Grade 9s: Guidelines to your future - Choosing the right subjects

Already know what you want to study? Then study up on entrance requirements.If you are clear about what you want to do, check out the websites of both public and private higher education institutions to verify their requirements, and let that guide your subject choices. Very importantly, look at a range of different institutions and courses within your field to allow yourself some choice and a Plan B after Matric.

Dont know? Then leave as many options available as possible.Those who are not yet sure about their future direction should choose subject combinations that will leave them with options and room to manoeuvre later, including Maths and Science. Learners who struggle with precisely these subjects, should consider keeping only one of them to focus their efforts. (Maths Literacy should only be considered as a last resort, Payne advises.)

Consider what makes you happyAs you spend time at your desk every day, going from class to class, and completing your homework, be alert to which subjects make you come alive a little more than others. Determine which subjects mirror your interests and career dreams, and include them. Carefully research how your favourite subjects manifest in the working world, as you may potentially have more - and more interesting - options than you are currently aware of.

Consider what you are good atChoose at least two subjects in which you can do really well. Admission to higher education is performance-based, so it makes sense to do very well in some subjects rather than badly in all of them because you chose only so-called gateway subjects.

Grade 9 learners will soon be gearing up to select the subjects that will see them through to matric an important decision which should not be left to the last minute and which should already be top of mind for

learners who want to give themselves the best chance for success in Grade 12 in 2019.

Dont sell yourself shortYou may think you wont stand a chance of getting good sufficient grades to enter higher education post-Matric. But remember that the South African National Senior Certificate has four levels of pass. While one of them is the degree pass, you could also qualify for diploma or higher certificate study. These two qualifications, which are normally vocationally or career-focused, could give you access straight to the world of work and even degree study if you wanted to do it later. There are also options in public and private FET colleges, or you may even be entrepreneurial and want to start your own business.

The key to making the best subject choices for your future self is to ensure you do your research thoroughly, and at a comfortable pace, so you dont have to rush the decision. Dont leave it until the end of the year, when you might be tempted to just tick the same boxes your friends are ticking, and in the process set yourself up for frustration and disappointment, Payne says.

Na afloop van hierdie naweek is drie seuns in die Cravenweek-span opgeneem en vier seuns in die SWD Akademie-span. Die drie seuns opgeneem in die Cravenweek-span is Welmar van der Mescht, Lawrence Burton en Ludik Muller. Hierdie seuns gaan van 3 tot 8 Julie aan die Cravenweek deelneem, wat in Paarl gaan plaasvind.

Die seuns opgeneem in die SWD Akademie-span, is Johann du Plessis, Johan Leonard, Ruben Lombard en Shaldeo Savage. Hierdie seuns gaan van 26 tot 29 Junie aan die 0/13 XV-tal Toernooi deelneem wat in Sasolburg plaasvind. Laerskool George-Suid is baie trots op hierdie seuns en wens hulle alle sterkte toe.

Netbaldogters opgeneem in SWD- span en Wes-Kaap spanOns is baie trots op ons volgende dogters wat opgeneem is in die SWD netbalspan: Kristen Steyn - 0/11 Antorien Alberts - 0/12 Juanique van Vuuren - 0/13Antorien en Juanique het gaan deelneem aan die Wes-Kaap-proewe, waar Juanique gekies is vir die Wes-Kaap-span.

Rugbyseuns op pad Craven-week toe! Ons is baie trots op Simeon Oosthuizen en William Brown wat aan die Cravenweek gaan deelneem wat vanaf 3 Julie plaasvind.

Redenaar presteerLucia het aan die finale rondte op George deelgeneem in die Gr. 6-7 afdeling en is deur na die Nasionale ATKV Redenaars in Augus-tus in Rusten-burg.

