To the Editor:I would like to thank Streets Com-

missioner [Clarena I.W. Tolson] and Mayor Michael Nutter for screwing up West Passyunk Avenue with the new renovations ("Roads to some-where," Feb. 16, 2012). They have managed to waste millions of dollars adding new pavements that extend into the street and closed part of the mid-section of 25th Street near Passyunk. Construction is changing lanes on every block from 25th to 16th streets. This has created traffi c jams and will cause accidents and road rage.

I myself and several friends have already witnessed one act of road rage and several near accidents. Who ever thought this would help must have been in la la land? I also would like to know who is going to shovel these new pavements this winter and where are they going to put the snow they shovel if they even get around to shoveling them.

I sent both the mayor and the com-missioner four memos and suggested that they accompany me on a tour so I could show they what they have

done, but neither has bothered to an-swer my e-mails.

It is time to close Pennsylvania’s schools for one week to slow down and potentially stop the spread of in-fl uenza.

This will take a bold and courageous step by a government leader, either using mandate or issuing a state-of-emergency and it must be done sooner than later. It will serve to inhibit the

exponential growth of the virus and keep those that are currently incubat-ing, but have not shown symptoms, from passing the illness to others.

Schools are breeding grounds for such illnesses because of the prox-imity of students during work, rec-reational and meal times. If we can close schools, this will also reduce the amount of children that are un-willingly passing the illness to Mom, Dad and siblings.

Of course, please keep washing your hands.

Weapon found in diaper bagA Southwest Philly woman was arrestedfor bringing a loaded gun into a Lower

A 21-year-old woman went to South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., to sign up for classes,

but never made it past the metal detectors.Kelly Jones planned

to sign up for eve-ning classes in order to obtain her G.E.D. at 10:45 a.m. Jan. 10, but school offi cers pre-vented her from doing so after an X-ray ma-chine detected a .40 caliber Smith & Wes-son handgun with one

live round in the chamber and eight more in the clip inside her diaper bag, Capt. Larry Nodiff of South Detective Division said Wednesday.

“Apparently the screening offi cer look-ing at the imager saw that inside the dia-per bag — it was a pink and white diaper bag — there was a weapon,” Nodiff said. “They stopped everyone from going any further and placed her in custody. Appar-ently, she told them she didn’t know any-thing about the gun and didn’t know it was in the diaper bag.”

Her infant was placed in a family mem-ber’s custody — both of whom were with Jones at the time of her arrest.

“We all had a concern the mom — in the baby’s diaper bag — had a weapon,” Nod-iff, who noted the fi rearm’s serial number was obliterated, said. “[The City’s Depart-ment of Human Services] declined to open an investigation.”

She was charged with fi ve fi rearm vio-lations, including carrying as a prohibited person, without a license, in public, with an altered serial number and on school property, according to court records. Her bail was set at $200,000 Friday, and she has not posted it as of press time.

“The system that’s in place [at Southern] worked and stopped the threat right at the door,” Nodiff said.

Dirty deedsFour men were charged with stealing

houses, most of which were local, and selling them to unsuspecting buyers.

After a three-year District Attorney’s

Offi ce investigation, its Economic and Cyber Crimes Unit discovered 22 deeds for uninhabited dwellings, including 17 South Philly locations — most of which were in Point Breeze — were forged, with the properties allegedly transferred from the actual owners to Andre Ketter aka Os-car Ketter, 42, of the 1500 block of South Dorrance Street; Zachary Stokes, 55, of Society Hill; Elhadi Ibrahim, 48, of North-east Philly, Steven Johnson, 49, of North-east Philly, or a fi ctitious name, according to the District Attorney’s Offi ce.

“The properties were then often sold to innocent purchasers, and in many cases, the purchase price was just $1,” according to a press release.

However, the properties, whose trans-fers and sales date back to 2008, were sold for up to $270,000, according to property records. Each case was fraudulent as the true owners did not agree to transfer the locations’ titles or sign the deeds, accord-ing to the offi ce. Instead, many learned of the transfer upon receiving notifi cation from the Department of Records, prompt-ing them to contact authorities.

The affected properties included 14 in Point Breeze — two on Ketter’s block, as well as one each on the 1200 block of South 22nd Street; 1400 blocks of South Bancroft, Chadwick, Colorado, 22nd and 24th streets; 1600 blocks of South Carlisle and Mole streets; 1800 block of South 19th Street; 2000 block of South Beechwood Street; and the 1900 blocks of Dickinson and Fernon streets. Other neighborhoods affected with one proper-ty included Hawthorne on the 700 block of South 11th Street; Passyunk Square on the 1100 block of South Clifton Street; and South of South on the 2200 block of Kimball Street. Four North Philly loca-tions and a West Philly spot rounded out the 22 properties.

The Passyunk Square site, valued as $17,600, lists Stokes as having purchased for $1 in ’09, but he uses Ketter’s address as his own, according to property records. Ketter is listed as purchasing the Fernon Street locale for $4,000 in ’10.

