LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Check out our website southgranvilleseniors.ca for updates and announcements! Or connect with us and share pictures, stories,

videos, and events on Facebook and Twitter (@sgseniors).

Dear members,

The year’s end always brings with it a tremendous sense of accomplishment. It’s amazing how much has been achieved by our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors and by you, our valued members, in 2017. We have had a happy, busy year here at the South Granville Senior Centre. More seniors have been joining us and participating in our programs and services. The fact that we have approximately 1,500 senior visitors per year is proof that we are the heart of the Fairview community and a place for seniors to connect, make friends, and stay engaged.

We are very fortunate to have compassionate and hardworking people at our centre. Alex, Tania, and Maria Jose, your commitment and your passion for the work you do is truly appreciated by all. To our 230 volunteers, those ordinary people with extraordinary hearts who give so much of their time to the Centre: Thank you for always lending a hand. A heartfelt thank you to the Board of Directors for their guidance and support. To the wonderful 450 members who participate and support our programs and to the amazing program facilitators who contribute their skills to make these excellent programs possible, thank you for your involvement. Last but not least, a warm thank you goes to our donors, whose generosity helps us to keep the doors of the Centre open for everybody.

New challenges are awaiting us in 2018. At the end of 2015, the Centre learned that its current site is scheduled for redevelopment and that the Centre will need to relocate. Timelines and a new site have not yet been determined, but we are optimistic that we will be able to find a new space in the near future. Cornerstone Planning Group was contracted in 2016 to develop a High Level Functional Plan to describe our needs and it was submitted to the City of Vancouver. Over eight different focus groups were organized and members were asked to contribute their thoughts and ideas about a new location. The results of this study will be used as a basis for space requirements for the Centre during the design phase. (Cont’d on next page)

VOLUNTEER MEETING Our next volunteer meeting will be on Monday, January 29th, 10:00am-12:00pm. In addition to our regular meeting, Board

Member Beryl Petty will present a workshop on Conflict Resolution.

(Cont’d)… Funding is a major issue for our potenal growth and expansion.

The lack of stable, secure, long term grants from all three levels of

government affects our ability to ensure connuity in our programs and

to provide a long-term plan for our centre. The senior populaon is

growing and government funding has dropped significantly over the past

year as funders are changing and ghtening their funding criteria. Many

new grants favour one-me projects over providing long-term operaonal

funding for connuing programs. We are addressing these issues by

creang more partnerships and cooperang with other seniors’

organizaons, businesses in the community, schools, civil organizaons,

and services providers.

I would like to invite everybody to join us in our efforts to keep the Centre

open in the years to come. Help us to keep it the vibrant and beauful

community that we have been able to maintain since its creaon in 1972.

With love,

HOLLY BAZAAR 2017

Holly Bazaar 2017

Margaret Fiddes (seated), and Priscilla (left) and Luna (right) all volunteered with the Holly Bazaar lunch service. Luna explains: “I like to help, and this is close to home. I’m glad I came!” Priscilla grins, and adds: “She got me to come with her. And I like it a lot more than doing homework!” Big laugh. Margaret is a retired Telus employee: “This is my third year with the Holly Bazaar. I like it here, it’s a very friendly place, with a very up-beat atmosphere. If I lived a bit closer, I’d be here regularly as a member.”

Marlene and Lavelle, Baking and Jam Table: “We like doing things together!”

Chantal Poirier (with ironing board): “I’ve been a volunteer since yesterday! My partner, Charles, accepted a job here in Vancouver, so in June we moved here from Montreal. I looked online to see volunteer possibilities, I liked this one because it fits my schedule, it is in our neighbourhood, and I like working with seniors.”

Volunteer Maureen MacDonald, showing items to interested visitors. One young woman laughs, points to her friend, and says, “I came with my friend, it’s her idea!” Her friend explains: “This is my third year to come to the Bazaar. I love the jewelry and the jam. I came to the Silent Auction and I got a whole dinnerware set.”

A young woman waits while her mum tries on a knitted beret at the Mustard Seeds table: “I saw this bazaar on Facebook and decided to come, and to bring my mum. I liked the idea, it was local, community-based, seemed like it would be friendly and non-commercial — sort of like when I was a kid, you know?”

Eduardo Meneses, Electronics Table: “This is the first time I’ve volunteered for anything with the Seniors Centre, but I am familiar with it, because the Spanish community is here. I’m enjoying myself today! I love talking with people, being part of all this activity.”

First-time visitor Onya shows off her acquisitions: A big bag, a wall plaque, and a beautiful sterling silver brooch, already pinned to her coat. “I googled online, to see where there were Christmas bazaars this year. Yes, there are lots! I chose this one because it’s right here in my own neighbourhood. And look what I’ve found! I’m especially happy about this brooch.”

Raffle Tickets Table Volunteers Suzanne Trautmann (L) & Rae Collins. Suzanne and Rae are both regular Centre volunteers, and also veteran Holly Bazaar volunteers. Suzanne says, “I volunteer in Reception Tuesday mornings, and Rae volunteers for the afternoon shift. We like to work together. Why also volunteer for the Holly Bazaar? We love to collect money!” (Big laugh all around)

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, as well as the community members who donated items and came to shop at the

Bazaar! With your help, we raised $10,000 for the Centre!
