ALLwasexposedatHibiscusCoastMunicipality chambers on Tues-day when the application to turnMpenjati beach, north of the la-goon and Trafalgar Beach, into anudist one was approved by 32councillors.

Eight councillors objectedwhile five chose to abstain fromvoting.

Thegeneralconsensus,accord-ing to the councillors, was that ifyoudon’twanttoseenakedpeople, don’t go to that particular beach.

“While some may think it’s arathercheekythingtosay,theposi-tive side to it is that the economicspin-off this beach will generatefrom naturist tourists, is tremen-dous.”

DeputyMayor, Johnnie deWet,said council approved the applica-tion by KwaZulu-Natal NaturistsAssociation (KZNNA) after thor-ough consideration.

“Itwillbemadeanudistfriendlybeachprovided that they (KZNNA)successfully apply and obtain thenecessary approvals fromDepart-ment of Development, Tourismand Environmental Affairs andKZNEzemvelo in termsof the Inte-grated Coast Management Act 24of 2008,” said de Wet.

Municipal manager, Maxwell

Mbili the application had been ap-proved in principle.

“If there are any hiccups withapplying to other bodies, we willidentifyanotherbeach,”saidMbili.

“Nobodywill say I used to enjoymyselfatthatbeach,nowit’sanud-ist one. Nobody is using thatspace... it is not nudity in public.Onlypeoplewhowant to see it,willsee it.”

He said the public will be in-formed as to when the beach willofficially open as a nudist one anduntil then, nudity is forbidden.

Those not in favour of council’sapprovalwill not be allowed to ap-peal as there are no laws that pro-vide for this sort of objection.

However if anybody feels thattheir human rights are being vio-lated, they may file a complaint atthe constitutional court.

John Skene, founder of theKZNNAwas themainman behindtheapplication.Hesaidhewasde-lighted that HCM had given the goahead.

“It’s a very courageous movethat council hasmade. It’s going tobe a financial drawcard for theSouth Coast,” he said.

PRECIOUS GUMEDE>>[email protected]

SEVEN students from local municipalitieshavebeenselected to pursue their careerin Cuba.

On Monday the Department of Health andthe Ugu district Municipality held a farewellceremony for them at Ugu Sports and LeisureCentre.

“The thought of leaving my family for sixyears is a bit scary but I’m so grateful of the op-portunity,” said Thamasanga Mbatha (17) ofMthwalume.

Hesaid first timeheheardof thisopportuni-ty was at church, when members encouragedhim to apply. Thamsanqa matriculated lastyear and is the only child of a single, unem-

ployed mother.Ugu District Municipality mayor

Ntombifikile Gumede expressed concern thatonly seven students are being sent off this yearcompared to previous years.

“We have sixmunicipalities under Ugu andit worries me that in two consecutive years nostudent has been chosen from VulamehloMunicipality.

“It is impossiblethatall thestudentswhoap-plied did notmeet the requirements,” she said.

The mayor requested that the Departmentof Health look into this.

Thulani Nkosana from the Department ofHealth said the dates when the students willleave for Cuba have not yet been confirmed.

“We are looking at between the 13 to 15November.”

Hectic, event-filled times

THIS weekend is going to be ahectic for Ugu South CoastTourism in that wewill be con-

currently involved in no less thanthree events in our area and in addi-tion to promoting during the week atthe Sports and Events Tourism Ex-change (SETE) at the ICC in Durban.

In the Umdoni area, we are pre-sentingtheAfricaMarineandLeisureExpo at Scottburgh main beach, which will be a fascinating blend ofoceanographic education, sea andland sports, entertainment, craft andcommercialpromotions-we encour-age South Coasters to attend.

Then inland in Oribi Gorge, wehavesponsored theSouthCoastLake

Eland Mile which is an ultra-swimrapidly becoming a big draw card forparticipants and media alike. And tocap it all, we are also supporting theanniversaryevent for the reintroduc-tionof theairline service fromJohan-nesburg to Margate.

This is not the first time we havecommitted to events and promotionsat the same time - during one week-end in late 2013, we attended fivesuch events here in KZN and in Gau-teng. You can imagine how extendedour staff were.

Our initial research indicates thatthroughtheseeffortswecontributetoa Greater South Coast events calen-darthatcoversat least250eventdaysper annum. This is not all our doingasthereareanumberofclubs, serviceorganisations, schools and privateeventers that keep our event vibe onthe go and they are congratulated fortheir sustained efforts.

One would have thought that folk

downherewould relaxbefore thebigsummer rush but no, every weekendis an opportunity andwith us being ayear-round destination we mustmake hay, as it were.

Weare shortlymoving intoahigh-er level of conference-related eventsby having an in house professionalconferenceorganiser(PCO)responsi-ble forsellingourarea formainlycor-porate and professional meetingsand conferences.

