Prowler worryBY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

Beckenham residents are worried there may be a “prowler” trying to get into homes at night while they are sleeping.

Posts on the Christchurch South Patrol and the Beckenham Neighbourhood Facebook pages last Monday warned residents of a “prowler” on Tennyson St.

The prowler had jumped a fence last Sunday night and tried to enter an open window but the home owners woke from the noise

and the offender fled, the posts say.

Police are advising people to lock their windows and doors.

Residents Facebook comments on the posts urged others to stay safe and warned them to close win-dows at night in spite of it being hot in the summer months.

But the Christchurch South Patrol - a group of community volunteers - said it would increase its patrols.

Said deputy chairman Josh

Tabley: “All we can do is do more patrols and hang around a bit lon-ger than we usually do.

“We will make it one of our hot spots, we’ll flood the area and go down all the side streets.”

He said Tennyson St had become a problem area over the last six months.

In August a young woman was followed when she walked home from work, he said.

She was walking home from Cof-fee Culture along Tennyson St at

about 10.45pm when a man walked out from Longfellow St and started following her.

He turned away when he heard her say on her phone that someone was following her.

The patrol began visiting the area more after that incident, Mr Tabley said.

He said other people had written on the Christchurch South Patrol Facebook page about being followed by people in cars while they walked down Tennyson St.

A Kimihia Parents’ College student was presented with a laptop from Fer-rymead Rotary for academic achieve-ment.

Shayna Nathan was the top aca-demic student, but was also a natural leader, a great role model and an inspiration to her fellow students.

She undertook several Christchurch Polytechnic papers last year and will pursue full-time tertiary studies there this year.

Kimihia Parents’ College is an edu-cational centre in Woolston for teen-age parents who have had to curtail their secondary education to care for their babies.

The babies and young children are cared for at the Kimihia nursery alongside the college.

This facility allows the young mothers to complete their full-time secondary education, knowing that their children are close by and are well cared for.

Head of learning Pat Mason leads the staff who provide education for their students.

Miss Nathan will apply for the Ro-tary Youth Leadership Award course in January 2016.

It is a one week live-in course for about 50 18 to 24-year-olds from the upper half of the South Island.

Cashmere High School was named a finalist in a global en-ergy sustainability competition recently.

The students’ work helped the school cut its electricity usage by almost one third.

It was one of three finalists for the Oceania section for global high schools in The Zayed Fu-ture Energy Prize.

The prize recognises individ-uals, organisations, and schools who have contributed to renew-able energy and sustainability.

Teacher Leith Cooper and students Liam Senior and Sam Adrist were flown over to Abu Dhabi for the awards ceremony

last week, which is the world’s largest sustainability confer-ence.

The Oceania category was won by Melbourne Girls’ Col-lege but the Cashmere team was presented with an award by Ice-land President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, for their efforts.

In 2012 the school was se-lected to pilot a programme to reduce power use and develop energy-efficient practices.

It was funded by Energy Ef-ficiency and Conservation Au-thority, the Canterbury Agency for Energy and the Ministry of Education.

Enviroschools created and supplied the education resourc-es for the pilot programme.

The school installed six smart meters to measure the electric-ity used in the school every 30 minutes, and two LCD screens to display the real-time results.

The results could be moni-tored live on the screens, and the school used the live data in maths and physics classes to aid learning.

A “Switch it off” campaign encouraged students to turn off lights and heating in classrooms when they were not needed which cut electricity use by 10 per cent and saved more than $12,000.

Last year the school also in-stalled energy-efficient LED lights throughout the school.

Principal Mark Wilson said

the installment of these lights was an investment with a five-year payback.

After five years the school could use the saved money to install more LED lights, or look at installing solar panelling, he said.

Mr Wilson said it was unfor-tunate the school did not win, but it was still a great achieve-ment to be named a finalist.

He was proud of the students and grateful to the teachers in-volved in making the project so successful.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize, was set up in 2008 by the ruler of Abu Dhabi, His High-ness General Sheikh Moham-med bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

READY TO GO: Metua about to throw the ball in.

BY GRACE CABELL

More than 90 per cent of submissions re-ceived by the city council are in support of having a sports hub at Nga Puna Wai.

City councillors are considering sub-missions for the development proposal through a public hearings this Tuesday [27] and Wednesday [28].

And although only 10 per cent oppose it, many of those are residents living near the proposed development.

They say having the sports hub devel-opment at the southwest site will have a major impact on their lives.