Demanding passengers A vehicle’s passengers robbed a pair of

men in West Passyunk Sunday night. An 18- and 21-year-old man were on the

2100 block of South 19th Street at 11:30 p.m. when a gray sedan with tinted win-dows passed by them and pulled over, Detective Danielle Tolliver said. While the driver stayed inside the auto, two pas-sengers, one of whom was armed, exited and demanded their belongings, which included cell phones, iPads, a laptop and other items before fl eeing in the vehicle heading west on Passyunk Avenue.

Neither of the men were injured.The gunman was described as black, in

his late teens to early 20s, 5-foot-9, thin, short hair and wearing a navy blue jacket while his accomplice was described as black, in his early 20s, 5-foot-8, thin, un-shaven and wearing glasses.

an East Passyunk Crossing bank Friday. The offender walked into United Savings

Bank, 1945 E. Passyunk Ave., at 4:27 p.m. and handed a 24-year-old employee, who was working by herself, a demand note, Detec-tive Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Di-vision said. It appeared he may have had a gun in his right pocket, and he said, “Let’s go. I will … shoot you.” She read the note, which he demanded back, and

gave him $108 from her drawer. The robber fl ed west on Passyunk, Tol-

liver said. He was described as white, in his mid-

40s, 5-foot-7, thin, unshaven and wearing a navy blue jacket, gray shirt underneath, blue jeans and white sneakers.

Rejected greeting

Police have released surveillance video of a Point Breeze afternoon shooting in hopes of apprehending the gunman.

A 45-year-old man was walking south-bound on the 1600 block of South 24th Street at 2:35 p.m. Jan. 7, according to police. Three unknown men approached him when he reached Morris Street. He extended his hand to greet one of the men, who was wearing a red hat and green jacket, but instead of reciprocat-ing, that man pulled out a fi rearm and began shooting, striking his victim mul-tiple times before fl eeing in an unknown direction.

A detailed description of the gunmen was not available at press time.

Robbery on the go An unknown, armed man held up a

Passyunk Square convenience store Sunday.The man entered 7-Eleven, 1034 Wash-

ington Ave., at 6:04 a.m. with a silver fi re-arm in hand and demanded money from the employees, Detective Danielle Tol-liver of South Detective Division said. They handed over $100. The offender de-manded they lie on the ground while he fl ed eastbound on Washington.

The gunman was described as Hispanic or Asian, age 20 to 25, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, thin; having thick eyebrows; and wear-ing a black hoodie, diamond stud earrings, blue jeans, black sneakers and a black cloth over his face.

“We don’t feel the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania has been completely open,” Pettit, a resident of the 100 block of League Street, said Friday of the Center City-based overseer of 162 congregations. “We have heard so much secondhand in-formation, but what’s certain is that our presence here has ended, or, more appro-priately, has been ended.”

Diocesan property manager Sean Mc-Cauley could not divulge direct details on the reason for the sale or the worship site’s future but noted it is “under agreement to a qualifi ed buyer.” He added that informa-tion could become public soon, with Pettit having heard from various sources that the space, which the City’s Offi ce of Proper-ty Assessment assigns a market value of $261,300, might fetch $500,000.

“We gather for Sunday services, but what’s equally important is what we do during the week, our work with children and households, which makes this leave so diffi cult,” the 64-year member said as she and other believers organized items for Tuesday’s diocesan inspection, with many to go to Episcopal mission churches.

Her haunt began in 1854 as the Boone Street Mission near Howard and Reed streets. A fi re forced a move to the Shif-fl er Hose Co., formerly Second and Reed streets, three years later, with increased enrollment prompting the erection of the present site in ’67. It has hosted success-ful camps, community programs and a thriving three-times-a-week food ministry, which a 2007 partnership with Philabun-dance, 3616 S. Galloway St., expanded. Those activities and the well-attended ser-vices ceased Dec. 31, though discussions with offi cials last summer had Pettit et al believing their exodus would not occur un-til this spring.

“Of course we don’t want to go at all,” the Queen Village dweller, who wed at St. John’s in 1974 and had her two children baptized there, said as she perused a prayer book. “We were told we had a valuable ministry and could stay open until Easter, only then to have to say farewell to one an-other after New Year’s Eve worship, where we had lots of tears, smiles and hugs.”

THE GATHERING INCLUDED fi gures from Emanuel Lutheran, formerly 1001 S. Fourth St., whose pastor, Rev. Cornelius Eaddy, has headed the joint churches for two years. Prior to that, the resident of the 1000 block of South Third Street spent eight years guiding the Queen Village haven, which the Lutheran Church con-secrated July 4, 1869. Changing demo-graphics, a dwindling population and de-

clining monetary support caused the body to shutter the spot more than four years ago, and the merger with its fellow Chris-tian sanctuary soon followed. The twinned destination shared only one similarity with Emanuel Lutheran, and Pettit and Eaddy, fully aware of the costs of maintaining and heating an aged refuge for refl ection, had hoped the diocese would allow faith to matter more than fi nances.