Junior Olyfie Sportdag n groot suksesOns jaarlikse Junior Olyfie Sportdag was weer eens n groot sukses. Die leerders het dit geweldig geniet en ons het baie komplimente van ouers van alle skole gekry. Ons spannetjies het goed opgeweeg teen die groter skole en ons kan dus uitsien na n paar opwindende rugbyjare by Laerskool Laurus.

Natuurwetenskappe-ondersoek SpeletjiesdagOp Vrydag, 20 Mei het ons n speletjiesdag gehou. Daar was iets van alles vir elkeen om te geniet. Van krieket tot gesigverf tot n springkasteel, was daar alles wat n kind se hart kan steel. Baie dankie aan elke ouer en personeellid wat gehelp het om hierdie dag so suksesvol te maak. Baie dankie ook aan die leerders vir hulle goeie gedrag en goeie spel en deelname.

StudiekampDie Graad 5s het gedurende Februarie n opwindende studiekamp by Die Hoek op Oudtshoorn bygewoon. Elke dag was propvol aktiwiteite en verrassings. Water-ekologie, brugbou, hindernisbaan, sterrekyk en night crawl was van die hoogtepunte van die kamp.

Partytjie hou!Laerskool Outeniqua se Early Act-groep organiseer jaarliks n verjaardagpartytjie vir die Wikkelwurms van Bethesda. Albei groepe het dit vanjaar geweldig geniet. Daar is geet, gespeel en nuwe vriendskappe is gesmee.

Kaaplandse Gimnastiek-proeweDie volgende dogters het op 3 Junie deelgeneem aan die Kaaplandse Gimnastiekproewe en pragtig presteer. Hulle het verskeie madaljes verower. Karli Olivier is ook opgeneem in die SA-span wat gedurende Oktober in Nieu-Zeeland aan n internasionale kompetisie gaan deelneem.

Junior BabbelaandLaerskool Park het op Donderdag, 26 Mei hulle tweede Junior Babbelaand aan-gebied. Hierdie aand was n reuse sukses en ons is baie opgewonde oor die toe-komstige redenaars wat hierdie aand opgelewer het. Baie geluk aan elke deelnemer wat bygedra het tot hierdie pragtige aand.

Nuwe skaakbord op skoolgrondLaerskool Park spog met n nuwe groot skaakbord op hul skoolgrond. Dit is deel van die skool se ontwikkelingsplan om die skaakklub verder te bevorder. Dit bied ook n gulde geleentheid vir leerders om pousetyd bietjie hul probleem-oplossingsvermo op te skerp.

Die junior span is die SWD Junior Primre kampioene vir 2016. Our Primary School Majorette team was awarded SWD Champion of Champions at the SWD championships on

Saturday, 11 June. They will be participating in the SAMCA National championships in Germiston during July.

NetbalsterreAllison Eksteen is in die Wes-Kaap-netbalspan opgeneem. Hayleigh September is in die o.13-Eden-netbalspan opgeneem en Chanique Cloete is skaduspeler in die o.11-groep van die Edenspan. Die Edenspan neem in Augustus aan n interprovinsiale toernooi in Riversdal deel.

PerdryAnja Joubert (Gr. 6) het einde April aan die Nasionale Saalperd Kampioenskap in Bloemfontein deelgeneem. Daar het sy met die beste van die bestes gekompeteer en die volgende prestasies behaal: 3-Gang Plesierperd, ruiters o.14 jaar n sewende plek, 3-Gang Plesierperd ruiterkuns o.14 jaar n vyfde plek en in die 3-Gang Plesierperd SA-kampioen gery deur n kind, behaal sy n vyfde plek. Laerskool Volschenk wens haar geluk met hierdie puik prestasies.

Volschenk spog met twee SWD-redenaars Ilke Muir en Ansun Saayman het SWD op 20 Mei verteenwoordig by die ATKV-redenaars se semifinaal in George. Die SWD het agt sprekers gehad en OP twaalf. Slegs twee word gekies om in die Nasionale Finaal deel te neem.

Beide Ansun en Ilke het pragtig gepraat en die beoordelaars bendruk met spitsvondige antwoorde.

