#17 Southern Arkansas enters Week 6 of the 2018 season at 5-0 for the first time ever under tenth-year head coach Bill Keopple, who last weekend took the sidelines for the 100th time as head coach of the SAU Football program. The Muleriders, who are at the halfway point of the program’s 101st season, welcome in Southern Nazarene to Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field for a Great American Confer-ence matchup and the seventh meeting all-time between the two programs which will also serve as the university’s Family Day. Bill Keopple enters into his 10th season as the head football coach at Southern Arkansas. In his time at SAU, Keopple has coached 54 all-conference players, 27 all-academic honorees, 15 all-region selections, and eight All-Americans. In terms of record, Keopple has amassed a 49-46 overall record with 42 of those wins coming over the last six seasons. In that time, Keopple has guided the Mulerider football program to a .500 winning percentage or better each year and has earned a pair of post-season bowl bids with the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in 2012 and the Live United Bowl in 2016. The Heart of Texas Bowl was SAU’s first post-season appearance since 2003. Additionally, in those last six years, the Muleriders have a .646 winning percentage and are an impressive 24-3 (.889) at home. Last season, SAU went 7-4 overall, but were an unblemished 5-0 at home. It was the third time in the last four years that Keopple’s Muleriders have been unbeaten inside the confines of Wilkins Stadium at Rip Powell Field. While the overall record was a touch below the 2016 campaign that saw SAU go 9-3, the 2017 Muleriders remained one of the top overall offenses in the GAC and NCAA Division II. That year, SAU led the league and ranked 21st in DII in Total Offense at 458.4 yards per game. It was the fourth-straight season that the Muleriders led the GAC in Total Offense. Addition-ally, it was fourth-consec-utive season in which SAU fielded a Top-25 offense in DII. Over the last six years un-der Keopple, offense has certainly been a strength of the program as the Muleriders have averaged 472.8 yards of total offense with 298.5

of the yards coming through the air and 174.3 yards coming on the ground. Along with the yardage gained, Keopple’s offense has been able to put points on the board at a high rate. Last year, the Mulerid-ers averaged 36.4 points per game; making it six-straight years in which the team would score at least 35.0 points per game. Over that time, the Muleriders have averaged 36.4 points per game. While Keopple’s high-powered offenses over the past six seasons have taken many of the headlines, his defensive unit has enjoyed success in its own right as well in his time at SAU. This past year, the defensive side of the ball continued to develop into a strength as it ranked second in the GAC in Total Defense for the second-straight year. In 2016, the Mulerider defense improved significantly from the 2015 season as SAU ranked in the top-five in all nine major defensive stat categories in the GAC after only ranking that high in one the year previous. In 2012, Keopple’s defense led the GAC and ranked sixth nation-ally in rushing defense, allowing just 91.4 yards per game. In 2013, the Muleriders’ defense would force 26 turnovers, ranking them 44th in DII. Sixteen (16) of those forced turnovers came via the interception as SAU ranked 33rd nationally in passes intercepted on defense. Keopple’s recent success at SAU comes as no surprise as his previous coaching experience includes Division I assistant coaching stints at Arkansas, Boise State, and Central Arkansas. In addition to his extensive previous collegiate coaching experience, Keopple spent the six seasons prior to coming to SAU as the head coach at

Arkansas High in Texarkana. While at Arkansas High, Keopple led his teams

to two consecutive state championships 2006 and 2007. Overall, Keopple amassed a 44-26-1 record during his six seasons. In 2006, Keopple

was honored as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year. That same year, he was also

named as the 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Founda-

tion, a feat he would repeat in 2007. Keopple was also selected to serve on the high school football All-Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007. Before taking over the reins

at Texarkana, Keopple spent the

2002 season at the University of Tulsa on former Arkansas defen-sive coordinator Keith Burns’ staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Hurricanes. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999 and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions and finished 9-3, playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs with an 8-3 record, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. Graduating with a B.S.E. in 1982 and an M.S.E. in 1986 from Central Arkansas, Keopple began his coaching career there in 1982 as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line. He spent 14 years with the Bears, tutoring the offensive line the entire time and serving as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator from 1990-95. During his tenure at UCA, the Bears won three NAIA na-tional championships and 10 consecutive conference championships