“We have helped so many children, more than a few of whom have gone on to be-come community leaders, and now we wonder who will be their next benefactor, along with the individuals and families who are just beginning to learn they can no longer come to us for nutritional help,” Pettit said.

“I understand dollars and cents,” Eaddy, whose sister, Hilda Hudson, oversaw the food ministry with her husband, Ben-nie Hudson, added. “It’s still just a miscarriage of jus-tice and a travesty to see it go.”

A light rain began fall-ing Friday as members tended to religious articles, loading some for use at Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church, 916 S. Swanson St., which has served as a new site for seeking salvation since the new

year commenced. Pettit inspected assorted church literature, including a sesquicen-tennial booklet tracing history back to the Boone Street Mission days. The 12-page commemorative item accompanied an honorary service May 16, 2004, and fea-tures a reading from the Holy Gospel ac-cording to St. John in which Jesus advises “Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

“I don’t have any fear with regards to the newness,” Eaddy, who has preached at Gloria Dei since the closing took effect, said. “We welcome the chance to build a new community and to receive this oppor-tunity to let God show how good He is.”

trusted teacher to Pennsyl-

vania’s oldest church, which opened in 1677 as a Lutheran facility before adopting Epis-copalian views in 1845.

“There’s something to be said for sta-bility,” Pettit, who spent her entire educa-tional tenure at F. Amedee Bregy School, 1700 Bigler St., and all but a few days of her spiritual journey at St. John’s, said of parting with a site that has yielded so many memories and provided lessons on lessening fears that an individual’s quest for answers in an unstable world must be a solitary experience.

“We have gelled together,” Pam Hack-ney, whose family decades ago became the fi rst African-American family to join St. John’s, said while going over goods in the lower church, where organs longed for fi ngers to exalt her creator. “Gloria Dei will be a change, but to God be the glory no matter where we go.”

The resident of Fourth and Dickinson streets has logged 44 years at St. John’s, a total that makes her proud yet somewhat sad only because she had felt more years would have yielded more successes, with the revitalization of Jefferson Square and its nearly two-century-old park, 300 Wash-ington Ave., resonating.

“Our faith teaches us to be strong, so we will recover from this sadness,” Pet-tit, who has sought in vain for answers from the diocese, said of having to accept its decree. “We’d hoped offi cials would think outside the box, but, like each of us, they’re fl awed. We’re looking to continue our programs elsewhere and welcome any suggestion and every prayer.” SPR

“This community has to continue to have Vare as a resource,” Mininger, of the 400 block of Reed Street, said Tuesday morning during the location’s monthly parent meeting, the fi rst since Superin-

tendent William R. Hite Jr.’s Dec. 13 an-nouncement of what would be the largest constriction in the dis-trict’s history. “This school has taken off in the last few years and deserves chances to keep excelling.”

Ninth-year princi-pal Joanne Capriotti guides 387 pupils at

the 111-year-old location and led the par-ent gathering in a discussion on how to keep Pennsport’s last elementary school from closing, with Our Lady of Mount Carmel, formerly 2329 S. Third St., and Sacred Heart of Jesus, formerly 1329 E. Moyamensing Ave., schools having merged last year with Epiphany of Our Lord School to form Our Lady of Hope School, 1248 Jackson St.

“Not in my wildest imagination had I ex-pected to be on a proposed closures list,” Capriotti said. “What’s most pressing is fi nding out why the district chose us.”

She and her colleagues had expected to receive that knowledge Friday yet re-mained uninformed as they addressed their guests, leaving them to theorize that the building’s age sealed their inclusion. Lacking any feedback, Capriotti could not further plans for a formal rebuttal of claims but vowed to represent Vare at Jan. 29’s Facilities Master Plan community session taking place 6 to 8 p.m. at South Philadel-phia High School, 2101 S. Broad St.

Mention of the Lower Moyamensing secondary site also occurred last month at the district’s North Philly headquarters. In his seventh full month helming the scho-lastic entity, Hite has needed to face sober-ing facts, such as, according to the master plan, a 27 percent enrollment reduction since 2002; 53,000 empty seats; and $300 million borrowed to cover this year’s ex-penses. He voiced plans to push the dis-trict-wide capacity rate from 67 percent to 80 percent with myriad moves that could save his employer $28 million beginning in ’14-’15. In addition to Vare, whose com-munity coordinator, Marge Petronis, said faced closure in the 1970s, once for deseg-ration purposes and one time for suppos-edly being non-fi re-resistant, and Dickin-son Narrows’ Washington, the district,

if given approval from March’s School Reform Commission vote, would relo-cate the Career and Technical Education programs at Edward Bok Technical High School, 1901 S. Ninth St., to Southern and would close Smith Academics Plus, 1900 Wharton St., giving the youngsters Ches-ter A. Arthur, 2200 Catharine St.; George W. Childs, 1599 Wharton St.; and Edwin Stanton, 1700 Christian St., schools as re-placements.

