The year 2015 promises to be an exciting time at Southwest Center as we celebrate 25 years of service in the fight against HIV/AIDS. As we take time to recognize all that has been accomplished in the last 25 years, we also need to take time to reflect upon what has yet to be accomplished. People living with HIV and AIDS today have a more productive and a higher quality life than ever before. This incredible progress is possible thanks to the great medical advancements that have taken place – and because so many of you cared enough to support us and advocate for changes to assist those most in need. However, there is still work to be done: we haven’t found a cure and we at Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS are dedicated to continuing the fight until a cure is discovered.

As we move into the next 25 years, Southwest Center is embracing change. In order to stay current, the Center is investing in a new Electronic Medical Health Care Record system. This system will allow us to do an even better job of tracking client visits and needs so we can connect them to the right services. As with any transition, there will be bumps along the way; however, I am confident that our team is ready and able to handle this important technological transition.

Thank you for all the support, dedication and commitment you have given to Southwest Center over the years. As we venture down the path of our next 25 years, we will continue to need that support. We cannot meet our mission without YOU!

Thank You!

In December, Holidays Around the World celebrated a tradition of giving through Kwanza, Hannukah, Navidad and Christmas, while helping children impacted by HIV/AIDS. This year’s event, held on Saturday, December 20th, commemorated the various holidays with food, festivities, and arts and crafts, including family holiday card making and cookie decorating. The children especially enjoyed the bouncy house, popcorn and the highlight of the day, a visit fom Santa. Thanks to the many community groups that held a toy drive, Santa delivered toys and words of advice to over 150 boys and girls. This year a bike challenge made it possible to give away 36 bicycles!

One ten-year-old boy with tears in his eyes exclaimed, “Am I dreaming? Is this real? I can’t believe it!” We especially want to acknowledge and thank all of our volunteers, like the many wonderful folks from Bank of America, for all of their assistance this year. Thank you to all who made it possible to bring such joy to children who otherwise might not receive any gifts for the holidays.

Southwest Center Celebrates 25 Years of History-Making and Service

In 1990, founder Kirk Baxter and a group of community leaders started Phoenix Body Positive, a grassroots organization with a passion to address the AIDS epidemic. Body Positive provided a safe-haven for those impacted by HIV during a time when fear, stigma and discrimination were rampant. In a bold and innovative move, these leaders included clinical trials research in the organization’s programming - a service typically found in university and hospital settings. Body Positive later became Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS while continuing to focus on its core areas: 1) Prevention and Education, 2) Nutrition and Wellness, 3) Counseling, and 4) Clinical Trials Research. “From humble beginnings as a peer-driven advocacy coalition, we’ve come a long, long way,” said Kirk Baxter. “We learned early on, that we could advocate from sun-up to sun-down for the next several decades and specific programs our people needed to survive simply wouldn’t happen, unless we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Thanks to a consistently dedicated staff, a tenacious board of directors and hundreds of volunteers, we continue to thrive - a full quarter of a century later! With all of your help, we look forward to a bright and hopeful future.”

1990 - Phoenix Body Positive founded by Kirk Baxter 1993 - Partnered with McDowell Healthcare Clinic 1994 - Clinical Trials program begins 2004 - Behavioral Health program begins 2005 - Camp Incredible founded

2006 - Body Positive becomes Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS 2008 - Youth Transition program begins 2012 - Construction begins on The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness 2013 - Grand Opening of The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness 2015 - Celebrating 25 Years of service

People, Passion, Purpose

CLIENT up CLOSE: RAMONARamona, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2007, has been taking full advantage of the range of supports offered by Southwest Center ever since she discovered the organization in 2008. At Southwest Center, we have long understood that people living with HIV need a steady supply of medical, behavioral, social and prevention sevices in order to live well with this complex, chronic disease, while keeping others from becoming infected. Over the years, Ramona has worked with our dietician to ensure her nutrion needs are met; enjoyed the support of other women in our psychosocial group, Women’s Voices; joined the Integrated Collaborative Care program; and participated in individual counseling. Ramona’s son also benefited from couseling as he grappled with the news of his mother’s illness.

When Ramona’s small community discovered her HIV status, Ramona and her family experienced fierce discrimination from her fearful neighbors. Ramona turned to Southwest Center for the support she needed during this difficult time. Five years ago, Ramona began caring for the child of a relative. Now Southwest Center has begun helping her cope with the new challenge of raising a baby while managing her disease. Ramona uses our Logan’s Playground child care services when she attends onsite medical and support appointments, enjoys the annual Holidays Around the World party, and has attended Camp Incredible, the annual summer camp for families impacted by HIV, for the last five years.

Southwest Center’s new home, the Parsons Center for Health and Wellness, is gaining recognition as a beautiful, convenient and modern location for conferences, meetings and special events, including weddings. On December 6th, Lynn McDonald and Chuck Smith were married at the Parsons Center, following what Lynn likes to refers to as their “35-year engagement.” City of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton attended as a special guest. Mayor Stanton spoke briefly with the guests, remarking that, as a place for hope and community, there is no better location than The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness for LGBT weddings. The ceremony took place in the Center’s light-filled first floor area featuring floor to ceiling windows facing Central Avenue. For the reception, the 75 guests moved to the main conference and ballroom, formerly the recording studio for TV station Channel 12. Lynn said he and Chuck fell in love with the Center’s open layout and industrial look, in addition to the central location, right off the light rail. “The facility was great, the staff were wonderful, and we really want to get the word out about this location,” said Lynn. For more information about weddings, meetings and other events at The Parsons Center for Health and Wellness, contact Ben Brooks at 602.595.8137 or via email at [email protected].
