My parents always stressed educa-tion. My dad quit school in third grade in New York and my mom left school in sixth grade to work at a shrimp factory in Louisiana to help the family pay the bills.

They didn’t want me to go through what they went through.

School, they drilled through my mind, was the way to freedom. That my educa-tion would reward me in many ways.

The sacrifices they made then con-tinue to benefit me now. Though they have long passed, I know how proud they would be to see their son a writer and their granddaughter a brilliant student.

My dad worked on a farm, he labored on the oil rigs and made a career of being a custodian at a high school in New York. He loved that latter job because he could always meet new people. His job discour-aged him though because he could never get that promotion - although it was available more than once - as the head custodian. He couldn’t read the paperwork, however, and therefore no promotion.

He couldn’t read, yet he taught me to read - covering the labels of food at the grocery story and making me spell what the photo was.

He couldn’t do math but taught me by having me bring a calculator when we went shopping and adding up the groceries - I found it challenging and fun.

Similarly my mom - she had a little more formal education - would help me with spelling as best she could, reading the vocabulary words to me and I would spell them back to her and tell her the definition. Sometimes she wouldn’t be able to read the word and I’d have to get a sneak peek.

I hear similar stories throughout the Valley of parents stressing an education to their children.

I applaud them.And I applaud VAMOS - the 18th annual VAMOS Cup tournament will be held

Saturday, March 1 at Palm View Golf Course. More than $20,000 in prizes will be awarded and proceeds from the tournament will benefit VAMOS’ initiative to provide four-year renewable scholarships to Rio Grande Valley students.

Because of VAMOS - the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholar-ships, Valley children have gone to the best schools - from Texas to UCLA to Har-vard. There is no boundary to this organization’s vision. Led by Dr. Armando Mon-cada, the VAMOS Golf Committee Chairman, Maritza Rodriguez, VAMOS Executive Director, the new presenting sponsor Plains Capital Bank and, of course, founder Alonzo Cantu - more kids will have more opportunities to receive the best education available.

will finish up our GAME acronym. Give up on gimmicks, Aim for consistency, Maintain a firm grip, and finally Enjoy the Game!

Personally, I’m really enjoying the game. For several reasons I’ve decided not to take golf so seriously. Not that I don’t care about my scores, because I do! But I started playing late in life, it’s not how I make a living, and I don’t have the time to dedicate to becoming great (whatever great is for a weekend golfer).

Quoting Chuck Swindoll, “I am

convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I respond to it.”

Like most golfers I was convinced that if I play better I will enjoy the game more. However, I have found the opposite to be true. The more I enjoy the game the better I play.

The same is true in our lives. Most of us believe if everything was going better (i.g. we had more money, fewer arguments with our spouse, less trouble with our kids) we could enjoy life more. I’m telling you that is not true! In fact it is just the opposite. If you will enjoy life everything will go better. Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the Lord and He will give you your hearts desire.

Here is my pastoral advice in a nutshell. Show more appreciation for your wife, kids, and job. Get a pushcart or carry bag and start walking the course. Enjoying life might actually be that simple!

Wendy Werley Bullock, Rancho Viejo Resort and Country Club’s Director of Sports & Wellness, was named a U.S. Kids Golf Team Top 10 Teacher for 2013.

Bullock received the award at a din-ner on the final day of the PGA Show in Orlando in January. It’s the second consecutive year Bullock has earned the honor.

“Thank you John Godwin and the U.S. Kids Golf Team for awarding me the Top 50 Teacher's award for 2013!” Bullock posted on her Facebook page. “I am extremely honored, appreciative and very grateful that I was able to receive an award for doing what I love!”

There used to be a time when everyone had a different swing.

Notably most recently as an example is Jim Furyk. Accord-ing to Wikipedia, it's described like this: Furyk's trademark looping golf swing begins with a setup that has the ball at the heel of the club instead of the center, or even out at the toe. This moves his 6 ft 2 in frame in so close that his hands are virtually touching his thighs. Most golfers would have a dif-ficult time with a golf club from such a starting point.

Golf commentator David Feherty has described it as "an octopus falling out of a tree". Others have noted it reminds them of "a one-armed golfer using an axe to kill a snake in a telephone booth.”

But Furyk may be the last of generations to have a swing set apart so far from what is now considered the norm.

Technology goes a long way in determining the perfect setup, perfect swing and perfect stance – eliminating outliers and helping golfers reach the optimum in every facet of the game.