City council recreation and sports unit manager John Filsell said the hearings process will give elected members the chance to “really nail down” the issues by the submitters before a final decision was made.

“This development is about catering to all of Christchurch and beyond, and these deliberations will help everyone reach the best possible outcome,” said Mr Filsell.

“The remaining 10 per cent, 488 submitters, did not support the pro-posal, with most of their concerns being around the A & P Association,” he said.

But resident John Brundall who lived on McMahon Drive - where the entrance to the hub would go said residents were concerned with much more.

He said it would have a wider effect on

those living in the area for decades.“It will adversely affect those people

for years to come. Someone pointed out to me there is plenty of land available further out near Templeton.

“It may seem some distance away from the city centre now but in another 10 to 20 years we will have expanded out to there,” he said.

Mr Filsell said a total of 4237 people supported the development going ahead at Nga Puna Wai.

The public hearings would run from 9am each day, where a panel made up of five councillors will hear from the 26 submitters who requested a chance to speak.

Some of the speakers included Hill-morton residents group member Philip Robinson and Canterbury A & P Asso-ciation event manager Geoff Bone.

Following this the panel would recom-mend to the full city council whether to proceed with the development.

The facility would combine an athlet-ics track, hockey turfs, indoor and out-door tennis courts and sports fields.

The final decision whether to proceed with the development will be made in March/April 2015.

The city council has committed $6.7 million towards the development of the athletics track.

Double, double, toil and trouble

So Derek, tell me a bit about yourself.

I grew up in North London. I travelled to New Zealand in 1988 and stayed in Hawera in Taranaki, for a while and my wife and I knew we wanted to come back. We moved over in 1999 and spent about a month in Auckland, a month in Wellington and then came to Christchurch. We spent about a month in each and Christ-church won. It is very peaceful and a good place for a family. God didn’t tell us about the earthquakes but we’ve survived.

And I understand you live in Mt Pleasant, how long have you lived there?

We rented for a year in Mt Pleasant when we first came to Christchurch. We’re up on the hill. My wife Louise had got work and I’d got work and there was no way she was going to get off the hill, she loves it too much.

Tell me about your family.Louise is a doctor and we have

three kids aged 17, 15 and 13. My two eldest girls were born in England and my youngest son was born here in New Zealand.

So what do you do for work?

I spend three days a week work-ing at Statistics New Zealand. I’m a statistician so that bores people at dinner parties and I am also a property investor so I buy houses and do them up. It keeps me busy a couple of days a week. And then there is the theatre company, we’ve been running Top Dog for about 12 years and this will be our eleventh Summer Shakespeare Festival.

You started Top Dog Theatre, how did it come about?

We did our first play in 2002, it was a Steven Berkoff and it was successful so we thought ‘lets do another one’ and I just formed a company. We just have fun, it’s a non-profit organisation and we put on one or two shows a year. I don’t have a theatre or premises or anything. We just do what we want to do. Some of the stuff I do maybe others don’t want to do it because

it’s too risky because it is open air theatre, where we perform outside.

So what made you want to get into theatre?

I have no idea really, maybe meeting people. I don’t think I was one of those people who say they are born to act. I went and saw plays and gradually started taking it seriously. I thought it just looked like fun and you meet a lot of people. I’ve been directing for about 20 years now. I had my first full-length play that I wrote per-formed in Lyttelton at The Loons theatre when we arrived in New

Zealand. We’ve really suffered for venues after the earthquakes, the things we used to take for granted, but it’s coming back now.

Tell me about the Summer Shakespeare Festival.

We’re doing Macbeth and there is a superstition behind Macbeth, apparently in the theatre you’re not allowed to say the name of the play, you have to call it the Scot-tish play. It’s just one of those old wives’ tales. It’s very hard for me because I’m doing it in the open air so where is my theatre? We don’t want to play with it, you’re just so scared you just go through

touching wood, we’re definitely respectful. We’ve got a great cast of 25. It’s one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays and I’ve cut it by about 20 per cent. We perform outside at Mona Vale and this is our first non-comedy. We’ve done 10 comedies but someone said “how would you do something else?” So we thought sod it we’ll do Macbeth.

And how are rehearsals going? That’s the kiss of death telling

you that! We’re working hard. We have a 10-12 week rehearsal period and it’s always the tricky bit with three or four weeks to go.

The annual Summer Shakespeare Festival will start on February 11 with Top Dog Theatre bringing Macbeth to Mona Vale gardens. Reporter Bridget Rutherford spoke to director Derek Doddington about performing outside, theatre hiccups and the tricks to regaining your voice.

