• On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong left the Lunar Module Eagle and became the first human to set foot on the moon.

Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin

• Astronaut Edwin ("Buzz") Aldrin Jr. is coming down the ladder on the Lunar Module Eagle.

• This was the result of an intensive United States effort to accelerate the American space program.

Sputnik I

• In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the world’s first manmade artificial satellite.

• Weighing 184 pounds, it circled the earth every 90 minutes.

• Later in 1957, Sputnik II was launched carrying Laika, a dog which became the first Earth creature to orbit the earth.

Yuri Gagarin• In 1961, the first

human to pilot a spacecraft, Yuri Gagarin, was launched by the Soviet Union aboard Vostok I.
