INFORMATION GUIDE FOR VOTERSSARATOGA CO. - The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County has pro-duced an information guide for voters for the School District Elections. Voters can access it by going to the League website, www.lwvsaratoga.org and either enter an address to see all the items on one’s personal bal-lot for the election or select from the list of School District elections. In addition, information is provided for each district such as hours the polls are open, whether absentee ballots are available, and if registration is required to vote. Most of the candidates in the county who are seeking election where there are contested positions agreed to participate in the On-line Guide this year, providing voters with biographical information, answers to questions posed by LWV Saratoga County. All of this informa-tion is part of the League of Women Voters of the US voter information website, www.vote411.org which is a valuable resource for all voters for all elections. Information can be found here on absentee voting, informa-tion about voting machines, military and overseas voting, assistance for voters with disabilities, voting hours, and ID needed for voting, as well as links to the NY State Board of Elections. SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY CENTER WELCOMES SARATOGA

SURRENDER SCULPTURESARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center’s 30th Anniversary celebration continues as it welcomes the “Saratoga Surren-der Sculpture,” a bronze bas-relief, on loan from The Friends of Saratoga Battlefield. This massive 4’ by 6’ bronze depicts the “turning point of America’s Revolutionary War,” when Brit-ish General Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American General Gates. The event was a pivotal moment in America’s quest for independence. This impressive new work of art was created by Chas Fagan, a nationally known painter and sculp-tor. The subject is based on artist John Trumbull’s famous oil painting called “The Surrender of John Burgoyne,” which is prominently housed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The “Sarato-ga Surrender Sculpture” is now on display in the City Center’s main lobby for the public to appreciate Monday through Fri-day from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Monday, May 19, 2014. The City Center is located at 522 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY. After a tour of various venues in Sarato-ga County, the artwork will be permanently placed in a new memorial park called the Saratoga Surrender Site, south of Schuylerville, NY. The City Center is pleased to have another occasion to welcome the community through its doors and continue the effort of “Bringing People Together.”

BIKE TO WORK DAY WORKPLACE CHALLENGE MAY 16, 2014

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) is spon-soring a workplace challenge (Twitter #B2W518) for employers in Albany, Rens-selaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Coun-

ties. Bike to Work Day is an annual event held each spring throughout the country that promotes bicycling as an option to commute to work. As Doug Haller from Bikeatoga ex-plained, “Riding a bike to work can be more than fun, it can be exercise and stress relief, it can save money and reduce your carbon footprint, it can reduce traffic congestion and parking problems. Some of us believe that the world would be a better place if more people traveled by bicycle. It takes a little planning, but most anyone can do it.” In each county, the winning team for each of four categories will win a trophy, with trophies contributed by Bikeatoga, Albany Bicycle Coali-tion, and Troy Bike Rescue and made out of used bicycle parts. The four categories are: • Organization with the largest number of riders, • Small organization with the highest per-cent participation (20 or fewer employees), • Large organiza-tion with the highest percent participation (over 20 employ-ees), and • Person who rode the farthest. Registration is open at www.capitalmoves.org. Standings will also be posted here by county, along with the total gallons of gas saved and calo-ries burned (to date 33 gallons and 35,376 calories).

BALLSTON SPA - The 45th annual GottaGetGon Folk Mu-sic Festival will be held Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2014, at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa. Sponsored by the Pickin’ and Singin’ Gatherin’, the Albany area’s participatory folk music organization, the GottaGet-Gon is a small, family-friendly festival that’s been called the best-kept little secret in the Capital Region. There are con-certs and workshops for those who like to listen and lots of campground jamming for those who enjoy making their own music. All events are under cover and happen rain or shine. The ride consists of a 100 mile scenic road course through the mountains of Rensselaer, Columbia, and Berkshire Counties to raise money for sports and social programs for children and adults with disabilities. GREENWICH - The festival begins on Friday June 13th with a 6:00 pm “A Day at the Beach” themed parade. It begins at the K Mart Plaza, travels along Main Street, to Hill Street and to Academy St. The evening continues with a bang to the sounds of the Big Easy Revue an area New Orleans Swing-Calypso-Soul group. Saturday starts bright and early with the running of the Whipple City 5K Race at 8:30. The day contin-ues with great food choices for lunch and dinner. An Artisan Market of local craftspeople in Mowry Park, a family area of bounce houses , a rock climbing wall and other children’s ac-tivities at the town & village municipal buildings on Academy St. There will be free horse & wagon rides through the village on Saturday. Along with a day full of live free entertainment by Get Up Jack, formerly of The Hair of The Dog from the Capital District in the afternoon and in the evening Green-wich’s own popular group East Bound Jesus with its special “Northern Rock” sound. CAN POOLS AND LAWNS COHABITATE PEACEFULLY? The backyard has become a go-to destination for warm weather recreation. As the “stayca-tion” has grown in popularity, more eff ort has been put forth in making the backyard a place where all members of the household can enjoy themselves. That means merging interests into one space. A pool may be competing for acreage along with a decorative patch of lawn. Some homeowners wonder if lawns and pools can be successful alongside each other.