Baie geluk aan Ilke wat die derde plek verwerf het, wat haar in die reserwe plek plaas vir die Nasionale Finaal. Voorwaar n puik prestasie!

Vollieland is baie trots op hierdie twee redenaars.

Vollies vier Casual-dagDaar is op 27 Mei Casual-dag in Vollieland gevier. Leerders kon met gewone klere skool toe kom, maar moes ook tekkies en mal-sokkies dra. Die leerders was ongelooflik kreatief en dit was groot pret. n Groot dankie aan die leerlingraad vir die oulike idee en al die relings. Almal het dit baie geniet.

Cheeky broccoli and cheeseSoup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family arent mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.

Smoky bacon and beanSoup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal thatll warm anyone up from the inside.

Sizzling soupsTemperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and youre suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your

bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of

course, bowls of steaming soup. Theres no better side for soup than fresh bread, so heres a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them.

Brrr. The cold is finally really here to stay!


Hearty veggie noodleSoup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving scrumptious!

Die o.15A-span wat bendruk het met hul ho standaard van hantering en goeie verdediging toe hulle die wedstryd met 14-7 wen. Die o.16A-span het in die tweede helfte die krane oopgedraai om met 47-7 te sevier. Die o.14A-span

van Oakdale moes egter die knie buig teen n sterk Kwaggaspan met 7-57.

Dit was n groot skare toeskouers wat rondom die De Eikeveld saamgedrom het toe die eerste spanne van die Bulle en die Kwaggas opgedraf het. Gedurende die eerste helfte het die span van Outeniqua die manne in wit laat bontstaan op verdediging, maar kon hulle nie die sterk verdediging van die Oakdale-

span deurdring nie. Dit was veral in die tweede helfte dat die Oakdalers meer balbesit behou en die meeste van die aanvalswerk gedoen het. Die Oakdalers wen die wedstryd met 22-3 en word vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar as die SWD-kampioene gekroon.

Gedurende die dag is daar in veertien wedstryde teen mekaar meegeding waarvan Oakdale tien en Outeniqua vier gewen het.

Twee Das-spanne deur na Wes-Kaap TopskoleHorskool Langenhoven het op Dinsdag, 24 Mei as gasheer vir die SWD-Topskole Uitdaagreeks opgetree.

Langenhoven se netbalspanne het uitstekend gevaar en die eerste- en O/15-span het deurgedring na die Wes-Kaap Topskole.

Die druk op die eerste netbalspan was baie groot om teen Horskool Outeniqua te wen, aangesien dit bepaal het of die Dasse deurdring na die volgende rondte. Hulle speel n uitstekende wedstryd en klop Outeniqua met 26-25 in n uiters spannende wedstryd. Sowaar n puik prestasie!

Die eerste span neem op 11 Junie aan die Wes-Kaap Topskole te Stellenbosch deel, terwyl die O/15s in September gaan deelneem.

Die eerste netbalspan saam met hulle afrigters en mnr. de Villiers, skoolhoof, na hulle oorwinning teen Outeniqua.

MarkdagDie Graad 11-klas het op 13 en 20 Mei hulle jaarlikse markdae gehou. Die doel van hierdie dae is om geld vir die matriekafskeid in te samel. Daar was heerlike eetgoed vir die leerders om aan te smul.

Richard Marshall, Kayla Smith, Salomien Oosthuizen, Janke Schonken en JD Engelbrecht saam met twee narre wat aan die Dasse vermaak verskaf het.

Langenhoven sevier teen Jan van RiebeeckHorskool Langenhoven het op Saterdag, 14 Mei vir die eerste keer teen Horskool Jan van Riebeeck in die Kaap kragte gemeet. Drie rugby- en hokkiewedstryde en ses netbalwedstryde is gespeel. Die Dasse het n uiters suksesvolle dag beleef en die Interskoletrofee verower.

