City councillor Phil Clearwater has warned city councillors could burn out if the city council is not expand-ed.

He is one of several city council-lors who would like to see the city divided into smaller wards, and extra city councillors appointed to represent them.

The idea will be looked at in a city council representation review.

Cr Clearwater said he would need to hear the views of residents on the plan before he could fully support the plan.

But he believed it was essential that smaller wards were looked at.

“Especially because the council

is involved in earthquake recovery work, there is a huge amount of work now for councillors, and basi-cally we need more councillors to spread the load.

“I know that council-lors at the moment are working huge hours, and although we can also find more efficient ways to do that, it is essential that council-lors are not burnt out so that we are able to have that involvement in the community.”

But fellow Spreydon-Heathcote Ward councillor Tim Scandrett said he did not think the community would support the plan.

“I don’t think the ratepayers

would like a bigger council, be-cause obviously it would mean they would be paying for more council-lors. But I would like to hear back from them.”

He believed more discussion of the plan was needed.

“I think we’re used to what we’ve got, so it is diffi-

cult to look at it objectively. With any ward there is a quite a variance in what you cover, which makes it a challenge to represent the whole ward fairly. But I think it does work well as it is.”

Fendalton-Waimairi ward coun-cillor Jamie Gough said he was wor-

ried by the plan.“A decade ago there were 24

councillors around the table, and I don’t know how they got anything done. So I think returning to that would be a terrible idea, an abomi-nation – it would be death by red tape and bureaucrats.

“Admittedly we’re the second largest city in the country and you do need representation, but it’s tough enough already with fourteen of us around the table.”

All city councils need to review how their communities are repre-sented at least once every six years.

The review was postponed in 2011 due to the earthquakes, but must be completed by August next year.

The newly-formed Bowen-vale Neighbourhood Network will meet for the first timetonight.

The group has been formed under the umbrella of the Bowenvale Neighbourhood Network, to help people in Bowenvale connect with their neighbours.

Resident of the area, Sue Al-exander, said many people in

the area were facing home re-pairs, and issues with rockfalls or their land.

She said that made neigh-bourhood links particularly im-portant.

“The earthquake has shown how important it is that we know our neighbours and have a way to communicate, just so we have a way to give informa-tion or get information about these types of issues.”

She hoped it would also help

to build the sense of commu-nity in the area.

If there was a good turnout at the meeting, she said they hoped to hold a neighbourhood barbecue later this year.

Cashmere Residents Associa-tion chairman Rik Tindall and Dave Wilkinson of Canterbury Neighbourhood Support will speak at the meeting, which will run from 7.15pm at the Beckenham Service Centre on Colombo St.

Cashmere residents hope a planned mountain bike park in the Port Hills will keep problem people off private property.

The park is planned on private-ly-owned land off Worsleys Rd, which is currently used for for-estry.

However, residents have report-ed people camping, using drugs, driving, biking and hiking on the land, as well as people hunting there.

Bert Govan, director of McVicar Holdings which owns the land, said there was potential for a trag-edy there.

“There is potential when there are so many activities there which are not monitored. As a regis-tered forest there aren’t staff there all the time, so we can’t moni-tor it.”

He said that there was also a lot

of damage to fences and trees be-ing caused, mostly through people using four-wheel-drive vehicles on the land.

The company plans to lease the land to international adventure park developers Select Evolution for a mountain bike park.

They plan to build more than

120km of bike trails on the land, as well as a chairlift and adventure activities like zip lines and rock climbing.

The have not yet been approved by the city council, but a $2 mil-lion government grant has been pledged for the project.

Residents association chairman

Rik Tindall described the current use of the land as chaotic.

“At the moment it is a bit of a free for all up there. I think a lot of people are assuming it is public land, and it isn’t.”

He believed there would be bet-ter regulation of the land if the plan went ahead.

He said most residents were very positive about the plan.

“We’re on board because of its benefit to the city and the wide-spread interest in cycling in the city, and because of the commer-cial draw provide for tourists.”

He said his only concern was around increased traffic in the area, on roads which were not de-signed for high traffic volumes.

That will be looked at by the city council before they approve the adventure park plan, which is cur-rently open for submissions.

Submissions on the plan will close on Friday.

Dangerous driving and crashes near The Tannery have forced the city council to change Cum-nor Tce to one-way.

