14 FOR THE WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVAL

GREENWICH - This year, the Whipple City Festival will once again feature living his-tory demonstrations in Dorr Park. On Saturday June 14th there will be four regiments reenacting four different pe-riods in history. The 2nd Con-tinental Artillery Regiment is a group of re-enactors from the Revolutionary War. Can-non will be on display as well as firearms from that period. Musket firings will take place at different times during the day and several campsites will be set for display with re-enactors in period dress. The 125th NY Regiment Associa-tion will be representing the Civil War period. This living history group represents a typical military campsite of 1861 and is chartered with the NYS Education Depart-ment. Tents and campsites will be set up. This group will have musket firings dur-ing the festival and wooden muskets will be available for children to help the re-en-actors do musket drills. The 99th Infantry Division will be representing World War II. A field table, 4-5 puptents, an ammo box as well as WWII weapons will be on display. This year we are also adding WWI to our group of reenac-tors. They will have a table with memorabilia from that era. Also in Dorr Park will be The Greenwich Town Histori-an and the Willard Mountain DAR and the Washington Co. Historical Society with infor-mation booths and items for sale. The park is still open to having other historical orga-nizations set up info booths. Contact the chamber at [email protected]. WHO’S AT RISK? CAREGIVE DISTRESS

SARATOGA COUNTY - Self-Assessment Tool Helps Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties -Area Families Avoid the Dangers of Caregiver Distress. Nearly one-third of adults liv-ing in Saratoga, Washington and Warren counties are family caregivers who could be at risk for heart disease, diabetes, depression and various other physical and emotional mala-dies as a result of caregiver distress, a potentially dangerous condition brought on by the pressures of caring for a senior loved one. In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care® office has launched a public awareness campaign – Family Caregiver Stress Relief at FamilyCare-giverStressRelief.com – to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. DID YOU KNOW? According to the 2013-14 PayScale Salary Survey, which examines salary data for full-time employees in the United States who possess only bachelor’s degrees but no higher degree, petroleum engineering is the most lucrative major with regard to salary potential. Petroleum engineers earned an average annual starting salary of $103,000, and those salaries ballooned to $160,000 by mid-career, when typical graduates in the study had 15 years of experience in their elds. Though engineering majors dominated the survey’s top 10, second place on the list went to actuarial mathemat-ics majors, whose average starting salaries of $58,700 were more modest than those of petroleum engineers. However, by mid-career actual mathematics majors closed much of that gap, with average salaries hovering at $120,000.

WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVAL

MUSIC LINE - UPGREENWICH - The Green-wich Chamber of Commerce announces the musical line-up for the 2014 Whipple City Festival occurring Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. Friday, June 13, 2014, following the conclusion of the parade, local musical group, Big Easy Revue, will take the stage at the gazebo at Mowry Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. Led by Greenwich resident Matt Edwards, Big Easy Revue (formerly known as Buck2Fifty) is a 5 piece band that brings a swing-ing, Calypso and soulful mix of music which sounds like it comes straight from the streets of New Orleans. On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the gazebo will be alive

with more musicians to entertain the crowds. Get Up Jack takes the stage at 1 p.m. playing Irish and contemporary music. Get Up Jack is a new musical adventure from former area favorite Hair of the Dog members, John Haggerty, Mike DeAngelis and Scott Apicelli, along with three other area musicians. If you enjoyed Hair of the Dog last year, you will love Get Up Jack this year! Stick around Saturday night and enjoy the country-bluegrass-rock sounds of Eastbound Je-sus beginning at 7 p.m. Greenwich native brothers Luke and Carl Anderson are joined by other talented musicians as they perform their own original songs that are sure to be crowd favorites.

FDR “FIRESIDE CHAT” AT CAMPFIRE PROGRAM

STILLWATER - On Saturday 14 June 2014 at 7:00 p.m., Sara-toga National Historical Park hosts actor Gary Stamm as he portrays President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a real “ reside chat” describing a 1939 royal visit from the King and Queen of Britain and the fascinating implications it had for our coun-try and the entire world. What do you serve to the King and Queen of Britain if they come to visit your home? In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt took them on a picnic in the scenic Hudson Valley and served the great American treat of hot dogs. “Mr. Stamm really brings Roosevelt to life,” notes park ranger Joe Craig. “Franklin Roosevelt played a vital role as Governor of New York and President of the United States, in preserving Saratoga Battle eld.” The event is presented by the Friends of Saratoga Battle eld, and is free of charge to the public at the Battle eld Visitor Center. GREAT CAR CARE TIPS FOR

SENIORS(StatePoint) Car repair and maintenance can put a strain on both a senior’s budget and back. With some smart and simple preventive care, you can reduce automotive troubles down the line.

Tread and Tire Pressure

The last thing any senior needs is a blown out tire while driving. Avoid this dan-gerous scenario by check-ing the tread on your tires and the air pressure once a month. Tires with little or no tread and that are show-ing threads are unsafe and should be replaced immedi-ately.  For the recommended air pressure for your tires, do not go by the numbers on the sidewall of the tires. Instead, refer to the owner’s manual or sticker on the driver’s side door. Not only does proper air pressure decrease the likelihood of a blow-out, but it increases your car’s gas mileage, and gives your vehicle better traction.

