Southern Cross Soloists open 2018 in the spirit of reinvention, as we reimagine works by classical music greats Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Ravel.
From Tchaikovsky’s Mozart-inspired Rococo Variations featuring new Southern Cross Soloists cello soloist Meta Weiss, to Stravinsky’s baroque-inspired Pulcinella Suite, and a refreshed version of Matthew Hindson’s rock and roll oboe piece Rush in honour of his 50th birthday, this concert will be a smorgasbord of musical delights, finishing with Ravel’s quirky and whirling tribute to the Viennese waltz, with La Valse.
A not to be missed highlight will be the world premiere of leading composer, and ABC broadcaster Julian Day’s mesmerizing new immersive work for Southern Cross Soloists, Resound: Above and Beyond.

Southern Cross Soloists are delighted to introduce Australian audiences to Miroslav Petkov, Principal Trumpet of the elite world orchestra, The Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
Described as having ‘the eloquence of a great storyteller’ by the New York papers, Miroslav is one of the most dynamic trumpet soloists of today, and joins the Soloists for a thrilling program of brilliance and flair.
Beginning with the precipitous virtuosity of the piccolo trumpet in Bach’s second Brandenburg concerto, we take you on a journey of emotion through Copland’s melancholic Quiet City, and Prokofiev’s passionate Romeo and Juliet suites. Bulgarian composer Georgii Cherkin’s foot-stamping Sevdana and Bulgarian Dance will lead into our tribute to the great Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary, with Hindson’s Homage to Bernstein, and Bernstein’s own West Side Story.

Margaret Schindler Vocal Scholarship As a founding member of Southern Cross Soloists, Margaret Schindler was an integral part of the ensemble for 21 years. In honour of Margaret’s outstanding contribution to the Company and music education, Southern Cross Soloists has established the Margaret Schindler Vocal Scholarship to provide mentoring, professional development and performance opportunities to emerging singers. Under the expert tutelage of Margaret Schindler, one of Australia’s foremost vocal pedagogues, the scholarship aims to bridge the gap between tertiary study and a professional career.

Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists since 2011, Tania Frazer completed her degrees at the Guildhall School of Music in London on full scholarship. Tania has performed as Principal Oboe with the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra under Maazel, Rostropovich and Solti; the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and Valery Gergiev; the Royal Scottish National Orchestra; the New Zealand Symphony; the Jerusalem Symphony; Stavanger Symphony in Norway; the Montreal Chamber Orchestra and was Principal Cor Anglais of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. From 2004-2008, Tania was Principal Oboe with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and performed as a soloist on their 2006 European tour. As Southern Cross Soloists’ Artistic Director, Tania has been the Musical Director of many productions including The Red Shoes and The Host with Expressions Dance Company and Invisible Me for QPAC’s 2012 Out of the Box and in 2015 performed as a guest soloist with the Daejeon Philharmonic in Korea.

Born in the Bulgarian port city of Varna in 1989, Miroslav Petkov started playing the trumpet at the age of 11. Barely a month later, he was accepted to the Dobri Hristov National Academy of the Arts and later went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold under trumpet virtuoso Max Sommerhalder.
Since his first appearance as a soloist at the age of 14 with the Varna Symphony Orchestra, Miroslav has become a leading classical music trumpet soloist who also enjoys performing in a variety of musical genres including folk music and jazz, as a way to broaden his thinking and understanding of all music.
Before joining the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in August 2016, Petkov held the role of Principal Trumpet of the Nationaltheater Mannheim for several years. He has also given guest performances as principal trumpet player with the Ensemble Modern, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the NDR Symphony Orchestra.
Petkov’s further successes include winning first prize at many international trumpet competitions, including; Lieksa International Trumpet Competition in Finland, the 21st International Competition Città di Porcia in Italy, the 6th International Jeju Brass Competition in South Korea, and the YAMAHA International Trumpet Contest in Germany.