Golf Headquarters' founder and owner Bill Hayter has seen this transformation over the year and has recently invested in a $50,000 simulator that will load you up with more data than you thought humanly possible regarding your swing and your clubs.

The only thing it doesn't seem to do is prepare coffee for you.

“This will give you your launch angle, your backspin rate, your sidespin rate, your ball speed, your club speed and anything else relevant to your swing.

“What you find is that it's not always the golfer – a lot of times it's that the golfer doesn't have the best choice of a club for him or her.”

Simply put, his new simulator is an amazing piece of equipment.

You can choose your venue, the wind speed, the wind di-rection, the type of ground you're playing on – even the sky.

If you have enough money and room at your house, you can even buy one and play full rounds of golf – minus the walking 18 holes part.

“You can practice on this machine, play a full round, hit 7-irons to see your consistency and do things like check the lie of the club at impact,” Hayter said. “Maybe your club is too long or too short. The data we receive from this is incred-ible.”

Hayter said the upgrade meant changing from radar-driven data gathering to multiple cameras and the newest software available on the market.

“We have a lot of people who are coming in to buy hybrids,” Hayter said as an example. “They are usually looking to fill a particular yardage gap and with our new simulator we can determine which hybrid fits their needs.”

Not long after PlainsCapital Bank moved into the Rio Grande Valley,PlainsCapital Market President and VAMOS Board Member Albert Chapa

talked to PlainsCapital Corporation Chairman and CEO Alan B. White about the bank being involved with the 18th annual VAMOS Cup Golf Tournament.

“Mr. white had three questions for me,” Chapa said“Number 1, will it help the community? i said yEs.

Number 2, will it make the Valley a better place to live? i said yEs.Number 3, will it make a difference in someone’s life? i said yEs.

he looked at me and said ‘let’s get it done.’”

Some of those questions White raised have already been affirmed. PlainsCapi-tal recently presented VAMOS a check for $50,000 and is now the presenting sponsor for the 18th annual VAMOS Cup Golf Tournament, to be held Saturday, March 1 at Palm View Golf Course.

That money will be used toward awarding graduating high school sen-iors with a four year renewable scholar-

ship ranging from $8,000 to $20,000. Since its establishment, the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships has awarded Valley students with scholarships worth more than $7.3 million.

Alan B. White, PlainsCapital Corpora-tion Chairman and CEO, spontaneously answered another question when he announced the award of an additional

$5,000 scholarship to Lauro Tijerina, a recent UTPA graduate and VAMOS scholar who is beginning Dentistry School at UT next semester.

“I really didn’t expect that,” said Tije-rina, a first-generation college gradu-ate. “That was incredible. I thought he (Alan White) was talking about the VA-MOS scholarship and then it sunk in. I’m just so appreciative of this opportunity.”

Chapa, who has been a driving force in raising money and reaching the goal of $1 million each year, said that he’s seen the difference the program makes - not just with the scholar-ships given to students (“165 are in the pipeline now” he said,) but also with a unique mentorship program that pairs the new college student with a professional in the same field of study.

“A lot of students are first-generation graduates and col-lege students,” Chapa said. “They may not have or know someone who can answer some questions. This gives them that resource.”

Tijerina said the opportunity to be paired with someone in the same field he was preparing for made him feel that his high school work was not ignored.

“I carry a sense of pride being a VAMOS Scholar,” he said. “The program is more than just financial aid too. It’s very comforting to see others so interested in my success, telling me ‘we believe in you.”

White said that he couldn’t think of a better cause or program than VAMOS to be involved with regarding the Rio Grande Valley Community.

“We are not some huge bank without feelings and where everyone is a number,” he said. “We care for the community. We want to be an active part of the community. This certainly shows a commitment to our new community.”

Sonia Falcon, VAMOS Board President, said every year the challenge gets tougher and tougher to reach the financial goals VAMOS puts in place. With members like Chapa, and a presenting sponsor like PlainsCapital, these goals continue to be met.

“We have to step it up every year - and PlainsCapital cer-tainly stepped it up,” Falcon said. “They believe in our cause and they’ve shown the love they have for the Valley.

“This is about education. It’s education that will make us all rich.”

››Reflections on FAiTh, FAMily, wORK and gOlFWith Lone Star National Bank President

But that score was just icing on the cake.

“Really, I was thinking 'what a beauti-ful thing God has created,” said De-anda, President of Lone Star National Bank. “We're seeing deer on the course and then we see Spanish Bay and all I could think of was how awesome our God is to create these opportunities.