The city council voted on Thursday to the street one-way heading northward, and make the street exit to Garlands Rd left-turn only.

But when that will happen is not yet known. The New Zealand Transport Agency will need to approve plans because Garlands Rd is a state highway.

The Tannery property manag-er Grant McIver has welcomed the change.

“It’s probably a daily occur-rence here, so we definitely think this will be a good thing,” he said of the crashes.

The street is used regularly by truck drivers as a shortcut from Garlands Rd to the Hillsborough industrial area.

Mr McIver said that caused regular problems, as the street was too narrow for them to pass each other.

“You’re not going to have that issue of two trucks meeting in the middle and having to back all the way down the street, which was obviously a disaster waiting to happen.”

There have also been three crashes recorded on the street since 2011 involving vehicles turn-ing right onto Garlands Rd, as well as many reported near-misses.

The Tannery has expanded since the earthquakes, and now includes more than 50 business-es.

A city council report blamed increased traffic numbers since the development of the shopping complex for the growing con-gestion and safety issues on the street.

Mr McIver said the inter-section was dangerous for cus-tomers.

“Making the right hand turn out of the street was dangerous as a lot of people couldn’t see what was coming over the bridge.”

Options for cycleways, bus hubs and a pedestrian bridge across the river will also be looked at.

City councillor Yani Johanson said a report on wider improve-ments to the area was needed.

“I think it’s important to signal that we want to support positive

things happening in this area, that we do need to have a bit more of a high level look at it, because this whole roading cor-ridor is really really critical, and the river corridor is critical too.”

The Tannery owner Alasdair Cassels has told the Southern View he would be willing to con-tribute financially to river im-provements in the area, which could include a wharf and foot-bridge across the river.

Cumnor Tce is set to become a one way street with only left hand turns allowed onto Garlands Rd, after three recorded crashes at the intersection. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Age Concern volunteers getAfter years of service in their communities, 19 “older but ex-ceptional” Age Concern Canter-bury volunteers have been rec-ognised for their work.

They were presented with awards for their service at the Papanui RSA last Friday. This is what was said about the work of some of the local volunteers.Maxwell Sword – Spreydon

Since the late 1980s Max has been a volunteer in the Police Ki-osk (then in Cathedral Square). He has also volunteered as a crime camera operator and front counter receptionist at the dis-trict headquarters. Max gives up numerous hours of time in these voluntary roles where he inter-acts with members of the public, at times when those people are distressed. He interacts in a very professional and engaging way that supports police by provid-ing either a welcoming or watch-ing role over members of the wider Canterbury community. Max has provided consistent and dedicated service to the commu-nity as a person who genuinely cares about our community and its functioning.Maureen (Topsy) Rule – Heath-cote

Topsy has been an Off The Wall volunteer with the city council’s graffiti programme since 2007. Off the Wall is a volunteer-based graffiti removal programme. Topsy has removed countless acts of graffiti vandal-ism from within her community.

She has also been responsible for contacting the many neces-sary agencies for removing graf-fiti that falls out of her area of responsibility. Prior to the city council graffiti programme be-ing established, Topsy was seen in Sumner cleaning up graffiti plus rubbish. Topsy’s pride and passion and wealth of historical information for the Redcliffs/Summer community in which she lives, has made her a well-known identity. With her late husband she established the Sumner Museum and follow-

ing the earthquakes all the items were removed delicately to an-other home. The Sumner mu-seum would not have the items if it wasn’t for the commitment and passion of the Rule fam-ily. Notwithstanding her own post-earthquake property and displacement concerns Topsy continues to be an incredibly community minded person and plays a significant role in the city council’s goal of “reducing the impact that graffiti vandalism has on the residents of Christ-church city.”

Ian Weir – HalswellIan has been volunteering as

a mini-bus driver for Age Con-cern Canterbury for 14 years. Ian drives every week collects up to nine people and will take them for a drive, with humour and sto-ries to tell. His concern for those that he takes out is shown by his empathy and sharing of Age Concern information. Regularly seen gathering Life Tubes from the storage box at Age Concern Canterbury, where he explains to those who he gives them to, the importance of a having a Life Tube.