Change the Oil

The truth is that oil changes take time and money. However, if this task is not done rou-tinely, then the overall health of your engine can be jeopardized.

When using conventional oil, it’s recom-mended to change the oil every 3,000 miles. However you can save yourself some work and better protect your investment by us-ing high-quality synthetic motor oil instead. For example, Royal Purple HMX is specifi cally designed to minimize wear and tear and restore performance in engines with more

than 75,000 miles. Instead of the typical oil change once every 3,000 miles, synthetic oil can reduce the frequency to once every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or once every 12 months, depending on how much your ve-hicle is used.

Check Lights

Don’t be the one left in the dark. Regularly check your headlights, taillights, turning sig-nals and brake lights. Thousands of accidents a year are the direct result of failed lights. Check your lights by asking a trusted neigh-bor, friend or family member to walk around your car as you turn the headlights, taillights and turning signals off and on. Also, apply light pressure to the brake to make sure your brake lights are working as well. If a light is out, check the fuses. An easy do-it-yourself replacement can save you time and money.

GET A GRIP -- TIPS FOR

SAFER DRIVING ON WET ROADS (NewsUSA) - It’s that time of the year again -- time for wetter roads and, unfortu-nately, more accidents.

Russell Shepherd, a me-chanical engineer for Mi-chelin North America and self-proclaimed “tire nerd,” has certainly earned his in-formal title as evident by his 15 years of driving in al-most every type of weather condition imaginable. Most concerning for him -- wet weather.

“Most people don’t realize how much wet roads aff ect their driving,” says Shep-herd.

“When roads become wet, it takes longer to stop and more time to react, making it more important

than normal to pay attention to your car and other drivers.”

So, what can the average driver do? Shepard suggests get-ting to the bottom of things fi rst -- with the tires. Here are some tips:

* Check all tires regularly for tread wear and pressure. Chang-es in season and temperatures make it a good time to check both.

* Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, trac-tion can become negatively aff ected. It only takes a small amount of water to mix with oil and dust to create a slick surface.

* Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to handle wet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, can make a big diff erence. This tire has a unique rubber compound engi-neered to maximize traction, and two sets of grooves to help channel water away from the tires to maintain that traction. The second set of grooves is hidden when the tire is new, but emerges as the tire wears.

This distinctive design feature maintains the tire’s ability to

funnel water away, even when worn, which prolongs the life of the tire and enhances driver safety.

* Get in touch with your car. Take time to learn how your car responds on wet roads. Is the steering looser than normal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice the ABS (An-ti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tires could be losing their grip. Slow down and get your tires checked as soon as possible.

Fear of Seeds. I deal with a lot of beginning vegetable gardeners when I’m out at the garden centers. Among these well-meaning folks there seems to be a nearly universal fear of planting seeds. They’ll come to the garden center looking for corn or beans already started in a six pack. Six corn plants won’t provide much of a crop and an entire packet of corn seeds (enough to grow several small rows of corn) can be purchased for the same price as six plants. When I suggest this to the new gardener the response is usually “I never have luck with seeds” or “I can’t get into all that.”

I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all diffi cult about starting seeds directly in the garden...much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. First, go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’s Garden Center.

Let’s take a look at beans...according to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or any-time through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. These are bush beans so no support is necessary. The front of the pack is pretty but the back has complete growing instructions. This is pretty simple stuff honest!

Let’s go step by step. I’ve made a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bot-tom. Then I cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. I like to use potting soil to cover them since it looks different than the garden soil so I know I’m watering the right area. Now I just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. After a couple of weeks they’ll be all up and sprouted. I had to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” spacing the seed pack indicated I should have.

Let me illustrate “’thinning out” the crop using Mesclun Mix...those tasty greens we pay so much for at the market. Mesclun Mix is a blend of lettuce and other greens. As you can see the seeds are tiny. I followed the directions and planted them too close together knowing that I’d be back later to thin them out. They came up too close together so I need to pull some out. This is the part beginners have trouble with but, if you don’t thin them out, they will crowd each other and the crop won’t be as good. Sometimes less is more.

That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. All you need is a little patch of soil and the ability to read the back of a seed pack. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season with well timed plantings, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. Learn to read the information on the seed packs and trust the seeds. This is the way to really make your garden pay maximum dividends.

“It’s too late to plant a vegetable garden.” This is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July.

As our early crops of spinach, lettuce and others bolt in the summer’s heat, it is time to rip them out to open up space for the crop we sow in summer. Here’s a little list of “mid summer sowers” and you can refer to your Veg-etable Schedule for even more. It is easy to forget the garden in summer but this is your best opportunity to re-ally take advantage of summer heat to get fall crops up quickly for a large fall harvest. Many cool season greens that mature in September taste better than their spring counterparts so summer sowing is a huge opportunity. • Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties (generally bush types) until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. • Kale-Sow seeds through fi rst week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through fi rst week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks apart from mid July through September 1st. • • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds mid July to early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August.

Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out...you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.