– Macbeth tests directorWe’re at books down now,

where no one can look at their scripts, and that’s when everything falls apart. But we’re on track. We rehearse on the Mona Vale lawn where we will be performing.

Why did you choose Mona Vale gardens?

I started an open air theatre company back in the UK. That is what I specialise in and that’s what the Summer Shakespeare Festival is. The beauty over there is you have all those castles and buildings and that’s what we used to perform in. We don’t have that here so I picked Mona Vale, it’s al-most like a natural amphitheatre. I found it about 13 years ago and we’ve stuck there ever since, it’s just so perfect. We put up a bit of a set but you’ve just got to go with the audience’s imagination.

So what is it like performing outside compared to inside?

It is very different, all micro-phoned. It’s very large and we might have 400 to 500 people in the audience so sometimes you can’t tell who is speaking because it comes out of the speakers. So it’s much more physical, you’ve got to make sure you immediately catch the audience’s eye so they know who is speaking. The weather is also a factor.

What do you do when it is raining?

I usually make a call at 6pm, if we’ve got 250 people in their rain gear ready to watch the play we will do it, it has to be pretty bad for us not to go ahead. We’ve got no

lighting so as long as it’s not dan-gerous it can rain in the middle of a performance and we can push on through. The worst we’ve had has been three called off, and the best we’ve done is the whole bloody lot.

What has been some of the biggest hiccups you have had while working in theatre?

Years ago when I was playing a role in a production I just walked on and thought ‘I have no idea what I’m meant to say’ so I went onto a speech that I was meant to say later. Then I realised what I was actually meant to be saying and I said “well enough of that, I’ll tell you that later”. You have some technical issues like people forget-ting to turn their microphones back on when they go on stage. I once had an actor who went off stage and forgot to turn his micro-phone off and said “I was f***ing hopeless tonight” and we thought ‘oh my god his microphone is still on!’ That was pretty awful. We’ve had actors and actresses slip over

on the grass at Mona Vale. They end up on their bum but the audi-ence love it. You’ve just got to laugh it off.

Have you had anyone come down with illness before a show?

Oh s*** yeah, that’s just some-thing the public don’t know about. We have tricks to sooth the throat. One is to gargle red tawny port and rest it at the back of your throat and spit it out, but you’re going to perform so you don’t want to drink it. We just have to battle through, adrenaline is a wonderful thing.

What are some of the best ways actors/actresses learn their lines?

People do it different ways, some use iPhones to record the lines and listen to them in the car. I’m a firm believer of writing them down. You cover the lines with a piece of paper and you write down what you think it is, and then check it. It is not until you write down the lines word for word that you really know them.

So what is your favourite Shakespeare play?

One of my favourites would be Much Ado About Nothing, but The Merchant of Venice is probably my best. I have played Shylock twice, once in the UK and once here. He is fantastic, one of my favourites of all time. I also love Steven Berkoff. I’ve done four of his plays. He was a great writer in the 60s and 70s. He writes really gritty stuff.

• Macbeth opens on February 11 and runs through to Febru-ary 21 at the Mound Lawn, Mona Vale gardens. The per-formances are from 6-8.10pm every night with matinees on both Saturdays at 2pm.

Tickets are $15, or $10 concession, and are available at the gate, or from The Court Theatre Box Office: 963 0870. Not recommended for children under eight.

FACES: Doddington (middle) performing Kvetch, a gritty Steven Berkoff play in 2013.

Consent for parkA $22 million adventure park in the Port Hills has been granted resource consent following a three-day hear-ing back in November. Last year the developer said if the resource consent application was successful, construction would start in March and take a year to complete. The park will be built over 358ha of forested land between Dyers Pass, Worsleys and Summit Rds.

Woolston catteryPublic consultation for a cattery in Woolston closed on Friday. The Cats Protection League cattery at Charlesworth St, applied for con-sent to expand its premises onto the neighbouring property. The city council would now review the ap-plication and come to a decision.

Repairs for two weeksRepairs to a wastewater main from 450-360 Barrington St began last week and is expected to take two weeks. There may be some park-ing restrictions while the work takes place to allow room for traf-fic to pass the worksite. Workers will be back at a later date to repair the publicly-owned sections of the wastewater lateral and the lateral connections in to the sewer main and will send another notice to resi-dents before this work starts.

