"I advertise regularly in South County Magazine as well as Newport Mesa Magazinefor two reasons. First, the magazines are a bargain for the quality and coverage theyprovide and secondly, because from the very beginning, Jody has shown herself tobe a partner in helping our business thrive by providing valuable insight, introductions, promotional assistance and other benefits that other publishers neglect. I believe themagazines Jody publishes are the best value in their market and couldn't recommendthem more highly." - David Allen, Preferred Kitchen and Bath

It’s that time of year again, and I don’t mean standing in the last minute ship-ping line of shame at the post office. It’s time to be grateful.
I’m so blessed to be part of South County Magazine. Never have I workedwith such a dedicated and talented team of people! There’s a kindness, ac-ceptance and sincerity at Community Publications I never thought I’d find inthe fast-paced OC. Coming from small-town Idaho, that is truly saying some-thing. If you need further proof, just head up north with only a pocketknife, 4-wheeler and a potato. You’ll see how fast you’ll fit in. That’s exactly the kind of warm welcome I’ve been given here.
So here’s to happy holidays, health, love, and all of our wildest dreams coming true in 2013. I knowmine include anything vintage or some sort of chocolate-wine cupcake infusion.

“When Ricardo and I began participating two years ago, we knew that our rela-tionship with South County Magazine and its publisher, Jody Robinson, would notjust be one of business but one based on friendship and similar ideologies on howto better our community - whether it is in the classroom, on the soccer field, onstage, or promoting non-profit organizations.
Jody’s philosophies about community and philanthropy mirror our own and we knew that if we didn’tsupport this magazine we would be missing out on a golden opportunity. We are proud to partnerwith South County Magazine and are grateful to be featured within the pages of this impressive pub-lication. Jody’s dedication to the community is immeasurable and we here at Ricardo’s Place will con-tinue to support her endeavors in any possible way.” - Ricardo and Rosa Beas, Ricardo’s Place,San Juan Capistrano

In my 20 years in real estate, I have metmany people whose primary criteria whentransacting is to attempt to time the mar-ket and hope to buy at the bottom and sellat the top; a very rewarding experience
when timed perfectly. However, AllanGreenspan, with direct access to arguably oneof the best research desks in the world testi-fied before Congress in 2005 that he did notsee any indication that there would be a na-tional real estate correction outside of a fewselected cities where home values had out-paced income growth. In retrospect, it is fairlyclear that he was mistaken.
I would suggest that if Mr. Greenspan can’ttime the real estate market, most of us wouldbe hard-pressed to. I don’t think it should matter much. Real estate islocal, and generally a direct reflection of the local economy, and farmore susceptible to local economic changes than national policy. One would only need to glance at Detroit to see evidence of this ob-servation.
Here in South Orange County the real estate market is moving again, butthe pace is different, homes that are priced to market are moving veryfast with multiple offers and homes that are priced outside of the marketare sitting with no activity. To know the difference, you need access tolocal data and historical market knowledge. Homes that are priced over

Many of my investor clients are searching forcash flow, and we have found nearby areaswhere you can purchase a property for below re-placement cost and obtain a positive cash flow -substantially more than you can attain from thebank in interest and substantially more up side(if you believe that over time the property mayappreciate).
There are new buyers that are keenly awarethat interest rates for a long-term owner havefar more impact on the overall cost of housingthan the purchase price and are taking advan-tage some of the lowest rates in a lifetime.
My observation over the last 20 years is what has far more impact onyour success in the real estate market isn’t really timing; it is in deter-mining your needs and overall goal and time horizon; and then electinga property that fits the bill; or electing to sell a property that doesn’t.
You should have a clear understanding that your needs and goals maychange over time, and spend the time obtaining the recent, relevantsales data you need to make an informed decision. We can help. AtNewman Realty, we specialize in obtaining real-time, area-specific mar-ket conditions and data.