from 1983-92 in the former Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC). A native of Little Rock Arkansas, Keopple is the son of Hall of Fame high school coach C.W. Keopple. A 1976 graduate of Parkview High School, he played on the 1974 and 1976 state championship teams and was an all-state and super team selection his senior season. During his playing days at Central Arkansas, Keopple was a member of two conference championship teams and was an honorable mention selection on both the All-NAIA District 17 and All-AIC teams. His senior season he was selected team captain by his teammates, and the Bears were the regular season No. 1 team in the country with an undefeated record, advancing to the national playoffs. Keopple has been a part of 18 championship teams as a player and coach. He is married to the former Marsha Lee Belew from Beebe and has two adult children.

Landon Keopple enters into his 10th season on the Southern Arkansas

football staff, and enters into his eighth season as Offensive Coordi-nator. In his time as the Offensive Coordinator, Keopple has designed and developed one of the nation’s most prolific and balanced of-fenses. With Keopple in charge of the offense since 2011, the Mulerid-ers have averaged 35.0 points per game and 459.9 yards of total offense per game with 292.3 yards coming through the air, and 167.6 yards on the ground. Additionally, Keopple’s offense has produced 25 all-conference players, eight all-region recipients, and four all-Americans. In each of the past four seasons, Keopple’s offensive attack has led the Great American Conference (GAC) and ranked in the Top-25 nationally in Total Offense with over 5,000 yards gained each season. Keopple’s offense has now amassed over 5,000 yards of Total Of-fense in five of the seven years with him as the OC. Last year, the Muleriders ranked 21st in Division II in Total Offense (458.4 ypg). The two seasons prior, SAU ranked 20th in DII averaging 469.8 ypg in 2016 and 471.3 ypg, respectively. The best overall year offensively for the Muleriders came in 2014 as Keopple’s offense ranked 10th nationally going for 505.4 ypg. The recent success of the Mulerider offense can be directly attributed to quarterback play. Under Keopple’s guidance as the quarterback’s coach and offensive coordinator, SAU has turned itself into “Quarterback U” as the last three starting QBs dating back to 2012 have broken numerous school records and have been lauded with all-conference, all-region and national acclaim. The first among the trio of standout QBs under Keopple was two-time All-GAC QB, Tyler Sykora. In his three years as a starter, Sykora steadily improved each season and ended his career at SAU holding 17 school records, many of which were career marks. Following Sykora was Si Blackshire, who was the Muleriders’ signal-caller for the 2014 season. In that year, Blackshire was named to the All-GAC Honorable Mention team as he led the league and ranked ninth individually in DII in Total Offense at 331.1 ypg.

Most-recently, Keopple has kept the successful QB trend going with Barrett Renner taking over as a redshirt freshman in 2015. Renner enters his senior season as a three-time All-GAC honoree with first-team acclaim twice. In his first season as starting QB, Renner was the GAC’s Fresh-man of the Year, as well as an all-region selection and regional final-ist for the Harlon Hill Award (DII Player of the Year). That year, he set SAU single-season records in Passing TDs (33), Completions (252), Attempts (405), Completion Percentage (62.2), and Total Offense (3,713). At the completion of his junior season, Renner established five career passing records and has bettered his own season records for Passing TDs (35 | 2017), Completions (279 | 2016), Attempts (430 | 2016), and Completion Percentage (66.7% | 2017). Prior to his position at SAU, Keopple was at Ouachita Baptist University where he spent the 2007 and 2008 season as a graduate assistant in charge of the wide receivers. While at OBU, he coached All-America receiver, Julius Pruitt, who most-recently played with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League (AFL). Upon gradu-ating from OBU, Pruitt was signed as undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins. In his time at OBU, Keopple also helped the Tigers to their first winning season in 25 years. Before OBU, Keopple spent the 2006 season at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, working as an assistant coach under his father, current Southern Arkansas Head Coach Bill Keopple. While there, (Landon) Keopple worked with the receivers at Arkansas High and helped guide the team to the 6A state championship. As a prep player, Keopple was an Arkansas All-State quarterback at Fayetteville High School in 2000. Afterwards, he attended the University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2001 on a golf scholar-ship before transferring to the University of Tulsa in the spring of 2002. While at Tulsa, Keopple was a three-year letterman in football and served as team captain his senior season of 2005 when Tulsa won the Conference USA championship against Central Florida. The Hurricane defeated Fresno State in the Liberty Bowl that same year, and Keopple also played in the 2003 Humanitarian Bowl against Georgia Tech. Keopple received his B.B.A. in accounting with a minor in eco-nomics from Tulsa in 2006 and a Masters in sports administration from Henderson State in 2009. Landon and his wife Dana have a daughter, Kinslee and a son, Knox.