This initiativewe believe, will addto those gap-filling opportunitieswhich, for the hospitality industry, isan important bread and butter issue- especially when we can be a veryseasonal place to visit.

So everybody, before the mainlyGauteng and KZN folk are welcomedfrom the end of November, there aresome jolly things to do this weekend.

Till thenwehave event promoterstomeet in Durbs - enjoy our eventingparadise.

Move over, MaslowSTEPH MCLENNAN

ABOUT a million years ago, someguy named Maslow, who had waytoo much time on his hands, put

togetheratriangularhierarchyofneeds, detailing what he thought were themost essential things for people to bein possession of.

Ever since, high school and universi-ty students around the world havebeen falling asleep in lessons and lec-tures while the teacher, as bored as hisor her subjects, drones on about this hi-erarchy.

The soporific effect of Maslow haseven been felt in examinations, wherestudents have failed courses due to fall-ing asleep in papers which includedquestions about Maslow and his blast-ed hierarchy.

So, to sum up this hierarchy so quick-ly that you won't have time to fallasleep, Maslow states that the first lev-el of needs pertains to physiologicalmatters. Food. Air. Excretion. Sleep.

In other words, the basic elementsrequired to not be dead.

His second level of needs relates tosecurity needs: a job, health and proper-ty.

The third deals with love and be-longing.

By rights, Maslow should get a men-tion in the credits of every gooeychick flick ever made.

On level four, getting to the stuffthat Maslow thinks only the elite reach, sits things like self confidence andearning the respect of others.

On the fifth level is the lofty notionof self-actualisation, a word not spoken

outside the halls of academia since1850.

This encompasses traits like mo-rality, creativity, and the ability tobe non-judgmental.

Here are the problems I have withMaslow:his ideasareponcyandoutdat-ed, and have no resonance with the 21stcentury.

Most of all, I take exception toMaslow's belief that one cannot reachlevel two until you have level onewrapped up, and so on.

To my non-academic brain, this im-plies that no homeless person can becreative; that no unemployed personcan have moral scruples, and that in-somniacs can never fall in love.

Also, as a person who relies upon mycreativity (level five) for my bread andbutter (level one), I assure you that my

bodily functions are all in order. In 21st century South Africa, in which

each economic recession is worse thanthe last; each president more corruptthan his predecessor and where every-thing is uncertain, does one ever perma-nently move past level one?

Or does one cling to the attributesof levels two to five in order to sustainlevel one? Here's how, in my opinion, a21st century list of needs looks.

There are no levels, because all areas imperative to truly living as the next:

oxygen (as pollution-free as possi-ble); a roof over our head (brick andmortar for the fortunate such as my-self); friends (to provide a roof whenone's own is taken away by the bank);

a passion and a purpose (withoutthis there is little point to getting out ofbed), self-confidence (or at least theability to fake it, because nobody likesor employs a wallflower), and laughter(because without this, breathing is fu-tile).

What do all these violent events have in com-mon? Traumatised people. Forthe lucky few who have good medical aids, thisis usually available for a short period after theevent. daily battle down the road from “victim”to “survivor”?

Anger, resentment, guilt, shame, depression, fear, anxiety, grief – all these emotions come to

the fore when one is dealing with the aftermathof trauma. We have a group that deals with theseissues. This informal gathering of people is help-ing each other and will welcome you. The supportgroup meetings are loosely structured, and arefacilitated by Julia Christiansen, who has awealth of experience in the field of Trauma Coun-selling.

Christiansen says the healing process contin-ues throughout life, and for the survivor, re-inte-gration can be a lengthy and intense process, andeach individual must determine the time it takes. The only requirement to join the group is that youcommit to a confidentiality agreement with theother members of the group.

True faithneeds no crutchARESPONSEtobothMr.ChioléandMr. Butcher’s posts, in which I takea neutral position. Mr. Butcher youclaim that theJudaic-Godof theAb-rahamic faith, is impotent when itcomes to healing a severed limb.

Firstly, the conflation of inverte-brates in such an argument servesas an example of our “inferior” ge-neticmake up, lacking the ability toregrow a limb. This is simply howweweremade.Didthe“creator”notcreate us like this for a reason?Questioning this, is questioning ourown fabric and design. Same logic in this regard. Jesusalsostates “donottesttheLordyourGod”. This argument, however, haswith it a certain element of testing

hisability (againsthisowncreation)and therefore becomes irrelevantrespectively.