TThis could be the last year that you resolve tolose weight in the New Year, because next yearyou won’t need to.
If you’re like millions of Americans, you start outwith the best of intentions – launching into thelatest diet craze involving starving, only eatingcertain foods, taking dozens of supplement pillsevery day, or some other sort of routine that issheer punishment.
Sure enough, you’d lose weight only to start feel-ing stressed and oppressed by the strict regimenand end up right back to your old eating habits.
Sound familiar?
If you’re tired of gaining and losing the sameweight over and over, it’s time for the HungryHeart approach. By next year, you could be justlike the many Hungry Heart clients who are livinghealthy lifestyles, have learned how to take goodcare of themselves and no longer turn to food to
deal with what is emotionallygoing on in their lives.

I overeat when I'm angry or depressed.
I overeat when I’m tired or stressed.
I overeat to comfort or reward myself.
I eat when I'm bored.

work or daily activities.

Through this caring approach,Hungry Heart clients make slow, steady changes to their thoughtprocesses. This changes how theyrespond to life, what comes intotheir lives, and, ultimately, the waythey approach food.
Rather than target weight lossfrom a calorie intake or calorie-burning standpoint, The HungryHeart approaches the issue from aheart standpoint. And by “heart,”we mean the hub of your emotions.

We never discussedmy out of control eating behavior or theemotional insanity that was going on be-hind it or where this over-eating patternwould eventually take my weight.”
What Lauren is talking about is some-thing that many people experience;something that can’t be seen by thenumber on the scale. Gaining and losingweight over and over can be very un-healthy physically and emotionally, con-stantly throwing the body into shockand putting one’s mind into either a con-gratulatory or condemning attitude to-wards one’s self.
“What I understand now (which then doc-tors and I didn’t know then), is that theroot of my problem with food was that Ididn’t know how to handle stress and anx-iety. Once I realized that it was an emo-tional issue, not a food issue, I realized Iwas trying to solve the wrong problem.”
Once she identified the problem, Laurenset about finding the solution.
The Hungry Heart is not another weightloss option, it’s the solution. The day youconnect with us is the day you begin tosee what kind of healthy changes arepossible for you. Accommodating: This is exactly what sets the people at Align Pilates Center apart.
Pilates is an incredible workout for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. NicoleHoward and Cara Fraser, owners of Align Pilates Center, want people to know that every-one is welcome to try their classes and see for themselves why their method is so incred-ible. “We strive to enhance and enrich the lives of our clients and not just their bodiesthrough the Pilates method. We focus on quality of movement rather than the quantity ofexercise. We offer the experience of Pilates to develop the mind, body and spirit in a greatenvironment. We also pride ourselves on our years of education and our advanced training,”comments Nicole.
Specializing in private training, semi-private/group training and mat classes, they trulyhave something for everyone. “Over the last eight years we have been fortunate to haveworked under a physical therapist as PT aides. This has given us a tremendous learningexperience regarding post rehabilitation in combination with personal training throughPilates. It’s also wonderful that we all hold degrees in dance from CSULB and BASI, alongwith comprehensive Pilates training with dance specialization, and Master Pilates trainingfrom the renowned Real Isacowitz. ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at alevel of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Garyand his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customerservice.
“What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make thingsbetter, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trendsin the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied… that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your cus-tomers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large per-centage of our business is in referrals.”
Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that ClassyClosets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautifulcraftsmanship, but also that elusive quality of excellent service. Everygood cliché regarding their work applies.”
“This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet allour storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage toentertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honestrecommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,”says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanshipcombine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have onlyone warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourselfwanting to spread the good news.”
In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-basedInterior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment andadds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention todetail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. Theywere on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheart-edly recommend your company to allmy clients. It has been a pleasure towork with you all.”
Closet organization is something of an oxymoron at myhouse. Same goes for my home office. I actually do knowwhere everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetuallyreside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else makerhyme or reason of my filing “system.”
I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like ClassyClosets – if it’s a matter of function or simply a desire to have yourmess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize yourwork/life space with made-to-order cabinetry and organization sys-tems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.
Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and San Diego since 2003, of-fers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic whitemelanine to solid wood cabinetry.
“Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Al-though Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rulesthat typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – par-ticularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for in-stance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specificneeds and desires.”
Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture theirproducts right here in Southern California, which affords them the

