LIFEBOAT JHR.J.W.H.RUTGERS VAN ROZENBURG TURNS 100

Last weekend it was celebrated that the 11.5 mtr long lifeboat Jhr.J.W.H. Rutgers van Rozenburg, at present the oldest engine powered lifeboat in the world turned 100 years, at the same time the completely restored latest manpowered (Rowing) 8.5 mtr long lifeboat Secretaris Schumacher was re-launched.



The Secretaris Schumacher seen in the port of Terschelling before the life boat parade This 2 events leaded to plan to celebrate this at the Dutch “ Wadden eiland ” TERSCHELLING at September 7th and 8th , Friday September 7th a symposium was held at the Maritime Institute WILLEM BARENTSZ with As subject how to save the Heritage lifeboats and how to preserve them for the future.

Thursday September 6th all kind of lifeboats, the most at present private owned or part of the collection of a Museum, started to arrive in the port of Terschelling, in total 29 lifeboats arrived in the port, an old pilot cutter, and an old British clamp fisher named PIONEER.



A lot of spectators visit the lifeboats during Saturday morning where the volunteer crews gave them the required information and showed them proudly the lifeboats

Saturday afternoon the whole fleet of lifeboats left the port for the Parade of Sail, which was hold off Terschelling in the Schuitengat, where the Doeksen salvage tug HOLLAND was anchored with onboard 60

guests including the major of Terschelling Jurrit Visser

After the line-up the lifeboats started with approaching the Holland , leaded by the hand powered rowing lifeboat SECRETARIS SCHUMACHER

With Jaap Roos on the helm, the boat was rowed by Jetse de Beer, Andre Lambrechts, Theo Kaspers, Hessel van der Kooij (The most famous singer of the Island of Terschelling) , Dirk Verhagen, Jeroen Stobbe, Laurens Konijn, Reinder van Urk , Daan van Zandwijk and last but not least Jan de

Hek.

Two of the rowers celebrated their birthday as can be seen at the photo above.



The second boat in the line was the Jhr.J.W.H. Rutgers van Rozenburg followed by the BARON VAN KATTENDIJKE

All lifeboats passed the guests onboard the Holland which was blowing the whistle during every pass.

The Terschelling life boat ARIE VISSER received an alarm and had to leave the port for a patient onboard a sailing vessel, the patient was transported to Harlingen, due to this situation the ARIE VISSER could not

participate in the parade.

After the parade of sail the lifeboats lined up for several photo shoots, above seen from the left to right the Jhr.J.W.H. Rutgers van Rozenburg, Neeltje Jacoba, Carlot, Christien and the Secretaris Schumacher.

Old and new together, on the left the NICOLAAS MARIUS and on the right the FRANS HOGEWIND, both lifeboats stationed at PAAL 8 at Terschelling in the past and at present.

The 3 large boats of the “SOUTH” seen lined up for the photo, from the left the DE ZEEMANSPOT ( when in service based in STELLENDAM) the JAVAZEE ( when in service based in BRESKENS ) and the KONINGIN JULIANA, which

was based during her lifeboat-life in HOEK VAN HOLLAND.