Many question if chlorinated pool water poses any ill eff ects on the grass in the backyard. In addition to splash-out of water during fun times in the pool, water also will be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will fl ood the grass when it is necessary

to clean and “backwash” the fi lter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not.

Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlo-rine levels contained in regular tap water. You wouldn’t hesitate turning on the hose to water your lawn, so you shouldn’t be overly concerned about pool water splashing out of the pool, par-ticularly if you are stringent about maintaining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can withstand chlorine at high acid levels and is

pretty resilient about self-correcting. Furthermore, grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate the grass blades.

Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlorine will essentially be used up and pose no ad-ditional threat to the surrounding lawn.

Some people have actually said that watering your lawn with pool water can be an eco-friendly way of curbing water usage. Therefore, it may be safely used on lawns and most fl owering plants. It is unadvisable to water vegetable gardens with pool water because of any trace levels of other chemicals that may be found in the pool water.

Homeowners still concerned about exposing their lawns to pool water can create a buff er zone around the pool. Inground pools are traditionally bordered by concrete or patio blocks. Place stone or mulch around the perimeter of an above-ground pool to catch any splash-es and to create a barrier between the pool and the lawn. Also, direct backwashed water through a long tube and have it fl ow it to an area away from the lawn.

Pool owners who want to have vibrant grass likely don’t need to worry about chlorine dam-aging their lawns. In fact, the lawns may fl ourish with the extra watering.

In most cases, pool water will not damage lawns because the chlorine level is not high enough.

SMELLY FIREPLACE? After a long season of use, fi replaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and fl ue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fi replace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the fl ue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and fl ue are cleaned the bet-ter. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fi replace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

CARING FOR A FRESHLY SODDED LAWN Sod, sometimes called turf, can quickly turn a barren landscape into a rich, thick carpet of green. Homeowners hoping to revive their lawns commonly turn to sod as the quickest means to do just that. However, once the sod has been laid down, few homeowners may know how to keep it looking its best.

Sod is real grass that is grown on special farms. It is generally grown locally to avoid long transport times that could dry out the product. Sod is typically sold in squares or rolls of grass that come with the roots and soil already attached. There may be some sort of thin backing material on the sod to keep the grass blades together.

Many homeowners turn to sod when growing lawn from seed becomes problematic or too time-consuming. Seeds can be blown around in the wind or be eaten by birds and other animals before they have a chance to germinate.

Sodding a lawn is a major investment, costing as much as $1 per two-foot square. Depend-ing on the size of your lawn, this can be a costly job even before adding the cost of addi-tional supplies, such as soil, fertilizer and tilling equipment. Many homeowners who install sod want to ensure their investment lasts. Here are the main ways to care for and protect sod until it is fully established.* Once the sod has been laid down, the lawn should be thoroughly soaked with water. Most experts recommend soaking it to a depth of 6 inches.* It is important to establish a watering schedule to keep the sod moist. Water the sod to a depth of one inch every other day for the fi rst three weeks to enable the roots to securely establish themselves in the soil.* Water the sod every other day unless the weather has been very warm. After four weeks you can generally go up to fi ve days without watering as long as you transition slowly. The sod will change colors if it is not getting enough water. Never let the lawn turn yellow, otherwise you may have to cut out dead spots and re-sod.* Wait two to four weeks before mowing the sod. Keep the lawn height to around two inches to ensure that it won’t scald in the sun.* After two months of established sod growth, aerate the sod to keep the soil from being too compact and to enable oxygen and nutrients to get into the soil.* Keep children and pets off of the sod while it is establishing itself.* Fertilize the lawn every 50 to 60 days, beginning in March and ending in October.* Inspect the sod for pests, which may include insects or problems like fungi or weeds. Treat accordingly with products designed to remove pests.Using sod to establish a lush lawn is a fast, albeit more expensive option to sowing seeds. After a few weeks the lawn will be thick and secure.