Chiolé, would humanity have“foundGod”earlierhadmiddle-ageCatholism not regulated, and limit-ed science? Were you around 13.5billion years ago to confirm the cur-rent age of existence? “A contradic-tion to your faith, as it is said to bemuchyounger.”Did you takea jour-ney to the Earth’s centre to confirmithasasolidcore?Haveyoustudiedevidence to observe howamino-acids are intrinsically codedinto cells? I admire your confidencein your certainty, but your faith inscience is used to defend your faithinGod.And true faithdoesnotneeda crutch of science, because truefaith is knowing and certainty.

TO Esq SVS’s negative contribution on reli-gion (Fever, 24 October) please consider DrSir Muhammad Iqbal’s favourable evalua-tion of religion. Please mark the contrast.Allama Iqbal said: “Humanity needs threethings today – a spiritual interpretation ofthe universe, spiritual emancipation of theindividual and basic principles of a univer-sal import directing the evolution of hu-man society on a spiritual basis. ModernEurope has, no doubt, built idealistic sys-tems on these lines; but experience has

shown that truth revealed through purereason is incapable of bringing the fire ofliving conviction which personal revelationalone can bring. This is the reason why purethought has so little influenced men whilereligion has always elevated individualsand transformed societies. The idealism ofEurope never become a living factor in herlife and the result is a perverted ego seek-ing itself through mutually intolerant de-mocracies whose sole function is to exploitthe poor in the interests of the rich. Europe

today is the greatest hindrance in the wayof man’s ethical development.” True reli-gion is meant to make men free; it freesthem from within and frees them fromwith out. It frees them from them fromwithin and frees them from their disordersand inordinate passions and makes themlords in their own inner realm. Religion isthe only serious way of handling reality.

Y.A. KhamissaAlbersville

• Letter shortened.

True religion meant to make men free

I SEE our erudite Peter Chiolé, being so fullof himself, quotes all sorts of twaddle inthe hope that people will believe the rub-bish he is sprouting (Science against God?Fever, 24 October). My dear man with theverbal diarrhoea, it seems that you wereunable to see that I was wanting to knowwhy your God cannot heal a simple am-putee or Aids. I remind you that the Biblewas cobbled together at the conference ofNicea by Constantine and all the religions

of the day because the Roman empire wasfailing and they needed money. Virtuallyall important events such as Christ, virginbirth,etc,arealltakenfromEgyptianhisto-ry. Sad to say, but your religion condonedthe most evil acts against Jews, Muslimsand Aboriginals, not to mention the Inqui-sition, simply because it did not agree withyour famed bible. A sick discredited godand his evil religion. You can keep it, pal.

Charles Butcher, Shelly Beach

Religious twaddle and evil godsTHE letter from SVS refers. Here are someevolution facts which SVS cannot dis-prove:

• Evolution (more precisely macro-ev-olution) is still a theory.

• Scientific inquests rely on providingpeer-reviewed empirical evidence for thescientific facts that a particular scientisthas established to be fact. It is impossibleto do any empirical studies on the theoryof evolution. None of the people on this

planet were alive a mere 200 years ago.Time is the only element in our universewhich we cannot squeeze into a test tube.As long as an evolutionist was not theretoobserveandrecordsomeeventsasthe-orised by evolutionists millions of yearsago, the nonsense that they speculatetranspired is mere speculation.

• Thus far, the Bible is the only oldestof documents that humanity possesseswhich is impossible to disprove (at least

in the physical realm seeing the spiritualrealm lies outside the ambit of physicalscience).

• Based on my first two points, evolu-tion does not even count as a science.Nothing in the Bible contradicts anythingin real science.

Brain foodfor exams• Breakfast - Many studies have shownthat concentration, performance andmemory are improved if you eat in themorning. Try cereal with milk or toastwith spread. Add some fruit and someprotein e.g. yoghurt, eggs or bakedbeans.

• Lunch - Have a light lunch with pro-tein so that you stay alert. Try a bowlof beef and vegetable soup with a breadroll, or a roast beef and salad sandwich.

• Snacks - Aim for a light meal /snack that provides carbohydrate forglucose to fuel the brain, combined withprotein and a little of the “healthy” fats.

• Dinner - Prepare meals high in es-sential nutrients including red meat 3-4times per week. Aim to sit down as afamily to enjoy meals together. It’s theperfect opportunity to offer emotionalsupport.

Tips to stay focused during examsStretch – Stretching sends fresh ox-

ygenated blood to your head, neck andshoulders.

Sleep well - Aim for a minimum ofsix hours, ideally seven to eight.

Eat red meat as part of a balanceddiet – Red meat three to four times aweek helps to prevent low levels of ironwhich can affect concentration, memo-ry and learning abilities and also pro-vides other essential nutrients such asprotein, zinc, omega-3 and B vitamins.

