Infinitive:
Is the basic form of the verb
Verb infinitives don’t show who or what is doing the action
All Spanish infinitives end in either -ar, -er, -ir
All English infinitives start with the word “to”
Examples:
hablar – to speak
comer – to eat
vivir – to live
Conjugate:
Changing the verb infinitive to show who or what is doing the
action (by combining the verb with a subject or subject
pronoun)
The process for conjugating verbs in Spanish is as shown in the
verb “hablar” as follows:
hablar – to speak, to talk
1. Drop the –ar from the infinitive, hablar
2. Add the appropriate verb endings. For –ar verbs, these are:
-o -amos
-as -áis
-a -an
The full verb conjugation is as follows:
yo hablo (I speak) nosotros/as hablamos (we speak)
tú hablas (you speak) vosotros/as habláis (you speak)
él (he speaks) ellos (they speak – m.)
ella habla (she speaks) ellas hablan (they speak – f.)
Ud. (you speak) Uds. (you speak)
In the verb conjugation below,
note that él, ella and Ud. have
the same verb conjugation, as
do ellos, ellas and Uds.

comer – to eat:

are:

yo como (I eat) nosotros/as comemos (we eat)
tú comes (you eat) vosotros/as coméis (you eat)
él (he eats) ellos (they eat – m.)
ella come (she eats) ellas comen (they eat – f.)
Ud. (you eat) Uds. (you eat)
vivir – to live 1. Drop the –ir from the infinitive, vivir
2. Add the appropriate verb endings. For –ir verbs, these
are:
-o -imos
-es -ís
-e -en
The full verb conjugation is as follows:
yo vivo (I live) nosotros/as vivimos (we live)
tú vives (you live) vosotros/as vivís (you live)
él (he lives) ellos (they live – m.)
ella vive (she lives) ellas viven (they live – f.)
Ud. (you live) Uds. (you live)

the same verb conjugation, as
do ellos, ellas and Uds.