“The golf course is a great way to help remind us about His work, not necessarily our work here – but that all business is supposed to be used to build His kingdom.”

Deanda approaches the most impor-tant aspects of his life with a Christ-first mentality, from family to work and even the golf course. As you talk with him it's easy to see his personal-ity is real – driven, but humble, caring but not weak. Overseeing such a large operation – Lone Star National Bank has 33 locations across South Texas – is clearly a stressful deal. Deanda, however, carries a peace with him that he credits with his faith and support of a strong, loving family.

While God, family and work all come first, Deanda likes to hit the links es-pecially after a long, hard week. And he doesn't mind either way if he's with a group, or out there on his own.

“I’ll go out there at 7 in the morning and they'll call us the early birds or old guys. But to get to the course and see the dew on the grass and see the flag – sometimes totally limp and other times blowing when the southwest wind is going – it's just so peaceful.

“The game itself is a lot like life. Each day the golf course can play to-tally different – but you still have to play it. Then you have your great shots and your bad shots and your flubs. You're in the sand one time, down the middle another. You can go out there and shoot an 80 one day and a 100 the next. All that happens in 18 holes.”

Deanda took up golf at an early age after realizing that baseball probably wasn't going to be in his future. His dad recommended it to him.

“He told me that you get to hit the ball every day, every time. That you're not waiting on anybody and you can play it all your life.

He stopped playing for a while and then picked it back up again when he came to McAllen to start working for then Texas State Bank. He fondly recalls his wife buying a set for him and the family hiding them all over the house. Club by club and room by room he roamed until his set was complete.

And when it comes time to talk about his family, a smile comes across Deanda's face and it's clear that his family is second to none when it comes to what's important.

“I believe that God has a vision and an idea to what and where we are going to be in life and he put my wife there for me to be the most instrumental person in my life,” he said. “She has pushed me and gotten me to levels I never thought I'd reach in my life. She's always supported me and has never said 'don't do this' or 'don't do that.' If I

have a big decision to make she'll just look at me and tell me 'you know what to do – pray about it.'”

His son Robert, 30, is a local attorney who is opening his own firm. He also has a 16-year-old daughter Alyse, a junior at Sharyland High School.

“For the longest time we thought Robbie was going to be a pastor but didn't want to push him one way or another,” Deanda said. “I've learned more about the Word of God from him than anyone. He was the son that never wanted or never asked for anything.

“Golf is about relationships. Over 18 holes you get to learn a lot about the person. You learn their strengths, their weaknesses and their temperament and what gets to them.”

As he gazed out over the majestic Pacific and the ocean breeze swept over him in awe-like fashion, David De-

anda Jr. took a moment to give thanks.Here he was golfing on the world-famous and beautiful

Pebble Beach Golf Course.Not only was he playing on the same course that has hosted

five U.S. Opens and a sixth in 2019, but he was en route to a career-best round of 85.

“Alyse is the same in her own way – but it's all about the shoes and the bows and the makeup. Everything has to match. My wife can sit and talk with them just for hours. These are the peo-ple I surround my self with.”

Deanda has the same approach with the people he surrounds himself with at Lone Star National Bank. He said ex-cellent people with excellent character bring the same type of results.

“I think my officers have heard about the Ms and Ws in every team meeting we've had for the past 20 years. Those are the “me” or “we” people. I don't care if people know who runs Lone Star National Bank, if the organization runs every day and we are serving people like serving God, we're going to get our customers. You have to have a servant's heart in this business and there's a huge difference between me and we.

“Without the customer, the bank is none of this. It's all about relation-ships.”

And that brings it all back to the golf

course, a place where Deanda enjoys hanging with a group of fellow golfers, talking about topics from business to family to faith.

Golf is about relationships. Over 18 holes you get to learn a lot about the person. You learn their strengths, their weaknesses and their temperament and what gets to them.

“I like to have the chance to have a good conversation with a group of guys for a few hours. It's all about building God's kingdom and people don't like to talk about it in this (banking) environ-ment. If you talk about it out there people let loose and sometimes people ask questions. It's a really good thing.

“I learn a lot about people's charac-ter on the golf course – and character is number one in business. Things can get difficult and will get difficult – I as-sure you. Are we going to work through it together or just give up? If you can figure out the character, you can work through those times.”

