It is pretty hard to accept that summer is about over when we’re having this kind of heat isn’t it? Still and all, September is here and it is time to start taking care of season task in spite of what the thermometer is looking like. One little task you need to do this time of year that can make a huge difference to the health and vigor of your lawn for years to come. I consider this task to be THE most important aspect of lawn care and it is also the one that most folks blow off for some reason. I’m talking about performing some pH tests on your lawn. Checking your soil’s pH will let you know if you need to apply lime (pulverized limestone) to counteract acidity and it will also let you determine how much you need to apply. I think most people blow this important step off because it sounds complicated or “scientific” or perhaps they feel that they’ve done enough for the lawn once they’ve applied their grub control and fall lawn food. I’m here to tell you that, if you never check your soil’s pH and correct it, your lawn will eventually thin out, moss will start to take over and you’ll be off to buy moss killer and more and more lawn food to try to restore it. On the other hand, if you DO keep the soil’s acidity level near neutral, moss won’t take over and you’ll need less lawn food to have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood. Liming is inexpensive and is the “ounce of prevention” that can save you a lot of money and frustration over the years. Here’s the deal: Over time ALL soils gradually become acidic. Rotting grass clipping, leaves and other organic debris contributed to soil acidification. Even the lawn foods that you put on the lawn helps increase the soil’s acidity level over time. Acid rain has a hand in the process as well. Acidification happens more quickly in sandy soils than in clay based soils. Acidification of soil is a natural process and many plants actually prefer soil that’s slightly acidic. Unfortunately grass isn’t one of them. As the soil becomes more acidic, the bacteria and other microscopic organisms that dwell in the soil start to die off. These are the organisms you grass needs to convert naturally occurring nutrients (or nutrients that you apply in the form of lawn food) into forms that your lawn’s roots can absorb. Acidity also impedes osmosis or the ability of the lawn to absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil. If you’ve ignored soil pH for several years, you may have the impression that your favorite lawn food isn’t working as well as it used to. This is due to increased acidity of the soil. You’ll probably find that, if you correct the pH of the soil, you’ll not have to feed you lawn as often. But why, you may ask, is it so important to apply lime in the fall? Why not wait until spring? After you’ve applied the proper amount of lime, it will take at least two months for the lime to react with the soil. By applying lime in the fall, you’ll give it all winter to have a chance to react with the soil. You could wait and apply it in spring but you won’t get the benefit from your application until halfway through the growing season. If you’ve never applied lime to your lawn before, I’d recommend that you test and apply lime this fall and then test the soil again in spring to make sure you’ve gotten the correction you needed. Those of you who cleverly avoid raking fallen leaves in fall by mowing them into the lawn with a mulching mower should be aware that your lawn will become acidic more quickly. Regular pH testing and more frequent lime applications will be necessary to keep your lawn thick and healthy. Generally, once you’ve corrected the lawn’s pH, you shouldn’t need to apply lime for three to five years depending on your soil type. Considering how important, easy and inexpensive maintaining proper soil pH is, I’m amazed at how many people ignore it. Thanks for the read.

NOVENA NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. S.W.
DEAR HEART OF JESUS In the past I have asked for many favors, this time I ask you for this very special one. Take it Dear Jesus and place it within your bro-ken heart where your father will see it. Then in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise to publish it and your favor will be granted. S.W.

TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR LIGHTS(MS) — Perhaps no aspect of life has gone untouched by technology in the 21st century. Technology has changed the way we com-municate, how we watch television and listen to mu-sic and even how we keep abreast of the latest hap-penings in our communities and abroad.
Technology is also chang-ing the way we drive and, in many ways, making to-day’s highways more safe. While automotive gadgets like built-in WiFi or backup cameras may be the fi rst amenities to grab our atten-tion, new developments in lighting technology are en-hancing driver visibility and making it safer to hit the open road.
Many auto manufacturers still use standard incandes-cent bulbs in their vehicles. But advanced lighting that’s more befi tting of today’s technological standards can make it easier for drivers to see and be seen by fellow motorists. Vision LED Lights from leading automotive lighting manufacturer Phil-ips employ cutting edge LED technology to deliver better and more dynamic lighting for applications such as brake and taillights,
back up lights, side markers, fog lights, and license plate lights. Guaranteed for up to 12 years, Philips Vision LED Lights are highly resistant to extreme heat and vibration, meaning drivers are very likely to replace their vehicle long before they ever need to worry about replacing their LED lights.
The right lighting can vastly improve driver visibility and safety and prove a wise in-vestment for drivers who want to see the road better while making themselves more visible to other motor-ists. In addition to upgrad-ing their vehicles’ lighting, drivers can take the follow-ing steps to ensure they’re seeing the road ahead of them as clearly as possible.
• Get vision checkups. A standard ophthalmic exam is a series of tests conducted to check an individual’s vi-sion and the health of his or her eyes. The National In-stitutes of Health note that the frequency of such tests depends on an individual’s age, but drivers should know that they should get screened more frequently as they age, and the NIH notes that drivers who wear con-tact lenses need yearly eye exams. Drivers who suspect
their vision might be mak-ing it harder for them to see when behind the wheel should schedule an ophthal-mic exam immediately.
• Take steps to improve your reaction time and that of your fellow motorists. Per-sonal reaction time also can infl uence how drivers see the road and how quickly they react to potentially negative driving condi-tions. Making sure you get enough sleep and exercise can increase alertness and improve your reaction time. In addition, the choices you make when upgrading your vehicle can improve the re-action time of your fellow drivers. For example, Phil-ips Vision LEDs’ instant-on response make sure brake lights come on the mo-ment you apply the brake, instantly alerting other driv-ers should you be forced to make a sudden stop. That instant response time can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet, even at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour.
• Prioritize complete vehicle maintenance. No vehicle maintenance routine is com-plete unless it includes regu-lar cleaning of headlight lenses, sideview mirrors and interior glass and mirrors. Dirty mirrors and glass com-promises driver vision, so be sure to periodically remove any debris or fi lm buildup on such surfaces.
New Philips Vision LEDs (right) employ cutting edge LED technology to deliver brighter, more dynamic lighting than standard in-candescent bulbs (left).
SAFE SCHOOL CARPOOLINGStudents have a few diff er-ent options to get to and from school. In areas where school bus service is pro-vided, children have an easy way to get to class each day. But if no bus service is avail-able, students must be driv-en to school by their parents or neighbors.
Busy parents frequently ban together to form carpooling teams to ensure students get to school on time. Car-pooling is eco-friendly, con-venient and can foster stron-ger relationships between students and the parents of those students. Sharing rides also can be fun for kids and motivate them to get out the door so they can see their friends.
Safety should be a priority for carpoolers, and drivers can take the following steps
to ensure kids get to school safely.
• Know the laws regarding safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height.
• Each child will need to ride in a seat that is appropriate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all chil-dren comfortably and in the proper restraint, then you must reduce the number of passengers in your vehicle.
• Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13.
• Instruct children to remain in their seats until the car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seatbelts.
• Make sure students enter
and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side.
• Instruct passengers to keep their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If necessary, engage child locks on doors and windows.
• Do not leave a child alone at an empty home in the af-ternoon. Wait until you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away.
• Keep the radio low and minimize distractions while driving others.
Carpooling is a great way for parents to share the respon-sibility of getting kids to and from school.
