Startearly. It’s important to build a foundation of physical literacy. The early years are the best time to start. You can continue to build these skills through life.

Be active for life. It’s proven that people who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life.

Have you heard of the term physical literacy?

We don’t take the term lightly.

Physical literacy means developing the foundational skills and confidence required to participate in regular physical activity, play a sport or get to the podium. YMCA programs include intentional activities that help build physical literacy to allow your child to participate in whatever activity or sport they choose.

Developing physical literacy skills is progressive, and different at each developmental stage.

10Ten ways to encourage your kids to love to move.

8

IT’S A FACT.70% of Canadian children aged 3 - 4 years get their recommended 180 minutes of daily activity.

But only 14% of children aged 5 - 11 years and 5% of youth aged 12 - 17 years get their recommend-ed 60 minutes of daily activity.

5

9

10

When kids are moving, they are developing physical literacy at the same time. The love of moving needs to be taught and encouraged, exactly the same way we teach and encourage our children to love to read.

Help your child move early. Make moving a natural part of your child’s day right from the beginning. Encourage your child to crawl, stand, walk and play.

Build physical activity into your family’s daily routine. Engage in some form of physical activity with your family every day. It doesn’t matter what the activity is, as long as you are moving together. To start, make a family activity goal of 15 minutes per day.

Lead by example. What’s your active routine? Do you practice yoga, play tennis, walk the dog, or work out at the gym? Being an active role model is one of the best things you can do to encourage your kids to be active.

Power your transportation. Walk, run, bike, scooter, or skate your way from point A to point B. Encouraging your kids to power their own transportation from an early age will get them into a healthy habit they won’t think twice about.

Expose your kids to a wide variety of activities and sports. Kids who specialize in a specific sport too early often get burned out. It’s important to let kids try lots of different activities so they can develop a wide range of skills and discover what they enjoy. With a few exceptions, most sports do not require specialization until kids are in their early teens.

Praise but don’t push. Notice when your child is enjoying an activity and cheer them on. Always keep things positive from the sidelines so they understand that you value what they are doing, but you aren’t so invested in it that they feel pressure.

Active for Life is a non-profit organization committed to helping parents raise happy, healthy, physically literate kids. For more tips like these, please click on this activeforlife.com link.CLICK HERE to learn more about physical literacy.

Focus on fun. Most kids aren’t ready for competition until they are at least 10 years old. For kids under ten, fun activities and non-competitive games keep things stress-free and allow them to have success no matter what their skill level.

Spend time outdoors. It’s proven that kids who play outside take 35% more daily steps. Create opportunities that encourage outdoor play every day.

Choose a daycare or pre-school that incorporates physical activity. Parents should look for a daycare that dedicates time to encouraging age-appropriate movement every day. Children need lots of opportunities to move and develop basic skills like running, jumping, hopping, and skipping during both structured and unstructured play.

Encourage your child’s school to incorporate physical activity in the curriculum. Every school would benefit from a physical education specialist who knows how to engage children of all skill levels and abilities, and can help them develop their love of moving. Physical literacy is as important as reading literacy. For kids, both quality and quantity is important when it comes to being physically active.

Moving with your family every day will help your kids value physical activity, promote physical literacy, and keep everyone happy and healthy.

Children with physical literacy skills have the ability and confidence to be active for life.

SPRING/SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE

THANK YOU MELCOR DEVELOPMENTS

FROM LEFT: BROOKE MELTON, ANDY MELTON, EVAN HAZELL, HELENE WEIR, BRIAN BAKER

YMCA Calgary will be forever grateful to Melcor Developments for their support. Calgarians will be too.

YMCA Calgary President and CEO Helene Weir says Andy Melton’s – and Melcor’s – commitment demonstrates a matchin values.

The words honesty, caring, responsibility and respect hang prominently inside the Melcor YMCA atCrowfoot,” she says. “Andy and the team at Melcor embody those values and put them to good use creatingcommunities and investing in the success of kids, families and everyone who lives and works within them.

In a significant boost to its Power of Potential Campaign, YMCA Calgary received a $1-million donation from Melcor Developments Ltd., celebrating the strong relationship between the YMCA, Melcor and its founding family, the Meltons.

In recognition of this substantial and meaningful gift, YMCA Calgary has renamed its Crowfoot YMCA facility in northwest Calgary as the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot.

THE POWER OF POTENTIAL is a $30 million fundraising campaign with a goal to give more Calgarians a place to belong, grow, thrive and lead.

Operating three new facilities in partnership with the City of Calgary, will help us respond to the growing demand for our programs and services.

The Melton family and Melcor Developments are strong supporters of the Power of Potential Campaign and YMCA Calgary.

LEARNING

Our childcare centres use the YMCA Playing to Learn Curriculum. This curriculumisdesignedtomaximizechildren’s learning by actively engaging them in small group, play-basedexperiencesthataredevelopmentally appropriate..

Activities encompass all developmental areas and support children with school readiness and to become life-long learners. Program options include onsite enhancement activities and fieldtrips for older children.

SOCIAL

Relationships form the foundation for all that occurs within the childcare setting. Children learn about YMCA Calgary’s four core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Children practice behaviours that support social skill development, emotional competence and community engagement.

HEALTHOur program teaches children to value health, nutrition and activity. We encourage and learn about healthy eating and dedicate time throughout each day to incorporate and encourage age-appropriate movement. Through intentional activities, we begin to build the foundation for physical literacy (read more about physical literacy on pages 4 and 5).

We’ve been in the childcare business for more than 20 years. Our philosophy has remained the same.OUR PHILOSOPHY.

WE’RE OPENING TWO NEW CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRES.

Located in the Remington YMCA Health, Fitness and Aquatics facility
