Description:
the program configuration is formed in a pivoting order, unwinding to lower levels. the most public spaces; gallery and studio are placed in the highest elevations and the most private; studio and living areas are places at lowest level closer to the enclosed/private area of the hill. all pivoting spaces lead to a central spine of circulation. from these spaces, there is opportunity to view and experience landscape from diference vantage points. Gradients of structural and louvers systems emgerge to depict light in an aggregate order.

Description:
the design is made up of two mechanisms, one in where the pieces are short, and dense. the other are more open and are longer, and thinner pieces make up the structure. together, the two fliter light in an scattered, aggregate and gradational order. Like antony Gromley’s could Xi, the human figure is illustrated a gradation using perpendicular “t” elements. with this tectonic system, the organization had to seem like an organized mess. walking through this tectonic canopy, the center of the square is void and a square ring gradates from the center, out. the darkest part of the canopy, is where it imprint onto the ground excavating to a deeper level.

Description:
the won buddhist center is a retreat in rural upstate New york, for spiritual reflection and discussion. the property gently slopes toward the west, offering views of the hudson valley and the catskill mountains. the buildings for the center, which include permanent and guest residences, an administration building and a large meditation hall, are placed in the northern end of the site, set back away from the highway. the buildings are all oriented towards the west and south to maximize view and light, while each building is organized around an internal courtyard.
the design concept for the buildings evokes both the tradition of grass roofed houses in korea and a natural disposition of groups of trees placed along the grassy slope. the buildings are constructed primarily of local woods, and designed to minimize energy use by taking advantage of the natural light and ventilation.