AbOuT lOs lAgOs: Opened in 2002, the Von Hagge designed golf course ranks regularly as the “Favorite Golf Course” in the Rio Grande Valley in the Readers’ Choice Awards. With sweeping mounds, lakes and bunkers sur-rounding the course, Los Lagos Golf Club provides a tough challenge for any golfer from the back tees, but is also senior and women friendly from the forward tees. Los Lagos is also a fa-vorite among the thousands of Winter Texans who play here each winter.

The public golf course is one of two owned by the City of Edinburg, an “All American City” designated community. The golf course is surround-ed by the Los Lagos devel-opment, and other newly constructed neighborhoods where many of the area’s golfers call home. Price: Chef’s Specials $7.95 Buffet $8.95. Buffet is on Wednesdays and Thursdays and there is a new food and beverage manager.

Description: The Chicken Napoleon is layers of flaky pastry with chicken and herbs, coated with creamy chipotle sauce. The sides were pan seared asparagus and roasted red pota-toes.

Grubber’s Comments: I’m not a “flaky pastry” fan. To me it’s usually dry and bland so when this dish came out I had my reservations. From the first bite, however, this dish threw away any of those misconceptions. The pastry combined perfectly with the chicken and herbs. The chipotle sauce was nice and thick, clinging to the little flakes and adding to the rich flavor of the Chicken Napoleon.

When it came to the asparagus and roasted red potatoes, these were cooked to perfection - filled with flavor and with just the right texture. That’s not always the easiest to do with these two sides, especially asparagus. Even the “hard end” on the asparagus was easily handled and carried just as much flavor as the tips -- very nicely done.

When I saw the $7.95 price, I have to admit I was surprised. The cheapest I thought I would’ve seen attached to this would be $9.95 and that would be on special!

But even if you don’t like the chef’s special for the day, the buffet - from one end of it to the other, filled on the day I was there with amazing looking enchiladas, among other dishes - is more than worth the $8.95. This is a great place to eat fine food at average prices!

Grubber’s Comments: I have to admit this - the breakfast tacos at Tierra del Sol are some of my favorite tacos around - and trust me, I’ve tried more than my share of them. So I was a lit-tle saddened when I found out I was getting a burger. That being said, this burger was terrific and appropriately named. From the toasted and buttered bun to the Monterey Jack and Ameri-can cheese and, of course, a juicy beef patty, this was layer upon layer of fla-vor. Sometimes a burger is best when loaded with condiments. This burger was simple but delicious and the on-ions... oh those wonderful onions....

There’s just something about sautéed onions that just adds so much flavor

to food. The onions on Tierra del Sol’s Juicy Burger definitely followed that pattern. Just the right amount of what seemded to be the sweet vidalia grilled up with Tierra del Sol’s secret blend of spices made this burger and fries a simple but wonderful meal.

JOE POWELL: GOLF PRO, POOL SHARKJoe Powell can talk with you about

your game. He can instruct you on how to hit the ball, how to put spin on it and to think about setting up your next shot.

And he's not even talking about golf.Powell, who has been the golf pro at

The Palms at Mid-Valley in Mercedes since 1995, has more than just a knack for golf. At one point he was also la-beled a “Master” in the billiards world.

“Once I got qualified for the Masters Division, I had to stop,” said Powell. “I had to work for a living.”

Powell finished as high as 33rd in the national championships in Las Vegas. His twin brother, Hank Powell, played a stint on the billiards pro tour.

“We grew up around the race track. Dad was a jockey and then a horse trainer,” Powell said. “We would work in the summer at the track and the track always had pool tables.”

The Powell brothers started playing billiards at age 9. Even then they were playing for a buck a game – and winning more often than not.

“We would just be playing then next thing you know we're running the tables,” Powell said. “We didn't know how. We were just doing it. We learned later how and why things happen, the cause and effect stuff. We just took it from there.

“In college we played in pool tourna-ments five nights a week. Hank took off from there and ended up on tour.”

But the brothers also were skilled on the golf course, leading their Anthony, New Mexico, High School golf team to the state championship in the state's largest class – 4A.

The Powells ended up earning golf scholarships and played at New Mexico State. Joe graduated with a degree in golf course management – New Mexico State was one of only three schools to offer that program.

After graduating, Powell took up a stint as a car salesman – and ended up married to Tiffany, his wife now of 20 years.

“I was waiting for a golf job,” Powell said. “One day her dad came in to buy a car. I didn't sell the car but I met his daughter and got married.”

The Powells have two daughters, Hannah, 12, and Lauren, 10.

“They're both into soccer and bas-ketball,” Powell said. “I'm trying to pull them into golf.”