Exercise regularly – Exercise, espe-cially outdoors, can help students copewith mental stress and recharge.

instead2. Start your day with protein. No, really! Why it works: Protein keeps you fuller for

longer so filling up at breakfast time will helpkeep you satiated, making it less likely thatyou’ll binge later on in the day. Not a fan of egg

17HOME IMPROVEMENT

Advantages ofhaving a carport>> Carport can be used as a play area

A CARPORT provides shelter for yourvehicle. People and pets aren't theonly things that need shelter from

the elements. Besides a home, a car is usu-ally considered to be one of the more impor-tant investments you make. A carport is ashelter constructed from wood, metals orother materials and it tends to take theplace of a garage. Here are 10 advantagesto using a carport.

1: Weather safetyA carport can keep your car far away

from the elements, whether harmful sum-mer rays, winter snow, sleet or rain. A car-port usually has a roof and sometimessides. However, it is not usually enclosed.

2: Helpfulness for singlesA carport can be helpful for people who

live alone. Carports usually sit close to thehome. Therefore, pulling up and into a car-port and parking closer to the front doorcould be safer than parking in the street.

3: ProtectionSpeaking of safety, housing a car under

the carport may also shield it from vandal-ism or other random attacks. Burglars orperpetrators may be less inclined to entera carport close to the home.

4: Additional spaceYou can use carports as outdoor porch-

es if you need extra space.5: Other vehicle storageYou can also use a carport to shelter

boats, trailers, motorcycles and othermethods of transportation if you don'thave room in your garage.

6: ShadeYou may use a carport as a play area for

children or shaded areas for adults.7: OrganisationIf you install a carport with walls, it may

also serve as an extra storage unit for tools, boxes and other items.

8: ConvenienceBecause most carports are open areas,

they do not have doors. Ultimately, the lack

of door can be more convenient when youcome home with grocery bags or otheritems you need to carry inside. A carport canalso save on energy and electricity.

9: Added home valueIf your home does not have a garage and

you decide to sell it, buyers might considerit a disadvantage. At least with a carport, prospective home hunters will see they canpark their car, motorcycle or boat on thegrounds rather than the street.

10: No more storage unitsA carport could save from having to rent

a storage unit. Most of the time, you can construct a

carport to resemble or at least blend withthe architecture of your home, be it bricks, siding or wood. Before you decide to pur-chase a pre-fabricated carport, construct acarport on your own or even call in a profes-sional, check with your municipality or ho-meowners association for zoning ordinanc-es or for what is allowed in the neighbor-hood. Some communities require permitsand proof of plans.

Water-saving tipsTURN off the tap while brushingteeth, shaving or soaping hands.

1. Take shorter showers anduse less water if you bath.

2. Avoid buying bottled water.3. Sweep outside areas in-

stead of hosing with water.4. Use eco-friendly soap and

cleaning products.5. Fix leaks at home and re-

port public water leaks to themunicipality.

6. Always use a plugged-sinkor bowl instead of a running tap.

7. Insulate hot water pipes toreduce time waiting for water toheat up.

8. Install aerators and flow-re-ducing valves on your taps.

9. Install water saving deviceson taps, toilets, showers andsprinklers.

10. Install a water meter andmonitor your use.

11. Install an instant waterheater at your taps for immedi-ate hot water.

Methods to check your homeis leak-free

1. Use your water meter tocheck for hidden water leaks.Read the water meter before andafter a two-hour period when nowater has been used. If the wa-ter meter doesn’t read exactlythe same, then there is a leak.

2. To check for toilet tankleaks, add food colouring to thetank.

If the toilet leaks, the toiletbowl will have changed colour

within 30 minutes.3. Repair dripping taps by re-

placing the washer. If a tap isdripping at a rate of one dropper second, you could be wastingup to 10 220 litres per year.

4. If your toilet handle con-stantly stays in a downward po-sition this means that water isconstantly running. Replace orfix the handle to avoid wastedwater.

5. Insulate your water pipes. If you do, you’ll get hot waterfaster, avoid wasting water whileit is heating, and also savingmoney on electricity.

Plants and garden1. Learn about water-wise

gardening.2. Water plants at the coolest

part of the day.3. Group plants together that

have the same water require-ments.

4. Water plants with the wateryou used in the kitchen to rinsefruit and vgetables.

5. Choose local indigenouswater-wise plants for your homeand garden.

6. Adjust sprinklers to waterplants and not the pavement.

7. Cover your pool so the wa-ter doesn’t evaporate.

8. Check your pool for leaks.9. Put self-closing spray noz-

zles on hosepipes.10. Use natural and organic

garden products.- www.fortheloveofwater.co.za

Checklist for choosingstudent accommodation>> There are no set standards yet for this type of accommodation

WITH matric exams now under way,the next major step for manypupils will be leaving home to at-

tend college or university – and findingsomewhere to live while they completetheir studies. “And for the majority, this willprobably not be a room on campus in anofficial residence, as SA tertiary institu-tions are woefully short of accommoda-tion, says Andrew Schaefer, MD of leadingnational property management companyTrafalgar.

