Ecuador is the second smallest country in South America, but is perhaps one of the most diverse. It encompasses the Pacific Ocean, the lush Amazon, Andean volcanoes and of course the stunning Galapagos Islands. A paradise for nature lovers and outdoor sportspeople alike, Ecuador, like Peru, is rich in colonial and indigenous history. The picturesque town of Quito was sits 2800m above sea level and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978. This stunning colonial town boasts a 800ms historical centre, making it the largest in the Americas. Walking the narrow streets of the “old town” is enough to transport you to another time and place. The ‘new town’, however is modern enough to satisfy the most Western of travellers, though most visitors tend to stay amongst the relaxed and colourful streets of the historic centre.

Page 40: South Latin America

ClimateSouth and Latin America is a massive area spanning both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Therefore the climate varies enormously. Peru, Brazil and Mexico enjoy a pleasant climate year round and obviously the extreme south is not recommended during winter. The seasons for Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala are the opposite of ours, whilst Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Argentina and Brazil are the same as ours.

When to goGenerally the most popular time for travel is October – May, although Mexico, Peru and Brazil can be visited year round. Winter months (June- August) are best avoided in Patagonia and many attractions and hotels simply close during this time. Check with us about the best time to visit.

LanguageSpanish is the official language of the majority of South and Latin America. Portuguese is spoken in Brazil and English and French are spoken in the smaller, northern countries in South America. Wherever possible, try to speak the native language. Your hosts will love you for trying!

CurrencyEach country uses its own currency and it is recommended to purchase local currency once there. Cash can easily be exchanged at currency exchange booths (which generally give a better rate than the bank) and ATMs are widely available. If you are carrying cash, make it $USD! This is the most readily exchanged and may even be accepted as payment. Note: this does not apply to Cuba. The best currency to carry is the Euro.

Credit cardsCredit cards are widely accepted, with Visa and Mastercard being the cards of choice. American Express is also widely accepted. When checking into hotels, clients are often asked for a credit card to cover incidental charges, and asked to sign a blank charge slip. This is a common practice and should not be viewed with suspicion. Ensure to ask for a copy upon check out. Note: this does not apply to Cuba. Credit cards are not widely accepted and any cards affiliated with US banks will not be accepted at all. It’s best to take cash to Cuba.

TippingTipping 10% to 15% is customary in South and Latin America. Usually you are not expected to tip a taxi driver. In general, tip service people (hotel maids, bellboys and waiters). Keep small bills and coins for tipping purposes.

Staying healthyA very simple way to ruin your South and Latin America holiday is to become paranoid about getting sick. Use common sense and follow these guidelines: always wash your hands before eating; drink plenty of nonalcoholic fluids and do not become dehydrated! Drink bottled water; ease into local eating and drinking habits.

ToursFor your own convenience, it is important for you to book your transfers and tours in advance. Time factor is important once you have arrived in South and Latin America, and by advance booking, you can avoid a lot of hassles and time consuming arrangements. Booking in advance means service with the right and professional people, as well as a good deal of savings, since we are the official representatives of the top tour operators in South and Latin America.

What to packCasual dress is appropriate for nearly all occasions. However, there are particular customs regarding appropriate dress for certain situations: bathers should not be worn away from swimming pools and beach areas; shorts should not be worn when entering a church; don’t forget to pack sunglasses, suntan lotion, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, insect repellent, camera and film, a pocket sized English/Spanish dictionary, a small first-aid kit, and last of all – your spirit of adventure and sense of humour! Electrical currents are either 220 or 110, depending on the country. If you do take electrical appliances with you, you will need to take an international adaptor.

TransfersGround operators are there to assist and guide you should you be in need of English speaking assistance. In a foreign speaking country, the transfer operators are a welcome support, not just as a means of getting about, but they will help you in case you experience problems. You can always count on the transfer operator as your friend in South and Latin America.