All together, the closings and other al-terations, which Hite devised through suggestions from the Boston Consulting Group, would affect 17,000 students and 2,000 staffers. They also would help the nation’s eighth largest school district to hit his goals of improving academic results and ensuring fi nancial stability. As Vare last year bested the district average in 10 of 12 areas on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, Capriotti knows her charges already have academic acumen.

“I understand the district needs to do something,” she said, “but I just hope it looks at the heart and soul so many pour into this school.”

CAPRIOTTI ENCOURAGED THE parents to be crusaders, lauding their spot’s diversity and autistic support services as boons. The

Pennsport Civic Association and 1st Dis-trict Councilman Mark Squilla, of Front Street and Snyder Avenue, have helped, too, and the parents pledged to call more offi cials to balk at the proposed exodus. Like their Pennsport contemporaries, many of whom have demonstrated in front of Vare, Washington fi gures have found themselves fi ghting the plan, with rallies, appearances at district meetings, social media posts and chats between parents and Principal Omahr Ashe, who declined to comment, leading their opposition.

Although blessed with dedicated stu-dents, who can boast about having topped the district’s marks in nine of the PSSA competencies and achieving adequate year-ly progress on the federal government’s No Child Left Behind law seven out of the last nine years, the site would no longer operate its initiatives, according to the recommen-dations summary, with Vare personnel to assume responsibilities, although to what extent remains unknown. Capriotti antici-pates Hite’s following through with a vow to be transparent, as does fi rst-year Wash-ington teacher Amanda O’Hara.

“I’m saddened by this news not only be-cause of my position, but because of the potential George Washington has,” the autistic support teacher for kindergarten-

ers said of her spot’s potential conversion. “We’re a community of lifelong educators and learners.”

Her site, with 277 students, has, accord-ing to published reports, a sturdier infra-structure than Vare. O’Hara said, though, its fi gurative stability should matter much more than its technical advantages. As the quest for answers from her superiors inten-sifi es, the educator knows that Washing-ton registrants can remain at the location next year or enroll at George W. Nebinger School, 601 Carpenter St. Should the com-mission approve Hite’s recommendations, she heard she and other employees might remain at their present spot or end up transferred to Nebinger, but O’Hara, who fears surrounding schools will not be able to instruct autistic students adequately, yearns to return to Washington, where in less than fi ve months she has developed an unwavering affi nity for its young minds.

“The school district is making a mis-take,” she said. “If you want to continue the excellence and keep safe, high quality academic schools open, George Washing-ton should remain open as well.” SPR

On some days, Kory Aversa’s dog, Buster Brown, can be found running through the Columbus Square dog park, 12th and Reed streets, about a mile north of his home on the 2600 block of South Sartain Street. In fact, most of the time, Aversa can be found out in the area, trying out the latest activity or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the avenue’s establishments.

Realizing his passion for local businesses, the eight-year veteran of the area opened the doors to his own company Aversa PR & Events in March, and al-ready has garnered a list of more than 20 local clients, as well as recogni-tion by industry professionals.

“We have to submit a couple hundred pages of documents, media clips, etc. and send it in. We’re competing against other PR people in town,” Aversa said of the recognition he gar-nered at last year’s Philadelphia Chapter of the Pub-lic Relations Society of America event. “But the President’s Award — the president gets to select one person based on their volunteerism work in the chapter. I didn’t know about that.”

Two weeks prior to the Dec. 4 dinner that saw him win a Pepperpot Award for his public relations work on the Logan Square viral picnic, Dinner en Blanc, Aversa received a call from chapter president Blair Kahora Cardinal no-

tifying him of her selection. Despite the heads up, Aversa was unprepared.

“Unbeknownst to me I had to give a speech, too. I’m new to the chapter and all the others had pages of quotations and examples. I didn’t bring anything,” Aversa, 39, said. “She said she recog-nized my work because I [expanded] the nonprofi t mission of the chapter, and one of her goals was to get nonprofi ts more involved.”

Aversa has taken a proactive role after joining the organization in the last year, spearheading the growth of nonprofi t in-volvement with the introduction of four events that facilitated communication and education among the its members and area nonprofi ts.

“We had a good fi rst year,” he said. In general, it was successful on all fronts

for Aversa. In addition to the awards and recognition, he grew his Lower Moya-mensing-headquartered public relations home-business from scratch and brought in clients that align with his own areas of interest.

“I’m really trying to keep it about the things I fi nd interesting,” Aversa said about his clients as well as his coverage of local events on his blog, Philly Loves

Fun. “I do cover clients [on my blog], but they have the coolest stuff in the city, why wouldn’t I cover them?”

The website, which offi cially launched around the same time he incorporated his business (though it includes previous work from an earlier blog) highlights Philadel-phia events, dining and activities. Though he has received criticisms for focusing on his own stomping ground, he maintains it’s only natural.

