As the Board President of Capital Repertory Theatre, I’m excited to welcome you to our 34th Season! For more than three decades we’ve created meaningful theatre with an authentic connection to the community. This season will undoubtedly be another great one that we look forward to sharing with you.
On behalf of our Board of Trustees, staff and actors, thank you for your continued support of our beloved artistic institution. TheREP plays a leading role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Alba-ny and the Capital region. Your critical support makes this possible.
TheREP is one of the largest arts organizations in the region. We not only produce great theater but we are an economic asset that forms the bedrock of a success-ful community. Our diverse programming includes the subscription series, On-The-Go! Educational tours, and summer acting camps. We foster the creativity and innovation that is the foundation of our growing regional economy. With an annual budget over $2 million and a history of produc-ing more than 5,000 performances and employing more than 1,500 professional artists, theREP returns more than 83% of our budget directly back to the local community. We bring vitality and commerce to downtown Albany in the form of more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists. We’re an economic engine not only for the entertainment district on North Pearl Street, but for the City of Albany and the entire Capital Region.
It’s our hope that you enjoy a fantastic performance here at Capital Repertory Theatre. If you do, please consider a gift to our Annual Fund. Tell a friend, neighbor or business colleague about the great experience you had and remind them of the rich cultural offerings in our region. Ticket sales cover only a portion of the cost of bringing great professional performances to the stage and impactful educational programs to the classrooms. It’s through the generous support of patrons, subscribers, friends and donors like you that we are able to present the great art and entertain-ment to which you’ve grown accustomed.
On behalf of all here at the theatre, thank you again for your support. Enjoy the show, and come see us again soon!

Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Capital Repertory Theatre. We are thrilled to have world-class theater in the heart of downtown Albany thanks to theREP. The Theatre has a rich history of producing excellent entertainment, giving us more than 5,000 performances since its inception in 1981.
Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
This year, theREP will live up to our expectations, bringing fabulous theater to general audi-ences and students throughout the region. We’ll experience many human emotions as topnotch actors make situations come alive for us on stage, and we’ll enjoy shows from classics to a World Premiere! The lineup includes the comedy-drama OTHER DESERT CITIES, the enchanting and in-spiring THE SECRET GARDEN, the delightful comedy HOW WATER BEHAVES (World Premiere), the sidesplitting SOUVENIR, and an elegant and stirring rendition of HAMLET.
Please join me in applauding Capital Repertory Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill and the Capital Repertory Theatre Board of Directors for their dedication to theater and the arts in Albany. Thank you to all the audience members, actors, designers, directors, technicians, sponsors and friends for helping to make truly spectacular theater possible in the City of Albany. It couldn’t be done without all of you!
We invite you to come early or stay late to enjoy culinary delights from around the world right here in downtown Albany. We wish theREP continued success, and hope you enjoy the show!
Sincerely,
Kathy M. Sheehan Mayor, City of Albany

Welcome to theREP!
What do opera and the Erie Canal have in common?
They are the subjects of the two shows currently being produced at theREP! On our main stage, you will find SOUVENIR: A FANTASIA ON THE LIFE OF FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS, Stephen Temperley’s delightful play about the relationship between the infamously bad singer of great arias and her music teacher, Cosme McMoon. In communities throughout the Capital Region and Upstate, young people will discover the joy of live theatre and history in our touring production of THEY BUILT AMERICA: THE WORKERS OF THE ERIE CANAL.
Our core mission is really twofold: to create great theatre for all people of the Capital Region, and to ensure that every young person in the 14 counties that make up our community experiences live theatre before graduating from high school. Both of these principles guide the programming you will encounter from theREP.
As one of the anchor attractions in downtown Albany, we attract more than 60,000 visits annually through our doors, with more than 200 performances on our stage every year! That does not include our school touring performances or the many events that populate our lobby and café, which we make available to civic and other not-for-profit organizations. All of this activity is a part of our dedication to creating a “community living room,” where people can gather for entertainment, as well as social, civic and educational purposes.
Our On-the-Go! touring shows feature stories about New York State history and adaptations of great literature. This season, PURE POE and THEY BUILT AMERICA will be seen by more than 13,000 students in communities through the Erie Canal Corridor and travel as far as Harlem, where we will perform two shows at an elementary school. The stories illuminated by our scripts emphasize the perseverance of those who made our country into a nation, focusing on the diversity that is the legacy of our American heritage.
When you subscribe to our season or donate to our Annual Fund, you become an important part of sustaining the excellence on our stage and fostering pride in our region’s own stories and our role in history. When you join our family of patrons, you join the “community living room,” as someone who really understands what it means to have the arts as a vital part of our urban neighborhoods.
Thank you for being here tonight! We could not do what we do without you!
See you next time for HAMLET!
BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Put a throng of opera buffs into a room and ask the question: “Who is the best soprano of all time?” and you will probably find yourself in the midst of a rather heated discussion. However, put the question “who is the worst opera singer?” and you might hear a resounding cheer of “Florence Foster Jenkins!”
Raised in a prominent Pennsylvania family by a loving mother and strict father, Florence showed great early promise as a pianist. As a child and young student, she gave several recitals, including one at the White House. Later, she hoped to study aboard to deepen her skills both as a musician and singer, but her father would have none of it. His objections may have propelled Florence into an impulsive marriage to Dr. Jenkins, an act that resulted in her disinheritance. The marriage was short-lived and Florence found herself on her own making a living giving piano lessons.
After her father’s death, Florence came into a healthy annual income and moved to New York City accompanied by her mother. There, she became involved in
numerous women’s social clubs of the day, raising money for charity by producing a variety of concerts and operas. To further her love of opera, she founded the Verdi Club, whose members included some of the greatest opera singers and conductors of the era. She became a spokesperson for music education, a sought-after fundraiser and the center of the Verdi Club’s elaborate pageants of opera tableaus, which always featured Florence in the finale, wearing the most spectacular costume.
In the 1930s, she performed fund-raising recitals in social clubs throughout the Northeast and eventually held a series of popular private recitals in the ballroom of Manhattan’s Ritz Carlton Hotel, where she kept a suite of rooms. Her records sold thousands of copies. At the age of 76, encouraged by her fan base, Foster Jenkins planned a grand public recital to be given at Carnegie Hall. Tickets for her concert sold out more quickly than any other event in the venue’s history. More than 5,000 people were turned away.
The concert became a legend. The reviews were at best short and at worst scathing. Five days after the concert, while purchasing sheet music in her favorite store, she suffered a heart attack and died three weeks later. What impact, if any, the reviews played upon her health is pure speculation.
DRAMATURGY
The diva was in the detailsTHE LIFE AND TIMES OF FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS
How could she not know that she sang badly? Some have suggested that medical treatments she received as a young adult may have damaged her hearing and perception of pitch. For certain, she never lacked confidence and truly loved music. Her producing activities over two decades provided work for hundreds of artists and raised thousands of dollars for social causes and the war effort.
Four plays have been written about her, and one can easily find her recordings on YouTube, where she is something of a cult celebrity. Additionally, there is a new biopic entitled Florence, starring Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins, due out in 2015.
