MIKE HATCHARD’S JAZZ BREAKFAST

Traditionally in January, Mike plays a solo set, but this year he is joined by the man many regard as

the finest saxophonist ever to be born in the UK: Alan Barnes.

Alan has worked with just about everybody, picked up countless awards along the way and managed to infuse stunning virtuoso playing with a legendary sense of humour. So much so, that John Fordham, no less, commented in the Guardian that Barnes could easily be a comedian if jazz ever fails him.

Come along and start the new year off in style with this heady mix of consummate musicianship and banter. Pastries and cakes available to buy.

BASCO

Folk, jazz and classical music in one magical mess

Basco are a fiddle-scraping, box-belting, cittern-smacking folk/roots band with members from Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Basco really just want to tell you some stories. Their music is complex and varied, from hard-hitting, high-speed reels full of rosin dust and sweat, through sweet and melancholy tunes that tell of loves won and lost, through fitful fever-dreams of fractual complexity and fascinating texture, to songs that when you come down to it, are really just about sex. Ahem.

Basco’s material is nearly all original, stealing shamelessly and frivolously from Scandinavian, English, Celtic and American idioms to create a kind of organic, soupy stew - full of vitamins and antioxidants. Basco often join forces in Big Basco with three horn players, known for their work with Denmark’s Radio Bigband, World music phenomenon “Tummel” and the Odense Symphony Orchestra. Basco also perform together with big bands and brass groups.

RICK ESTRIN DownBeat says, “Rick Estrin sings and writes songs like the brightest wise guy in all of bluesland and blows harmonica as if he learned at the knee of Little Walter.”

Wildly fun, musically fearless and bursting with bravado, 2018’s Blues Music Award winning Band Of The Year Rick Estrin & the Nightcats have created one of the blues’ most instantly recognizable sounds and no-holds-barred styles. Rick Estrin & the Nightcats serve up sharp and incisive original blues and gritty roadhouse rock ‘n’ roll. With his wily and unforgettable original songs and his hipster, street-smart vocals, no one on the blues scene writes or sings like Rick Estrin. No one looks like him either, as Estrin is always dressed to the nines, sporting his trademark pencil-line moustache and pompadour haircut. Live, the band is simply unbeatable. They deliver a high-energy show capable of bringing any audience to its feet. According to Living Blues magazine, they play “captivating, powerful blues and roots rock with a wickedly cool and otherworldly twist on tradition…intelligently conceived and executed…hugely entertaining.”Tuesday 22nd January | 8pm | £22 seated/£17.50 standing

STEVE KNIGHTLEY

Roadworks

As a long-serving troubadour of the folk and acoustic music scene, master songwriter and storyteller Steve Knightley has spent much of his life on the road, collecting songs, stories, anecdotes and observations – with the odd disaster along the way. Steve once again takes to England’s highways and byways to present ‘Roadworks’ – a show which builds on the success of his sell-out 2018 solo tour ‘Songs and Stories’. This is a stripped-back, one-man show that’s infused with wit, warmth and alchemy, beautifully illustrated by his trenchant songs of history, love and conscience.

Steve says, “A life on the road certainly has its challenges, but I can’t say I’d do it differently if I had to start all over again. The format of the shows allows me to share the stories I’ve collected over the years, along with plenty of observations along the way.”

KNIGHT & SPIERS On a summer’s day in 2016, the organisers of FolkEast Festival masterminded one of the most intriguing and exciting collaborations on today’s folk scene.

Peter Knight, legendary violinist and ex-member of folk-rock band Steeleye Span was paired with leading melodeon player and ex-Bellowhead member, John Spiers, for a special one-off performance which left audiences in awe. With no space to be found in the marquee, people stood five deep in the pouring rain in order to witness the bringing together of two of the most genuinely gifted musicians in their respective fields.

With a standing ovation and roars for more, and much to the delight of folk fans everywhere, Knight and Spiers decided not to leave things there. The pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage, and the beautiful, mysterious tunes that can be found within it.

These uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN PRESENTS:

YOUNG PICASSO

Many films have dealt with Picasso’s later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? Being somewhat overlooked, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. Three cities play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. The film explores the influence of each on the artist, focusing on specific artworks from these early years. Looking carefully at two key early periods - the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period - the film takes us all the way to 1907 and the creation of a key painting in the history of art - Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which Picasso painted at 25 years old. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in those cities, the film explains how he rose to such great heights.Directed by Phil Grabsky Running time: 85 minsThursday 21st February | 7.30pm | £12

THE UNRAVELLING WILBURYS – A TRIBUTE TO THE TRAVELING WILBURYS AND THEIR ROCK-LEGEND MEMBERS “Captured the style and sounds perfectly and with their own added sense of humour gave the audience an evening to remember”

Just when they were about to make it to the big time, this band of good ol’ boys from Nashville, Tennessee had a whole bunch of songs (allegedly) stolen by Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, under the late 80s ‘supergroup’ pseudonym “The Traveling Wilburys”.