Many local businesses boast great customer testimonials of re-cent transactions, but few can credit true “relationships” withclients dating back 50+ years.
Kevin and MaryGail Hentzen, owners of the Laguna Niguel-based Tut-tle’s Carpet One Floor and Home, have hadclients bring in their old invoices from car-pet installations in the 1960s.
Back then, the store was located in LagunaBeach and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle. In1980, the Hentzen family purchased thebusiness and young Kevin took over its day-to-day operations, working alongside his fa-ther, Gene. Under the elder Hentzen’stutelage for the following decade, Kevinhoned his skills by learning the intricaciesof all aspects of the flooring industry.
Today, Kevin brings more than 30 years ofexpertise to every job. His wife, Mary Gail, specializes in window coverings and with years of experience in theirown right, staff design consultants Donna and Cathi round out theTuttle’s Carpet One team.
“Much of our business is from customers that I’ve known for years. Itis more of a relationship with the client,” says Kevin. “People enjoythe personal experience that you won’t find in a big box store. It isvery rewarding to beautify people’s homes. It’s a great feeling whenthe client calls to say how much they love their new floor.”
Tuttle’s Carpet One specializes in all types of carpet, hardwood floor-ing, tile, stone, area rugs, vinyl and window coverings. They carry topbrands such as Karastan, Masland, Lees, Armstrong, and Hunter Dou-glas and offer the largest wool carpet selection in Orange County.

Because expert installation is so important, Kevin and Mary Gail onlywork with highly trained professionals who can install complex jobsand handle high-quality materials.
The company’s growth in more recent history can be traced to Kevin’sdecision to move the operation to a morevisible location Laguna Niguel in 1994. In ad-dition to enjoying increased foot traffic,Kevin joined Carpet One two years later, which lent itself to capturing even moremarket share – for a variety of reasons. Car-pet One is a co-operative that has over1,000 stores worldwide. Although all are in-dependently owned and operated, becausethey are a co-op, Carpet One can negotiatethe best prices and warranties as a largegroup. For example, Carpet One offers “theBeautiful Guaranty” which allows the cus-tomer up to 120 days from installation tohave the carpet replaced for ANY reason(even if they decide they don’t like the
color). The carpet and the labor are covered. No questions asked.
Another offer that only Carpet One offers is the “Healthy Living In-stallation.” This is a process that cleans the sub-floor with a HEPI-VACand the installers then spray the subfloor with Healthinex anti bacte-rial spray. Then they use a special carpet cushion that minimizessymptoms from mold, mildew, allergens and pollens.
The bottom line is that Tuttle’s CarpetOne Floor and Home offers thegreat advantage of the buyingpower as a group while still retainingthe independence and specialty of asmall store.

Is your kitchen layout perfectly func-tional, but the cabinet finish is fromthe 80’s? Re-facing may be out of thebudget since it is often more costly
than complete replacement. You may nothave considered refinishing because itsounds like a huge mess.
At C. Loren Studios, we strive to makeyour kitchen facelift stress free and surprisingly affordable. Lately wehave been changing maple to look like an updated alder or cherry andchanging old yellowing oak to look like rich walnut. Maybe you havewhite cabinets that could use a little depth with a subtle chocolate glaze.Or you may want a contrasting island. Regardless of what your currentfinish is there is always a way to make what’s old look new.
You may be perfectly happy with your kitchen, but your staircase greetsyour guests with a blast from the past. For a fraction of the cost of re-placing it, you can simply have it refinished. Obviously you have to takestyle into consideration, but there are so many areas that can usuallyget a new face instead of being ripped out. Once the project is completeyou will wonder how you lived with the old finish as long as you did.