Wastewater pipeWork to repair an earthquake-dam-aged wastewater pipe on Studholme and Somerfield Sts began on Friday and is expected to take two weeks. Two-way traffic will be maintained but there will be no on-street park-ing near the work site.

The Southern View asked readers if fishing should be banned in the Beckenham loop. If you want to comment on a local issue email [email protected]

Ben PickardI was just reading your article in the Southern

View. I agree that there should be a fishing ban. But why only in the Beckenham Loop?

Shouldn’t it be all the river until at least they get established.

I have lived bordering the river all my life (40-odd years) in all this time I have rarely seen any fish at all. (Maybe three times).

Until just last year . . . we seem to have a resi-dent trout in our area. I first spotted it around six to eight months ago. In that time I have been trying to track down some trout pellets to feed and encourage it back.

I managed to find some pellets just in the last three weeks and I feed out in the morning. I have only seen it once in that time but it has got bigger.

Around October I was sitting by the river and spotted three trout together. It was so great to see, but haven’t seen any numbers since.

We regularly feed the eels with meat scraps and sometimes the trout will also appear with them.

Like in some other parts of the country it would be good to see “feeding spots” by the river for the public to see the wildlife in action.

Like for instance the Queenstown lake. There are feed droppers that the public can pay money for a metered amount of food to come out.

The water life get to know this and will hang around waiting to be fed.

Even as a child I remember the Avon River has always had fish. But here on the Heathcote it has always seemed to be a struggle.

There used to be lots of snails, boatman, and cockabilly . . . but they seemed to have all disap-peared.

▌▌READER’S LETTER

A supporter of the suggestion to turn part of the Heathcote River into a no-fishing reserve wants to see the area extended.

The idea, which was raised on a Facebook page by local resident Shannon Ford, was to turn the Beckenham loop sec-tion of the river, from Waltham Pool to Cracroft shops, into a no-fishing reserve.

The suggestion has since generated a lot of support from locals and community board members.

Westmorland resident Albie Scott supported the idea whole-heartedly but believed the no-fishing zone should ex-tend to the corner of Cashmere and Hendersons Rds, rather than Cracroft shops.

Mr Scott said the stretch of the river that ran from Cracroft shops to that intersection was where the fish usually spawned.

“If you took it up that little bit more that would make a marvellous sanctuary.”

He had lived in Hamish Place for 21 years and the Heathcote was the boundary at the bottom of his section.

“When we shifted here we were the first place here, even salmon used to spawn in the river.”

He said the river used to have runs of salmon every year and it was also full of trout, cockabillies and mussels which kept it clean.

In the last two to five years children had been coming to the river, catching trout and

eel, killing them and throwing them back, he said.

He used to take his grand-children to look at the water life, but now there was nothing there.

“It would be a damn good thing for all of Christchurch.”

Mr Shannon initially sug-gested the ban could run from Waltham Pool to the Cracroft shops but was open to other suggestions.

“I don’t mind where the reserve is, longer the better I think.”

Call for no-fishing zone to be extended

Cameras and dye will be used to investigate the wastewater main pipes in Somerfield to check connections and see what ones are damaged.

Once the pipe investigation is done, Fulton Hogan work-ers will return and begin lining the wastewater main pipe and public wastewater laterals.

The work began today and would take about six months to complete.

PipeWorks will need to ac-cess an external drain on each private property to carry out a house connection dye test.

The crew will place a dye followed by a bucket of water down an external drain on

the property. There will be a camera in the

wastewater main that records where the dye comes out.

The coloured non-toxic dyes are used to determine exactly where lateral connections tie-in to the wastewater main and will help identify any redundant connections.

The inside of the damaged pipe will then be lined with a new material to strengthen it.

The work will take place on Leitch St, Dunn St, Baretta St, Studholme St, Tainui St, Moana St, Barrington St, Bard St, Young St, Aylmer St, Selwyn St, Strickland St and Holcombe Place.

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Not just fires. This week saw nearly 50 per cent more call-outs than average.

The dry weather continues and we saw a rural vegetation fire go-ing from one metre across to 50m in a matter of minutes.

There was also a mix of non-fire

incidents attended by our crews. Fourteen ambulance assists, a handful of car crashes and 80-odd false alarms added to the mix.

Last Wednesday, Addington’s crew helped a lady whose house was flooding. Some innovative plumbing adjustment to the cis-tern’s ballcock worked in this case.

Later the same day a three-year-

old became stuck in a cat door and apparently he was very unim-pressed about the predicament. Safely removed.

