InsuranceThe effort you put into Grade 11 can be considered as insurance should something go awry in the future. There are an increasing number of institutions that make provisional offers based on your Grade 11 results, and many will still admit you even if your Grade 12 is a little less strong.

Evaluation of post-matric optionsAssessing their Grade 11 results and performance empower learners to make better decisions about their post-school direction, including about which options are available to them, what courses to apply for and where. Learners should start working out their ‘points’ for higher education entrance from Grade 10. This means they should thoroughly research the courses they want to study and the results they need for their application to be accepted. In Grade 11, learners are then able to monitor how realistic their aspirations are and where they need to do more work, which will reduce uncertainty when applying.

While Matric is often viewed as the year, Grade 11 learners and their parents need to be aware that Matric is not a year-long event, but rather a two-year long project. Throughout one’s school career, Grade 12 (Matric) is viewed as the ultimate year, the year in which you have to account for what you learned in the decade before, and the year whose results will follow you for the rest of your life. But what learners and parents don’t realise, is that Grade 11 can arguably be considered as important,

if not more so, than one’s final year, an education expert says.“There are at least five reasons why Grade 11 learners should take this year very seriously, and put as much effort into it as they will next

year,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of The Independent Institute of Education. She says the penultimate school year is a significant one because it provides these options:

Matric exams:a two-year project

Time testingIf you keep good track of how long it takes you to master different kinds of work, that will allow you to draw up an accurate study plan next year. Knowing your pace of work means you will be able to revise with enough time allocated right from the start, so that you don’t run out of days before you run out of work to revise.

Exam focusTeachers set Grade 11 exams to mimic the format and complexity of Grade 12. That means that taking your Grade 11 exams seriously will help you understand how you are doing and how ready you will be for your final exams. It helps you to work out where you need to apply more focus. This year’s exams provide a measure of where you are, and should be treated as part of your preparation for your finals.

ExperimentingGrade 11 allows some time for experimenting before crunch-time arrives. Learn new study methods and stress management methods, and experiment with things you have not done before, like study groups and mind maps. Finding a variety of study techniques and approaches that work for you will allow you to enter Grade 12 with a revision system that will make you perform at your best.

Peanut Butter Chilli FudgeMakes 24 squares or bars

FudgeINGREDIENTS• 850 ml (680 g) sugar• 80 g butter• 60 ml (60 g) golden syrup• 250 ml milk• 1 tin (385 g) condensed milk• 10 ml vanilla essence

Recipe from Baking for Pleasure & Profit by Christine Capendale (Human & Rousseau).

&

METHOD• Grease and line a square 25 cm

baking tin very well.• Heat the sugar, butter, golden syrup

and milk in a saucepan on medium heat and stir to dissolve the sugar The mixture must not boil at this stage.

• When all the sugar has dissolved, bring the mixture to the boil and boil for 5 minutes.

• Add the condensed milk and boil, stirring regularly, until the mixture reaches soft ball stage (116–118 °C).

• Remove from the heat, add the vanilla essence and beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture starts to thicken.

• Pour into the prepared baking tin. Cool slightly while you make the topping.

ToppingINGREDIENTS• 300 ml (150 g) icing sugar• 125 g butter• 250 ml (250 g) peanut butter• 10 ml dried chilli flakes, plus• 5 ml extra for garnishing

METHOD• Melt all the topping ingredients

together in a saucepan on medium heat.

• Mix well and then spread the topping over the cooled fudge. Sprinkle some more chilli flakes over the fudge before it sets.

• Cool and cut into squares or bars as soon as the peanut butter topping is set.

Beauty recipe to heal chapped lips

Lips don’t contain oil glands, which means that they’re even more susceptible to drying out and cracking than other parts of the skin. Lack of moisture in the air during the colder months only exacerbates the problem (another sigh).

To help heal your lips and get you back to your old kissable self, we bring you this lovely scrumptious black coffee lip scrub – specially formulated to breathe life back into cold-battered lips.

Ingredients• ½ tsp maple syrup (or honey)• ½ tsp finely ground brown sugar• 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil• 2 tsp finely ground coffee• Dash of cinnamon or pumpkin spice

(optional)• 1–2 drops of peppermint essential

oil (optional)

DIYIt can be hard to stay “kissable” during winter. Winter weather brings cold weather and with cold weather

comes dry skin and (sigh) chapped lips.

Directions• Mix all ingredients together in a clean

bowl, making a thick paste. Add spices or essential oil, if desired. Scoop mixture into clean container.

• To use, scoop a bit of the mixture onto a fingertip and then gently scrub the top and bottom lips to remove dry, chapped skin.

SWD Skole Gholf Finaal 2016Op Vrydag 8 April het Punt se gholfspan deelgeneem aan die SWD skole gholf finaal te Kingswood gholfklub in George. Die speeltoestande was baie goed met byna geen wind nie.