Serving up a classic Northern California vibe anda menu characterized by a locally sourced, sea-sonal menu, my husband and I found it challeng-ing to decide which appetizers and entrees toindulge in. The couple who accompanied us ex-perienced no such dilemma. As fans of tradi-tional French cuisine, our friends went right forthe foie gras (because the Presidio remainedfederal property even after being decommis-sioned by the Army, the Presidio Social Clubdoesn’t have to abide by the State ban on the de-
lectable (they claim) duck liver that has been at the center of consid-erable controversy in recent months).
In the end, we opted for a little of everything, pairing our fruity Bellinisand bloody marys with decadent brioche beignets served with Mexicanhot cocoa, gruyere cheese toasts with tomato dip, poached eggs andham served with sliced tomato, hollandaise and brioche and the ex-ceptionally flavorful “Mission-style chilaquiles (scrambled eggs, tomatillo, cotija cheese and house roasted pork belly).
Although a weekend may not seem like enough elsewhere, it’splenty of time to explore the highlights of San Francisco andcome away with a taste of the many culinary adventures, recre-ational activities and cultural attractions that abound.
At about six miles square, it’s easy to traversethe city in a day (see sidebar for some of the topstops for first-time visitors). Because my hus-band’s family hails from the Bay area, we’ve en-joyed sojourns into the city on a somewhatregular basis over the past several years. Assuch, we’ve already done the “tourist thing,” sothis trip, we decided to make our visit more of arelaxing stay highlighted by an amazing gour-met (and historical) experience at the PresidioSocial Club (www.presidiosocialclub.com).
Housed in a converted infantry barracks on the prestigious (former)U.S. Army base of the same name, the iconic The Presidio Social Clubresides amidst abundant eucalyptus trees and expansive lawns, mak-ing it arguably one of the most pastoral spots in the city.
But the food is what we came for and the recommended Sundaybrunch more than delivered – so much so, in fact, that we were stilltalking about the individual dishes and the spectacular service (in-

Where to Stay
We really lucked out in finding this private residence for rent.Because we have family friends who live in the area, we’vebeen blessed to be able to visit the region fairly frequently, generally staying with our friends or in one of the nearby hotel
properties.
But this year, becausewe were traveling withthree adults and twoyoung children, we de-cided a rental homewould be a much morecomfortable and con-venient option.
And the place we foundcouldn’t have been more perfect (www.611JonesSF.com).
Whether you’re a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a fam-ily with kids or two families traveling together or a large groupof friends, this vacation/rental house in the heart of down-town/Union Square, was convenient to everything and bearsthe distinction of being the only single-family home in the area.
The 3 bedroom, 2 bath home provided the ideal layout to giveeveryone plenty of privacy. The cozy living room complete withfireplace and flat screen TV, free Wi-Fi and cable television wasdefinitely the most popular room in the house for the kids.
The fully outfitted gourmet kitchen and dining room mademealtime so easy. There was an outdoor area with seating, garage parking for a small car (since we had a larger vehicle,we parked in the space right in front of the garage), which isvirtually unheard of in the city, where you pay a premium forparking.
The owner, Taso, was incredible towork with. He was hyper-respon-sive to email inquiries and fol-lowed up with us after our stay tomake sure it was everything weexpected.
We can unequivocally say thatwe’ve been spoiled. After stayingat this amazing property, we’ll behard pressed to settle for anythingless the next time we head to SanFrancisco. Aside from the amenity, convenience of location and allthe money we saved from eatingin as opposed to dining out forevery meal (as we end up doingwhen we stay at a hotel), renting this private home ended upbeing a more affordable option since we would have had tobook at least two rooms to accommodate our group.

This rumor is not true. Medicare Advantage is not being eliminated. In fact, sincethe Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010, enrollment in these planshas risen from 24 percent of all Medicare beneficiaries to 28 percent. The qualityof the plans available to consumers are getting better every year too it seems. There's nothing in the law that cuts back the Medicare Advantage program in thesense of changing what plans are authorized, the only thing that's changing is
the cost. Medicare Advantage plans had been getting paid a lot more than the traditionalMedicare program, and the Affordable Care Act is slowly trying to reduce that.
Here's what's going on. As of 2010, these plans (run by private insurance companies) were get-ting paid about 9 percent more per enrollee than original Medicare, which in turn cost theMedicare program an extra $8.9 billion that year, according to a new report from the Common-wealth Fund, a New York-based health policy research group. "Everyone was paying higher PartB premiums to subsidize extra benefits for one in four beneficiaries," says David Lipschutz, policy attorney at Center for Medicare Advocacy in Washington, D.C. The Affordable Care Actis in the process of phasing out these overpayments. Until, by, 2017, Medicare Advantage planswill, (on average) , be getting paid about the same as original Medicare costs.
But rather than roll back payments to all plans in a broad brush-stroke, the law takes a moredelicate approach. For instance, it cuts funds for the plans that were getting the highest over-payments more severely than plans that were doing a better job containing costs. And it hasalso instituted a bonus system that awards extra money to plans with higher scores on qualityof care and customer service. Should you be worried that Medicare Advantage plans willeconomize by reducing your benefits? Nope, the plans are required to provide all Medicarebenefits, so there's no way they can cut them. That includes the free preventive servicesadded to Medicare by the Affordable Care Act. And Advantage plans that include a drug ben-efit are closing the doughnut hole just the same as stand-alone Part D drug plans. The onlyarea where plans can even consider cutting back are for optional services such as dental andvision benefits.

