4The Spanish Empire The Spanish Empire was the driving force behind the spread of the Spanish language. It grew strong through the new world, being the first country to be able to lay a claim to it. They conquered the local Indians and took their vast amounts of precious metals back to the empire and gave them their share of 1/5 of all treasures recovered. The funds were then divided up among the army, and their leader was often given governance of the lands he conquered. They later survived on several mining operations. They were the first empire since Rome, and the largest European empire.
