What’s on your wish list when

searching for a home to lease?

I did an informal survey with a small

group of past and present renters to

see what people look for, and the

results are in. In the top spot – without

a doubt – are actually two key items

that go hand-in-hand: clean and quiet.

A building with reliable security

system was also near the top of the

list in many cases, as was a property

manager that responded quickly to

issues, and a laundry room that was

readily available and fully functional.

New appliances and new paint were

also in demand and in one case, a

home that o� ered lots of natural light

was a request.

While your “Top 10” list may read

di� erently, make sure you do in fact

have a list handy so that you can

compare apples with apples when

shopping for a space to lease.

I know some people look at having

lots of space as a luxury – but not

me. I dislike living in more space than

I need. It just becomes a place store

stu� and more rooms to clean.

I’ve always been like this. It’s not

a matter of budget, it’s a matter

of lifestyle. I like to have the right

amount of space.

Some people need to upsize for

various reasons. Working from home?

Sure, that home o� ce is absolutely a

need. Growing family? I can see the

point of more rooms here quite easily.

But when the nest is empty or the

opportunity avails itself, downsizing

can be a really good idea. A home

should be a place you live, not just

a place to accommodate all of the

stu� you accumulate. You shouldn’t

need to upsize because your stu�

doesn’t fi t – not that can’t! If you love

shopping and collecting, by all means,

fi nd the right sized place for you and

your things. But often it’s a matter of

the right storage, not needing more

space. It’s a great way to budget

better – and clean less!
