Ryan’s Ramblings… I would like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped with VBS 2012! Through your hard work and dedication we were able to provide an amazing VBS experience to the children and parents of our community. I would especially like to say THANK YOU to Leslie Jones for coordinating VBS this year. It was awesome. I am also grateful to all our teachers, leaders, cooks, cleaners, set-up crews, set designers and musical talent for sharing your gifts and love of children with us this year. YOU ALL ARE AMAZING! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I look forward to working with you again throughout the year as we prepare for VBS 2013. Also, as a reminder, we are bringing back Children's Youth Groups starting Sunday, September 9 @ 5:00pm. Youth groups for children will last one hour. We will be offering a Bible lesson, music time, and craft time. Classes will be divided into K-1, 2-3, 4-5. We are still in need of a K-1 teacher. If you are interested please contact Susan Baker or myself. I look forward to continued growth in all areas of
our youth ministry! In Christ, Pastor Ryan
From Leslie Jones, Director of Vacation Bible School: We started out with three nights of VBS for the middle schoolers and high
schoolers. These nights were mainly devoted to enlightening the teens as
to what they would be doing during VBS for the elementary and
preschool children. We oriented them to the SKY program and directed
them as to how to be a good 'crew leader' . Some volunteered to lead the
preschoolers and others volunteered to lead the elementary children. They
were all anxious to help out.
The following week was VBS for preschool and elementary students. We
had a great week of VBS at Southwood Church. The children learned that
no matter what happens, they can trust God and that everything is
possible with God. They raised enough money to purchase 93 mosquito
nets for the children in Mali, Africa and wrote them cards. We ended the
week with a pancake supper and a balloon release while it was sprinkling,
with bible verses attached to each balloon. We tried to send God's
message out even in the rain. "We will fly..we will soar..nothing is
impossible....we will rise..in the storm......nothing is impossible".
We had an average of 73 participants each night ranging from 3 years old
to 11 years old. We also had over 50 teenagers and adults that worked
throughout the week in many different capacities, such as station leaders,
crew leaders, pictures, stage design, registration and snacks and cleanup.
The teens of our church did an AWESOME job as leaders of the groups.
The theme of this year's VBS was "everything is possible with God" and
we proved that. Everyone pulled together to work to make it as fun and
meaningful as possible. Our VBS was outstanding thanks to all of YOU
that had a part in it. Southwood Church, YOU ROCK !
Average July Attendance - 305
From the Desk of Pastor Rick Vernon
Thank you all for your love and support of Southwood Memorial
Christian Church, our ministries and for me and my family. I
want you all to celebrate with me as I embark on a new chapter
in my life. I AM EXCITED about the opportunity to retire. As
you know, my lovely wife, Jane, retired in 2011 after 32 years
teaching at Southwood Elementary School. It has always been
part of my life plan to retire shortly after Jane. After 12 years as
pastor of Southwood and 20 years previous as a leader in our
church, I am ready to step back and spend more time
worshipping. I love my church family and I am not going away.
I am just stepping back. I feel God is leading my decision to
retire. I know he has more for me to do and I am willing. I desire
emotional, physical and spiritual enrichment to prepare me for
God's next opportunity to use my gifts and talents. I will remain
active within my church family. God willing you will see me and
we will worship together, laugh together, comfort each other and
cry together. Southwood has been blessed to be one of the fastest
growing and exciting churches in North Carolina. Let's allow the
Holy Spirit to continue to lead us into a wonderful future of
discipleship. And if you are reading this and do not have a
church home, I invite you to come to Southwood and be part of
our exciting future.
Let's go MAKE DISCIPLES!
I LOVE YOU ALL!

CAMP CAROLINE REPORT – MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP
JULY 23RD
-27TH
. Seven of our middle school students
attended Camp Caroline last week for a time of fun and
Christian fellowship. Youth leaders, Pastor Ryan, John Foust
and Aaron Atkinson also attended as counselors. Our praise
band, Souls’ Devotion, provided an uplifting program of
music for the campers on Thursday night. Several campers
said some of their favorite things about their week at Camp
Caroline were: making new friends, meeting new people,
cabin time, “cool” counselors and sharing the love of Christ
with others!
The most constant thing in the universe is change. Every day we are reminded that the world is not the same as it was yesterday. We are not the same and most assuredly Southwood Memorial Christian Church is not the same. Most of us are prone to nostalgia. Things were better when… While we are not really ready to return to home without air conditioning, lives without computers or cell phones. The same is true with God’s people. We are comfortable with things that are familiar to us. We tend to be anxious when change occurs. We are facing a major change. Pastor Rick Vernon is retiring from the pulpit. He has reached a point in his life when he is ready for a new chapter. We will begin a new chapter as well. This can and should be a time for excitement and anticipation. God is ready to open new doors of opportunity for Southwood and we must be ready to walk boldly through those open doors. While we may be anxious about the future, we need to remember the admonition of the apostle Paul found in his letter to the church at Philippi. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7) Let us all remember to pray. Pray for Rick and Jane. Pray for Southwood and pray for each other. We are a family and families celebrate, cry and pray together. This is a time of celebration. It is also a time of change. Let us pray that God will guide us through this time and see His kingdom grow. Rick is a “child” of Southwood. He has grown and flourished. His leadership has helped this congregation grow and flourish. Now he is ready to step back and enjoy the fruits of his labors. We wish him well and look forward to working with him in his new role as we embrace the change that is inevitable.
Jim Cullen, Board Chairman