Winner of Nedbank competitionThe annual Nedbank essay writing competition was based on the energy crisis that started in 2008 and learners needed to make recommendations for both the government and private sector to solve this current situation.

Two of Point High school’s learners took part and achieved remarkable results. Lunati Sidumo was one of the top 15 finalists. She received a full bursary and a cash amount of R2 000.

Minette van Zyl won the competition. Her recommendations was to implement “rooftops” together with “net-metering”. She wants to optimise the current extraction and second stage processing and bring more sustainable energy resources on board. She received a full bursary and a cash amount of R10 000.

Atletiek sluit goeie seisoen afAs daar teruggekyk word na die afgelope seisoen, is Punt atletiek uiters trots op die atlete se prestasies. 21 Atlete het SWD verteenwoordig by die Weskaap kampioenskappe op die nuwe Groenpunt stadion in die Kaap.

Sherno Pick en Robert Pace was deel van die Weskaap span en het in Bloemfontein aan die SA Skole Kampioenskappe deel geneem. Danel Gerber, Danielle Human, Michael Frost, Sherno Pick, Craig Steuderst, en Brintley Thys het ook die ASWD span verteenwoordig by die SA Jeugkampioenskappe.

DramaDie SBA loods ‘n drama kompetisie waarvan ‘n hele paar deel geneem het en net 60 is gekies in SA om die Nasionale kompetisie te verteenwoordig.

In die drama Ontwikkeling-program is daar reeds twee leerders van HS Albertinia betrokke wat aan die KYKNET Nasionale Tienertoneel-kompetisie in Mei vanjaar in die Kunstekaap deelneem. Die projek bied ook ‘n stem opname vir RSG om hulle stemme te toets vir moontlike storie vertellers. Die twee leerders word afgerig deur Gerswin Cupido en Des-Lee Mckenzie.

Welkom, Juffrou Roux!HS Albertinia het ‘n nuwe leerkrag by gekry. Juffrou Talitha Roux is die nuwe Graad 2 opvoeder van HS Albertinia. Sy is afkomstig van Nieuwe Morgen Primêr in Worcester en is baie bly sy het by die span aan gesluit. Die skool en personeel en beheerliggam verwelkom haar graag by ons.

Boys scoop brilliant win!Our boys proved they are a side to be very wary of when they beat St Davids this morning 2-1 in a nail biting opening match at the Independent Tournament. St Davids are currently ranked 4th in South Africa so well done York High - good luck for the rest of the games.

Swimming champ Sergio!Congratulations to Sergio Dos Santos for being selected to represent the Eden Aquatics Open Water Swimming Team 2016.

He participated at the SA National OWS Championships on 5-6 March 2016 at Eikenhof Dam, Grabouw, Western Cape. Sergio is one of 4 swimmers that received full Eden Aquatics OWS colours.

York top in interschool sailingOur Yorkie sailors did us proud by winning the Eden 2016 Interschool Trophy. 35 boats took part and York had a total of 16 sailors on 13 of those boats.

Teams from 9 High schools in the area competed for the coveted trophy - York, Curro, Point, Glenwood, Percy Mdala, Sao Bras, Knysna Secondary, Pacaltsdorp and Knysna High.

With the top 3 sailors from each school’s score being combined to calculate the overall school team rankings, York marched away with a winning score of 89.5 - a massive 100 point lead over the 2nd placed school Curro Mossel Bay (189.5 points). 3rd place went to Point High with 198 points.

We are very proud of the whole team for their effort and especially to James Hellstrom (3rd overall), Robyn Hellstrom (7th overall) and Jason Reid (9th overall) for securing the top spot for York High.

GholfVyf van ons spelers kon deelneem aan die SWD Skole-gholffinaal op 8 April en het besonder goed gevaar. Ons span is gekroon as die SWD Netto-kampioenspan van die seisoen 2015/2016.

KoorDie koor het by afgelope KKNK opgetree en die musiek-produksie waaraan hul deelgeneem het, is benoem vir ‘n Kanna-toekenning.

SportnaweekSportnaweek teen Hoërskool Pearson in Port Elizabeth.

Die skool se skopboksers het vanaf 11 tot 12 Maart aan die SWD- Skopbokskampioenskappe te George deelgeneem en puik presteer.

Anri Greeff vaar uitstekend en behaal drie goue medaljes. Pierre Joubert verwerf drie silwermedaljes en een bronsmedalje. Chantelle de Jager behaal een silwer en twee brons en Jan-Louis Grundlingh twee bronsmedaljes. Al vier verwerf provinsiale kleure in skopboks.

AtletiekRuben Dlepu G12 en Stephan Prinsloo G9 het uitsonderlik tydens die Wes-Kaap Atletiekkampioenskappe presteer.

Ruben verbeter die 13-jaar-oue SWD-rekord teken die vinnigste tyd in die land aan tot dusver vanjaar vir S0/19 5 000m. Hierdie uitstekende prestasie verseker dat hy die Wes-Kaapspan haal.

