Dear Readers,Welcome to the April issue and a big hello from your new Editor! I’m delighted to tell you that Red Fox Publishing has now acquired the SP4 Magazine. We have been publishing a sister magazine called The Downton Directory which covers the SP5 area south of Salisbury for 2 years now and are looking forward to building on the success of these highly popular and indispensable community magazines.

The SP4 Magazine is your perfect handbook and ideal to keep by the phone for when you urgently need a plumber, taxi, vet or other service. My favourite motto is “use it or lose it” and this is so true in the current economic climate. By continuing to support our local businesses we can help to ensure that they are still around in years to come.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any suggestions or articles. Even if it’s just to say hello, we’d love to hear from you!

I hope you have a fantastic Easter and don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 3rd April!

Until next month...

Budding rockstars are getting the chance to develop their skills in weekly music lessons at the Bowman Centre in Amesbury!

Students (from age 7 to 17) not only learn to play guitar, drums, bass or keyboard but they also get the chance to play rock and pop songs from across the decades in each and every lesson.

Sharon McCarthy, School Manager, said ‘The unique and simple Easylearn system gets the students involved right from the start and really lets them play the songs that they want to play in a rock band environment from lesson one ... traditional one-to-one lessons don’t give you that opportunity and this method really makes sure that their initial enthusiasm is encouraged straightaway’.

The music school offers everyone the chance to learn and play songs from the likes of Green Day, Muse, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Nirvana, and then play

them with a band rather than be stuck in their bedroom trying to work out how to play via a book or the internet ... the kids love it! It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or advanced – there is something for everyone.

Since opening a year ago in Amesbury, the school has put on 2 amazing Live Gigs and also raised a wonderful amount of money for The Stars Appeal. The gigs which run twice a year are a great chance for the kids to show off their skills to friends and family whilst raising money too.

Discounts are available for the fi rst month, just mention the SP4 Magazine when booking!

For a FREE taster session at the Bowman Centre in Amesbury contact Sharon on 01256 465815 or online www.clivesmusic.com.

Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) would like to thank

Salisbury’s shoppers for their generosity at last month’s street collection. Four-legged ex-racers raised a total of £180.35. GRWE press offi cer Stuart Parslow said the charity was deeply grateful for the contributions.“It proves again that we are a nation of animal lovers – and also how engaging GRWE dogs are. It’s a fantastic total considering we live in such diffi cult times, the people of Salisbury have been so generous.”

The money collected will go towards rehabilitating unwanted ex-racing dogs, as well as rescuing lurchers and greyhounds found straying or handed in to pounds. “GRWE is staffed completely by volunteers, which means the money goes straight into caring for the dogs.” Stuart explained.

Volunteers and their dogs will be out-and-about again this month. On Saturday 23rd April they will be at the Tesco Store, Southampton Road, Salisbury and on Saturday 30th April they will be at the Downton Cuckoo Fair where greyhound goodies will be available to buy at the stand so please stop by to say hello and browse.

If you would like to fi nd out more about retired greyhounds, please visit the website www.grwe.com or call 07000 785 092.

April Fool’s day: a time for practical jokesand having a laugh at the expense of others. Luckily, there’s no need with our top ten humorous books - great for giving and guaranteed to tickle the funny bone (no itching powder or whoopee cushions required).

Simon’s Cat by Simon TofieldFor anyone who has a cat, Simon Tofi eld’s animations, based upon a mischievous cat’s antics pre-meal time, are hugely funny. From screen to page, nothing is lost in this collection of comic strip drawings, which will have feline fans everywhere grinning from ear to ear.

F In ExamsThe Best Test Paper Blunders by Richard BensonThe clock is ticking and you haven’t got a clue what the right answer is. Either that, or you fancy blagging an A* with your hilarious wit. Here is a collection of wrong (but very amusing) answers taken from test papers on a number of subjects.

1000 Unforgettable Senior Moments by Tom FriedmanDon’t be put off by the fact that the author only managed to remember 246, you still get value for money with this hilarious collection of anecdotes, from when Jimmy Carter left the codes he needed to launch a nuclear missile strike in his suit jacket pocket (at the dry cleaners) to the time Emerson forgot Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s name (at Longfellow’s funeral). It’s nice to know you’re not the only one, isn’t it?

The Life of Fly by Magnus MuhrYou may think that the life of a fl y must be fairly dull, buzzing around and getting swatted all the time, but Swedish photographer Magnus Muhr has shown the world

otherwise. This collection captures what they really get up to: from sunbathing and sports to performing their own version of Riverdance.

The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy RileyIt’s a hard life being a rabbit, and the long, dark days result in a great many taking their own lives. Always keen to come up with a more memorable way to end it all than their hundreds of siblings, here we see the methods favoured by the likes of Flopsy and Peter. Have tissues at the ready.

A Simples LifeThe Life and Times of Alexandr Orlov by Aleksandr OrlovHerein lies the history of the nation’s favourite meerkat. From escaping the Kalahari desert and enduring a war with Mongis Khan, we learn of how Aleksandr and his family made their name by fi nding ‘cheep insuranz deels’ for the people of Great Britain. Fully illustrated and hugely entertaining for any Compare the Meerkat fan.