EXCEPTIONAL: The Age Concern volunteers acknowledged for their work. Age Concern Canterbury often gets calls the next day to say what a wonderful time the clients had and how they have enjoyed lan’s company. Until recently Ian and his wife, Stella, have also hosted groups at their own home on a regular basis. They have received numerous Community Gar-den Pride Awards over the years for their beautiful gardens. He and Stella help with the delivery of Age Concern Canterbury’s Keeping On magazine every three months, taking almost a full day at a time. Ian re-ceived a community board Community Service Award in 2008 from the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board, and he is also a member of the Centaurus Branch of Pro-bus.Pam Harris

Pam came to New Zealand in 1999 hav-ing volunteered and then worked in paid work for a local community organisation in the United Kingdom. Pam has been vol-unteering at Age Concern Canterbury for 14 years, working either on reception or as a client liaison. In the liaison role Pam works as a bridge between Age Concern and the individual who is often quite lonely and vulnerable. She has a patient and kind manner and does a great job phoning and speaking with them at length, and ensures that they have ongoing support.Elsie Hartley

Elsie has been a volunteer visitor for Age Concern Canterbury’s Accredited Visiting Service since 2001 and has made more than 400 visits. She has become good friends with her clients and they have seen her as an extended family member. Elsie’s quiet personality and empathy has been at work throughout her 13 years of AVS service for Age Concern Canterbury. Her commitment and attendance at the Age Concern monthly meetings is outstanding

and Elsie has gone the extra mile to attend courses and meetings, to share the infor-mation that she learns with her clients.Jan Ogilvie

Jan has been a reception volunteer at Age Concern Canterbury for 19 years. We thoroughly enjoy her company and the many tales she has to tell. Jan volunteers on a Tuesday morning and a Wednesday afternoon on reception and puts her hand up for more to help us out. She is always helpful and friendly to those at the desk or on the end of the phone and with her broad historical knowledge of our services, knows exactly where to refer the caller for help.

Demolition of the remaining section of St Mar-tins Voluntary Library began on Wednesday.

The library on the corner of Wilsons Rd and Wades Ave was badly damaged in the earth-quakes, with the majority of it demolished under a Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Au-thority notice.

The city council approved demolition of the remaining third of the facility last year.

Funding for a replacement community centre on the site of the former library was approved this month as part of the city council $40 mil-lion facilities repair and rebuild programme.

Community facilities rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said the new community centre would incorporate the voluntary library.

“The voluntary library was highly valued by the St Martins and Opawa communities, so be-ing able to integrate this service into the new centre is fantastic.

“The demolition has been authorised to pro-ceed and this is scheduled to take three weeks. We will be recycling material from the demoli-tion wherever possible.”

REPLACEMENT: The St Martins Voluntary Library building was badly damaged in the earthquakes.

Four years on from the Septem-ber earthquake, there are new residents moving in to the red zone.

Native pukeko, bellbird and kereru are just some of the birds making their homes in red zone areas, while there have been recent sightings of rare kooka-burra, ibis and bittern in the area.

There are no complaints from the new residents about the state of roads, housing or insur-ance, but local bird experts are concerned they may face bigger problems.

Graham Evans of the Christ-church Bird Club said predators, like feral cats, rats and possums, were also moving into the area.

“One of our concerns is that feral cats and rats could be a threat to the birds as they move in, and their numbers could in-crease just as quickly. Measures need to be looked at to keep those predators away from birds that are moving in, especially when they are vulnerable.”

He said that birds were particularly vulnerable when they were nesting in spring, or moulting in late summer.

“The concern is that if some-thing isn’t done there could be a lot of natives killed by these predators.”

Niall Mugan, founder of the

Birds of Christchurch bird-watching site, agreed.

He said if efforts weren’t made to preserve the habitat for the birds, they could disappear as quickly as they arrived.

“There have been birds seen in the red zone that hadn’t been seen for a long time. Birds are very quick to take up homes, but once the rebuild starts we are likely to lose them again.”

He said that similar things had been seen in other cities after disasters.

“I’ve been told about times after the war, when London was flattened, and some very rare birds came and nested in the rubble.”

He said most rare birds were endangered because of lack of

habitat, and believed setting aside space for a reserve could make a difference.

But he said that the first step towards creating a sanctuary would be identifying which birds were in the area.