Chad Adams

Defensive CoordinatorFirst SeasonFort Hays State (2002)

Chad Adams enters into his first season as the defensive coordinator on the Southern Arkansas football coaching staff.

Adams comes to SAU after a two-year stint as defensive coordinator at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. While there, Adams helped lead the Fire to a 15-5 overall record, a pair of conference championships, and consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Championship Series playoffs. In his first year as the DC at Southeastern in 2016, Adams’ defensive unit led The Sun Conference in Scoring Defense (18.8 ppg), Rushing Defense (87.6 ypg), 3rd-Down Conversion % (26.9%), 4th-Down Conversion % (17.6%), and Sacks per Game (3.7). In terms of NAIA national stat rankings, Adams’ initial Fire defense ranked third in Rushing Defense and ninth in Total Defense (304.1 ypg). As a team, the Fire ended the 2016 season ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA national poll. This past season, Adams’ defense ranked among the upper echelon in the 20-member Mid-South Conference. His overall defense ranked sixth in the league (327.9 ypg), while his scoring defense was fourth (22.9 ppg). Nationally, the Fire ended the season ranked No. 10 as a team, while those aforementioned defensive stat categories ranked 15th and 24th, respectively. Prior to his time at Southeastern, Adams headed up the defense at a familiar foe of the Muleriders as he spent three seasons at Ouachita Baptist. From, 2013-2015, Adams’ helped the Tigers go 24-8 overall and 24-7 in the Great American Conference. In 2014, Ouachita went undefeated in the regular season (10-0) en route to claiming their first outright conference title, and making their first NCAA Division II Playoff appearance as well after earning a first-round bye. Statistically, Adams’ defenses at Ouachita ranked among the top-four in the GAC each year in scoring defense. Ouachita is not the only current GAC-member school that Adams has guided their defensive efforts. Prior to a year-long stop as the assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator at Hutchinson Community College in 2012, Adams spent four seasons as the DC at Northwestern Oklahoma State from 2008-2011, and helped the Rangers begin their transition from NAIA to NCAA DII. Additionally, five years prior to being the DC at NWOSU, Adams was there as a graduate assistant for the 2003 season that saw the Rangers finish runner-up in NAIA after falling in that year’s National Championship game. In his time in Alva as the defensive coordinator, Adams helped the Rangers capture a pair of conference titles and also make two NAIA playoff appearances. Adams’ additional coaching experience has seen him spend time at Fort Scott Community College (2006-07), the University of Central Missouri (2005), and Cof-feyville Community College (2004). Overall for his career, Adams has appeared in six national playoffs and coached in four bowl games.

Boomer Cunningham

Offensive LineThird SeasonCentral Arkansas (2009)

Robert “Boomer” Cunningham enters into his third season as a member of the SAU Football coaching staff where he will serve