Things were so bad after that, the real Wilbury brothers (Walter, Sticky Willy, Thumper, Javelin and Blind Melon) resorted to dressing up as The Beatles and spent over 20 years touring as “Sgt Pepper’s Only Dart Board Band.” After a lengthy legal battle, a Hazzard County judge ruled the boys could git back their true identity and hit the highway with all their old songs including: “Handle With Care”; “The End Of The Line”; “The Devil’s Been Busy”; “Tweeter and The Monkey Man”, and by way of compensation, solo choice cuts: “Pretty Woman”; “You’ve Got It”; “Mr Blue Sky”; “Telephone Line”; “Mr Tambourine Man”; Lay Lady Lay; “Running Down A Dream”; “I Won’t Back Down”; What Is Life; “Here Comes The Sun”; “Runaway” and many other great songs.

LO’JO This angelic French tribe has been roving the world with its heterogeneous and eclectic musical luggage for 25 years already. Not a band, rather a caravan, a collective of incorrigible back-packers tightrope walkers /globe-trotters, open to every experience and every encounter. Through a dozen records, Lo’Jo’s gang, coming from punk, jazz, rock, and chanson, has explored as many musical lines as continents.

As Denis Péan, lead singer and songwriter, says, “Our music is an anarchic garden we try to cultivate so as to make it both beautiful and wild. We are like farmers: we play with time.”

There are six members: Denis the poet, who sings and plays the barrel organ or Indian harmonium, Nadia and Yamina, the singing sisters and whirling muses, Richard, the bow virtuoso, Alex the bass player and Baptiste, the drummer.

SHOREHAM PORT – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Local historian, Trevor Povey, will give a fascinating talk about the history of the Port from the early 20th century until the 1940s, focusing in particular on the part the Port played in the two World Wars: vital imports; ship building; D-day, and the legendary “Mystery Towers.” The talk will be illustrated with archive photos. Shoreham Port’s chief executive, Rodney Lunn, will provide an insight into the life of the Port, including the shipping trade; the origins and destinations of cargoes; and how the Port serves the region. He will also look at the Port’s energy generation, and his vision for the future with the imminent era of electric vessels and the prospect of coastal shipping taking pressure off the roads.

He will also discuss how will the Port will guard against the effects of climate change with rising sea levels and more severe storms causing major tidal surges.

MARI WILSON Mari Wilson first arrived on the scene in the early 1980s with her skyscraper beehive hairdo, bizarre sense of fashion and fully choreographed 12-piece band The Wilsations. Her live shows were spoken about as an event and were pure entertainment.

A mainstay of Top of the Pops (and an avid collector of Tupperware), Mari released six hit singles, the biggest being ‘Just What I Always Wanted’ and ‘Cry Me A River’, both taken from her classic album ‘Showpeople’.

Since then Mari has never stopped touring, writing and recording and in recent years has performed sell-out shows with her eight-piece, the New Wilsations and on stage with special guest, Marc Almond and on tour with Heaven 17. As befits a woman who has spent more than 38 years on the road, audiences are treated not only to a wonderful sound, but also her spontaneous wit and natural storytelling.

Mari’s critically acclaimed 2016 album Pop Deluxe, (her album of songs previously made famous by Dusty, Cilla, Petula and Sandie) continues to be a big part of her fabulous show, together with her well-known hits and a few surprises.

ANDREAS TOPHØJ AND RUNE BARSLUND

Danish duo Andreas Tophøj and Rune Barslund perform with violin, accordion and viola. The accomplished duo has its roots in Jutland, Denmark, and emerged from the folk scene formed around the Academy of Music in Odense, which until recently was named after composer and musician Carl Nielsen. Like the famous composer, the sound of the duo is closely linked to the Danish folk tradition, but the two young musicians also offer a new interpretation of Danish folk influenced by music from various countries and traditions. The duo draws on a wide range of inspiration gained from residing in Ireland and the US and from encounters with Celtic and Nordic musicians and musical cultures. Accordingly, the repertoire of the duo is based on a compelling musical melting pot and mainly features original compositions. The two musicians are also known from other bands such as ZAR, Kasír and Basco. Andreas and Rune are both very experienced musicians mastering a high musical and technical level as well as captivating ensemble playing. Their track, ‘The Danish Immigrant’ was awarded track of the year at the Danish Music Awards Folk in 2012.

