Jacaranda Children’s Party and Drama group It was great to see some of SGHS’s drama
group help with the children’s party for Jacaranda on Saturday morning. However,
it may have been difficult to recognise them in their outfits! The students, who were Kirsten Knight, Accarlia Davey,
Bianca and Cody Staggard, Casey Moore and Isabelle Lancaster, endured the heat,
being unable to see where they were going and even being bailed up by a dog. Also on the agenda were punches, high
5’s, hugs and a couple of tumbles, all instigated by young children, as well as
lots of photos, the Macarena and the Chicken Dance. Well done!
The whole gang
Dragonboat Regatta Again the South Grafton team put in
a valiant effort in this year’s regatta. The Year 11/ 12 crew was consistent in
its efforts, by coming fourth in every race, against CVAS, Maclean HS and 2 Army Cadets’ teams. CVAS has been
consistently first, so the challenge will be one for next year to swap places!
A team fashion effort! Well done!
Fundraiser for the Cooper family
On Saturday, 19 November a Helping Hands trivia night will be held at the
GDSC as a fundraiser for the Cooper family. Austin, Elliot, Lewis and Bayden

3200. Prizes can also be donated for the night by contacting Arthur Lysaught via

Bandanna Day was a great success and
the SRC raised $342 for CanTEEN. The SRC would like to thank everyone who
bought bandannas to support such a worthy cause.
The SRC is also preparing for their
planning day, to be held on 8 November, where they will set their goals for 2017.
Attendance is on the rise! Attendance certificates are currently being
presented to students who have had over 94% attendance, which equates to 3 days
or less absent during the term. Please note that students’ attendances are not penalised for absence on Jacaranda
Thursday.
The Principal will be holding a tea party soon, to acknowledge all students who
have had 4 days or less absence throughout the entire year.
SMILE On Wednesday 2
November 2016, a group of Year 10 students
participated in the first training day for SMILE. SMILE
stands for Support, Mentor, Inspire, Listen and Encourage, which also represents the programs five core values at South
Grafton High School. These students received valuable information about how
to mentor younger students and were very positive about the future
of SMILE at our school.
Guest speakers came to speak
with the students about mental health
issues impacting
on young people and this was
facilitated by a professional from
Headspace with many years’ experience in supporting young people in the area and a wealth of
knowledge and education to share with the students. They also learnt the basics
of mentoring, used photo language to discuss and share their ideas and gained valuable insight into their mentoring role.
Sarah Landrigan also returned to speak with students about the program and how
it operates at SGHS. SMILE is a great initiative to be part of and with the great students volunteering and showing their
interest it will continue to grow and gain
momentum in the school community. Students will undertake further
training early next year and will be paired up
with a Year 7 student. Thankyou to all
students who participated and
brought their positive attitudes and
great ideas. Thankyou also
to Mrs Fisher and Ms McGregor who also helped out on the day.
Djehuti Smart and MultiLit End of Year Celebration
Last Thursday more than 40 students, along with their families and
staff, attended the SGHS Djehuti Smart and MultiLit Awards ceremony held in the library. Our students were involved in
hosting the event - giving the Acknowledgement of Country, speaking to
the audience about their experiences with the programs – even Mrs Wood’s Accelerated Hospitality class made the
delicious SGHS Djehuti Smart/MultiLit professionally presented cake.

Frontiers Showcase
On Tuesday 25 October 2016, a group of Year 9 students participated in the Youth Frontiers Showcase. This was an amazing
program for students to be a part of and was the result of over 6 months hard work
dedicated to an issue that they feel strongly about in the Clarence Valley. Myra Cross, Bianca Staggard, Kirstian
Knight, Lex Bagster, Scott Rose and Matt Dalton each worked tirelessly with
mentors to complete their fantastic projects. Some included girls roll call rugby, cleaning of the memorial park
cenotaph and maintaining our sporting fields in the Clarence. The students
benefited greatly from the program and the mayor, Jim Simmons came to see
what the students had been working on. Overall, this has been a fantastic program for the local community and our students.
