SOUTHAMPTON (LONDON), ENGLAND Arrive: 0800 Wednesday, 5 September
Onboard: 1800 Saturday, 8 September
Brief Overview: London, England is Europe’s
melting pot. Situated on the River Thames
and sprawling for approximately 600 square
miles, it is home to more than nine million
people. Perhaps the most famous resident is
Queen Elizabeth II whose official residence is
Buckingham Palace. The nearby Kensington
Palace, home of Prince William and Kate, also
provides visitors with a glimpse into royal life.
Westminster Abbey has been the official site
for Royal coronations, weddings and state
funerals for centuries. The Tower of London
(former prison and current home of the crown
jewels) and the Palace of Westminster (home
of the Houses of Parliament) line the Thames
and can be viewed from the London Eye or a
cruise along the river. The palace’s clock
tower, often called Big Ben, is the symbol of London 2012 Olympic Games. We will be in London for the
Paralympics, which are held immediately following the Olympic Games. For ticket information go to
https://paralympics.cosport.com
Out of town: The city of Winchester, about 45 minutes from Southampton, is home to Winchester Cathedral.
Built in 1079, it is the longest cathedral in Europe. The university town of Oxford is rich with ties to children’s
literature including the Eagle and Child Pub, a venue for literary meetings attended by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R
Tolkein. To go way back in time, you may wish to visit the pre-historic monument of Stonehenge or the
Roman spa town of Bath.