On Sunday, the smell of gas in a Beckenham home was traced to rotting vegetables in the green bin, and later that day Templeton Primary School received good old Fire Service treatment when

the hot water cylinder burst and firefighters responded with our special wet vacs from the city sta-tion to assist in the clean-up.

That evening a lady in Hoon Hay was concerned that a cord that had wrapped itself in a fan might set the place on fire and Addington again went to the res-cue to untangle the appliance.

On Monday two separate calls to smoke sightings turned out to be dust from earth-moving machines.

That same day smoke from a damaged truck caused the Lyttelton Tunnel to close for two hours and rural firefighters spent the entire day at Heyders Rd in Spencerville.

An odd week in the city.

A Fulton Hogan traffic controller was awarded a Pride of Workmanship award last week for his work in McCormacks Bay.

Sonny Makiri was nominated for the Rotary award by a Sumner local who had encountered him many times while on the road.

The citation on Mr Ma-kiri’s Pride of Workman-ship award wrote since the earthquakes he had a major impact on drivers in the area he controls.

“His cheerful, pleasant and helpful manner has certainly reduced driver frustration and road rage in the wider Christchurch rebuild area,” it read.

Christchurch South Rotary member Sarita McLean said he always smiled, waved and tipped his hat to drivers passing by while he was working.

“He was making it a little more bearable.”

The Christchurch South Rotary Vocational Services Committee received a number of nominations for the award and felt Mr Makiri was the best candidate.

The ceremony was held at College House where Christchurch South Rotary members presented the award and guest speaker Chris Sul-livan spoke about leading teams.

Does your child suffer from asthma? The new Smartinhaler delivers results

New Zealand has the second highest rates of asthma in the world, and one in four Kiwi children experiences asthma

symptoms. Despite this, regular adherence to asthma medication is poor. However, a new smart asthma inhaler with an audio-visual function has dramatically improved child and adolescent use of preventive asthma medication. The users also experienced significant improvements to their symptoms, wellbeing and quality of life, and needed their reliever medication less frequently.

The University of Auckland study, funded by Cure Kids and the Health Research Council, showed a significant improvement in night time awakening, coughing and wheezing.

Professor Ed Mitchell, Cure Kids Chair of Child Health Research and supervisor of the study’s lead author Amy Chan, says he is “absolutely staggered by the size of the effect. To see the improvement in the lives of these children is astounding”.

The participants also reported taking part in more sports and family activities. Parents reported feeling less frightened by their child’s asthma.

New Zealand digital health company Nexus6 Ltd created a new Smartinhaler device

called the SmartTrack, which was used in the study. The device has 14 different ringtones, which are cycled so users don’t get reminder fatigue. The SmartTrack reminder is only triggered when a dose is missed.

The results were published this month in The Lancet Respiratory Medical Journal.

To the researchers’ knowledge, this is the largest study in the world to investigate the effects of an inhaler device with audio-visual reminder function on asthma adherence and outcomes in children and adolescents.

It is also the first to show significant benefits in asthma outcomes and quality of life. The results are expected to gain international interest.

The randomised controlled trial recruited 220 children between the ages of six and 15 who presented to emergency departments with asthma symptoms.

The study was random, with half of the participants receiving a SmartTrack device for use with their preventive or ‘orange’ inhaler that had the audio-visual elements turned on, and the other half receiving the same device with the audio-visual elements turned off.

Participants were followed up every two months for six months and general asthma control was checked.

Key findings from the study were:• Medication adherence rate for the patient

group given the audio-visual enabled SmartTrack inhaler were 84 per cent compared to 30 per cent for the control group. This equals a 180 per cent increase in medication adherence.

• The use of emergency medication or the ‘blue’ inhaler was significantly reduced. The median percentage days on which a reliever was used in the intervention group was 9.5 per cent compared to 17.4 per cent in the control group. This equals a 45 per cent reduction in rescue medication use.

• Symptoms, wellbeing and quality of life for the children were significantly improved.

Clinical pharmacist Amy Chan, a doctoral student in the University of Auckland, is the lead author on the paper.

“We know one of the key reasons for children not taking their medication is parent and patient forgetfulness. The Smartinhaler reminder system is now clinically proven to be a real solution to the problem,” she says.

“What we’ve been able to establish for the first time with this study is that the ringtone Smartinhaler significantly improves adherence to preventative medication, which results in improved quality of life for children with asthma. It’s hugely exciting,” says Chan.

the users also experienced significant improvements to their symptoms, wellbeing and quality of life and needed their reliever medication less frequently.

