Indus River

• Begins in Tibet and flows southwest 2000 miles across the tip of India and through Pakistan before it empties into the Arabian Sea.

• The Indus River valley is one of the richest farming areas in the region.

• Many different civilizations have lived along this river throughout the centuries.

Ganges River-Mother Ganges

• India’s most important river• Begins in the Himalayan mountains and flows

southeast through India before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

• The water carries rich sediment called loess(topsoil, silt, and minerals) to the farmlands downstream creating a large, fertile delta at its mouth.

• Because 400 million people live and work along the Ganges, the water is HEAVILY polluted.

Mekong River

• Begins in Tibetan Plateau and runs south from China and Vietnam and empties into the South China Sea.

• The Mekong River Delta has some of the richest farming land in the world.

• Home to giant freshwater fishes• Asia’s 7th longest river

Huang He (Yellow River)

• Begins in mountains of Tibet and flows east emptying into the Yellow Sea.

• The yellow dust blowing out of the Gobi desert is picked up by the river and carried into the sea, giving both a yellowish color…..hence the name!

• Used for transporting people and goods and creates rich soil for farmers.

• Frequent flooding has led some to call it “China’s sorrow” due to the suffering it causes

Yangtze River (Chang Jiang)

• Begins in Tibetan plateau and travels east to the East China Sea.

• Shanghai is located at the mouth of the river and is one of China’s most important ports

• Over 3400 miles long making it China’s LONGEST river

• Main transportation route for 400 million people making the river heavily polluted- nicknamed the giant toilet bowl of Asia

• Connected to the Huang He by the Grand Canal built over 2000 years ago

Himalayan Mountains• Form the southern border of China and India and

spreads north forming the Tibetan Plateau• Nicknamed the “roof of the world” because of the

high altitudes• Form a barrier between India and countries to the

north, causing India to rely on water for trade and travel

• Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world and is on the border of Nepal and China

Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts• The Gobi desert is in

east and central China• Can be one of the

hottest and coldest places in the world

• Mostly covered in sand and rocks

• The Taklimakan desert is over 600 miles long- one of the longest in the world.