The latest available statistics from theDepartment of Higher Education andTraining (DHT) show there is only enoughon-campus accommodation for one out of

every five tertiary students and in spite ofsizeable private sector investment in off-campus student accommodation in thepast few years, the backlog of studentbeds at universities around the country isestimatedatwellover500 000.“Inpracti-cal terms, this means that tens of thou-sands of students are forced to look be-yond purpose-built students units everyyear, and rent flats or rooms from privatelandlords. Unfortunately, there are no setstandards yet for this type of accommoda-tion as regards safety, facilities, noise orgood management, so students and par-ents need to have their own checklist ofthings to consider when making their

choice.”Items on this list should include:• Distance from campus and access to

reliable public transport. Students oftentry to stretch their budgets by renting ac-commodation further from campus, butunless they have access to a regular shuttleservice like the “Jammie” buses in CapeTown, orquickandcheapaccesstocampusvia public transport like the Gautrain or thenew Bus Rapid Transport services, they caneasily end up spending more on transportthan they are saving on rent – and spend-ing too much time commuting instead ofstudying.

• Security. In an unfamiliar town or city

looking at should also have good securitymeasures and procedures in place to en-sure their personal safety and protect theirpossessions. Many students return homelate at night which makes this even moreimportant.

• Building management. There is nodoubt that student accommodationworks best in blocks of flats or houses thathave been built or specifically converted tomeet student needs - and where there isstrong property management enhancedby the presence of an experienced on-sitecaretaker or “house mother” to constantlyaddress maintenance, safety and counsel-ling issues. Good landlords who target stu-dent tenants will also be familiar with 10-month leases and schedule major buildingmaintenance for the “empty” months ofDecember and January. Many will also pro-vide low-cost/ free storage for students’belongings during these months.

• Single or shared rooms? Some stu-dents like sharing dormitory-style roomsand bathrooms with their fellow students, others like sharing a flat or a house in whichthey have their own room, and yet othersprefer to have a space that is entirely theirown, even if it’s tiny. Their choice may alsobe influenced by cost, with shared accom-modation generally being cheaper – andproviding company. But whatever they

choose, they should make sure that thereisaquietplaceintheirhouseorblockwherethey can go to study.

• What furniture is provided? Ideally, student rooms should be semi-furnished,with beds, desks, built-in cupboards andlockers for valuables all provided, and stu-dents only having to bring their own linen, kitchen utensils and perhaps a smallfridge. In a shared house or apartment, thestudy area, dining area and lounge shouldalso be furnished, and there should be aworkingstoveandfridgeinthekitchen.On-site laundry facilities are also most usefuland a fast Internet connection is essentialthese days, preferably Wi-Fi.

• Boarding or self-catering? Studentsare notoriously bad at feeding themselvesbecause they find meal preparation time-consuming or because they just forget tobudget for food, and many studies havelinked poor academic performance to poornutrition.

So many parents prefer communes andstudent apartment blocks where the rentincludes at least one good meal a day pre-pared by trained staff. But even if theychoose this semi-boarding option insteadof self-catering, students should alwayscheck the state of the kitchen and theequipment provided before deciding torent.

There isonlyenoughon-campusaccommo-dation forone out ofevery fivetertiarystudents.

it is especially im-portant for stu-dents to checkthat the area theyare considering issafe, clean andrelatively quiet sothat they will beable to sleep andstudy comfort-ably. Shops andentertainmentvenues should beclose but not tooclose, and thehouse or block offlats they are

Neighbour objections to renovations>> Some are even willing to pay huge sums of money in taking their objections to court.

OBSTRUCTION of views whenpeoplearerenovating isanon-goingissueandisalwaysprob-

lematicwhenitcomestotheinterpre-tations of building regulations.

This is according to Lanice Stew-ard, managing director of KnightFrankResidentialSA,whosaysmanyneighbours would object to renova-tions on the adjacent property if thenew building was to detract fromtheir views, the property value andprivacy. Some are evenwilling to payhuge sums of money in taking theirobjections tocourt toprevent theren-ovations or building work takingplace.

In a case recently covered in aSmith Tabata Buchanan Boyes prop-erty law update, Turnbull-Jackson vHibiscusCoastMunicipality andOth-ers. Turnbull-Jackson objected toconstructionwork that had begun on

the property next to his, even thoughthe municipality had approved theplans for the work being carried outby the owners, Pearl Star Invest-ments.Turnbull-Jackson’s argumentwas that itwould de-tract fromhissea views, privacy andthe propertyvalue, andappealedagainst theplan approval. Construction wasstopped after an interdict was grant-edandrevisedplansweresubmitted.The revisions were approved but, again, Turnbull-Jackson appealedand won.