Western Cape Champs for Laser Run On 27 April, the Western Cape Champs for Laser Run was held in Boland. Hendrik Visser participated in this event and came 4th. He was selected to represent the Western Cape Team for the SA Champs at Bela Bela (Mpumalanga) on 27 July. Thereafter the World Team will be selected to represent South Africa at the Laser Run World Championships in Lisbon (Portugal) from 1 to 4 September.

KIDSTOPThe Glenwood House Grade 7 KIDSTOP team, led by Eila Schoeman, created a clothes mountain for the children of KIDSTOP on Monday, 13 June.

The KIDSTOP team presented a short PowerPoint presentation and humorous sketch in assembly last week, which created a lot of enthusiasm amongst the pupils. So much so, that a very generous donation of unwanted clothes and shoes were brought to the Preparatory School by pupils, their family and friends.

The KIDSTOP team would like to thank everyone who took this appeal to heart and enabled the school to bless our friends at KIDSTOP abundantly with clothes to keep them warm this winter.

Eden and Central Karoo district speechFour York learners took part in the Eden and Central Karoo district speech competition and in true Yorkie fashion were overall winners. Zanele Mabena finished in 1st place, Judy Kuyler 2nd, Magriet Strydom 3rd and Tess Mushaka in the top 10.

Zanele and Judy were selected for the Inter-Provincial Competition in July in Cape Town.

Ex-Yorkies run Comrades Marathon in memory of Carl SchoombieEight ex-Yorkies, Lee Schoombie, Michael King, David and Sean McGibbon, Luke Taylor, JJ Bell, Brendan Bisset and Marcelle du Plessis all completed this years Comrades Marathon in the allocated time.

As these runners entered the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium for the final lap of the gruelling run, they carried a large CARLSTRONG banner in his memory.

The Yorkie friends all made the commitment to run in honour of and in the loving memory of Carl Schoombie, who himself had pledged to run this years race, but very sadly this was not to happen.

Dit het met my gebeur Werner Swanepoel se verhaal van hoopEk deel graag my storie met julle omdat ek wil DANKIE s. Dankie aan my Hemelse Vader vir die tweede kans wat hy my gegee het en waardeur Hy my gedra het. Ek wil dankie s aan my skool, Horskool Outeniqua, met sy wonderlike personeel en leerders wat my met soveel liefde en deernis deur donker tye ondersteun het.

Werner Swanepoel, trotse Graad 12 Kwagga, met sy soet-stout glimlaggie en aansteeklike entoesiasme, is soos menige tieners, n man wat sy sport geniet. Op die skietbaan is hy n yster. In die swembad soos n vis in die water en in die gimnasium sien jy hom gereeld.Hierbenewens skeep hy ook nie sy skoolwerk af nie en is hy pligsgetrou.

Toe ek in Graad 10 was, het n ramp my getref waarvan ek nooit sou kon droom nie. Ek het in n motorfietsongeluk beland en uiteindelik my been verloor. Ons familie was verpletter. Ek is na die Vincent Palotti se Intensiewe Sorgeenheid in Kaapstad gehaas waar my been 14cm bokant die knie geamputeer is. Tydens my hospitalisasie van 5 weke , het ek baie pyn

verduur, 15 operasies ondergaan, 22 eenhede bloed en 3 eenhede plasma ontvang. Die proses van rehabilitasie het hierna genoodsaak dat ons elke tweede week Kaap toe moes ry.

Tydens my verblyf in die hospitaal, het ek by tye gedink ek gaan dit nie maak nie, maar met die bemoediging en mooi wense van honderde briefies van my skoolmaats, besoeke van onderwysers en vriende, boodskappe en selfs besoeke van mense wie ek nie eers geken het nie, het die Here my deur die donker tye gedra.