as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Muleriders. The leader in the GAC in Total Offense each of his first two years at SAU, Cun-ningham’s offensive line has helped the Muleriders average over 450.0 yards per game and rank in the Top-25 statistically in that category within DII. On the ground, Cunningham’s 2016 O-Line blocked for a running game that rushed for the most yards in a season since 2005 as the Muleriders ran for just over 2,100 yards. The rushing attack followed that up with over 1,800 yards on the ground in 2017 Through the air, Cunningham’s O-Line has provided protection for one of the top passing attacks in the GAC in recent history with a SAU signal-caller throwing for over 3,000 yards for the fourth-straight year in 2017. Additionally, the offensive line under Cunningham’s direction yielded just six sacks the entire season. That mark was the best in the GAC and second-best in all of DII. Individually, Cunningham has coached three All-GAC honorees in Colby Geissen (2017), Mark Jenkins (2016) and Chris Paul (2016). Prior to coming to SAU, Cunningham was at LaGrange College where he spent one season as the offensive line coach/run game coordinator. In that year with the Panthers, Cunningham helped shore up an offensive line that allowed 42 sacks the year prior, to just allowing 25 in the 2015 season. The noticeable improvement in pass protection was bolstered by the fact that the line was very young as it featured four starting underclassmen. Before LaGrange, Cunningham coached at Division I FCS-member, the Univer-sity of Central Arkansas for six seasons. During his first three seasons, Cunning-ham served as an assistant offensive line and offensive quality control coach with the Bears. Following the 2011 season, Cunningham remained as an assistant offensive line coach, but added responsibilities as the recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Cunningham would serve in those roles for three seasons from 2012-2014. In his time at UCA, Cunningham helped coach a pair of standout offensive linemen in Cole Caruthers (2014) and Corey Howard (2012). Both Caruthers and Howard were All-Southland Conference First-Team selections as well as being named as the Offensive Lineman of the Year in the SLC. Both also went on to earn All-America honors from various FCS Football media outlets. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Cunningham began his collegiate playing career at Division II-member Missouri Southern State University. After one season with the Lions, Cunningham transferred to UCA where he played three seasons (two as a starter) along the offensive line. Cunningham also handled deep snapping duties for both the Lions and the Bears.

Benson JordanAssistant CoachWide Receivers/Strength & Cond.Third SeasonOuachita Baptist (2013)

Benson Jordan enters into his third year as a full-time assistant coach for the

Mulerider football team after serving as a graduate assistant the two seasons prior. Jordan will move back to the offensive side of the ball and coach the wide receivers after spending the last two seasons coaching the linebackers. Additionally, Jordan serves as SAU’s certified Strength and Conditioning coach. Through his first two seasons overseeing the linebacking corp., Jordan has coached a pair of All-GAC in Corey Jenkins and Malik Preston. The duo combined for 123 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for lost yardage, 3.0 sacks, an interceptions and a forced fumble in 2016, but injuries to both hindered their 2017 campaign, forcing Jordan to rely on an underclassman-laden assortment of linebackers last season. Despite the youth of the position, the linebackers contributed to five of SAU’s 18 turnovers forced. Jordan’s coaching efforts with the linebackers also helped the Muleriders im-prove their defense across the board the last two seasons. In 2016, the Mulerider defense ranked in the top-five in all nine major defensive categories and topped the league in Pass Defense (176.6 ypg), Opponent First Downs (17.0/gm), Opponent 3rd Down Conversion (26.7%) and Opponent Fourth Down Conversion (25.0). Ad-ditionally, the 2016 defense ranked second in the league in Interceptions (18), Pass Defense Efficiency (109.1) and Total Defense (319.9 ypg). This past season, Jordan’s linebackers contributed to a Total Defense that once more ranked second-best in the GAC. In his first year with the Muleriders in 2014, Jordan served as the running backs coach and helped the Muleriders rush for over 2,000 yards collectively for the second time in three years. The season after, Jordan moved to the outside of the offensive and coached the wide receivers. In his year with the wideouts, Jordan helped keep the Muleriders one of more productive and balanced receiving units in the GAC and NCAA DII as SAU collected over 3,300 yards through the air with a program record 33 passing touchdowns. Prior to coming to SAU as a GA, Jordan spent four years as a quarterback at GAC-rival Ouachita Baptist University (Arkadelphia, Ark.). After redshirting in 2010, Jordan saw action in two games in 2011 before becoming the Tigers’ starting signal-caller his final two seasons at OBU. As a redshirt sophomore in 2012, Benson threw for just under 1,500 yards and tossed 10 touchdowns as he helped guide the Tigers to a 6-4 record. In 2013, Benson guided the Tigers to a 7-3 record while throwing for over 2,200 yards and 14 touchdowns. Jordan is married to the former Reagan Rucker and the couple reside in Magno-lia.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – It was all Southern Arkansas from the opening kickoff as the Muleriders defeated Arkansas Tech handily behind a balanced offering that included an explosive offense and a stifling defense which led to a 38-0 Great American Conference win over the Wonder Boys on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams at Rip Powell Field inside Wilkins Stadium in Magnolia. RECORDS(RV) Southern Arkansas Muleriders (1-0, 1-0 GAC)Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (0-1, 0-1 GAC)