Its no secret prescription drug abuse has causedmany deaths in the youth of America, especially inrecent years. Most parents are aware of this prob-lem, but still hold on to the mentality that their childwouldn’t participate in these types of behaviors. Un-fortunately, there is an epidemic of prescription
drug abusers, and we are greatly impacted by this herein Orange County. Natalie Costa, owner of The Per-former’s Academy teamed up with film director BrentHuff to create a life changing documentary titled “BehindThe Orange Curtain” that’s quickly gained attentionfrom the media, schools, parents and residents ofOrange County.
So why is the OC in particular so vulnerable to this problem? “We discovered itbegan largely in part due to the children born of upper middle class having dispos-able income with little to no supervision. With the help of a dirty doctor, some cashfor the prescription and either insurance or cash to the pharmacy, the sharing chainbegins. Orange County alone has approximately 14 physicians under the microscopeof the DEA,” comments Natalie.
“Behind the Orange Curtain”:
Anyone interested in a private screening at their home or arranging a viewing at their school or group is encouraged tocontact Natalie immediately. She also includes a Q&A panel discussion for her large group showings. You can reach her at
(949) 609-1600. Education is the key to conquering this problem. Talk to your teenager today.
Shown at schools and private screen-ings across the OC, “Behind The Or-ange Curtain” has educated thousandsof children, teachers and parents onthe dangers of abusing prescriptiondrugs, and what measures are beingtaken to fight the problem. “For most, the problem starts at home in the av-erage medicine cabinet,” Natalie adds.
For Natalie, the inspiration to create this film came a lit-tle too close to home. After her daughter’s friend passedaway due to a prescription drug overdose, she learnedhundreds of teens in the area had died the same tragicway. Natalie considered herself a “mom-in-the-know”and still hadn’t heard of this danger for teens. “It waseven more shocking to learn these were teens weregood kids from good families. That’s why it’s so danger-ous, it can happen to anyone,” Natalie says.

2) What is the cost for lasertoenail treatment?IR: The treatments are broken downinto two easy to understandcomponents. The first is theexamination and nail treatment whichmay be covered by insurance. Thesecond part is the actual lasertreatment which is not covered. Aone-time examination fee of $500 ischarged during the first sessionwhich covers both the fee for the ini-
tial examination as well as the follow-up office visit. There is a separate laser fee of $70 foreach toe which is also paid upfront and covers two laser treatments. For example, treatingone toe would be $570; however if all ten toenails are treated, the charge would be $1200.For severe infections, a third laser treatment may be necessary. Exclusive anti-fungalproducts are sold separately. You are not forced to treat all your nails as may be mandatoryat other offices.
1. How did you perfect the lasertreatment for fungal nails?Ivar Roth, DPM: After performing thou-sands of laser fungal toenail treatments, Ideveloped and refined a proprietary proto-col coupled with the newest second gen-eration FDA approved laser. The new laserwith its digital readouts allows me to tellprecisely how much energy is required tokill the fungus. With this information, I cal-culate a specific customized laser treatment tailored to each patient. This patient specifictreatment means that no two patients are given the same laser treatment. In addition, I in-vented a new way to get rid of the fungal infection in the toenails. Before your lasertreatment, I will perform Maximum Nail Reduction (MNR) which removes at least 80% of your fungus in a single office visit. This exclusive protocol is so effective that I appliedfor a patent and it is currently only available at my office. The initial treatment fee includes asecond treatment session in order to ensure your success.
