The best times of day to whale watch are the early morning and late afternoon when glare is less likely to make sighting the blow difficult. This guide will introduce you to some of the behaviour you might see, the species that visit our waters and features that set them apart from other species. The first sign to look for is when a whale blows, shooting water vapour into the air, but if you’re lucky, you’ll see them feed - scooping up krill and small fish along the surface - or breach where they leap high out of the water to land on their back or side. Other behaviour includes slapping the water with their fins or tail, or they will bob their head out of the water so they can have a look around, and you can see where they’ve submerged by a footprint of flat water they leave behind. Other animals you are likely to see in this nutrient rich environment are birds such as eagles, albatross and shearwater, and marine mammals such as Australian fur seals, common dolphins and bottle nosed dolphins. The best vantage points are high areas which are exposed to the elements so be pre- pared for rain or sun and protect yourself accordingly. A set of binoculars, a snack and a drink will also enhance the experience. Watching whales from shore O rcas or killer whales: (Orcinus Orca) Killer whales are the largest species of dolphin and are easily recognised by their striking fea- tures, covered with distinctive black and white or cream markings and extremely long, tapered dorsal fins. They are toothed whales, and car- nivorous hunters which feed on a variety of species including fish, squid, sea birds, seals, sea lions and other whales. Orcas hunt in groups (pods) of three to 40 individuals, using highly effective hunting techniques, hence the nickname “wolves of the sea”. They are highly social ani- mals, as evident throughout Eden’s history. The best place to see Killer Whales from land is at Greencape, south of Eden, in Ben Boyd National Park, but you must be patient! Killer whales pictured off Eden in May, 2008. It has very dark grey or black skin, with occasional white patches on the belly and can reach 14 to 18 metres long; its two separate blowholes produce a unique V-shaped blow. Southern rights have an enor- mous head, which is up to one quarter of its total body length. The callosities at the front of the head are often referred to as a bonnet. Locally, Southern right whales are known for behaving like “floating logs” and their peculiar appearance, which can be con- fused with other things like mus- sel buoys, however they do get active on occasion. http://www.wildabout- whales.com.au/Whales- Facts/Whale-Species/Southern- Right-Whales Southern rights: Gentle giants JOIN THE AT THE HUMPBACK HIGHWAY EDEN WHALE FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 3-4 Killer whale Southern right Robert Michelin Gravel - Sand - Soil - Rubble Ph: 6496 1324 AH: 6496 1850 Fax: 6496 3512 13 Ben Boyd Drive Eden JOHN MICHELIN & SON Earthmoving Contractors • Grader • Loader • Backhoe & Borer • Trucks • Bobcat • Excavator 2306203 • Water Cart • Stockfeeds • Landscape Supplies Southland Fish Supplies Southland Fish Supplies PROUDLY SUPPORTING THE EDEN WHALE FESTIVAL A local company employing local people Public viewing 9am - 11am daily 210 Imlay Street, Eden 6496 3350 2306213 True Blue Whale Watching HIRE BOATS also available Do you live in the Bega Valley Shire and have been meaning to go whale watching for years?