TURNING POINT» Pegue's pick six less than six minutes into the game began to turn the momentum in favor of the Muleriders, but with Tech's chance to poten-tially cut into a 21-0 deficit ending in a punt, the turning point came with Lancaster's dash for six on the punt return along the home sideline which put the game out of reach. OF NOTE» The SAU Defense, under first-year coordinator Chad Adams, posted its first shutout since 2012 when that year's unit blanked East Central 19-0 in a weather-delayed affair in Ada, Oklahoma.» Lancaster's punt return TD was the first for Southern Arkansas since DaVondrick Lison's two-yard scoop and score on a blocked punt against Harding last season. It marks the second-straight home opener that the Muleriders found the end zone via a punt return.» Eleven different receivers caught a pass from Renner on Thursday night. Higgins finished with seven receptions for 117 yards and the aforementioned two scores. Senior wide out Kile Pletcher caught four passes for 54 yards.» Seven different running backs carried for the Muleriders in the win. SAU was led by sophomore Lorenzo Alexander who carried seven times for 82 yards, including a long rush of 62 yards. Junior Keiandre Purifoy received a game-high 11 carries for 48 yards and Perkins added 32 yards on seven carries.» Renner finished 26-of-36 for 304 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with his 17th career 300-yard passing game. His three scores through the air marked the 18th game in his career with three-plus passing strikes and currently has 98 scoring tosses in his career. Additionally, the southpaw eclipsed the 10,000-yard passing mark in his career and has now thrown for 10,209 yards as a Mulerider. » Lison and Floyd each finished with six tackles to lead the defense, while junior Lorenzo Watkins and sophomore Kobe McDonald added five stops each.» Senior Anthony Washington recorded SAU's lone sack of the night and was responsible for 2.5 of the Mulerider defense's 5.0 tackles for loss.» SAU held the Wonder Boy offense to 264 total yards on 60 plays and held Tech's rushing attack to just 98 yards on 23 attempts.» Head Coach Bill Keopple improves to 5-5 in season openers, but has led SAU to first game victories in four of the past five seasons. Under Keopple, the Muleriders have won their past seven home openers after posting an 0-3 mark in such games from 2009-2011.

SEARCY, Ark. – There is an old adage that states "Defense wins championships." Although (RV) Southern Arkansas and #7 Harding didn't clash for the Great American Conference title on Sunday afternoon, the heavyweight tilt had all the makings of a championship game from the start to the finish. And in the end, it was the SAU defense that delivered a late knockout punch as the Muleriders overcame a slow start to upset the nationally-ranked Bisons 28-23 on the road on a cool, overcast Sunday afternoon inside First Security Stadium. The Muleriders' victory over Harding in Searcy is the first for the program since 2003. Hard-ing is the highest ranked opponent Southern Arkansas has defeated in the program's Division II Era (1995-96). RECORDS(RV) Southern Arkansas Muleriders (2-0, 2-0 GAC)#7 Harding (1-1, 1-1 GAC)