Turnbull-Jackson was against thethird version of the plans submitted, but this time his appeal was unsuc-

cessful.Hetookthematter totheHighCourt, unsuccessfully, but refused togiveup, andtook thematter to theSu-preme Court of Appeals, which de-niedhisapplication. Ina lastattempt,

he then took thematter to the Consti-tutional Court andwas unsuccessful.“Onewould think that hewould havegiven in earlier and accepted that theconstruction was likely to go ahead, but in this case he continued to haltthe building works and spent hugesumsofmoney in taking thematter tocourt after court.

“If you are the person planning torenovate, it is alwaysadvisable to ap-proach your neighbours and discussyourplanswith themfirstbeforesub-mitting them for approval. Many

neighbours aremore acceptingwhen they areapproached firstinstead of beinggiven a fait ac-compli,” saysSteward. On ap-proaching the

neighbours while planning renova-tions, it might be necessary to makesmall concessions when discussingplans with them and being sensitiveto their needs, she says.

“Not to say that would have ap-peased the neighbour in the caseabove, but hadhebeen consulted be-forehand, he might have been more

amenable and the owners would nothave had their project delayed foryears.

“One should be aware that therehave been many changes to zoningregulationsandthat if theneighbour-ing owners decide to build onto theirhome or upwards, that the planscould be approved based on densifi-cationprinciplesandthatobjectingtothese, if not completely founded, might be wasting valuable time andresources,” says Steward.

She says if buying a property, alsobe aware of what could happen nextdoor, and think about whether youwouldbeable toacceptwhatcouldbebuilt.Evenif there isaheightorbuild-ing restriction in the title deeds, theowners of the property could get thatlifted, meaning itdoesnotgiveunlim-ited protection.

Property co-ownership and liabilityWHEN people co-own a piece of land, theymight be under the impression that eachperson owns a specific area, i.e. if they livein a cottage and use the surrounding hec-tares, it might be assumed that section istheirs, but this is not usually how it works.

Be sure to to draw up an agreementfrom the outset with regard to portions ofbond repayments, rates, running expenses

property is co-owned, no portion can be im-proved or changed without the permissionof the other owners, and all the ownershave to agree to the way the land will beused. They have to agree on the day-to-dayrunning of the property, whether trees willbe cut down, what buildings will be con-structed, whether cattle will graze theproperty and what sections to use, and so

on. All the co-owners will have to contrib-ute, in direct proportion to their ownership,to the expenses incurred in running andmaintaining the property. These would in-clude rates and taxes and all the mainte-nance costs. Steward says if a perimeterfence needs to be repaired, for instance, the

cost proportionately and not just pay fortheir section to be done. “Co-ownership isa good way to get yourself on the propertyowning ladder, and possibly own some-thing that you could not afford to buy onyour own. It is important, however, tochoose your co-owners carefully, and besure to draw up an agreement from theoutset with regard to portions of bond re-payments, rates, running expenses and

conduct rules for all involved.” Stewardsays it is also best to discuss beforehand, what future plans each co-owner has forhis share, in case their intention is not tohold onto the investment for the same pe-riod of time as the other co-owners. This is ac-cording to Lanice Stew-ard, managing directorof Knight Frank Resi-dential South Africa, who says co-ownershipis usually a share or apercentage of the total, and this means thatthey are also “co-lia-ble”, and have obliga-tions towards thewhole of the property, not just the sectionthattheyoccupy.Stew-ard says it is advisablefor the co-owners of aproperty to have a sep-arate agreement thatstates the terms andconditions of theirownership. 21Hastings On Food>> ‘By the time I was 12 I was set on going into the food industry’GARY HASTINGS

Surname: HastingsFirst names: Gary IvanDate of birth: 03-02-1960Nationality: South African

GROWING up in a continental homewhereby we had to dress up for allmeals and make each mealtime an

occasion with properly laid tables withcandles etc, most definitely, set me on thepath for my lifetime passion for food. From a very early age I was already experi-menting and assisting in our home kitch-en with continental dishes prepared bymymother, whobroughtbackrecipesandideas from her travels in the fashion in-dustry, whereby she frequently attendedall the major fashion fares in London,Italy, France, New York, Argentina andAustralia.

By the time I was 12 I already had mymind set on going into the food industryand after the death of my father I startedwork during school holidays at the Carev-elle Restaurant in Johannesburg. The res-taurant was situated in the stock ex-change building and catered for up mar-ket lunches and functions. My first dutiesin the kitchen were peeling potatoes andwashing pots and pans. I still maintainthis is the best way to begin one’s career,as it forms a solid base and understand-ing of all aspects of the kitchen. In 1976I joined the Caravelle full time, howeverafter three months I was approached bythe owner of the Café Royal restaurant indowntown Johannesburg to join his teamas a trainee chef.