“I cover things I know I’m going to go to personally,” he said. “South Philly has grown so much. I moved here seven or eight years ago … I didn’t know it as much as I know about it now. As a resi-dent and homeowner, I think South Philly has exploded with so many things to do.”

HAILING FROM UTICA, N.Y., Aversa made a pit stop in Albany, where he worked in local government, before heading further south. Pursuing an art degree at Mohawk Valley Community College, Aversa found he excelled on the public-facing side of business and switched majors, and schools, before graduating.

“I started my own nonprofi t organiza-tion and brought the AIDS quilt to up-state New York,” Aversa said of his time

at Utica College of Syracuse University, where he received his bachelor’s in 1996, “I was 18- or 19-years-old and I started this whole organization with offi ces at United Way.

“It was very controversial, bringing the AIDS quilt to upstate New York at the time. We received death threats, but it really solidifi ed what I wanted to do. It was a big deal and really special. With a population of 30 or 40,000, we had 6,000 people come out that weekend.”

After some time working for govern-ment offi cials in Albany, Aversa wanted a change of scenery and secured a job in Philly — which he likens to Albany with its cobblestone streets and rich history. He quickly found he fi t right in.

“I call myself a comfort foodie. I like cool, fun drinks and dessert. People who know me, and I’ve been called this be-fore, call me the unoffi cial king of Philly desserts,” he said. “I’m always out eating desserts. I’ll blog about the food, but the main course is really dessert.”

Once here, Aversa spent a little more than a decade in the public-relations arm of organizations such as the Epilepsy Foundation and the Philadelphia Senior Center, before setting off on his own.

“Tiring is the fi rst word that comes to mind,” Aversa said of running his own company. “I’m working all the time, but it’s been a very exciting fi rst year. I have [accumulated] over 20 clients in nine months. I think it’s because I specialize in smaller businesses and some of the nonprofi ts.”

Among his clients are businesses that line East Passyunk Avenue, as well as some who come for a short stay, such as the trapeze school that sets up shop in Center City, and will return this April, offering classes and professional shows. This passion for his clients, it seems, has been the secret to success. To keep up with his growing client list, Aversa has decided to bring on an assistant.

“I want to expand my staff a bit and re-ally continue on the path we set out on [in 2013]. I’ve received offers from other industries, such as fashion, where you can make a lot more money, but I don’t want to get out of my areas of expertise or outside my interest area,” Aversa said. “In reality, I’m doing exactly what I love and I want to do more of it.” SPR

For a while, Penn State had become a feel-good story in the wake of the Jer-ry Sandusky child abuse scandal. The school made administrative changes,

accepted the NCAA sanctions and got it-self a coach in Bill O’Brien who persuad-ed most of his key players not to transfer. The team overachieved. I’m not feeling so good about the feel-good story anymore.

True, O’Brien decided to stick with Penn State and not take a pro coaching job. However, it now appears as if O’Brien used the interviewing process as leverage to get his salary bumped up and to extract some fringe benefi ts for his football program. He also seems to have negotiated a better buy-out deal on his contract that will undoubt-edly make him more attractive in the future should he decide he wants a pro coaching job. It looks very much like O’Brien’s deci-sion to stay at Penn State was more oppor-tunism than self-sacrifi ce on behalf of the team and the university. Enter Gov. Tom Corbett, whose approval rating is right there with Congress and Brussel sprouts.

Corbett announced he is suing the NCAA on behalf of the state. The governor wants the NCAA sanctions against Penn State overturned even though the university and Corbett agreed to the sanctions. Now he says he was only waiting for the football season to end so he didn’t disrupt the sea-son. Corbett has decided to take the action as he is gearing up for re-election.

You would think Corbett would have enough to be concerned about with the State’s high unemployment rate and the cruel cuts he has levied on the safety net for Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citi-zens. Instead what Corbett has done is bring the disgrace of the Sandusky scandal back into the news at a time when it looked as if the university was going to turn the corner. Penn State isn’t part of the lawsuit, but suddenly fi nds itself thrust into Cor-bett’s political aspirations. ...

Donald Trump is back with more birth certifi cate news. He has responded to a challenge by comedian Bill Maher who offered $5 million if Trump could prove he is not the offspring of one of his par-ents having sex with an orangutan. Trump has provided his birth certifi cate and has demanded Maher to pay up. I believe the Bronx Zoo forged Trump’s birth certifi -cate. Think about La Donald’s strange or-ange hair. In all fairness to Trump, orang-utans have a better sense of irony. ...

Anti-abortion advocates are frustrated because abortion is constitutional. What to do, what to do? The strategy has involved making it more diffi cult to get an abortion. Here are some suggestions Corbett might want to consider before allowing a wom-an to have an abortion:

1) She must be isolated in a room with a TV that has only has the religious cable channel ETWN.

2) The abortion can only take place in a trailer with candlelight and be presided over by a legally blind midwife.

