Principally Speaking by Mr. David Dyb
I would like to extend an appreciation to everyone who has helped our middle school have a strong 1st term of the school year. With the positive changes we have implemented this year, communication has been at the forefront of our school improvement efforts. Thank you to the parents for taking the time to complete surveys and provide valuable feedback, both directly and indirectly, in support of our school district.
School Report Card
In October, the Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI) issued a School Report Card for every public school in Wisconsin. The intent of the report card was to provide parents with an understanding of how their child’s school is doing and where it can improve. The report cards were developed as part of a new statewide accountability system for schools. This system will continue to evolve in future years to include a new evaluation system for teachers and administrators. Each school earned an accountability index score from 0 to 100 based on the school’s performance in four priority areas: Student Achievement on state reading and math tests, Student Growth measured by year‐to‐year improvements in achievement, Closing Gaps in performance between specific student groups, and On‐track/Postsecondary Readiness including attendance, test participation, and performance. We are pleased to announce that Lodi Area Middle School earned a score of 76.9 on the State Report Card. This translates to “EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS” in the accountability ratings. This score also ranked our middle school among the highest in the area and in the top 10% of all middle schools in the state. In comparison, here are a few scores of local middle schools:
Lodi 76.9 Waunakee 74.3 Deforest 75.7
Sauk Prairie 76.2 Poynette 71.5 Portage 63.1
WI Heights 72.9 Columbus 70.1 WI Dells 69.1 Baraboo 72.5
* All of the Lodi School Report Cards are listed on the District Website
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS “DPI releases school report card and our school receives a 76.9 overall accountability score and
rating.”
Thank you to all who supported the magazine sale fundraiser for our
middle school
Magazine Sales Success
Another successful magazine fundraiser was conducted this fall. Students canvassed their neighborhoods, families and work places in support of middle school initiatives. The homeroom competition was close, but Mrs. Howe’s 6th grade group of students earned top honors followed closely by Mrs. Dean and then Mrs. Hook in 7th grade. Students who sold 5 or more magazines were treated to the Green/Gold party in the gym.

FFA Middle School Chapter Coat Drive
Students participating in FFA organized a coat drive to supply the Lodi High School Community closet. FFA member, Mai Ling Ness, offered the homeroom that collected the most coats one of the famous Chocolate Bomb desserts. A total of 91 coats were collected and the winning homeroom was Mrs. Brooks with 34. Following close behind were Mrs. Howe with 30, Mrs. Dean with 15, Mrs. Raschick with 7 and Ms. Torgerson with 6. Thanks to all families who contributed to this worthy cause.
8th Graders Acting Out
All 8th grade students traveled to American Players Theater on September 28 to see The Taming of the Shrew. This culminated an introduction to Shakespeare’s writing as well as the components of live, professional theatre. The following week one of the actors visited all classes to give an up close and personal lesson on professional acting. As you can see from the photo student participation was successful!
PoeTrees in Seventh Grade
Seventh grade students showed their creative flair during the poetry unit that recently ended. Students wrote eight different types of poems and displayed them in a final project of their choice. Whoever would have thought a simple door hinge could become a cover for a book of poems. The students will continue to write poetry throughout the year and the poems will be hung on our Poe‐Trees that grace our building. Please stop by to read these poems. We have some real talent in our school.

Tips for A Healthy Life
How to avoid and treat upper respiratory, sinus, cold bugs and gastrointestinal stomach flu:
Wash your hands. One of the best ways of not catching any virus or bacterial infection is to prevent it from entering your body.
Keep passage ways clear. Blow your nose, use Neti pots or saline nose sprays and use a decongestant as needed.
Cough into a tissue or your elbow. Take a good multi‐vitamin in addition to a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. A good pro‐biotic daily can keep the stomach and immune system in shape.
Decrease stress as well as plenty of rest. Sometimes that may have to be counting your blessings in a day while acknowledging the problems.
Flu shots only protect you from the viruses it was meant for.
If you do get sick, please limit exposure to others. Plenty of clear fluids or chicken broth/soup are helpful. Pedialyte products are helpful in hydration. Consult with your medical provider if symptoms continue past 48 hours.
Keep students home if temps are over 100 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea.
Have a safe and healthy fall and upcoming holiday season. Terry Haag, RN, District School Nurse

Art Students “Plow” Into Community Service
The Columbia County Highway Department contacted art teacher, Suzanne Sivertson, about painting one of their snowplows.
The students were excited to be a part of this project. Local department member, Jim Hellenbrand, suggested a patriotic theme. The students quickly got out their sketchbooks and designed the theme pictured here by incorporating the “L” logo and patriotic red and white stripes.
In the event of snow this winter, keep your eyes peeled for this colorful snowplow clearing our roads!