Children in the study were also given a Smartinhaler tracker for their rescue or ‘blue’ inhaler to measure the amount of rescue medication they used. The device was able to objectively count date and time of rescue medication use. This provided a good indication of asthma being out of control.

When symptoms worsened, participants used their rescue reliever inhaler (blue inhaler), which is also known as a rescue medication because it provides immediate relief. Recent studies have shown that overuse of the blue inhaler is a predictor of worsening asthma and general morbidity.

The study found that use of the rescue medication was significantly reduced in the group using the Nexus6 Smartinhaler reminder device.

Laugh Lounge @ MashinaThe sound of uproarious laughter rang out from beneath the Christchurch

FOOD

Green beans and romesco sauceThis sauce is absolutely divine and is fabulous with freshly picked green beans, straight from the garden.

Ingredients2 Large ripe tomatoes, cut in half1 Red chilli, seeds removed1 Garlic clove, peeled200ml Olive oil1 Red capsicum, roasted, skin and seeds removed3 slices Ciabatta bread¼ cup Roasted hazelnuts, peeled and crushed

2 Tbsp Red wine vinegar350g Green beans, trimmed

DirectionsHeat oven to 180 deg C. To make romesco sauce, place tomatoes, chilli and garlic on a baking paper-lined oven tray and drizzle with 50ml olive oil. Roast for 10–15 minutes until vegetables are soft and just starting to colour. Remove from oven and place in a food processor with roasted capsicum. Blend until smooth. Lightly toast ciabatta, add half

to the vegetables and pulse to combine. Place sauce in a small stainless steel bowl, then mix in hazelnuts, remaining olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season to taste with a little salt and pepper, and set aside. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to the boil over a high heat. Add beans and blanch for 40–50 seconds. Remove beans from pot, drain and place in a serving bowl. Roughly tear remaining toasted ciabatta and scatter over beans be-fore topping with romesco sauce. Serve immediately.

Green vegetable salad with fetaFor a good dose of greens, you can’t go past this salad.

Ingredients2 bunches Asparagus300g Green beans150g Rocket1 Avocado1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper1 Lemon3 Tbsp Avocado oil

150g Feta

DirectionsCook asparagus and beans (both trimmed and halved) in boiling, salted water for 2 to 3 minutes, then drain and plunge into ice cold water to cool. Drain well. Arrange asparagus, beans and rocket in a serving bowl. Scatter with cubed avocado and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle all over with lemon juice and avocado oil, scatter with crumbled feta and serve.

Going greenGreen vegetable stir fry with sesame haloumi Serves 4The key is to not overcook the greens so they keep all their antioxidants. Adding a little water or stock when stir-frying allows the greens to steam and cook evenly.

Ingredients2 Tbsp Sesame oil, divided1 Garlic clove, finely chopped2 Zucchinis, sliced on the angle4 Baby bok choy, quartered lengthwise100g Snow peas½ head Broccoli, medium-sized, cut into florrets3 Silverbeet, leaves, shredded½ cup Water, or vegetable stock200g Haloumi cheese, sliced into thin strips

¼ cup Sesame seeds, toasted¼ cup Sweet chilli sauce3 Tbsp Soy sauce

DirectionsHeat the sesame oil in a wok or stir-fry pan and saute the garlic, zucchini, bok choy, snow peas and broccoli for 2-3 minutes until starting to colour. Add ½ cup water or stock and the silver-beet. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and tender. Add sweet chilli sauce and soy, and toss to coat the vegetables. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a shallow pan. Sprinkle the haloumi with sesame seeds, then fry for about 1-2 minutes each side until golden. Serve the greens, topped with a few slices of sesame haloumi.

A post-earthquake trades training programme for Maori has been hailed as a success by the programme’s founders.

He Toki ki te Rika (Maori trades training) was launched by Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu in partnership with CPIT and Hawkins in 2011 to train Maori, to help meet the skills shortage for the rebuild of Christchurch and to empower individuals and their families.

The initiative, which was launched in 2011, aims to train Maori for leadership positions in construction and offers apprenticeship support and further training through leadership programmes.

Another 213 learners completed the fee-free programme in 2014. At a recent celebration ceremony Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Kaiwhakahaere Tuarua, Lisa Tumahai acknowledged that their new qualifications were a first step in empowering them to make bold, confident choices for their future.

“Developing skills and leadership sits at the heart of all our He Toki programmes and although you may leave here today and start out on the end of a drill or a hammer, we want you to take up the challenge of working your way to the top – to becoming the foreman, the supervisor, the project manager or the company owner. The possibilities are endless.