However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for exam-ple. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the otto-man, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other out-door equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is anoth-er idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Many fl owers compete with one another to attract butter-fl ies, birds and bees for pollination, but at least two species of fl owering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched fl ower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract fl ies for pollination. The raffl esia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The raffl esia has no stems, leaves or true roots -- it’s basically one large fl ower.

THE BASICS OF CLEANING WINDOWS After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from finding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.* Vacuum windowsills and tracks first to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective.* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.* A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

OPTIONS Fencing serves many pur-poses. Some homeowners erect a fence for privacy, while others do so to con-tain pets and children. Be-cause fencing can be ex-pensive, some homeowners look for ways to cut costs, which can be relatively easy, especially for those home-owners willing to consider various materials when erecting their fence.Traditional fences are avail-able in materials ranging from wood to vinyl to metal. Homeowners have other options at their disposal if they prefer a more natural fence. Diff erent shrubs, trees or grasses can be planted to create a barrier between

properties or within the property.When choosing a fencing material, consider that even a less expensive material may prove more expensive in the long run if it needs signifi cant maintenance or has to be replaced in just a few years. Therefore, the most cost-eff ective fencing material may not necessarily be the least expensive one at the store. Here are some materials homeowners can consider.* Found material: Repurposed wood or metal can be crafted into a rustic, one-of-a-kind fence. Materials can be found that are no cost, requiring only the cost of labor. Should you build it yourself, this can be next to nothing. Sometimes existing fences on another property can be disassembled and re-built on your own property for little to no cost as well.* Chainlink/chainwire: Chainlink fencing is one of the most economical types of boundary fencing. The fencing comes in a variety of diamond sizes and is fi xed to galvanized pipes spaced across the perimeter of the property. Although it is some of the least expensive fenc-ing, it does not off er much privacy on its own. But if you are looking at fencing simply as a barrier, chainlink could be the way to go.* Picket fencing: A wooden picket fence is another inexpensive fencing material. Spacing the pickets widely apart may cut down on the number that need to be purchased, further keeping the cost down.* Bamboo: Bamboo is a rapidly growing grass that produces a hard wood-like material that is used in many building applications. Bamboo wood can be used to build a fence, but the natural plant also can be planted to form a living fence for privacy.* Stockade fencing: A stockade fence is one of the more ba-sic wood fencing options. Wooden slats are placed along-side one another to form an eff ective and aff ordable pri-vacy fence. Stockade fencing can be stained or painted to preserve it. Many home improvement retailers sell panels of stockade fencing so that you can make fence installation a do-it-yourself project.* Vinyl fencing: Although vinyl fencing is one of the more ex-pensive fencing materials at the outset (it costs about twice the price of a wood fence), it does pay for itself rather quickly thanks to minimal maintenance. Unlike some other materi-als, vinyl will not rot or discolor. You also won’t have to pur-chase stain, paint and expensive cleaners for a vinyl fence. I sometimes fi nd it amusing how our attitudes toward things change over time. I know we all look back at those pictures of us from the 70s, 60s and earlier and are amazed at the hairstyles and clothes we wore then. At the time, my generation thought we were the height of fashion with our big hair and bellbottoms. If you happen upon an old episode of Columbo on the tube, you’ll be amazed at how long men’s sideburns were. And then there were the bold, psychedelic patterns of the disco era. Now we simply look back at all this and wonder, “What were we thinking?”

I’m sure that a lot of this has to do with the fashion industry and its need to keep us mov-ing along from one trend to the next to ensure that we’re all in a constant state of desire to be “trendy” and all caught up on the latest fashions. Skirt lengths fl oat up and down, men’s ties get wider and narrower as do lapels. The older one gets, the less one cares about these subtle-ties of fashion. Of course, when this happens, there’s always the danger of getting stuck in a fashion time warp and ending up as a middle aged balding guy with a ponytail and a penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts. No, really, it can happen!

You might not realize it but the same thing happens with plants. Some plants are popular for awhile and then they are replaced with another. You can go on the internet and fi nd the “Perennial of the Year” and “Annual of the Year” for this and past years. Sometimes it is the color that makes the plant popular and sometimes it’s because the plant is a newly bred variety. Sometimes, just as in the fashion world, plants that were popular in the past enjoy a revival as new gardeners rediscover plants that their grandparents loved.

There’s one plant though, that has suffered a fall from grace so complete that few of us are even aware that it was once one of the most well thought of plants on the planet. The plant I’m referring to is the ubiquitous dandelion.

