Space Heating Units:

CONVECTORSConsist of a finned-tube heating element in a vertical enclosure designed to act as a chimney and provide air flow over the element.

Space Heating Units:

FAN-COIL HEATERA fan coil unit (FCU) is a simple device consisting of a heating or cooling coil and fan.

Page 3: Space Heating Units

Space Heating Units:

UNIT HEATER• Provides low cost source of

heat in which noise and air motion is not a concern.

• May utilize steam, water, electricity, oil or gas as heating source

Space Heating Units:

RADIANT HEATERA radiant floor heat system pumps hot water through tubes installed in the floor. These tubes “radiate” the heat from the water up through the floor

Central Air Systems:

SINGLE DUCT AIR HANDLING UNITProvides a supply of tempered and conditioned ventilating air.

Central Air Systems:SINGLE DUCT AIR HANDLING UNIT

Typical AHU components:1 - Supply duct2 - Fan compartment3 - Flexible connection4 - Heating and/or cooling coil5 - Filter compartment6 - Return and fresh air duct

Central Air Systems:DUAL DUCT AIR HANDLING UNIT

A dual duct unit simultaneously provides both cooling and heating air through parallel ducts to zone terminal devices which mix the air streams to suit zone requirements.

Central Air Systems:DAMPERS

To efficiently control air flow, dampers require regular maintenance. Incorrectly adjusted or loose damper linkages account for substantial energy loss resulting from air leakage and destabilizing effect on automatic controls.

Central Air Systems:AIR HEATING COILSNormally of finned-tube construction to offer the maximum possible heat exchange area to the air stream. Large coils are normally multiple tube type with inlet and outlet headers, while small coils may have a continuous serpentine tube.

Central Air Systems:AIR COOLING COILS• Available for use with chilled water and for direct refrigerant evaporation.

Types of air cooling coil:• Chilled water

coil• Direct

expansion coil

Page 13: Space Heating Units

Central Air Systems:FILTERS• Have the primary purpose of removing dust particle from air stream.

Common unit of measurement for dust particle size is the micrometer or “micron”

Page 14: Space Heating Units

Central Air Systems:HUMIDIFIERS• Inject water

vapor into the supply air stream to increase the relative humidity of the condition space.

Central Air Systems:AIR-TO-AIR HEAT EXCHANGERS• Includes heat pipes, rotating thermal element types (heat wheels),

plate types and fluid run-around loops.
