Solvay Opens Innovation Centre in
Singapore to Focus on Specialty
Formulations in Asia-Pacific 2014/2/12
Solvay has unveiled a new Research &
Innovation Center in Singapore, which will be
the Group’s core innovation ground for its
Consumer Chemicals growth engine in the
Asia-Pacific region. Located in Singapore’s
Biopolis research hub, the 1,100 square-meter
laboratory will lead worldwide innovation
projects primarily for Solvay’s business unit
Novecare, which is active in the fields of Home
and Personal Care, Coatings and Oil & Gas. It
will also be a regional hub in developing
sustainable solutions for the Agrochemical
business and provide technical support to
Solvay’s regional customers as well as plants in
the region.
Solvay, which received strong support from
the Singapore Economic Development Board
(EDB), invested close to €2 million in the
laboratory and expects to invest another €5
million in the next five years to boost the
laboratory’s capabilities, including the hiring of
an extra 30 researchers.
The laboratory is Solvay’s latest investment
in Singapore after Novecare, a global leader in
the specialty surfactants industry, announced
in April 2013 the construction of a large scale
alkoxylation facility.
Evonik Opens Expanded Precipitated
Silica in Thailand 2014/3/19
Evonik Industries A.G. opened its expanded
production for precipitated silica in Rayong. The
firm would not release investment figures, but
said it was in the lower double-digit million
range.
Evonik said the increased capacity will
supply the automotive industry as well as the
food and animal feed and paints and coatings
industries. The firm anticipates growth driven
by demand for fuel-saving tires and life science
applications in Southeast Asia.
“Expanding our manufacturing footprint in
Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand
highlights our commitment to this region and
allows us to better serve regional markets with
state of the art products and optimum
solutions,” said Peter Meinshausen, regional
president of Southeast Asia, Australia and New
Zealand.
Evonik said it is one of the leading
manufacturers in silica and has a global
capacity of around 500,000 metric tons per
year for precipitated, fumed silica and matting
agents.

Inoac Moves Foam Production to Sri Lanka from China 2014/4/9
Inoac, a leading Japanese conglomerate, will be investing USD 20
million in Sri Lanka over the coming years as it relocates selected foam
operations to Sri Lanka from China, thus allowing its customers in the
country to save millions in foreign exchange needed for the import of
speciality flexible foams used for apparel and in particular for lingerie.
In addition, Inoac announced it is also considering the establishment
of a world class automotive component operation in the country. Inoac is
a leading tier producer of automotive components for Toyota, Nissan,
Honda, Mitsubishi, Yamaha and several other renowned global brands.
Within Japan, Inoac has almost 60 – 70 % market share in selected tyres,
tubes, and specific automotive components.
“If the Maruti Suzuki assembly project starts here, we will bring our
Japanese automotive component manufacturing right here to Sri Lanka,”
explained Soichi Inoue, Founder and CEO of Inoac Corporation.
Inoac is no stranger to the country – its involvement with Sri Lanka
started as far back as 1959 when it commenced its first joint venture with
Associated Motorways (AMW) in Sri Lanka. Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of
Industry & Commerce of Sri Lanka, said: “There is no doubt that Inoac’s
re-entry is a great boost for Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in the global
marketplace as well as exports diversification efforts. Therefore on behalf
of our committed President Mahinda Rajapaksa, I thank Inoac Corp. for its
initiatives here.”
“Nearly two years ago
Inoac took the decision
to transfer their
production facility from
China to Sri Lanka to
produce and supply
unique high quality
polyurethane foam to
the giants of the
apparel industry in Sri
Lanka such as MAS, Brandix, Benji and Silueta,” said Ken Miwa, Executive
Managing Director of Inoac Corp, Shinagawa, Tokyo. “We are shifting at
least 20 % of our production from China to Sri Lanka.” MAS is a leading
supplier of lingerie to leading retailers including Victoria’s Secrets.
Although it imports foams, the company now uses novel production
technology to produce moulded polyurethane foam cups.
“Soft foam is a must in making brassieres of high export quality and
Sri Lankan apparel suppliers have been importing the entire volumes to
date,” said Rajiv Dharmendra, CEO of Silueta Ltd., an apparel producer
with Biyagama Export Zone. “From today, there is no need to import. Sri
Lanka produces at least 40 million such brassiere pieces for export
regularly. Due to soft foam now being made in Sri Lanka for the first time,
we believe the cost saving for Sri Lanka is at least USD 5 million annually
in the apparel sector alone and the savings could be higher.”

date.
PTTGC said it will support Vencorex as a R&D centre for isocyanate.
Perstorp president and CEO Jan Secher said: "This financial
transaction is fully in line with Perstorp's long-term strategy to focus on its
core business activities outside the isocyanates market."
Perstorp Holding and PTTGC formed a joint venture in May 2012 and
named it Vencorex Holding.
Following the completion of the latest deal, Perstorp will continue to
support Vencorex as the new strategy is being implemented and the

India launches Anti-dumping Probe into
Chemical Imports from China and Switzerland
2014/7/31
The Directorate General of Anti-Dumping
and Allied Duties (DGAD), an arm of the
Commerce Ministry of India, has launched an
anti-dumping probe over imports of
Diketopyrrolo Pyrrole Pigment Red 254 from

chemical primarily used in the paint industry.
DGAD said that it has found sufficient
evidence of dumping from China and
Switzerland.
DGAD was quoted by the Press Trust of India
as saying that the DGAD "hereby initiates an
investigation into the alleged dumping and
consequent injury to the domestic industry ... to
determine the existence, degree and effect of
any alleged dumping, and to recommend the
amount of anti-dumping duty, which if levied
would be adequate to remove the 'injury' to the

The agency is verifying the import data from
January 2013 to December 2013 and will also
consider the data of 2010-11 and 2011-12 to
evaluate its impact on domestic producers.
Following the investigation, DGAD could
recommend an anti-dumping duty, which will be
imposed by the Finance Ministry.