It might be a good move for the sisters to take their dad up on the golf idea. Powell not only enjoys teaching kids how to golf, he's had recent suc-cess – most notably former Weslaco High golfer Kassandra Rivera.

Rivera, who now plays at Texas Southern University, classified herself as a “C” player in high school. Last year she was ranked as high as sixth in the nation – with the likes of golfers from Florida, Southern Cal, Texas A&M and Notre Dame – and has already won three tournaments this year.

If you ask her, she's quick to point out that it was working with Powell that helped raise her to the next level.

“Kassi never took a lesson until after high school,” Powell said. “The week after she graduated she got serious.”

Powell made some changes in Rivera's swing and said every time he would make a change she would get it instantly and work on the new form.

Between the work ethic and her com-mitment to fitness, Powell said anything is possible for Rivera.

“She's been working out so much that her body type is really solid and it's showing in her game – she's gained probably 40 yards off the tee with her driver. She squats like 305. She's like an Olympian and probably in better shape than any tour player.”

Palms at Mid-Valley Pro went to school for Golf Management, but has plenty other tricks up his sleeve.

opinion on trying out for the LPGA Tour. Powell responded that there's no time like the present.

“She's got so many things going for her – she's such a smart individual. I told her if she wants to play, now is the time to do it. She just needs to get around better players. She's dominating her conference but she's just not around good enough players. She needs to see what those other players are doing.

“I saw the same thing with myself and my brother in the pool world. We hung around some pro players and it made a huge difference. Until you get it between your ears with what these pros are do-ing, it just isn't gonna soak in.”

Powell also worked with Jessica Ta-men, an Edinburg High School golf star who won nine Texas Junior Golf events and was the South Texas Junior Golf Champion from 2009-12. She also was the All-Valley MVP for three years and finished sixth at the state championship in 2011-12. Tamen currently plays for St. Edward's University.

Currently, Powell is working with Har-

lingen High junior Morgan McClaugh-erty who, along with Sharyland's Sabina Pena, are considered the top two high school girl golfers in the Valley.

McClaugherty has already won three high school tournaments this year. She shot a two-day 138 (69-69) at the Har-lingen Invitational at Tony Butler Golf Course, winning the individual medal by 28 strokes.

“Morgan is getting better all the time,

she's gotten better even since Christ-mas,” Powell said. “We've worked the hardest right now on her grip and little parts to her swing. Her short game is solid. We changed her grip over the break because she was at a crossroads and needed to step it up to the next level. She's seeing more distance now and she's excited.”

Powell came to the Palms after a friend told him that some guys he knew had just bought the course and was looking for a pro. Then the course was only nine holes.

“I came here Sept. 1, 1995 and in No-vember the back nine opened,” Powell said. “We opened our new clubhouse in 2009 – that was a big improvement.”

Powell said he doesn't know what the future holds for golf at The Palms. He said he's heard that ownership is look-ing to possibly sell the course.

“That's just how this industry is,” Powell said. “It's always been like that. We joke about it here – we don't buy our bananas green, we might not be around long enough to see them ripen.

“But we're still here.”

about transferring their assets until retirement. In reality, effective estate planning is an ongoing process -- often best begun at a much younger age. At the very least, you should have a will to ensure that your final wishes are known. If you have dependent chil-dren, also consider naming a suitable guardian for them. After determining the value of real estate, cash-value life insurance policies, and assets held in retirement and investment accounts, a more encompassing plan may also be necessary.

Giving Less to the Tax ManWhat can you do to avoid drastically

reducing your estate to meet tax obliga-tions? Life insurance may be a tax-effi-cient way of transferring accumulated wealth. Some types of policies offer current tax benefits and also reduce or eliminate taxes for beneficiaries. And life insurance may also increase the amount passed on to your heirs. Plus, it may also help owners of highly appreci-ated property or small businesses re-tain their assets, rather than be forced to sell those assets to pay Uncle Sam.

Trusts may also be appropriate and

there are many types from which to choose. A grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT), for example, allows you to transfer assets to an irrevocable trust and then receive a yearly annuity for a specific number of years. Once the GRAT is dissolved, the remaining assets pass to the beneficiaries, usually free of estate and gift taxes. Charitable remainder trusts are also popular. They can be arranged so that you -- and, if you desire, a named beneficiary -- receive tax benefits and, in some cases, income during life. What's more, the trust also benefits a charity of your choice. If appropriate, trusts are a key part of the estate planning process.