After a year and a half at the Café Roy-al, I applied for and joined in September1977 the in house chefs programme withHoliday Inns. In July 1978 I was called upfor compulsory military duties and servedwith the defence force until July 1980.

After completing my military trainingI traveled around Europe visiting most ofthe principal countries, and then returnedto Millpark Holiday Inn to continue mytraining. In April 1982 I was promoted tochef de partie and transferred to Wel-come Holiday Inn for the opening of thehotel. In January 1984 I joined SouthernSun as a chef de partie for the openingof the Sandton Sun, whereby I started in

the fine-dinning Italian Villa restaurantandthereaftermovedtothemain kitchenbanqueting production section, althoughthe time I worked at this unit was shortI had the opportunity to work closely withworld renowned chef doctor, BillGallagher as well as chef Jos Thys and theexperience I gained from these gentle-men was priceless. From there I joined theMount Nelson Hotel team in Cape Town. After working at there for 18 months Ijoined Chef Johan Zsabo and his team asa chef departie at the Elizabeth Sun.

In August 1989 I felt I was ready andachieved my goal of being an executivechef before I was 30. I joined the KarosWiderness Hotel as their executive chefand remained with them until March of1993. The unit was extremely busy yearround and catered for large conferencesand business incentives. In May 1993,feeling I needed a change from hotels ingeneral, I accepted the post as the execu-tive chef of the Green Dolphin restaurantin Cape Town. Just after the birth of myson Dramond, I was approached by theBerjaya Hotel Group to take over one oftheir units in the Seychelles, which I ac-cepted and left the Green Dolphin in 1994after being with there for only one year.

In July 1995 I left for the Seychellesand the hotel had three outlets as wellas large banqueting facilities, with themost principal function been the swim-suit portion of the Miss World Pageant.

When the GM of the Mahe beach left tojoin another hotel group on the island heasked me to go with him. I joined the plan-tation Club Resort and Casino in the Sey-chelles in March 1997 as the executivesous chef. I went on to become the headchef and then the back-of-house opera-tions manager responsible for daily run-ning of the unit, overseas and local pur-chases, future projects and assisting withtheoperationsofthehotel’sholdingcom-pany. In March 2003 I and long-standingpartner Nonna, started our own compa-ny, Acropolis PTY Seychelles. The purposeof the company was to offer training tosmaller establishments in the Seychellesas well as consulting for the larger hotels.

In December 2004 we returned toSouth Africa, and I joined a consultancyas food and beverage projects chef. InFebruary 2005 I went to Swazilandwhereby I assisted the complex executivethe late Chef David Kay with his daily op-erations in allthreeunits.FromApril2005until April 2006 I assisted the executivesous chef at the Palace Hotel with all as-pects of the day-to-day operations ac-cording to the standards set out by ChefSmalberger.

I also took ownership of the principalfunctions for the Nedbank Golf Challenge- the Pro Am Dinner, the Valley of theWaves and Boma functions, again underthe guidance of the group executivechefs. In May 2006 I joined the Wild Coast

THE true judge on whether a diet is ideal for bothdogs and humans is based on whether they can pro-vide the correct pH balances, with a leaning towardsalkalinity. Thus, when looking at popular human di-ets, this key formula is always fulfilled.

The Banting Diet, promoted by Professor TimNoakes, fulfils these requirements. Often his pro-posed diet is misunderstood. He is actually advocat-ing a high-fat diet with low refined carbohydrates, rather than a high meat protein diet. Looking thor-oughly into his diet and recipes, the contribution ofhis veggies (predominantly alkaline) supersedesand balances the acidity from the meat content. Re-member, fat mostly has a neutral impact on pH.

Recently, a study conducted by animal science re-searchers in California now demonstrates feedingdogs fresh, healthy, whole food diets instead of high-ly processed kibble and cans results in improvedhealth measures.

When preparing pets’ diets the same considera-tions should be applied as to preparing human nutri-tional foods. A dogs’ Banting Diet would be an excep-tional dietary plan suitable for the whole family.

Considering commercial pet foods in pellet or kib-ble form, it is quite clear why such diets cannot per-form. The main ingredients are refined carbs — brew-ers rice, wheat and corn gluten, potato meal, soyameal and animal meals. Actually, such refined carbsare rated as “extremely acidic” and their contributionoverrides any alkaline ingredients coming from thisdiet.

The same arguments follow for diets containingcopious amounts of meat (raw or cooked). In the lastfew years, there has been a trend to feed our com-panion animals a high raw-meat diet.