The Tommy Cooper Joke Book compiled by John FisherCrammed full of tricks, one-liners, jokes and wit from the great comic, this book is a delightful and fun collection. Recounting the time Tommy’s friend drowned in a bowl of muesli (due to a particularly strong currant) and culinary advice such as how to prevent rice from sticking (cook each grain separately), this title is sure to have its readers in stitches.

NEW RELEASE 101 Things to Do Before You’re Five by Sally NortonOut now in paperback, this hilarious book captures all those disgusting and awful things we do when we’re small. A great gift for new parents, and indeed anyone who was ever young and stupid enough to share the dog’s dinner.

April is all set to be another busy month – both in Westminster and in the constituency, with my House of Commons Defence Select Committee duties again due to take me out of the country early in the month. It is part of the privilege of carrying out Parliamentary and constituency duties that one suddenly becomes in great demand and engagements are impossible to confi ne to daylight hours – as my recent night out with Salisbury Street Pastors and my participation in Alabare’s sleep-out amply demonstrated! As a result, I am looking forward to taking the opportunity to spend a couple of days of quiet time with my family over Easter.I recently took the opportunity to press for an update on one of the most important issues facing the constituency – the possible relocation of the Health Protection Agency away from Porton Down.During business questions in the House, I asked the Leader of the House Sir George Young to make a public statement on how the government’s thinking has moved on in the last six months.Since October 12th, when the Minister visited Porton with me and indicated a decision by the end of last year was likely, we have heard nothing and I think it is important to keep the pressure up.As MP for our neighbouring constituency of North West Hampshire, Sir George knows the issues associated with the future of the HPA well and assured me that a decision will be reached as soon as possible. My advice surgeries, which take place most weeks, continue to be well subscribed. Being available to my constituents is very important to me. Unfortunately, there is never time enough to accept every one of the dozens of kind invitations I receive each week – much as I might like to.But, when constituents come to me needing to discuss the problems that face them in their individual lives, I make it a point never to be ‘too busy’.I am holding a bumper pre-Easter surgery this month and my offi ce is always happy to make arrangements for me to visit constituents in their homes or contact them by telephone to discuss pressing matters of concern.I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a peaceful and joyful Easter.

John Glen MP will be holding surgeries on the

What do Apple, Google, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony and LG have in common? They – along with seemingly every other electronics fi rm on the planet – would like to connect your TV to the Internet.

So why on Earth would you want such a thing? The short answer is choice: depending on the system you choose, you can access video on demand from every broadcaster you can think of, rent videos, watch YouTube or catch up with people on Facebook from the comfort of your sofa.

There are three main kinds of connected TV kit:There are connected TVs, such as Sony’s Bravias, Panasonic’s connected Viera sets, Samsung’s Internet@TV and LG’s SmartTVs. There are set-top boxes such as Apple’s Apple TV, Internet-enabled Blu-Ray players and Google TV devices such as the Logitech Revue. And then there are games consoles: Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. Of the three options the consoles are the most limited: they’re designed for gaming fi rst and foremost, so any TV-related features are pretty basic. In the case of the Wii you get access to BBC’s iPlayer, and that’s about it.

TVs and set-top boxes are much more interesting, but there are big differences between different fi rms’ offerings. Apple TV does YouTube and iTunes movie rentals but not services such as iPlayer or LoveFilm; Microsoft’s Xbox 360 offers Sky (if you’re a Sky subscriber) but doesn’t offer iPlayer

or YouTube; top-end Samsung TVs offer not just Facebook but video chat using Skype; Google TV devices offer CNN and all the major UK catch-up services such as 4oD and ITV Player, not to mention regional variations including uTV’s uPlayer. There are also important differences in the way TVs and set-top boxes handle your existing media, such as home movies. Sony equipment, Windows PCs and other devices can communicate via the DLNA standard (Digital Living Network Alliance,

a standard for transferring media between different bits of kit), but the Apple TV can only access your content if it’s on a PC or Mac running iTunes. If you don’t fancy

leaving your computer running all the time, then the Apple TV isn’t for you.

If that sounds enormously complicated, that’s because it is: we’re in the very early stages of connected TV, and as a result there are lots of competing visions of the future. You’d need to be pretty brave to drop £1,000-plus on an Internet-enabled TV when it’s not entirely clear which technology will triumph. That doesn’t mean you can’t join in the fun now, though: set-top boxes and connected Blu-Ray players give you the fun of connected TV without the expense of a whole new set. An Apple TV is £99, Logitech’s Google TV-powered Revue should cost around £200 and an Internet-friendly Blu-Ray player such as Samsung’s BD-C6900 is around £250 online. If you buy one of those and Internet TV t u r n s out to be a passing fad, at least you’ll still have a top-end player for your Blu-Ray discs.

Dogs Trust Salisbury Rehoming Centre, at Newton Tony, is desperately short of tinned dog food and is appealing locally for help. ‘We’re okay for dry dog food, but our dogs really love having some meat with their meals, so any donations of tinned dog food would be most gratefully accepted at our rehoming centre at Newton Tony,’ said Alison Rodger, manager of Dogs Trust Salisbury. Donations can be brought to the rehoming centre

on the A338 at any time during opening hours, which are every day except Wednesday, from 12 till 4. For more information, please ring Dogs Trust Salisbury on 01980 629634.
