner event in May, honoring our friends in the Wesley Legacy Society who have included the Foundation in their estate planning.

A will is an important way to ensure your assets benefit the people and causes you care about most. Often, an estate gift is the most meaningful gift an individual ever makes. Large or small, a bequest celebrates your philanthropic spirit while honoring the mission of your favorite charity.

We respect your privacy, and know your friends and family come first. That’s as it should be. But if there is a place in your will for the UMRC Foundation, and you would like to share this information with us, we would love to hear from you. By letting us know, we can acknowledge your thoughtfulness now and learn more about the lasting difference you want your bequest gift to make on the lives of tomorrow’s seniors.

We gratefully remember the following friends who generously remembered UMRC through an estate gift in 2013:

“I give because… I am happy here. I am so grateful that I have the financial ability to live here. And, I want to

share so that other people can have the same experience.” – Margaret Rink, CRC Resident 2

An Opportunity In BLOOM

T hanks to you, the UMRC Foundation has provided more than $13 million in benevolent care needs since 1998 to help ensure our

residents always have a nurturing home where they can bloom and thrive. The Foundation also supports growth opportunities for UMRC – from Towsley Village in 2000 to today’s magical Assisted Living (AL) Garden project.

The AL Garden is a focal point of our new Glazier Commons Assisted Living Center, scheduled to open in Fall 2014. Located in the outdoor courtyard area between Towsley Village and Glazier Commons, the AL Garden will provide a secure and serene oasis for residents, their families, and visitors of all ages. This gorgeous garden offers a host of activities and features to benefit the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual health of our residents and their families. This beautiful, barrier-free setting will delight and refresh the senses with walking paths, raised garden

beds, dozens of bird feeders, water features with ornamental fish, movie theatre, putting greens, and much more.

All proceeds from this year’s Garden Party event will benefit the new AL Garden. To find out how you can join us in bringing this spectacular garden to life, contact Wendy Brightman at 734-433-1000 ext. 2.
