think we have less than we do. We
always underestimate how much time
it will take to pack it up.
Don’t make your next move a
nightmare, start packing when you

everything and anything you don’t
need. Start packing up those out-of-
season items, you won’t need them.

cater to an upscale crowd’s demands,
but at far less painful prices than you’ll
fi nd in bigger centres.

one. Unlike Beyoncé’s 2006 Irreplaceable music video where she put her boyfriend out of the
house with one swift kick to the backside, your roomie break-up will require a bit more patience
and planning. It wont be as easy as putting all of their belongings in a box and singing to the left,
to the left, everything you own in the box to the left. Besides, sometimes friends just need to
move on - no drama required.
What you and your roommate need is a plan of action. One that will leave both parties feeling at ease and with
some sense of security concerning the changes that are about to take place.
Once you’ve seen the signs and are ready to move on, consider these steps to ensure you keep the peace and
move on from your roommate the mature way :
FACE THE MUSIC
You decided you’re ready to move on, now just tell your roommate
already! Don’t leave them in the dark about your plans to move in with
your signifi cant other or to get a bigger place. This will be a big change
for the both of you and one that requires an upfront conversation. No
Post-It Note break ups allowed!
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Whether you’re the one moving out or not, you need to give your
roommate suffi cient time to plan. Do they need to fi nd a new place or a
new roommate? It’s a big change and one that comes with the fi nancial
burden of potentially not being able to meet the entire months rent
alone or not being able to fi nd a place in their budget. Plan in a timely
manner to ensure a smooth transition.
BE CONSIDERATE
You might be ready to move on, but your roommate may not. Be
considerate of their needs and concerns. Off er to help them move out or
help them fi nd a new place to rent if possible. Breaking up may just be a
question of moving on and it doesn’t have to be on bad terms.
BE READY TO COMPROMISE
You’ve come to terms with parting ways, now how do you divide a
couch? Moving on also means dividing common goods you may have
purchased together like the couch, the toaster and even the cat. Be
prepared to compromise. In the end, you’re just going to have to deal
with letting some things go.
FOLLOW-UP
You and your roommate have offi cially moved on. Follow-up with
each other (i.e go out for a drinks) or let them know if you received mail
that belongs to them or if you have any phone messages to forward
them.

Whether you’re the one moving out or not, you need to give your
roommate suffi cient time to plan. Do they need to fi nd a new place or a
new roommate? It’s a big change and one that comes with the fi nancial
burden of potentially not being able to meet the entire months rent
alone or not being able to fi nd a place in their budget. Plan in a timely
manner to ensure a smooth transition.
BE CONSIDERATE
You might be ready to move on, but your roommate may not. Be
considerate of their needs and concerns. Off er to help them move out or
help them fi nd a new place to rent if possible. Breaking up may just be a
question of moving on and it doesn’t have to be on bad terms.
BE READY TO COMPROMISE
You’ve come to terms with parting ways, now how do you divide a
couch? Moving on also means dividing common goods you may have
purchased together like the couch, the toaster and even the cat. Be
prepared to compromise. In the end, you’re just going to have to deal
with letting some things go.
FOLLOW-UP
You and your roommate have offi cially moved on. Follow-up with
each other (i.e go out for a drinks) or let them know if you received mail
that belongs to them or if you have any phone messages to forward
them.

THERE’S AN OLD RULE IN BUSINESS:
WHAT IS NOT IN WRITING
was never said.
Although some agreements may need just
a handshake, others that involve a multitude
of variables require a contract so that all
the parties understand what is expected
of them. This is particularly true when you
hire professional movers. You’re obviously
the “who,” but we also need to know
exactly “what,” “where” and “when” in order
to transport your items to your new place.
Within those general categories, there can
be many details, and finding out about them
on moving day is counterproductive. Think
ahead.
The first thing to do is find a reputable
mover. You can check online with the
Better Business Bureau or the Canadian
Association of Movers, and of course, find
out who friends and family members have
used. Select a company that has a tried-and-
true track record. Then ask questions, and
remember that the movers should be asking
you a lot of questions as well to determine
exactly what the move will entail.
When we meet customers to arrange their
move, we need to know about everything
they expect to take so we can prepare as
accurate an estimate as possible.
In many ways, estimating is a science.
Computers help, but the results are only as
good as the information we input. Telling us
on moving day that you forgot you want to
take the shed in the backyard can hold things
up for hours. It will also add to your costs.
And speaking of costs, we need to know
well ahead of time if you want us to provide
the service of packing. Deciding this two
days before the move likely won’t work. In
addition, if we have quoted only on moving
and not on packing, a new contract will have
to be drawn up with a higher price. If you
do the packing yourself, read the contract
as to whether or how much your items are
covered, should damages occur.
We also have to know whether you have
anything other than Point A to Point B in
mind for moving day. If you forgot to tell us
that your dining room set has to be dropped
off somewhere else first, it’s like the meter
running in a taxicab. You will pay more for
unexpected side trips. Plus, unless we know
in advance, we may pack the dining set in
an awkward place for unloading partway
to your destination. Again, this will cost
you time and money—two things that are
precious commodities on moving day.
It is our responsibility as professional
movers to ask the right questions, but until
we develop ESP, we need to rely on you to
explain what you need from us. A contract
protects you as much as the movers, but
only if you read it, understand it and abide
by it.