TURNING POINT» The third quarter served as the turning point in the game for Southern Arkansas. SAU held the football for 10:06, while converting 5-of-6 third-down plays and totaling eight first downs. The Mulerider offense rushed 13 times for 36 yards and Renner was 7-of-10 passing for 81 yards and the touchdown to Lancaster.» In comparison, Southern Arkansas totaled just 73 yards of offense on 17 plays in the first half; 44 yards fewer on just six fewer plays than its third quarter production.» Additonally, after spending almost 24 minutes on the field in the first half, the Mulerider defense used a halftime breather as well as a brief 4:50, split between two Harding drives, on the field in the third quarter to show out in a resilient effort in that pivotal fourth quarter.» The first 15 minutes out of halftime shifted the course of the game and Preston's third forced fumble of the game which Lison housed proved to be the knockout punch. OF NOTE» Preston had a day to remember as the fearsome linebacker totaled 16 tackles; 13 of which were solo stops, including 3.0 tackles for loss for 11 yards, while also adding the aforementioned three forced fumbles. The last SAU player with 16 or more stops in a game was in 2015 when Elgin Moore delivered 17 tackles against Ouachita.» Sunday marked the first fumble return(s) for a touchdown(s) for the Mulerider defense since Preston scooped-and-scored from 20 yards out against East Central on November 7, 2015.» Anthony Washington picked up 11 stops (6-5) and sophomore Demarcus Pegue added ten (4-6).» Southern Arkansas held Harding's flexbone in check as they surrendered just 184 yards on 60 carries at 3.1 yard per rush, while forcing the ball on the turf four times.» The Muleriders totaled 13.0 tackles for loss for 48 yards and the team's three fumble recoveries resulted in 79 yards and a pair of scores.» Southern Arkansas won the time of possession in the second half (18:18 to 11:42). Ad-ditionally, SAU outscored the Bisons 21-6 in the second half.» Renner tossed a pair of touchdown passes; the 99th and 100th scoring strikes of his career, to move into a tie for second place with former Central Arkansas quarterback and current UCA head coach Nathan Brown on the state's all-time collegiate touchdown passing list.» His 233 yards passing (21-of-33) give him 10,262 for his career; 296 yards from overtaking Brown for third all-time on the state's career collegiate passing yards list.» Higgins went over 2,000 yards receiving for his career after hauling in four catches for 66 yards. He now has 2,020 yards receiving; 830 yards back of Nik Lewis' program record.» Lancaster hauled in four passes for a team-high 76 yards and added 17 yards worth of punt returns to total 93 all-purpose yards.» Alexander was the leading rusher with 40 yards on a dozen carries.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Southern Arkansas defense recorded a second half shutout and forced three turnovers for the third-consecutive game, while senior wide receiver Karonce Higgins registered just the fourth 200-yard receiving game in program history as the #25/24 Muleriders erased a halftime deficit to surge past Southwestern Oklahoma State 36-12 on Saturday night at ASAP Energy Field in Weatherford, Oklahoma. RECORDS#25/24 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (3-0, 3-0 GAC)Southwestern Oklahoma State (1-2, 1-2 GAC)