Maori trades training at CPIT is delivering results

“All three partners have invested a lot of time and resource to ensure students achieve their aspirations. They have encouraged students to embrace their cultural identity and the values that come with that, and to carry those into the workplace to build relationships and a new future.”

Enrolments are open for 2015 for He Toki ki te Rika and He Toki ki te Mahi, a new leadership programme to support Maori leaders in Level 6 programmes in quantity surveying, construction management, site supervisors and architectural technology.

Whether you are starting out or upskilling, come and talk to us. Phone 0800 242 476, checkout www.hetoki.co.nz and find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/HeTokikiteRika.

Pasifika trade students help out

CPIT’s Pasifika Trades Training students have been putting their skills to good use, by helping to fix up damaged community

buildings throughout Christchurch. CPIT offers 100 Pasifika Trades Training

scholarships every year, helping students study subjects including painting, carpentry, furniture and joinery, general engineering and civil construction. The fees-free training programmes are part of a nation-wide initiative by the Government to get more Pasifika into trades training as well as assisting with the recovery of Christchurch.

This year, students have been involved in using their skills on a number of community projects. Among the projects was the plastering and painting of the damaged Samoan Efks Church Hall and fixing holes in the wall at the Shirley Assembly of God Church Kitchen. Further works are planned for 2015.

Centre for Maori and Pasifika Achievement manager, Harry Westrupp, says it is great to see students putting the skills they learnt in their course to make “a real difference to community projects”. “The community groups were very grateful. Many of these organisations didn’t have insurance and couldn’t afford to fix the damage.” he says.

At CPIT, the Pasifika Trades Training scheme is run in collaboration with leaders from the Pasifika community, government agencies with Pasifika church ministers playing a key role in nominating students for training and offering pastoral support. As well as learning industry relevant skills, Westrupp says the courses help students become the next generation of Pasifika leaders.

“We encourage all our students to step up and become active members of their communities,” he says. “This is just one of the ways we can show them how to do that.”

Pasifika trades training programmes are open entry and available for anyone of Pasifika descent. To learn more visit www.cpit.ac.nz , email [email protected] or phone (03) 940 8359.

It can be a little challenging keeping up with Mat Goodman’s projects. A graduate of CPIT’s Sustainability and Outdoor Education programme

and a talented lmmaker, he certainly has a few employment options to explore. If he’s not looking for keas in the Southern Alps or crows in New Caledonian ‘cloud forests’, then he’s lming relocated kiwis or more lately Hector’s dolphins in the Marlborough Sounds.

Actually, keas are not hard to nd. ey are highly inquisitive and love to play as Mat found out while lming a documentary produced by a German team that compared the intelligence of New Zealand’s kea and New Caledonia’s native crows (both species can problem solve and use tools to get to a reward – in this case, food).

e visuals of the birds and the landscapes are stunning, and the lm is both entertaining and informative. But behind the scenes, there is obviously a lot of work involved in reaching remote places and getting the right shot.

For Mat, an underlying motivation in helping to make these documentaries is to educate people about nature and sustainability. is motivation developed while he was studying at CPIT.

“ e programme certainly changes your lifestyle and allows you to be content with the way you are living,” he says.

Chasing kea and kiwi is a dream for CPIT

sustainability graduate

e Bachelor of Sustainability and Outdoor Education is unique in Australasia as the only outdoor education degree that includes sustainability as a major component. Students develop outdoor pursuits and education skills alongside environmental and sustainability leadership. ey graduate with an understanding of natural environments and how to help people appreciate these environments.

It is certainly a programme for our times with an emphasis on the sustainability of our planet. Graduates of the programme can be found leading outdoor adventures, teaching others and helping to implement sustainability projects as well developing their own projects.

CPIT graduate Mat Goodman’s work in sustainability and documentary making takes him around the world.

Head of nursing Dr Cathy Andrew says CPIT is one of the largest nursing schools in New Zealand and consistently has the highest

employment rates nationally. “With a CPIT Bachelor of Nursing degree,

you can go anywhere in the world and work as it is recognised internationally,” Andrew says. “You can work in a wide range of specialties, from mental health, to emergency, to geriatric, to community work.”

clinical nursing roles around the world, in the UK, Middle East, North America and Australia. Others are employed in health leadership and management nationally and internationally.