SHYLOCK

“The tragic, funny and often unbelievable life of fiction’s most famous Jew.”

Is Shylock the Jewish moneylender from The Merchant of Venice a villain or victim?

Gareth Armstrong’s award-winning solo play confronts these Jewish stereotypes through the eyes of his only friend - and the only other Jewish man in the whole of

Shakespeare - Tubal. Promoted to centre stage from his minor role in The Merchant of Venice, he proves a born comic storyteller.

Celebrating the richness of Shakespeare’s language and conjuring up a whole cast of characters from Portia to Pontius Pilate, from Romeo to Max Reinhardt, and from Barabbas to Richard Burbage, this dazzling, moving, often hilarious play is a fascinating exploration of Shylock and his people.

Written and Directed by Gareth Armstrong. Performed by Rhodri Miles (Seilioc (Welsh language version of Shylock), Burton and Dylan Thomas: Clown in the Moon.

DANNY DORLING

RULE BRITANNIA: Brexit and the End of Empire

Can we blame Brexit on the legacy of the British Empire?

Is ours a nation as much at odds with its own history as with Europe? And is Brexit the cure for Britain’s unhealthy relationship with its past?

In this talk Danny Dorling looks at the impact of the long, drawn-out end of the British Empire on the Brexit vote….and asks whether the rupture could have a silver lining.

Dorling, who is Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford and a frequent commentator on TV and radio, argues that now is the hour to turn our attention to what really went so very wrong for Britain: accepting gross inequality.

An authoritative, insightful and entertaining look at our controversial past, the anxiety-filled present….and the possibility of a fairer future.

‘[Dorling} is that rare University professor: expert, politically engaged and able to explain simply why his subject (inequality) matters’ The Guardian

SARAH JANE MORRIS & ANTONIO FORCIONE Sarah Jane Morris and Antonio Forcione come together in a worldwide tour to promote the launch of their collaborative album: Compared to What.

The duo have each been compared to an impressive array of musical geniuses including Janis Joplin and Tom Waits (vocally) as well as Jimi Hendrix (instrumentally) – a comparison Antonio wears with pride. Django Reinhardt also comes to mind.

In truth, Sarah Jane and Antonio are great artists in their own right. Channelling their energies together, they share audiences in Italy, Britain, and all over the world. Together they increase their spheres of appreciation, giving loyal fans the chance to experience favourites afresh, as well as attracting new audiences with the strength and artistry of their unique partnership.

Compared to What is the result of a fruitful and varied song-writing collaboration. It covers many traumatic social issues and many songs of emotional intensity which reflect the urgent concern both artists feel for the tragedy of refugees.

Alongside the songs of conscience, Compared to What includes some wry comedy, love songs and some memorable covers, most notably from Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan.

HAZEL O’CONNOR – HALLELUJAH MOMENTS with Clare Hirst- sax/vox (Bellestars/Communards/Bowie) & Sarah Fisher keyboards/vox (Eurythmics)

“They were absolutely fantastic, bringing the entire audience roaring to its feet.” Telegraph

The first major female star of the 80s, award-winning singer-songwriter Hazel O’Connor rose to fame in 1980 starring in the film Breaking Glass. There were hits and eye-catching Top of The Pops appearances aplenty along the way. Hazel’s ageless songs include Eighth Day, Will You, Big Brother, Monsters in Disguise, Calls The Tune, If Only, Give Me An Inch, Blackman and Hanging Around - all of which seem even more relevant in our present times. Accompanied here by virtuoso saxophonist Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and vocals and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards and vocals, this powerful blend of voices and musicianship brings a classy touch of energy, passion and fire to Hazel’s vibrant performance. Unmissable.

THE KORGIS

The Korgis, featuring original frontman, James Warren are on tour in 2019

Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime’ was a massive worldwide hit, and ‘If

I Had You’ is often cited as a favourite love song of all time. Add to that the George Martin-produced album ‘The Man With the Bowler Hat’ by Stackridge, of which James was a founder member, and it becomes clear that the fanbase for The Korgis is huge.

