In African societies, the arts are part of a child’s upbringing. The arts, especially traditional African performing arts, emphasize relationships. It is the ability to relate to oneself, other people and the environment that so effectively supports integrated development in the child. In my work, I emphasize these arts not so much in and of themselves, but in their capacity to stimulate a child’s cognitive, emotional, and social development.