TURNING POINT(s)The turning point of SAU's win could easily be lost in the box score, but won't easily be forgot-ten. Facing a 3rd and 12 from their own 20 yard during their second drive of the second half while also trailing 12-7, Renner stepped up in the pocket and found redshirt senior wide receiver Kile Pletcher who, with a pair of defenders draped over his back, made a tremendous play on the football while going to the ground for 15 yards and a new set of downs for the Muleriders. Six plays later, Southern Arkansas would take a lead that they would not relinquish. OF NOTE» Renner's touchdown pass to Higgins moved the southpaw into second place all-time on the collegiate touchdown passing list in the state of Arkansas. Renner broke a tie with former Central Arkansas quarterback and current UCA head coach Nathan Brown. Renner is now 20 touchdown passes from tying Henderson State's Kevin Rodgers for the state's collegiate record.» Additionally, his 362 yards through the air give him 10,804 career passing yards which moves him into second all-time on the state of Arkansas's collegiate passing yards list as he moved past Brown and Arkansas State's Ryan Aplin.» The veteran quarterback completed 71% of his passes on Saturday night.Higgins' two touchdowns receiving give him 25 for his career and bring him 11 scoring recep-tions away from tying Nik Lewis' program record. He currently has 2,257 yards receiving; 595 yards back of tying Lewis' program record in that category. Additionally, Higgins needs just 27 catches to break former teammate Jonathan Weisheit's career program record set last season (175).» Higgins finished a reception shy of tying the single-game program record of 14 set by Kenneth Brown twice during the 1986 season. The last Mulerider receiver with a dozen or more grabs in a game was Higgins against Ouachita last season. The Searcy, Arkansas native's 237 yards receiving on Saturday night is the second-most in school history and just ten yards shy of tying the single-game record set by Chris Terry at Southeastern Oklahoma in 2013. It is the most receiving yards for an SAU wide out in a game since current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Tanner Hudson's 166 yards last season against Ouachita.» Purifoy and Perkins carried the load on the ground as the duo combined for 27 carries and 124 yards with Purifoy finding the end zone.» Lison recorded a sack on the safety and it gives the fearsome defender 19.5 for his career; 5.5 sacks away from matching David Sanders' career program best total of 25.0.» Watkins and senior Anthony Washington each finished with six tackles with the latter recording 3.5 tackles for loss totaling 13 yards. Redshirt junior Stacy Lawrence and sophomore Antonio Washington chipped in with five stops apiece with the younger Washington brother adding 1.5 tackles for loss. MAGNOLIA, Ark. – True freshman Brock Floyd picked off a Northwestern Oklahoma pass late in the fourth quarter to put the final stamp on yet another stifling performance by the Mulerider defense, while senior Lorenzo Alexander rushed for a forty-yard touchdown on the first play following Floyd's interception as Southern Arkansas closed the door on the Rangers' comeback attempt as SAU improved to 4-0 behind a 27-14 Great American Conference victory on a wet Saturday evening inside Wilkins Stadium. RECORDS#21/19 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (4-0, 4-0 GAC)Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-3, 1-3 GAC)

TURNING POINT(s)-After Preston sacked Ranger quarterback Isaiah Weed forcing a fumble in which Preston recovered, the Mulerider offense would be unable to cash in on the red zone opportunity as an 18-yard field goal attempt from the right hash missed right giving Northwestern Oklahoma the football at their own 20 yard line; trailing by six, 20-14, with 6:36 to play.-On a 1st and 20 at the Ranger 36 yard line, Weed looked down the visitor sideline at what he thought was one-on-one coverage, but true freshman Brock Floyd baited the opposing QB and stepped in front of the pass and took it 25 yards down to the Ranger 25 giving Southern Arkansas an opportunity to put the game away.-After a cut block on the return backed the start of the Mulerider drive to the Ranger 40, senior Lorenzo Alexander raced off of left tackle forty yards for the touchdown to put Southern Arkansas up 27-14 with 3:36 to play. OF NOTE-The Mulerider defense logged another stellar performance as they allowed just 254 yards on 54 plays. Weed completed just nine of his 23 passes for 151 yards, while SAU allowed just over three yards a carry. SAU forced and recovered two fumbles and picked off a pair of Weed passes.-Redshirt senior DaVondrick Lison led SAU with eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss totaling 22 yards. Lison registered 2.5 sacks and now is just three sacks shy of tying the career program record.-The Muleriders totaled 12 tackles for loss for 55 yards, including five sacks for 41 yards.Redshirt senior Kaseem Smith and sophomore Kobe McDonald each collected six tackles with the latter collecting 2.5 for loss.-Floyd finished with four tackles including 1.5 for loss, the big interception, and three pass breakups.-Southern Arkansas finished with 342 yards of offense on 76 plays and totaled 100 yards in returns.-Redshirt senior Karonce Higgins caught five passes, including a pair of acrobatic tip drill snags, for 83 yards. Redshirt junior Jared Lancaster snagged four receptions for 28 yards.-Alexander was the leading rusher with 82 yards on 16 carries and none bigger than the aforementioned 40-yard dagger. SirCharles Perkins carried 13 times for 77 yards, while Purifoy's 18 yards came on seven rushes with a score.-White averaged over 40 yards a punt in four attempts on Saturday night.-Southern Arkansas is 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2012 when that year's team started 4-0, finished 8-3, and lost a 36-35 thriller to a Hal Mumme-led McMurry University in the C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – A combined one hundred points and 1,165 total yards of offense was the result on Satur-day afternoon in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and when the smoke had settled #19/18 Southern Arkansas survived a shootout with Oklahoma Baptist behind career-best performances from a pair of redshirt juniors in wide receiver Jared Lancaster and running back SirCharles Perkins as the Muleriders topped the Bison, 55-45 in Great American Conference action. The Muleriders (5-0, 5-0 GAC) are unbeaten through their first five games of the season for the first time under tenth-year head coach Bill Keopple, who on Saturday took the sideline for the 100th time as the head coach at Southern Arkansas. Lancaster's big day receiving saw the Bossier City, Louisiana, native record career-bests in receptions, re-ceiving yards, and receiving touchdowns as he hauled in nine passes for 156 yards and three scores. Perkins topped the century mark in rushing for the first time in his career as he totaled 125 yards on the ground behind a career-high 16 carries that saw three result in touchdowns. Additionally, the Pittsburg, Texas, native returned a pair of kickoffs for 22 yards to finish with 147 all-purpose yards in the win. Perkins wasn't the only SAU back to find some running room on Saturday as senior Lorenzo Alexander rushed 24 times for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Alexander and Perkins become the first Mulerider running backs to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark in the same game since Deandre Jenkins (129 yards) and Deion Williams (108 yards) both topped 100 yards on the ground on October 18, 2014, against Southern Nazarene. Southern Arkansas' 224 yards rushing are the most for the team this season and the most since rushing for 266 yards last season at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State. RECORDS#19/18 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (5-0, 5-0 GAC)Oklahoma Baptist (2-3, 2-3 GAC)