3) She must read Jenny McCarthy’s “Bad Habits: Confessions of a Recover-ing Catholic.” I watched Jenny on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and she almost drove me into a confessional.

In addition to Pennsylvania, seven states in the Deep South are considering enact-ing these requirements into law. The South also is considering requiring the woman to listen to 48 hours of Toby Keith prior to qualifying for an abortion. Polls indicate 98 percent of women in such cases would opt for having the baby. ...

I resent the criticism leveled at 73-year-old sportscaster Brent Musberger. In case you missed it, Musberger openly ooohed and aaahed as the TV camera showed the girlfriend of the Alabama quarterback, a former Miss Alabama. I want to remind folks that we 70-something folks can still admire great art even if we can’t paint like we used to. Actually, I skipped the game and stared at a freeze frame of this beauty the rest of the night. The real insult is why do quarterbacks always get the girl? Are these women as shallow as we men? ...

How about all this fuss raised about President Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of State, Chuck Hagel? Hagel once ranted against the tremendous clout of the pro-Israel lobby in Congress. Hagel called it the “Jewish” lobby and subse-quently apologized because some viewed the term as anti-Semitic. The Israel lobby is the accurate terminology because it is not restricted to Jews. The lobby also is composed of non-Jews, especially Chris-tian evangelicals who see Israel as key to the biblical prediction of The End of Days. As if to prove his point, Hagel recently caved to the lobby and swore his unquali-fi ed support for the State of Israel.

I love Israel, but I don’t even give my “unqualifi ed support” to the government in this country. In fact, there is more dis-sent in Israel about their politics than here at home where even the slightest deviation from the Netanyahu government’s poli-cies is considered heresy. You think Israeli politicians have to take an oath to provide unqualifi ed support for every position of the U.S. government?

Kathryn Bigelow may have failed to land an Oscar nod this year, but the director still scores with “Zero Dark Thirty,” a riveting, modern war epic

charting the 10-year quest to catch (and kill) Osama bin Laden. It’s rare to see a fi lm about recent headlines that’s this stir-ringly comprehensive.

Bigelow and her team (including Mark Boal, the screenwriter who penned her last triumph, “The Hurt Locker”), were reportedly granted access to classifi ed federal documents, giving them exclusive insight into this all-too resonant tale. At nearly three hours, the movie takes you from post-9/11 unease to the killshot heard ’round the world, and it’s a big, tough, en-veloping fi lm experience.

At the center of it is comely starlet Jes-sica Chastain, who plays hard-nosed CIA agent Maya, a woman who’s devoted her professional life to bin Laden’s cap-ture. As Chastain stated when nabbing a Golden Globe for her efforts, Maya is a stand-in for Bigelow herself, emerging as a titan in a male-dominated discipline, and, in many ways, showing others how it’s done. “Zero Dark Thirty” doesn’t have the same white-knuckle suspense as “The Hurt Locker,” but it feels both larg-er and more personal, its plucky heroine no doubt refl ecting more of Bigelow’s sensibilities.

Bigelow’s taken some heat for her depic-tion of torture, as Maya and her partner, Dan (Jason Clarke), resort to tough tactics to gain answers, but more than anything, what Bigelow offers is her brand of un-fl inching honesty, less political than frank and forthright. The approach also is present

in the director’s aesthetic, which often suc-ceeds in dropping you square into the ac-tion, be it set in a board room or a desert.

Like so many awards-season contend-ers, “Zero Dark Thirty” was cloaked in secrecy for months, with details kept quiet right down to its time of release. For once, the climbing anticipation is justifi ed, as this is a movie that tosses in common in-gredients, and yet refuses to compromise. It’s a fi lm that may well have achieved its goal of being the defi nitive narrative ac-count of a momentous, historical saga.

Anyone looking for a maddeningly wild movie shouldn’t pass up Lee Daniels’ “The Paperboy,” a bayou crime thriller more notable for its shocks than any por-tion of its plot.

Known in some parts as the fi lm in which Nicole Kidman pees on Zac Efron’s jellyfi sh stings, it’s a sensationalistic romp with surprises aplenty. Co-starring Mat-thew McConaughey, it might be trash cin-ema, but it’s one of 2012’s most unforget-table fl icks. SPR

tomatoes, beans and chick-en in a large saucepan. Heat, stirring occasionally, until the soup reaches a boil. Continue to cook for an additonal fi ve minutes. Remove from the heat. Cover and let stand for about 15 minutes.

I have wanted to review Will BYOB ever since it opened during the dog days of summer but the windows were open on brutally hot nights, so I made a note to

wait until the weather cooled down.Will is the newest addition to East

Passyunk Avenue and joins a list of some of my favorite restaurants. Bring your best bottle of wine and enjoy Chef Christopher Kearse’s joy of French fare, which he tweaks in his kitchen laboratory.

The décor is simple with green walls, a few mirrors, black tables and chairs set with linen napkins. The acoustics and lighting were perfect during our visit, which is a plus these days.