Dr Jane O’Malley, the chief nurse at the Ministry of Health, is a CPIT graduate. Jean O’Callaghan, another graduate and former chief executive of the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), is now chief executive of the Dorset County Hospital NHS Trust in the UK.

Closer to home, graduate Rekha Devi is a facilities manager at Cornwall Park Hospital in Auckland, while William Jones is a post anaesthetic care nurse for CDHB, and Olivia Sanders is a paediatric nurse at Christchurch Hospital and Rochelle Pereiro is a registered nurse at Pegasus Health in Christchurch.

Pererio says she learns something new everyday. “ ere are so many di erent jobs you can get with nursing,” she says. “If you like working with children, you can specialise in paediatrics or if you like research you can go into that area. I like that you’re not stuck in one thing.”

Or is your child having trouble deciding whether to learn the ute or the violin?

Choosing the right instrument can be daunting but the Christchurch School of Music (CSM) is once again holding its famous ‘Try an Instrument Day’ to help you decide.

Come along this Saturday to Catholic Cathedral College between 10am and 12pm where, no matter what your age, you can hear the instruments being played and have a go yourself with the help of our instrument specialists.

It’s important that you love the sound of the instrument you choose and that it is the right size and weight for you.

As well as providing tuition in most instruments, CSM o ers students the chance

‘Try an Instrument Day’ at the Christchurch

School of Music

to play in a wide range of ensembles, so come along to nd out more.

We also o er low-cost instrument hire (subject to availability) for string, woodwind and brass instruments. If a ordability is an issue, CSM can provide nancial support of up to 50 per cent through funding provided by the Canterbury Community Trust.

Visit www.csm.org.nz for contact details and more information about CSM.

Have you always wanted to play an instrument but don’t know what would suit you?

Aoraki Polytechnic’s hairdressing programme is a cut above the rest and gives its students the con dence and practical skills

they need to give themselves a foothold within the industry.

Second year student Jade Mason (28) heard about the polytechnic’s hairdressing course through a friend and decided to apply as it would give her the skills she needed to move into an industry which had always interested her.

Jade completed the polytechnic’s Certi cate in Hairdressing (Level 3) in 2013 and began her second year of training in 2014 through the polytechnic’s Certi cate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3).

During her second year of study, she began working at Tangles Hair Design on Saturdays and has earned herself a full-time job at the salon in 2015.

Jade said when she was not cutting, colouring or styling in the studio, she was kept busy as a mother to her three-year-old son.

With a little one to look a er at home, she believed a course suited her schedule better than an apprenticeship, which became part of her reason to enrol at Aoraki.

Jade said she loved the atmosphere of the course as it had “built up (her) con dence” to work on the necessary skills needed to ply her trade as a hairdresser.

“I’m very self-motivated to be here,” she said.

A footholdwithin the industry

Cut above: Aoraki Polytechnic second year hairdressing student Jade Mason (right) gained the confi dence and skills she needed at the polytechnic to fi nd employment for 2015.

“I’m veryself-motivatedto be here.”

Sun catcher - view fi nder

Just over a year ago, my clients were thrilled and relieved to secure this spacious modern home on the sought a er mid-slopes of Mt Pleasant, allowing

them time out from EQ repairs and to regroup. With their family home repaired ahead of schedule, they are now committed to selling.

While their tenure has been relatively brief they have enjoyed this private, sheltered suntrap and have stamped their mark on the home, taking the property from good to great.

e home now presents like new and boasts a stylish new kitchen and appliances along with a renovated family bathroom. From the newly clad exterior to the fresh welcoming décor, the home has been revitalised throughout o ering buyers the opportunity to purchase stress-free this tasteful, low-maintenance home.

With generous living/dining that opens and extends to a covered north/west outdoor entertaining area and with an overall oor plan designed for functional easy-care living, the home is ideal for empty-nesters, busy professionals or couples. All three bedrooms are very large doubles, with the master o ering a walk-in robe and en suite. e large storage shed means there is room to house all the toys also. is superb spot on the hill soaks in expansive day and night views from across the city through to the majestic Southern Alps.

New owners will enjoy the bene ts of under -tile heating, three heat pumps for year-round

comfort and internal garaging to name a few. e home is ready and waiting for the new owners to just move in, relax and enjoy.

Open Home dates: 1pm to 1.45pm, Saturday, January 24; Sunday, January 25 and Sunday, February 1.

See you at the Open Days. For a private viewing or more information, contact Deb Beesley of Harcourts Grenadier Ferrymead (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 384 7950 or on mobile 027 280 8837.