Meat too is classified as an “extremely” acidic.Acidosis leads to inflamed cells; reduced immuni-

ty and an array of health ailments like skin disorders, arthritis and kidney stones.

The recent landmark veterinary studies fromWest Hollywood, California, support what humannutritionists have been advising for decades — “stayclear of heavily processed foods and eat wholesome, balanced meals prepared fresh from the highest-quality ingredients available; are lightly cooked andhave no preservatives”.

According to theASA the consum-er was adamant that the phone’sports had been properly shut beforeit was used in water and that shewould not have risked deliberatelydamaging the device. She also men-tionedseveral similarcomplaintsshehad seen on an online forum.

Sony Mobile responded, sayingthat thephonewasa “waterproof de-vice” specified by an internationalstandardand that itwas “not suscep-tible to water ingress up to a depth of1,5 metresforupto30minutes”,pro-vided ports were all securely closed.

“Thecellularserviceprovider’sas-sertions that the device is onlywater-resistant are therefore incorrect …this seems like a product warranty/service/repair query rather than anadvertisingmatter.Thereseemstobeadisputebetweentheservicedepart-ment and the customer about the

source of the water damage,” Sonysaid.

However, theASA found in the ad-vertisedcapabilities of thedevice, ca-veats to the claim that the phonewas“smart, sleek and waterproof”, were“more alignedwithwhat is common-ly understood to be water resistant”.

TheASAsaidtheconsumer’sargu-ment appeared to “holdwater” and itwas “loath” to accept the claim of be-ing “waterproof”. It ruled that theword “waterproof” be withdrawnfrom all advertising of the phone andthat it not be used again in amannerthatsuggestsanythingotherthanwa-ter-resistant capabilities.

Sony Mobile said last week that ithad amended its adverts for thephone to water resistant and that ithad appealed the ruling, which was“made on the basis of a warrantyclaim”and that itwas“engagingwithASA in order to clarify the situation”.

“In the complainant’s specificcase, theirproductwasdefective, andhas since been replaced under SonyMobile’s standard warranty againstdefects. Unfortunately, in this case, aservice provider in the service chaindid not follow the correct procedurefor evaluating this device, which ledtoapoor customer experience,” SonyMobile said.

I found it sad that the consumerhad to escalate the case to the ASA inorder to obtain redress for a phonethatwasdefectivefromtheoutset, butthis case shows it certainly pays topersevere.

In another case, a consumer, NicoduPlessis, lodgedacomplaintagainst

a misleading Cartrack Car Recoverytelevision advert, which he allegedwas “confusing and untrue” as it vo-cally promised the company wouldgive consumers R150 000 in caseswhereavehiclewasnotrecoveredaf-ter theft. But then the payoff line ap-peared on the screen with the dis-claimer: “Your car back or up toR150 000 guaranteed. Ts and Cs ap-ply.”

Cartrack responded saying themessagerelatingtotheR150 000wasconveyed in a “clear, impactful andengaging manner” and 10% of thecommercial time was “purposelyusedtodeliverthismessageeffective-ly, ensuring that therewouldbeabso-lute clarity”.

However, the ASA disagreed say-ingit“takesissuewiththefactthatthevocal and thewrittenmessages in thecommercial are confusing”.

“Advertisements should not con-tainanystatementorvisualpresenta-tionwhich,directlyorby implication, omission, ambiguity, inaccuracy, ex-aggeratedclaimorotherwise,islikelyto mislead the consumer,” the ASAsaid.

TheASAfoundtheadvertambigu-ous and likely to mislead as it dis-playedcontradictingmessageswithadisclaimer that was not “sufficient orprominent enough to negate the ini-tial,unqualifiedpromiseofR150 000for any vehicle not recovered”. TheASAorderedthattheadvertbeimme-diatelywithdrawninitspresentform.

A Water Use LicenseApplications (WULA) in terms of the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) may alsobe required. All required documentation will be submitted to the Department of Water andSanitation if deemed necessary.

A section of a railway embankment located along the aManzimtoti River mouth estuary (near theAmanzimtoti Railway Station) was being undermined due to increased estuarine flow and waveaction. The heavy rainfall and subsequent increased water volumes (flooding) experienced at theriver mouth during December 2012 resulted in the complete failure of the embankment. Conse-quently the south-bound railway track collapsed, causing three locomotives to enter the river atthe foot of the embankment. The decision to commence with the emergency reconstruction of theembankment was based on the risk to the general public and estuarine environment associatedwith the potential collapse of the remaining railway line, especially with the current increased rainfall. The decision to commence with the emergency construction activities was based on the risk to thegeneral public and estuarine environment associated with the potential collapse of the remainingrailway line, especially with the current increased rainfall.
