WELCOME

WELCOME TO OUR SEVENTH ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC IN PERTHWhether you’re a veteran of multiple Southern Frieds or joining us for the first time, we’re sure you will find plenty to enjoy in this year’s programme.

The song is at the heart of the many genres that shelter under the Southern Fried umbrella and we’re delighted to present some of the very finest songwriters on the planet, most notably in our three headliners, but also in the host of guest acts, support gigs, late night performances and free shows we have lined up.

With Perth Theatre currently closed for restoration and redevelopment, the Salutation Hotel, a favourite after show haunt with Southern Fried acts, has stepped in to host Saturday and Sunday afternoon concerts as well as the iconic Late and Southern Fried shows and new late night Songwriters’ Snug. With its relaxed, intimate atmosphere, we’re very excited to bring ‘The Sally’ on board as a core venue and we are sure it will be a popular choice with performers and audiences.

This year we are taking it outside for the first time with a free outdoor stage at Perth Concert Hall featuring some of Scotland’s many great Americana artists.

We’ve acted on your feedback and reintroduced more workshops and talks this year including the opportunity to appear on stage with Southern Fried Voices. Our fantastic selection of authentic soul food and drink will be on offer across the weekend once again so come early and come hungry!

THRUM Hailed as the new Emmylou Harris and described as one of the ‘greatest ever voices to come out of Scotland’ by Gary Lightbody, Monica Queen has sung for massive crowds with Snow Patrol and Belle and Sebastian and collaborated with The Jayhawks, Grant Lee Buffalo and Shane MacGowan. Her own music as part of the acclaimed Crazy Horse-inspired band Thrum and on her solo records is anchored by the melancholic electronica, soaring guitar and genius production of her longtime collaborator Johnny Smillie.

‘hearing Queen's mighty voice unfettered and Smillie's equally blistering Neil Young-esque guitar solos once more feels like reconnecting with an old friend’ The Scotsman

STAR WHEEL PRESSHaving burst onto the scene with the extraordinary Life Cycle Of A Falling Bird in 2011, Aberfeldy’s Star Wheel Press have just released their first new material since then to rave reviews.

‘some of the best Americana you'll hear this year comes from deep in the heart of Perthshire. Like Bon Iver, Bill Callahan and Willard Grant Conspiracy, Aberfeldy's Star Wheel Press favour a melancholic muse, where the sourness of disappointment is sweetened by the ache of the melody’ The Herald

Arguably one of America’s greatest ever songwriters, his body of work stands comparison with any artist of the last century in its depth, breadth, variety, and emotional and political fearlessness.

GOSPEL BRUNCHThis deep southern celebration of spirituality, food and music will see performances by festival guests and our very own Southern Fried Voices. It's followed by a very special menu of authentic southern and soul food featuring shrimp 'n' grits, fried green tomatoes and much, much more.

Canadian soul singer Cyndi Cain started singing in the church at the age of 3 and is steeped in the gospel tradition. She’ll lead our specially convened community choir, Southern Fried Voices as well as performing a short set with her band while singer-songwriters Gabriel Kelley and Marc Ford each offer their own selection of spiritual songs.