Book Club Information
For the past few years, the sixth grade teachers have offered the opportunity to join Sixth Grade Book Club to all who were interested. We have decided to offer this wonderful, family friendly extra‐curricular to the seventh graders, too. The letter was sent out for the 7th grade parents during conferences, and the sixth grade letter of interest will go out this week. Book Club was formed to bring parents and children ample opportunity to read and discuss books together. We have been especially lucky to have Mrs. D'Agostino organize and efficiently run our book club for a number of years. Recently, she was reassigned to Lodi Elementary School's 3rd grade, so we are hoping to continue her program by expanding to include 7th grade as well. We have already received sign‐up sheets and registration fees from a number of 7th grade parents, and we are now sending the same information home with the 6th grade students. Our hope is that we will be able to begin meeting in early December, meetings are held at 5:00 in the LMC at the middle school. We usually share treats/snacks and spend a little time chatting socially before the book discussion begins. If you have further questions or would be interested in joining the New Book Club, please feel free to contact Ms. Torgerson ([email protected]), or Mrs. Rouse ([email protected]) at the middle school.
Parent Conference News
We hope parents found the first round of conferences to be informative and useful. By allowing students to take an active lead in the fall conferences, they are building strong self advocacy skills in learning. I also want to invite parents to our upcoming “open” conferences on the evening of November 15th. Between 4:00 and 7:30 pm teachers will be available to meet with parents. We are asking parents to please limit any conference with an individual teacher to less than 10 minutes. This will allow for as many face‐to‐face meetings as possible. Parents are also reminded that if the scheduled times for conferences are not convenient, to please contact teachers to set up an alternative time. The first conferences do not have to be ‐ and indeed, shouldn’t be ‐ the only time during the school year that you talk to your child’s teachers. Trade phone numbers and email addresses while inquiring about the best time to contact one another. The next scheduled night of conferences has been changed from February 7th to February 4th. You may also wish to mark your calendars for March 7th.
RtI Update
Our largest initiative this year was the scheduling of a Responsive to Intervention (RtI) period at the beginning of the school day. After starting the year with an introduction to study and organizational skills, staff in the month of October worked to regroup students. During Parent‐Teacher Conferences, parents were provided with a Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test report showing their child’s results in math, reading, and language usage from our September tests. These results were used to help determine placement in groups based upon needs and at what percentile level students were performing at on national norm scales. Parents received an update letter with the name of the staff member their child is currently placed with. We had 1 Advanced Learners group of 16 students who studied the election in greater detail than regular classroom activities. In November, we will be forming an Advanced Writers Group based upon recommendations from Language Arts teachers and MAP test scores. Students in the Intensive groups will continue working on comprehension activities or math fundamentals while regular groups are continuing with study skills and literacy topics. In the winter months, we will begin planning for book talks with students having an opportunity to chose from a variety rooms that will have a novel study facilitated by a teacher. Forensics SignUps
Following the Thanksgiving Break, students will have the opportunity sign‐up for forensics. To be eligible, you must have passing grades, a signed Co‐Curricular Code and have paid the $25 Co‐Curricular Fee. If you have questions about forensics, please contact Sue Torgerson at [email protected].

Mock Election Success
Mr. Joe Jelinek, 8th grade Social Studies teacher, did an amazing job working with students to learn the election process. The school had many election posters to help students make their choice. Amazing debates were conducted that were on par with what you saw on television. The Secret Service did an admiral job protecting their candidates and then the mock election took place. A special thanks goes to Lori Schoeckert in the LMC, the staff, Mr. Dyb and all the students who voted.