The winter menu is in full swing. Kearse uses local, seasonal ingredients and keeps the menu focused. Slightly warm French bread arrived with a small dish of softened herb butter. It’s these touches that contrib-ute to a preview of a fi ne meal.

Two large shrimp, heads intact, ($14) were gloriously fl avorful napped with a naturally reduced sauce. Kearse’s sauces are big, bold and rich in fl avor but never overwhelm a dish. The texture is light and enhancing.

I asked our server about the artichoke appetizer ($13), and she explained it as a modern twist on a French classic veg-etable stew. Kearse used baby artichokes that were sliced in half and braised just right. Even the outer leaves were tender and served as a surprising foil for the veg-etables that kept the artichokes company on the plate.

Colorful heirloom carrots are the new Brussels sprouts. Kearse had a fi ne hand here. There were small, deep orange and

yellow carrots and an almost deep purple-red, long, thin strip,which looked like ra-dicchio but imparted a toothy crunch. Two tiny, and I mean tiny, sweet red whole on-ions were marvelous in fl avor and texture. I never ate anything like them. Our server described them as small balls that pop in your mouth oozing a fl avorful liquid. They were cold, so I assume they could have been frozen with liquid nitrogen. Still, the intriguing balance of fl avors, colors, textures and ingredients made this a memorable dish.

Scallops from the Jersey Shore ($26) are small in size, but have a slightly sweet fl avor that I prefer to their Maine cous-ins. Three scallops were seared yet still translucent inside. I particularly liked the fl avor of the golden crust on top of each mollusk. Some caulifl ower was roasted in the oven and included with my din-ner. But the foam, which served as a base for the scallops, intrigued my taste buds. Chefs like to experiment with ingredients, packing them into stainless steel canisters equipped with nozzles which turn them into light airy foam. This one was creamy, as if a chef took a seafood mousse and made it lighter.

If there was a true star of the evening it was the crescent duck ($27), which our server described as “a meat-driven plate.” It could also have been called duck three ways.

A fat duck leg was prepared confi t, sitting in its tasty, juicy fat until it was gently roast-ed. The breast meat was hearty, juicy and packed with fl avor. It also was very tender

and cut easily with a butter knife. Some of the meat was ground and formed into a sau-sage which would have made a tasty base for a duck lasagna. This dish was the most satisfying as our previous courses were so much lighter. Edward said he would have liked some vegetables with his diner, like turned potatoes roasted in duck fat.

One dessert jumped out from the menu. I have not savored a fi nancier since I was last in Paris. This is a cake in the bank-er’s style, which French business people can pick up and eat on their way to work. Will’s version ($8) consisted of a small baton of pistachio cake served with a dol-lop of tarragon ice cream. I thought the cake was a bit on the dry side, but enjoyed

the savory use of herbs in the ice cream.Will BYOB is a fi ne addition to East

Passyunk Avenue. I think the portions were small (except for the duck), the scal-lop entrée was too monochromatic but the service was fl awless.

When Frank and Deb Barbato took over Bomb Bomb BBQ Grill and Italian Res-

taurant, 1026 Wolf St., in the 1990s, they decided to add a southern twist to couple with their Italian cuisine. Instead of being just another run-of-the-mill Philly barbecue spot, the pair wanted to take an award-winning approach to their dishes, so they packed their bags and headed south to the Williamsburg, Va. area.

The learning vacation served as the foundation to a success

story that has included their res-taurant earning two fi rst-place distinctions for Best Ribs at the annual Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge, which is held every summer at Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way. A Zagat survey also rated the Lower Moyamensing establishment one of Philly’s top-fi ve barbecue restaurants.

Deb and Frank continue to share the cooking responsibili-ties with longtime employees and fellow chefs Fred Tup-per and Gordon Stokes. Frank Jr., Frank and Deb’s son, runs

the Glassboro. N.J., location. While some chefs might keep their award-winning recipes top secret, the couple has de-cided to share the Barbecue Sauce and Rub recipes that make their ribs and chicken taste so good. SPR

On the television sitcom “Seinfeld,” the character George Costanza shunned intensely intellectual pursuits.

To the good fortune of The Academy at Palumbo boys’ basketball team, 1100 Catharine St., fi rst-year coach Tim Castan-za favors mental endeavors, and the Griffi ns have used the head man’s calls for brain power to return themselves to contender status, with Jan. 10’s 51-43 home win over A. Philip Randolph High School giving the Hawthorne-based ballers a share of the Division D lead.

“I see the whole team as a feel-good story because my guys push themselves and take great pride in their develop-ment,” Castanza, of Fourth and Pember-ton streets, said after the triumph, which boosted his squad’s overall mark to 9-6, including a 6-1 league mark, with the lone blemish coming in a Jan. 2 road tilt against the co-division pacers, the Kens-ington Tigers.