TURNING POINT(s)-A six-minute and 38 second stretch during the third quarter proved pivotal in the win for Southern Arkansas.-Following Haire's touchdown run that gave Oklahoma Baptist a 31-27 lead, the Muleriders, behind tough running from Alexander and a 39-yard completion from Renner to Lancaster highlighted a nine-play, 78-yard drive that took 4:08. -It resulted in SAU taking a 34-31 lead behind an eight-yard rush by Alexander, who carried six times for 29 yards on the drive, which included a seven-yard carry on third and four from the SAU28.-It appeared that the Bison would march down the field and trade points once more, before true freshman Brock Floyd ended the seven-play drive by picking off Haire in the endzone; Floyd's second interception of the day.-Southern Arkansas would score on its next drive as a result of the aforementioned third and final score by Perkins which put the Muleriders up ten; which stood as the final deficit for the Bison after the two offenses continued to find the endzone down the stretch. OF NOTE-Southern Arkansas featured a balanced offensive attack as they recorded 13 first downs on the ground and 14 through the air, while totaling 611 yards of offense; the first 600-plus day for the Muleriders since last season's Murphy USA Classic shootout with Ouachita which resulted in 611 yards of total offense as well. SAU averaged 7.7 yards per play on Saturday.-The Muleriders held the football for 34:21 and converted 4-of-4 on fourth down and were 50% (6-of-12) on third down in the win.-Renner finished 26-of-33 for 387 yards and three touchdowns to one interception. Renner now has 11,360 career passing yards and is one of two quarterbacks in Arkansas collegiate football history to throw for over 11,000 yards in a career. His three touchdown passes give him 108 in his career and he is 16 back of tying Henderson State's Kevin Rodgers for the all-time collegiate state record.-Redshirt senior Karonce Higgins caught seven passes for 93 yards, including a long of 50. He now has 161 career catches and is 14 receptions back of tying the program record. Additionally, Higgins has recorded 2,433 yards receiving and is 419 yards shy of Nik Lewis' all-time program record.-Redshirt senior Kile Pletcher grabbed six passes for 88 yards and redshirt junior Jaidon Parrish caught two passes for 49 yards.-Junior Lorenzo Watkins led the SAU Defense with 10 total tackles and a pass breakup, while redshirt senior Kaseem Smith added six tackles.-Redshirt junior Malik Preston chipped in with six stops. Floyd added five tackles as did three other Mulerid-ers.-Southern Arkansas held OBU to just 78 yards on 17 carries, but Haire threw 60 times and completed 39 of those attempts for 476 yards and five touchdowns.
