    The former harbour and industrial area ofRuoholahti has been transformed in thepast decades into a residential district. Itis home to the largest cultural centre inFinland, Kaapelitehdas, which was oncea factory producing telephone and elec-trical cables. Today it houses museums,galleries, dance theatres and art schools.

    Suomenlinna

    Suomenlinna is one of the worlds largesthistorical maritime fortresses and hometo 850 city residents. With its museums,

    restaurants and events, the islands ofSuomenlinna offer a unique experiencefor visitors of all ages throughout theyear. Suomenlinna has been a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site since 1991. The15-minute ferry crossing to the fortressoffers you a unique chance to admire andphotograph Helsinki from the sea.

    Seurasaari

    Seurasaari is a popular museum islandand recreational area located 15 minutesby bus from the city centre. The woodenbuildings at the Open-Air Museum rep-resent Finnish building traditions fromthe 18th to the 20th centuries.     Kaivopuisto & nearby islands

    Kaivopuisto is Helsinkis oldest and mostpopular park, as well as a prestigious em-bassy district. The proximity of the sea,the rocky cliffs and the green lawns offermany opportunities to relax and enjoythe outdoors. Along the shore and onthe nearby islands you can nd several

    Haltiala

    The Haltiala area is the largest single

    Helsinki has around 1100 restaurantswhere you will nd everything from

    SEEThe Spa Park

    The beautiful old wooden villas inthe Spa Park were built at the end of1800s. The villas, designed by well-known architects, represent a decora-tive wooden architecture. Some of thebuildings still serve as guest houses

    and restaurants. The spa building wasdamaged during the ContinuationWar and was pulled down.

    Emigration memories

    During the years 18801930, nearly250,000 Finns and Russians emigrat-ed to America, Canada or Australia viaHanko.

    War memories

    The cape of Hanko was rented to theSoviet Union as a naval base underthe peace treaty of Moscow (1940),which ended the Winter War. TheSoviet Union brought a garrison of

    30,000 men to Hanko. There are stillruins of fortifications in the centre ofthe town.

    Nature

    Nature in Hanko is incredibly varieddue to the temperate climate and thegeographic location. The landscapeis characterized by magnificent cliffsand unspoilt stretches of fine whitesand, sheltered bays, and beautifulmeadows.

    RnnsIn Rnns, some 30 km west of the centreof Loviisa, there is the Rnns Archipel-ago Museum which presents the historyof the archipelago in the Loviisa region.It is open from June to August daily.     The sea and the archipelago

    Maritime Hamina can be experiencedclose to the city centre. Tervasaari sea-side area features a beach, a museumship, restaurants and a guest harbourwith services. The islands off the coastof Hamina are quiet, peaceful havensstudded with pretty little harbours.A regular boat service operates in Juneand July from Tervasaari to Tammio andUlko-Tammio, which is a part of the East-ern Gulf of Finland National Park.

    Learn about Haminas history and thefortresss unusual ora on the Rampart

    The Kirkkojrvi Nature Trail

    The trail round Lake Kirkkojrvi beginsclose to the town centre and takes ina nature conservation area. Along thetrail are boards telling about the areas

    natural features and a bird tower. Trailis suitable for hikers and bikers. Specialfeatures: protected bird water area,wetland unusually rich in species.