The Queen Village resident serves as the director of the seven-year-old school’s special education department and as a philosophy teacher. The athletes have ben-efi ted from his latter role, as it has allowed them to strike a balance between successes and setbacks.

“I would say we have much better chem-istry this year,” co-captain Calvin Francis, a senior guard and three-year starter, said. “We’re taking matters game by game, even minute by minute.”

The West Philadelphian has not needed much cerebral support, as he holds a 3.9 grade point average and knows amassing victories requires courting team unity in-stead of personal plaudits.

“Calvin is a quiet contributor who’s all about working for everything,” Castanza said of the sure-handed fi gure, whom he also lauded as a true student of the game.

Francis received a bitter education last season, as the Griffi ns, who emerged in his sophomore year as Division D’s co-cham-pions, along with the Universal Audenried Charter High School Rockets, 3301 Task-

er St., on their way to a 19-3 campaign, registered a 7-15 mark as they struggled to adapt to Division C opposition. Their decline sent them back to Division D, and with the graduation of guard Demetrius Davenport, who tallied 1,009 points, and the departure of coach Steve Gittleman, whose units made three playoff appear-ances, few could have blamed them if they had begun this year feeling fearful. The mythologically-named charges, though, have bought into the positive philosophies that Castanza espouses.

“We all want to work hard here,” leading scorer and senior forward Jameal Tucker said. “It’s been fun to watch the commit-ment bring great results.”

Another West Philadelphia inhabitant, the four-year presence aids Francis as the squad’s other captain and, like his fellow senior, he excels in the classroom, carrying a 3.8 grade point average. The two set out to ground the Raptors and continue their push for the postseason, where their program has yet to celebrate at the fi nal buzzer.

“Play as if it’s February,” Castanza said to his team during the Randolph game. “Rattle them, and play our game.”

HIS PLAYERS COULD have used a griffi n’s talons in the fi rst quarter against Ran-dolph, as their hands poorly handled the ball. Managing only four fi eld goals, they needed tight defense to keep the visitors from racing to a comfortable cushion and received two swats from junior center Mike Chau as highlight helpers. Trail-ing 10-8 after eight minutes of action, the Griffi ns maintained their rapid pace for the second quarter and relied on their athletic

edge and size to create high percentage opportunities.

Tucker, who has been drawing scouts to watch his 6-foot-5 body show off its ver-satility, including a game-day visit from a Chestnut Hill College representative, used his low-post skills to collect nine points, and sophomore guard Shafi Meachum contributed five. Heading into halftime with a 30-25 edge, they knew their defense required slight tinkering, as the guests had only a pesky rim to blame for their layups and short shots not falling.

“We’re playing well, but we aren’t play-ing well enough to be able to last into February,” Castanza said of the shortest month, which has given Palumbo the lon-gest list of regrets.

Sound defense kept both outfits from making much noise in the third, with the opposition gaining better looks yet failing to make them count. The Griffi ns stretched the lead to 40-33 and relied on seven foul shots and a pair of fi nal frame fi eld goals to seal the verdict.

“So many schools have pure basketball players,” Castanza, who guided Univer-sity City for two years before heading to Palumbo, said. “We have kids who play basketball, and there’s a big difference in that because our work ethic is that much more selfl ess and intense.”

“This is the best team I’ve been on in my time here,” Tucker, who has been a part of two playoff participants, added after scor-ing 16 points. “I love being among guys who will do whatever for the benefi t of the program.”

Francis, who chipped in seven points and whom Castanza said desires to be an engineer, hopes to design a lengthier run for his postseason-hungry peers.

“If we stay as dedicated as we’ve been, we can defi nitely go as far as we want,” he said.

The Griffi ns notched a double-overtime road win Friday, dumping Division B’s Engineering and Science Engineers, 56-49, behind Meachum’s 17 points, and cut the hopes of the visiting William Sayre Sabers Tuesday in a 59-47 win, with Tucker de-positing 18 points. They will travel today to face the William Palmer Charter Lions (5-1 in league play). SPR

In accordance with Chapter 271 of the Municipal Solid Waste Regulations of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Covanta 4Recovery Philadelphia LLC hereby gives public notice of its

application for permit reissuance of the existing permit for 58th Street Transfer Station from TransRiver Philadelphia, LLC to CO-VANTA 4RECOVERY PHILADELPHIA, LLC with no other changes

proposed at the transfer facility. The 58th Street Transfer Station is a municipal waste transfer facility located at 2209 South

58th Street in the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County and operating under Pennsylvania Department of Environmental

Protection (PADEP) Solid Waste Permit Number 101477. The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia County officials may submit comments on the permit re-issuance application to PADEP within 60 days of PADEP’s receipt of the permit re-issuance application,

which is anticipated to occur no later than January 11, 2013, recommending conditions upon, revisions to, and approval or disapproval of the permit re-issuance application with specific reasons described in the comments. PADEP will also accept

and consider comments from the public during the permit review period. Comments may be sent to The Regional Manager, Waste Management Program, Department of Environmental Protection,