James and the band have worked hard at creating a show that is both musically superb and visually stunning. Backing vocal group, ‘Born To Win’ bring a vibrant energy to the show, and James’ meticulous attention to musical detail has elicited comments such as ‘flawless musicianship’, and ‘breathtaking musicality’. The set has been designed to bring in fans from all of the eras. Going back to the very first Stackridge song ever released, through all the Korgis’ hits and favourites, the reformed Stackridge of the 2000s and the new material that is being compared to ‘Lennon at his finest’.

The shows to date have drawn standing ovations at every performance.

BLUE ROSE CODE “It doesn’t need categorisation, does it? It’s just great music, beautiful music, music to make you think, and to lose yourself in. All I know is, this album makes my heart swell. Filled with emotion and yearning and exploration of Scotland inside and out, it’s a splendid edifice. Here’s to its architect!” – Ian Rankin

A nomad both geographically and musically, Ross Wilson (Blue Rose Code) writes from the heart - eschewing any specific genre - and the 12 songs on The Water Of Leith, addressing themes of love, loss, travel, home, accepting the past and embracing the future, are painted with colours of soul, jazz, folk and pop. This eclecticism has become a hallmark of Blue Rose Code and has seen him compared to John Martyn, Van Morrison and Tom Waits.

Blue Rose Code has been featured on Loose Ends (BBC Radio 4) and the esteemed Quay Sessions (BBC Radio Scotland). He was nominated for Scots Singer Of The Year in the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2017. ‘The Water Of Leith,’ Blue Rose Code’s 4th studio album, has rightfully been praised to the rafters and was hailed by The Skinny magazine as its Scottish Album Of The Year 2017.

HANNAH SANDERS AND BEN SAVAGE

A chance meeting at their local Black Fen Folk Club in Cambridge uncovered Hannah and Ben’s shared musical passions and sympathies, that over time has developed into a unique and intimate show of American roots and English folk music.

Huddled round a single microphone, singing intimate duets with just mountain dulcimer, dobro and guitar, this is a folk duo that look and sound classically timeless, yet feel refreshingly unique. Fleetingly, they may evoke a memory of Gram and Emmylou, Shirley and Davey, or Gillian and David but their warm distilling of influences from both sides of the Atlantic produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own.

JOHN COGHLAN’S QUO John Coghlan’s Quo recreates an authentic 1970s Status Quo sound in keeping with his time with the rock legends; an era regarded as Quo’s “Classic” period.

John Coghlan joined Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in their newly-formed band ‘The Spectres’ in 1962. The group went through a series of name changes before becoming Status Quo in the late 60s when Rick Parfitt joined the line-up. In the years that followed, they released a string of chart-topping hits including:

*Pictures of Matchstick Men *Ice In the Sun *Down The Dustpipe *In My Chair *Paper Plane *Mean Girl *Caroline *Break The Rules *Down Down *Roll Over Lay Down *Rain *Mystery Song *Wild Side Of Life *Rocking All Over The World *Again And Again *Whatever You Want *Living On An Island *What You’re Proposing Since leaving Quo,

In 2013 and 2014, he rejoined the band to do two sell-out Status Quo Frantic Four Reunion Tours, reigniting the excitement of the early days. John Coghlan’s Quo was formed during the 90s and has enjoyed regular gigs all over the UK and Europe. The current line-up consists of John on drums, with Mick Hughes on guitar and vocals, Rick Chase on bass and vocals, and Rick Abbs on guitar and vocals.

THE DRYSTONES AND LAURA WARD

The Drystones are a young (just 21) lively folk duo from Priddy in Somerset playing violin, guitar and whistle, who have made a big splash since they formed in July 11. They have played festivals all over the West Country (including Larmer Tree, Sidmouth, Broadstairs, Purbeck and Folk East), and at their 2013 Glastonbury Festival performance they were highlighted by Steve Lamacq on Radio 2 as his “recommendation of the day”. According to Living Tradition “to describe their instrumental style as spirited and animated would be akin to asserting that Bellowhead can be quite an energetic band”!

FLOOK

“Iconic, ground-breaking, progressive and all-round brilliant” Lynette Fay, BBC Radio Ulster, January 2018

The flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, the guitar of Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John Joe Kelly weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes into the breath-taking sound of the ground-breaking band Flook. This group possesses a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination.

After the release of “Haven” in 2005, they went on to win the coveted award for Best Group at BBC Folk Awards 2006. Flook announced that they were taking a prolonged pause from live performance at the end of 2008, but, due to overwhelming popular demand, they’re now back – and with a new album due for release in early 2019, they are firing explosively on all four cylinders.
