The Kid, Modern Times & TheGreat Dictatorwhich, in 1940,saw him tackle dialogue forthe first time
In the anti-Communist hysteriaof the 1950s, Chaplin becamepersona non grata and vowednever to return to America
He did not return until 1972for a special CareerAchievement Oscar

In the 30s, he was divorced,
bankrupt, alcoholic and droppedby MGM for unreliability whenhe refused to make what heconsidered inferior pictures
Worked all through the 30s &40s in Europe and on stage
