A Review of the 93rd Annual NYI B Y R I C H A R D H O P E

"it's truly an event that the club and the community should be tremendously proud of "

Our 93rd New Year’s Invitational golf tournament

ended Sunday, January 6th with Kyler Tate, a

University of Central Florida Senior, winning by 2

shots over Samson-Hunye Zheng, a Kissimee High

School Junior. Hayden Buc"ly, winner in 2417-18

did not defend as he graduated from the

University of Missouri and is now playing

professionally.

Mild weather prevailed for Thursday's opening

round. North Florida's Jordan Batchelor, UCF's

Daniel Robinson, and Alabama high school senior

William Wann shot 68's to tie for the first round

lead. The starting time was moved up on Friday

anticipating a cold front's arrival, FSU's Greyson

Porter shot 69 on Frieday to tie Zheng for the

second round lead at 139. It mar"ed Porter's

second straight year with at least a share of the

lead at that point. He struggled early and late on

Saturday, shooting a 78, and the third round lead

belonged to another high school junior, Gordan

Bri1i who shot a 68 for a 214 total, good for a 2

shot lead over Zheng. Earlier in the day, Kyler

Tate had ta"en the lead before running a foul of a

quadruple bogey 7 on our 17th hole.

Sunday remained cool and bree3y. Third round

leader Bri1i held his lead through 9 holes, but a

bogey at 9 narrowed that lead to one shotTwo

groups ahead of the leaders, Kyler Tate moved to

3 under par for the round and the tournament.

When Bri1i hit his tee shot on 12 en route to a

double bogey 6, Tate gained a one shot lead. His

bogey at 13 created a 3 way tie with Bri1i and

Zheng.

Apprised of his position as he played the 18th

hole, Tate hit his approach shot 2 feet from the

hole, good for a birdie3 and followed up with a

birdie on 16. On the hole that had been his

Saturday nemesis, Tate hit the green and

recorded a solid par, following up with a birdie on

18. Due to the tournament's shotgun format, Tate

still had to par number 1, which he accomplished

with a fine second shot and 2 putts from 24 feet.

In the meantime, Bri1i and Zheng, now pursuers,

recorded additional bogeys and then were

unable to ma"e the birdies needed to catch Tate.

Both were close to the hole on 17 but neither was

able to capitali3e and only Zheng remained with

a chance going to 18. He needed eagle to tie and

when his greenside bun"er shot missed the hole,

Zheng had to settle for second. Tate's 67 gave

him a four-round total of 283. Zheng followed

with 288, William Wann finished 3rd at 286 and

third round lead Bri1i and Porter rounded out the

players finishing under par with 287's.

A sizable crowd followed the championship

groups through the back nine on Sunday. Our

course's fine condition received many accolades

from participants. Ryan Franklin, our golf

superintendent, continues to do a great job for

us. Our head golf professional, Terry Decker and

his staff always do an amazing job as well to

make things run smoothly. We also appreciate

the time given by the women of the WA that

help with scoring daily, and the clubhouse staff

provided good food and friendly service for

players, friends, and families of the NYI. A special

thank you should also be given to this year's

tournament sponsors Visit St. Pete Clearwater,

Beach House Suites of the Don Cesar, SA

Pipeline Infrastructure, BLD Services, Yutzy Tree

Service, and All American Concrete. Links to their

Yoga and “Nine and Wine” will continue this month as well, and we have a fun new event on the 26th called “The Club Canvas.” A painting class will be lead by Tina Durbin with instruction, wine, cheese, and fruit in our ladies card room. Guys and girls are welcome! The fee will include all of your art materials, snacks, and you’ll be able to take your masterpiece home at the end of the evening. AROUND THE CLUB 11

Message from MembershipWe are looking forward to another great month at the Club! October is a transitional time as summer memberships wind down, and we begin to welcome back many of our members that travel back to Florida each season to enjoy golf and tennis during the warm winter months. For those of you that renew annually for our summer program, we thank you for choosing us as your club home and look forward to seeing you again in the spring. If you have any changes in your contact information, please let me know because I will send out correspondence very soon to outline options for year round membership as well if you would like to explore that opportunity. We would certainly love to have you with us all year long! Make sure to let your friends know that this is also a great time to try the club for the first time. Our newest age categories beginning at age 20 make it easier than ever to have a club membership!

Please mark your calendars for a really fun event on Sunday, October 14th. We will be hosting a “Member Golf Mixer” that will begin at 3pm with a 9-Hole Scramble. We will pair our newest members with those of you that have been enjoying the course for years! Make sure to stick around after play for appetizers, drinks, and music by Greg Billings at The Tiki. Many of you have been to Greg’s shows, but if you haven’t had a chance…this is a great

opportunity to see his amazing talent! This social is a great way to welcome many of our newest golf members to the club, hang out with old friends, and enjoy the afternoon! Make sure to reserve your spot by calling the golf shop at 864-1595.

Have you heard about “Nine and Wine” yet? The “Nine and Wine” Ladies Sundowners series gives interested members a chance to improve their golf games in a FUN and nurturing environment. Even if you haven’t played golf before, this is your chance to be introduced to the game. We had our first one this week, and I can tell you that we had the BEST time. This will run through the month of October on Thursday afternoons beginning at 4:30 pm. You can email directly at [email protected] to rsvp for the weekly event.