The Avon-Otakaro Network, a group formed after the earthquake to look at issues around the river and red zone, has already developed plans for a bird sanctuary.

The group would like to build a pred-ator proof fence around the Travis Wetland and part of the Burwood red

zone, which would be open to the public and could include an education centre.

They estimate the cost of the project at about $7 million, with the fence alone priced at about $200,000 per kilometre.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority recently released a report which recom-mended grassing the red zone and grazing sheep on it, as the cheapest way to maintain it.

But growing grass on the cleared red zone land has been costed at about $7.5 million, and concerns have been raised about dog attacks and rustling if sheep were grazed in the city.

More information on the bird sanctuary project can be found at www.avonotakaronetwork.co.nz, or www.evospace.co.nz.

Bird sightings in the area can be reported at www.birdsof-christchurch.co.nz.

Helping you rejoin theconversation

Are you missing out on the conversation at restaurants or family gatherings?

Can’t hear your grandchildren? Is your family complaining you can’t hear? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to get

your hearing checked.Gordon & Till Audiology are here to

help to you enjoy life again by improving your hearing. They offer hearing tests for adults and children over five, hearing aid consultations including selection, fittings and counselling, assessment and management of

tinnitus (persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears) and advice on protecting your hearing.

Gordon & Till Audiology is a friendly, independent hearing clinic owned by Carolyn Gordon and Carolyn Till, handily located in Edgeware, Christchurch. The two audiologists have a combined experience of over 30 years. They have no financial links with any of the hearing aid companies that supply their products. This means that they are free to choose the best hearing solution

for you without financial influence. Carolyn Gordon has a special interest

in tinnitus (noises in the ears/head) and is trained in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Those who experience bothersome tinnitus can be helped by this effective technique. Management of tinnitus takes time and involves sound therapy, counselling and sometimes amplification over a period of time.

Both Carolyns strongly believe in the importance of hearing and say any loss of hearing should not be ignored. As hearing loss usually occurs slowly, people are often unaware of the problem. Family members often notice first. Untreated hearing loss is also linked to a higher incidence of health problems such as dementia, brain volume loss and also higher hospitalisation rates than for those with normal hearing later in life.

Loss of hearing can affect the ability of working people to do their jobs and in some occupations, jeopardise safety. Due to the recent increase in ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) funding, people with a work noise history, who are eligible for ACC, can get an increased contribution towards hearing aids - some models may even be free. So, if you have a history of work noise exposure or are an existing ACC client, call Gordon & Till Audiology to arrange an appointment to have a free initial consultation.

The audiologists encourage anyone with concerns about their hearing or tinnitus to make an appointment, phone 385 6036. Gordon & Till Audiology is located at 701 Barbadoes Street, near Warrington St. It is on the M and No. 44 bus routes and there is off-street parking. Hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or after hours by arrangement.

A simple kumara rosti

Ingredients1 Kumara1 tsp Salt1 tsp Coconut oil

DirectionsPeel and grate the kumara and mix through the salt. Cover and leave to sit for 15-20 minutes.

When ready to cook, take handfuls of the

mixture and squeeze out as much liquid as you can (the more the better to prevent soggy rosti).

Place the squeezed kumara in another bowl and mix through a little pepper.

Heat some coconut oil in a frying pan to a medium heat. Form the kumara into flat rounds and fry until golden on both sides. You want your rosti cooked through, so ensure your pan is not too hot.

Season with salt to taste and top with a fried steak, fillet of fish or egg.

Mushrooms in mustard sauceServes 4 This unusual salad or hors-d’oeuvre is easy to make and brings out the best in a mushroom. The longer you marinate them, the softer and juicier they become.

Ingredients3 Tbsp Dijon mustard1 clove Garlic, mashed with ½ tsp salt1 Tbsp White wine vinegar1 Lemon, freshly juiced3 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil2 Tbsp Walnut oil500g Mushrooms, we used brown, white button, and portobello1 Lemon, freshly zested1 handful Chervil, or parsley leaves

DirectionsFor the sauce, to a screw top jar add dijon mustard, garlic, white wine vinegar, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil and

lots of freshly ground black pepper. Shake like mad to emulsify into a dressing.

To marinate, brush off any loose dirt from the mushrooms using your fingers, that’s what they’re for after all! Using a sharp knife, finely slice into a large mixing bowl. Pour the sauce over the mushrooms, toss well and leave to marinate for 1-3 hours.

