Bicycle Facility Types• Sharrow-Shared Lane Markings (SLMs), or “sharrows,” are road

markings used to indicate a shared lane environment for bicycles and automobiles. Among other benefits shared lane markings reinforce the legitimacy of bicycle traffic on the street, recommend proper bicyclist positioning, and may be configured to offer directional and wayfinding guidance

Bicycle Facility Types• Bike Lane-Bike lanes designate an exclusive space for bicyclists

through the use of pavement markings and signage. The bike lane is located adjacent to motor vehicle travel lanes and flows in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic. Bike lanes are typically on the right side of the street, between the adjacent travel lane and curb, road edge, or parking lane.

Southrun Rd – Silverbrook Rd to Blue Rock Ln• Proposed Section (Green)

Department of Transportation 10

• Retain all through lanes and parking that exists today

• Narrow existing lane widths and add bike lanes

County of Fairfax, Virginia

Southrun Rd – Blue Rock Ln to Catia Ln• Not enough room for travel lanes, bike lanes, and parking• Want to hear community’s viewpoint on the parking

• No housing from Silverdale to Ambrose Court• What about parking from Ambrose Court to Catia Ln? Parking needed?

• Doesn’t have to be all or northing from Blue Rock Ln to Catia Ln• Can extend bike lanes some of the distance

• VDOT does not have funding available this year to pave gravel shoulders north of Catia Ln• Can be part of a future project

Project Impacts

Department of Transportation 14

• No impact or change to vehicle traffic

• Possible available parking reduction of .2 miles - .35 miles• Between Blue Rock Ln and Catia Ln

• Intersection approaches remain the same

• Increased safety and reliability for bicyclists and pedestrians

• Narrower lanes have impact of visually narrowing the roadway, which promotes slower speeds/reduce speeding