Stephan behaal ‘n derde plek en haal ook in die Wes-Kaaps-pan vir diskus S0/15.

Dasse-netbal kompeteer landwydOns eerste netbalspan het in Maart aan Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool se uitnodigingstoernooi in Pretoria deelgeneem. Sestien top skole van regoor die land is op spesiale uitnodiging genooi om teen mekaar te kompeteer. Die Dasse het vyf van hulle nege wedstryde gewen en vier verloor.

Die eerstespan het ook aan ‘n topskole-toernooi te George deelgeneem waar 18 skole van regoor die land teen mekaar kompeteer het.

Hulle het goeie rekenskap van hulself gegee en eindig agste uit agtien skole. Die Dasse het beslis hulle stempel met hulle dissipline, goeie gees en entoesiasme afgedruk.

Ten spyte daarvan dat Langenhoven slegs sowat 270 dogters het, het die Dassies nog steeds hul “vrou” gestaan teen skole van 1 000 plus dogters.

Dasse se uitblinkersTop-presteerders in elke graad na afloop van die Maart-toetsreeks..

Nuwe klere vir eerste spanne Ons leerders ontmoet Derick van der WaltDie bekroonde Afrikaanse skrywer Derick van der Walt het op Woensdag 13 April die Graad 11 leerders van PW Botha Kollege toegespreek om sy tienerromans te bemark, in samewerking met NB-uitgewers se streeksbemarkingsbestuurder Elana Bredell en vryskutagent Laurette Campher.

Die leerders het die boekbespreking terdee geniet. Van der Walt het ook vir hulle uittreksels uit die lokprente van sy romans Lien se lankstaanskoene, Willem Poprok, Bambaduze en Hoopvol gewys.

Lien se lankstaanskoene is ‘n Graad 12 voorgeskrewe werk, dus kan die leerders nou uitsien om moontlik volgende jaar die roman te bestudeer. Die roman is die aangrypende verhaal van ’n matriek-meisie wat te midde van ’n familiekrisis leer dat ’n mens meestal slegs twee keuses het: óf jy sink, óf jy swem. Van der Walt het die talent bemeester om homself in die moderne tiener se skoene te plaas en sodoende ‘n roman te skryf wat tot elke jong leser spreek.

Van der Walt het beide die Sanlamprys vir jeugliteratuur: Goud (2007) en die M.E.R. Prys vir Jeugliteratuur (2009) ingepalm met hierdie roman. In 2013 is ‘n Afrikaanse rolprent, gegrond op die roman, vrygestel.

Die taaldepartement van PW Botha Kollege is baie opgewonde om te sien dat soveel leerders entoesiasties is oor Afrikaanse literatuur.

Gimmies gimkanaDrie leerders van Langenhoven Gimnasium het Saterdag 1 April aan die SA Jeugfees vir Gymkana, in Wellington deelgeneem.

UithouritNico-Meyer le Roux, Lara le Roux en Mieke Burger is gedurende die vakansie verkies vir die WP Uithouritspan en sal die Unie verteenwoordig by die Suid-Afrikaanse Internasionale kampioenskappe in Fauresmith gedurende die week van 25 to 30 April.

Dasse-skopboksers presteer

StudiebeursRené Wolmarans, Graad 12-leerder aan Hoërskool Outeniqua, het onlangs die eer te beurt geval om as beurswenner tydens Nedbank en die Wes-Kaapse Provinsiale Tesourie en Onderwys se opstelkompetisie aangewys te word. Die aankondiging van die wenners het in Kaapstad tydens ‘n spogfunksie plaasgevind wat onder andere deur die provinsiale ministers van Finansies en Onderwys bygewoon is.

Die fokus van René se opstel was alternatiewe energiebronne se positiewe effek op ekonomiese ontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika. Tydens die evalueringsfase moes René ook ‘n aanbieding oor die onderwerp aan ‘n paneel kennners doen en ‘n vraag -en antwoordsessie deur die beoordelaars deurloop.

Die studiebeurs wat sy losgeslaan het, dek haar volle B.Rek-studies aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. René is die sesde Kwagga wat die gesogte studiebeurs wen sedert die aanvang van die opstelkompetisie.

Opening van sportsentrumDie Oakdalers het Woensdag, 13 April die nuwe Oakdale Hessequa Abattoir Sportsentrum ingewy. Die gedagte vir die oprigting van ‘n Sportsentrum is in 2012 gebore en is daar na verskeie fondsinsamelingsprojekte gedurende 2014 met die bouwerk begin. Die fasiliteit is opgerig met fondse verkry vanaf ouers, oudskoliere, oud-ouers en ondersteunde instansies. Na die installasie van die hoë standaard vloeroppervlak is hierdie sportfasiliteit van wêreldgehalte in Februarie 2016 voltooi.