24 year old Australian pianist Alex Raineri described by Limelight Magazine as “a soloist of superb skill and musicality” is a sought after recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. International performances include tours of California, South-East Asia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Germany and Austria. Alex regularly broadcasts on ABC Classic FM and the MBS Networks and has performed concertos with the Queensland, Tasmanian, Darwin and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, Orchestra Victoria, Four Winds Festival, Bangalow Festival and the Queensland Pops Orchestra.
Alex has won a number of major competitions including the Kerikeri International Piano Competition, Australian National Piano Award, ANAM Concerto Competition, Michael Kieran Harvey Scholarship and others. Chamber partnerships include performances with Andreas Ottensamer, Sara Macliver, Natalie Clein, Greta Bradman, Kathryn Stott, Slava Grigoryan, Brett Dean, Opera Queensland and Expressions Dance Company. Alex is a fellow of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and is presently undertaking doctorate studies at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

Ysolt Clark studied at the Canberra School Of Music and was appointed Principal Third Horn with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 21. After holding that position for eight years, Ysolt has since dedicated her time to pursuing her passion for both music education and chamber music performance. She has recorded and performed with renowned contemporary music ensemble ELISION, is a member of the Lunaire Collective, performs often with Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, and teaches at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University where she directed the horn ensemble QHorns in their international prize winning performance in Memphis in 2013. She has performed with most of the major Australian orchestras, most recently the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony and West Australian Symphony Orchestra as well as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Ashley SmithClarinet
Described as “incandescent... a masterly display of skill and insight... as an apologist for contemporary music-making, you would search hard to find this young clarinettist’s equal” (The Age), clarinettist Ashley William Smith is an internationally demanded clarinet soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. A graduate of Yale University and the Australian National Academy of Music, Ashley is a laureate of numerous prestigious prizes including the APRA Performance of the Year (for Lachlan Skipworth’s Clarinet Concerto with the WASO), the Freedman Fellowship, an ABC Symphony International Young Performer Award, and a Churchill Fellowship. Ashley is also a Buffet-Crampon Artist.
Ashley has performed throughout Australia, the USA, Europe and Asia with Bang on a Can, the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Northwest, the Kennedy Center, the Beijing Modern Music Festival, and IRCAM.
Ashley is an Assistant Professor at the University of Western Australia where he is the Head of Winds and Contemporary Performance.
Alan Smith completed postgraduate studies at the Robert Schumann Institute in Dusseldorf. He has had extensive experience as a Concertmaster, both within Australia and overseas, and has been a soloist with the Adelaide, Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras as well as appearing in various chamber music ensembles in Australia and Europe.
Alan teaches part-time at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and is also a regular tutor for the Conservatorium orchestras as well as the Queensland Youth Symphony. He plays a violin made by Jose Contreras in 1770.

Meta WeissAssociate Artist / Cello
US cellist Meta Weiss (pronounced may-ta) made her international debut at the age of seven in Holland, and has become one of the leading cellists of her generation. An acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, Meta has performed throughout the US and internationally, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Melbourne Recital Centre.
Meta has won numerous competitions including the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, Washington International Competition, Schadt Cello Competition, and Yamaha’s Young Performing Artist Award. Her album Entendre won the Violoncello Foundation Listener’s Choice Award. Other albums include A Dué Celli, recorded with cellist David Requiro as the Weiss-Requiro Duo, and a forthcoming album with the Streeton Trio on the Decca Label.
Weiss studied at Rice University, and Juilliard in New York. She is Senior Lecturer in Cello and Head of Chamber Music at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Weiss performs on a Gioffredo Cappa cello, c. 1690.

Lina Andonovska leads a diverse career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, collaborator and educator. Quickly gaining recognition internationally as a fearless and versatile artist, she has collaborated and performed with Crash Ensemble, Australian Chamber Orchestra, s t a r g a z e, Southern Cross Soloists and eighth blackbird. She is critically acclaimed for her interpretation of new music, Rolling Stone Magazine hailed her performance of Bun-Ching Lam’s piccolo concertino at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival at Mass MoCA as “superbly played...”
Recent performance credits include the German premiere of Dean’s flute concerto Siduri Dances with the Deutsches Kammerorchester, recitals at the Tokyo Experimental Festival, and guest appearances with s t a r g a z e across Germany. In the 2017/2018 season, she will be joining the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and Southern Cross Soloists (AU) as Guest Principal Flautist.
John Rotar started piano at the age of six and composition at the age of nine. When he was 12, John had his first orchestral work performed by the Bundaberg Youth Orchestra. Since then, John has won a variety of awards including the 2013 Queensland Wagner Society National Composition Prize, the 2014 Fanfare Artology Prize, the 2015 Percy Briar Memorial Prize, and the 2016 Jean Bogan Youth Prize. John has been commissioned to write new works for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Southern Cross Soloists, Australian Youth Orchestra, Queensland Youth Orchestras, Flinders String Quartet and UQ Symphony Orchestra. Since 2013, John has worked as an arranger and composer with Southern Cross Soloists’ QPAC concert series and Bangalow Music Festival concerts, as well as their collaborations with Expressions Dance Company. John is currently undertaking his doctorate studies in composition at The University of Queensland.