To serve, toss through lemon zest and chervil (or parsley) leaves. Taste and season accordingly.

GARDENING

Treat taste buds with mizunaMizuna is a wonderful herb and salad green. It is also known as japanese greens.

The fine leaves are a decorative, light green, with deeply jagged leaves.

Mizuna has a mild mustard flavour. Ideal for salad mixes. Varieties

There are two main types of mi-zuna – red and green. Green is the most common and widely grown in New Zealand.

You will find the red-leafed variety in pots in the herb section of your garden centre. If you can’t find it ask for it by name and the garden centre should be able to order it in for you. When, where and how to plant

Mizuna will happily grow all year round. Constant moisture and fertile soil with a good mix of drainage is essential. If you let your mizuna dry out it will quickly go to seed. Growing guide

Prepare the soil well by adding lots of well rotted manure or com-post. Soil should be well drained.

Plant seedlings out 30cm apart all year round. Sow seeds 5cm deep in a fine seed mix and water sparingly.

Once germinated and developed

to leaves, transplant them into larger trays or put them straight into the garden Spring, summer and autumn sowings will ensure a constant supply of mizuna for the table.

Mizuna takes approx four to six weeks to grow. Harvest

Gently pick leaves of the plant constantly. Slice off 5cm above ground level to encourage a fresh new crop.

KEEP MOIST: Mizuna will grow all year round in fertile soil.

Don’t ignore thymeThyme is a traditional Medi-terranean herb with a long history.

Its therapeutic qualities have been valued for millen-nia (for example, the ancient Egyptians used thyme for embalming and soldiers on the World War 1 battlefields treated their wounds with thyme) and its familiar ‘herby’ flavour ensures its place as an ongoing culinary favourite.

While most of us grow thyme as a seedling purchased from the garden centre. It can be grown easily – if a little slowly – from seed and is tough and drought hardy once estab-lished. Too much of the good life will have a detrimental effect on thyme.

Not only do the plants tend to collapse during periods of high humidity, but an abundance of water and fer-tiliser reduces the strength of thyme’s valuable natural oils.

Sow thyme seeds either direct where the plants are to grow in the garden, or into pots filled with welldrained potting mix.

In cold climates it’s a good idea to keep the young plants somewhere sheltered for the

first winter. Garden thyme needs a

sunny spot with good drain-age and seems happiest in a raised-up bed where it can bake in the sunshine.

Fertilising requirements are minimal but, as with most other Mediterranean herbs, thyme appreciates an

occasional side sprinkling with lime or dolomite, especially in areas with higher rainfall.

Extra plants can go in as com-

panions in the veggie patch, where they’ll deter many of the common insect pests.

Thyme leaves have a strong taste, so only the smallest amount is needed to add flavour in the kitchen.

But if you’ve only ever used the dried thyme that comes in a jar from the supermar-ket, you’ll find that freshly-harvested thyme is a culinary delight.

Pots of thyme will grow happily on a sunny indoor windowsill but the catch here is that, because they’re so easy to harvest, the plants may end up almost denuded, so it’s a good idea to sow and plant up some more pots to have as backups.

Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to

talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatts of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer.

Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate-controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as

effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy and hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump cleaned. We, at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

Masport offers a wide range of compliant clean air fires. Why buy a Masport wood fire?

• Wood fires are energy efficient and designed to heat your whole home.

• A wood fire has multiple functions, apart from warming your home they can be used for water heating and cooking, making it a smart solution if the power goes out.

• Masport wood fires are made in New Zealand, enabling operational spare parts to be made available for purchase up to 15 years from the last date of manufacture.

• Wood is cost-effective, making it the cheapest form of heating, and as wood is a renewable energy source it is a sound environmental choice.South Island Hardware has an extensive

range of freestanding and built-in wood fire solutions for you, clean air fires that meet the Ministry for the Environment and Environment Canterbury standards, rural fires for properties situated on two hectares or more. Trust South Island Hardware to keep you warm throughout the year.

South Island Hardware has been making homes warm and cosy for many years.

*All new wood burners must meet the emission standards set by the Ministry for the Environment and Environment Canterbury.

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your

individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.
