THE PAVILION AT SEACITY MUSEUMVisions of the Universe 30 October 2015 – 21 February 2016 Wander amongst dazzling galaxies, spectacular nebulae and millions of shimmering stars in this breath-taking collection of some of the most incredible images of our universe ever made. From Royal Museums Greenwich comes Visions of the Universe - an exhibition that shows how we have captured images of the heavens over the centuries, from the earliest hand-drawings to photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and the very latest footage from the Mars Curiosity Rover. Human beings have always been curious about the night sky. In the early 1600s the invention of the telescope showed astronomers things that had never been seen before. The development of photography 250 years later gave them a new tool which could accurately record the light that passed through their telescopes. Since then, driven by their desire to find out more, astronomers have helped advance photographic technology itself. The exhibition draws together an astonishing array of images of stars, planets and galaxies gathered from NASA, the Russian space programme, the European Southern Observatory and more of the world’s greatest telescopes and space missions.Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302, taken by Hubble space telescope, 2009 Credit: NASA / ESA and the Hubble SM4 ERO Team

SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERYSpirit of Place: Ben Johnson Paintings from 1969 to the present day 18 September 2015 – 23 January 2016Galleries 1-4Ben Johnson is one of the finest painters of structure and light of our time. He relates to an artistic tradition that dates back to the Renaissance and the work of artists such as Piero della Francesca and Vermeer also drawing inspiration from Kandinsky, Tatlin and the Bauhaus. Celebrated especially for his epic and minutely detailed cityscapes, Johnson has recently become interested in exploring the potential for architectural space to evoke the past. His paintings, prints and drawings are held in public collections throughout the UK including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and Tate and in many museums worldwide. However most of his output has been commissioned for private collections and so has rarely been seen in UK public galleries. This is the artist’s first ever retrospective exhibition to examine his extraordinary career spanning 54 years and a rare opportunity to see many of his works together.Image Credit: Ben Johnson, Room of the Revolutionary 2014 (work in progress)

Stencilism: A Cut Above 18 September 2015 – 23 January 2016Galleries 5&6As stencil art has become more established, it has moved indoors and as a result, changed the rules from temporary works on the street to permanence in national gallery collections.Coinciding with Spirit of Place and inspired by Ben Johnson’s hyperrealist paintings, Stencilism: A Cut Above has brought together emerging and established artists from the world of street art that have evolved an almost obsessive eye for detail in their stencils, including international artists Czarnobyl, Otto Schade, Orticanoodles and Stickee.

New Acquisitions 25 July – 28 NovemberGallery 7This display showcases some of the exciting recent additions to Southampton City Art Gallery’s permanent collection including textiles, photographs, paintings and drawings. Among the new acquisitions are gifts and bequests including Caroline Achaintre’s striking Triad and Phyllida Barlow’s Untitled: Cardboard Tower. We are delighted to be welcoming back Jay Screech Oak and Hawthorn near Hollands Wood by Kurt Jackson, which originally formed a part of his major exhibition here earlier in the year. Air Water Stone 25 July – 28 NovemberGallery 8This exhibition explores the recent George and Ann Dannatt Gift to Southampton City Art Gallery, which includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by key figures associated with the St Ives Group of Artists in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, including Denis Mitchell, Terry Frost, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and John Wells. The display takes its title from a work by John Wells of 1955 and evokes his statement that he ‘wished to paint the warmth of the sun’ and other sensations offered in the natural scene. Additional works from the gallery’s permanent collection have been displayed alongside the gift as a reminder of longer and wider preoccupations with similar themes. TUDOR HOUSE & GARDENSaxon Southampton From 18 July Saxon Hamwic was a thriving town, international port and manufacturing centre, situated in what is now the St Mary’s area of Southampton. It was a major trading centre and even had its own mint, making small silver coins called sceattas. The people of Hamwic were industrious and carried out a wide range of activities, including pottery making, metal working, glass bead making, bone working, spinning and weaving. This exhibition showcases archaeological finds which shed light on how people lived and worked here over a thousand years ago. Find out what food they ate, what type of jewellery they wore and see items recently uncovered by archaeologists working in the city. Image: Saxon Seahorse

Advance notice for Artists…..Open Exhibition Southampton City Art Gallery, Open Exhibition: A Sporting Life, 24 June – 10 September 2016

Residents of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Dorset are invited to submit their artwork for this ‘open exhibition’. In the year of the Olympic Games, the theme is ‘sport and recreation’. Taking inspiration from the world’s foremost sporting event, we invite entrants to celebrate sporting activity, be it walking, running, sailing, football, swimming, climbing or any number of countless activities or diverse sporting pastimes.

The Olympics is renowned for its cultural associations. The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad involved artists such as Bridget Riley, Chris Ofili, Rachel Whiteread and Claire Woods, all of whom are represented in the City’s Art Collection.

The judges will consider both 2-D and 3-D work in any medium, as well as video, and invite entrants to consider the theme as creatively as possible. Successful entrants will have their work exhibited at the Gallery from June to September 2016.