Tuis moes ek leer om nuwe aanpassings te maak. Ek moes leer loop met my prostese en hoe om alledaagse dinge op n nuwe manier te doen.Ek s altyd,n mens kan jou klere, jou hare of adres verander en voortgaan met die lewe. As ek egter nie my ingesteldheid of denke kon vernuwe nie, sou ek nie kon voortgaan nie.Ek het geleer om nooit op te gee nie en ook besluit dat niks my sou onderkry nie.

n Wyse man het eenkeer ges: If a man has lost his leg or an eye, he knows he has lost a leg or an eye, but if he has lost himself, he cannot know it because he is no longer there to know it.

Werner s duidelik dat hy nie skrik vir n uitdaging nie. Hy skroom ook nie om sy afhanklikheid van die Here te bely nie en verklaar onomwonde met God aan my sy is ek tot alles in staat.

Werner het baie planne vir die toekoms. Hy is opgewonde oor volgende jaar wanneer hy Sielkunde wil gaan studeer, wil opleiding ondergaan oor die vervaardiging van prosteses en sien homself graag uiteindelik in die onderwys.

Die Kwaggas is trots op jou, Werner. Sterkte vir die toekoms!

ATKV- RedenaarskompetisieTydens die semi-finale rondte van die ATKV-redenaarskompetisie wat op 20 Mei in George gehou is, het Elri Cronj (Graad 10) 1ste plek en Gunther Faber 5de plek in die senior afdeling behaal. Sun Joubert (Graad 8) het n 5de plek in die junior afdeling behaal. Baie geluk aan hierdie leerders met hul puik prestasie!

Gholfspan- verteenwoordigersMujahid Jacobs en Ulrich Steinhobel is gekies om die Suid-Kaap o/14 gholfspan gedurende die Junie- skoolvakansie in n interprovinsiale toernooi te Worcester te verteenwoordig.

Museum Speech eveningMareli Schoeman (Grade 10) and Megan Botha (Grade 11) were placed first and second respectively in the Museum Speech evening which was held on Wednesday, 18 May.

Netbal: Top Skole ToernooiOp Saterdag, 11 Junie het die Wes-Kaap Top Skole Toernooi plaasgevind in Stellenbosch. Baie geluk aan die 0/16 A-span van Horskool Punt met hul puik prestasie! Hierdie dogters het pragtige veggees en karakter aan die dag gel en is een van die top drie o/16 netbalspanne in die Wes-Kaap. Baie sterkte word hulle toegewens met die Nasionale kampioenskappe wat van 3 tot 5 Augustus in Boksburg gehou word.

Matriekleerder oorkom uitdagingsMet strikkies in die hare en sterre in die o het Belinda in Januarie 2012 by PW Botha Kollege se hek ingestap as opgewonde Graad 8-dogtertjie. Sy wou PW Botha Kollege toe omdat sy toe reeds gedink het om n tegniese rigting te volg.

Nie baie ver in 2012 in nie, het haar opgewondeheid plek gemaak vir groot trauma, toe haar wreld ineengestort het, nadat sy uitgevind het dat sy swanger is. Met tipiese Belinda Fourie-vasberadenheid het sy met swanger-lyfie en al aanhou skoolgaan en het sy n seuntjie in die lewe gebring.

Nou, vier-en-n-half jaar later is Belinda besig om voor te berei om matriek te skryf. Een van haar gunstelingvakke is Elektriese Tegnologie. Sy beplan om haar as n elektrisin te kwalifiseer omdat sy n passie daarvoor ontwikkel het en glo dat vroue enige loopbaan kan volg.

Haar motto in die lewe is: As ek my drome volg en vasbyt, sal ek suksesvol wees en vir my eie huisgesin kan sorg.

Sy hoop dat ander skooldogters uit haar storie sal leer. Om skooldogter te wees en op skoolwerk te konsentreer en die ander dinge uit te los. Dit is moeilik om skool te gaan en n kind groot te maak. Daar is soveel verantwoordelikhede. Ook om nie toe te laat dat dat die lewe se terugslae n mens moet onder kry nie.