Like most of you, I loathe them in my lawn. I want my lawn to be green…not green and yellow or green and white. I’ll mow off the fl owers and mow off the seed pods and even threaten to kill them with weed killer. Like most of you, I’m not a big fan of dandelions. I have a vague recollection of tasting dandelion wine that some older relative used to make. I also recall not being too impressed. I know that they sell the leaves in the grocery stores now. That’s not something that I think we had back in the 70s. So, what’s up with these weeds?

It might surprise you to know that, at one time, there was NOT ONE dandelion growing on the entire continent of North America. Even knowing that, you’d probably assume that it was just an unfortunate accident that they’re here…they must have gotten here along with another plant or as a seed stuck to someone’s shoe.

Actually, the dandelion, that scourge of our lawns that we detest so much, was brought here by European colonists intentionally. In fact, more than one group of colonists brought it with them to their new homes in America. Germans are known to have brought it with them and Spanish colonists introduced dandelions into Mexico including what is now the Ameri-can southwest. The reason they made a point of bringing dandelion seed to the New World is because they depended on it to keep them healthy. The dandelion, which is actually a plant native to Asia, has a long history as a benefi cial and medicinal plant. In China, it is men-tioned in herbal texts as early as the 7th century. We can assume that it was used medicinally in China even earlier. In Wales, it is mentioned in the writing of physicians during the 1200s. A French physician gave us the name dandelion when he called them ‘dent de lion’ or ’teeth of the lion’ describing the ragged shape of the leaf. Other common names for the dandelion have been: Blowball, Cankerwort, Swine Snout, Wild Endive, Sin in the Grass and another French name, pis-en-lit which translates as “wets the bed”. This last name describes the dandelion’s ability as a diuretic. The Latin name for the dandelion is Taraxacum offi cinale which can be translated as ‘disorder remedy’.

Dandelion leaves are a wonderful source of vitamin A as well as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. Common knowledge of our ancestors was that the various parts of the dandelion can be used to treat urinary tract infections, abscesses, eczema, gout, boils, stom-ach aches and even snakebite. It has also been used to treat high blood pressure and as a liver purifi er. The white sap in the fl ower’s stem has even been suggested as a cure for warts. The list goes on and on. I’m certainly not suggesting that you use dandelions medicinally but it makes for interesting reading. One would think that, since there are references to the benefi t of dandelions about as far back in history as history goes, there might be something to all this. One thing is for sure, our ancestors were not going to the New World without the seeds of their favorite cure. It is no wonder that they are everywhere. We may have completely lost sight of the virtues of the lowly dandelion but they are still with us nonetheless.

I’ll have to admit that tender young dandelion greens sometimes make it into the salads at my house. They are a little bitter but, when mixed with all the other greens, they’re pretty good. For some, it is an acquired taste. We once served some dinner guests salad with dan-delion greens in it without their knowledge. They enjoyed the salad but called the next day to ask us, “What was in that salad anyway?” I won’t go into detail. Suffi ce it to say, THEY noticed the effect dandelions can have on the digestive system! Thanks for the read.

(NewsUSA) - It’s that time of the year again -- time for wetter roads and, unfortu-nately, more accidents.

Russell Shepherd, a mechan-ical engineer for Michelin North America and self-pro-claimed “tire nerd,” has cer-tainly earned his informal ti-tle as evident by his 15 years of driving in almost every type of weather condition imaginable. Most concern-ing for him -- wet weather.

“Most people don’t realize how much wet roads aff ect their driving,” says Shepherd.

“When roads become wet, it takes longer to stop and more time to react, making it more important

than normal to pay atten-tion to your car and other drivers.”

So, what can the average driver do? Shepard suggests getting to the bottom of things fi rst -- with the tires. Here are some tips:

* Check all tires regularly for tread wear and pressure. Changes in season and temperatures make it a good time to check both.

* Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, traction can become negatively af-fected. It only takes a small amount of water to mix with oil and dust to create a slick surface.

* Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to handle wet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, can make a big diff erence. This tire has a unique rubber compound engi-neered to maximize traction, and two sets of grooves to help channel water away from the tires to maintain that traction. The second set of grooves is hidden when the tire is new, but emerges as the tire wears.

This distinctive design feature maintains the tire’s ability to funnel water away, even when worn, which prolongs the life of the tire and enhances driver safety.

* Get in touch with your car. Take time to learn how your car responds on wet roads. Is the steering looser than normal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tires could be los-ing their grip. Slow down and get your tires checked as soon as possible.
